The Black Horse Restaurant and Bar in North West Leicestershire

We prebooked a table for a Saturday night for a meal with friends On arrival we ordered drinks at the bar and were shown to our table in a room away from the bar. For starters we had, soup, prawn cocktail, nachos sharer (very generous), to follow we had we had sirloin steaks which were cooked to our requirements perfectly, along with the accompanying peppercorn sauce, chips, roast tomatoes, the meals were delicious and well proportioned. All staff encountered were friendly and attentive, the place has a lovely atmosphere and we will definitely be returning.

Had an absolutely fantastic meal for Sunday Lunch . We had friends who had travelled a long way to see us and they were so impressed with the food and attentive service .( member of staff in blue top ) 2 had Sunday roast , it’s epic proportions so don’t eat for a day beforehand! 4 of us had ribeye steak and each had it cooked to perfection. Great atmosphere in pub and our friends already making plans to return asap .

Have been here four or five times for lunch this year and it has been excellent on each occasion. My Springer Spaniel loves the chips here.

Is this the best kept secret in the UK??? What a place, service exceptional, all of the staff in particular (Matilda) the food was truly amazing, all cooked fresh and to perfection, the volume and value you will find hard to beat anywhere. without any doubt we will be returning, a wonderful evening.

Great to have a family friendly pub, serving traditional pub nosh back in the village! We were spoilt for choice and the portions were enormous! You'd never come away hungry. Only slight flaw was not having a high chair but I guess that's easily remedied. Certainly didn't stop the 2 year old from savouring every mouthful of sausage!

A group of friends had a get together lunch at this very traditional old pub, the dining rooms are small as you would expect. The menu was varied from pub classics to wraps and baguettes. The special lunch menu was 2 for £14. The main menu was varied at different prices. Desserts were on the black board at about £5-6. Service was good and personal by some of the younger staff, and the food was hot and freshly prepared. We were well looked after and can recommend the lunches.

This is one of the little hidden gems of the area. A very short drive off the M42 and you’re there. Superb staff, excellent food at good prices ( lunch time deal 2 for £14 ) in a really lovely , comfortable , clean and homely setting. We are definitely coming back. Thank you to all involved. Visited on a Wednesday evening. The menu is limited but the food and service were good. The portions are very generous.

Stumbled across this 17th century gem quite by chance whilst out for a drive. Initially only wanted a quick drink but ended up staying and buying dinner. The staff were lovely, really friendly and welcoming. The food was homemade,very tasty, piping hot and a good size. The icing on the cake was the atmosphere, I'm guessing most in there were locals, but from the moment we entered everyone was so friendly and happy. Well recommended Oh and it's dog friendly too 😃

Great food and good value. Fish and chips are excellent!! Unfortunately the service is terrible and waiting staff in scruffy joggers and hoodie. Plonking stuff on the table without a word, no service until we went to the bar to ask and also chasing to get drinks. No one asked if we wanted to order, wanted drinks and no one around to get the bill. Will go back for a drink as it’s a nice little pub but as far as the food goes the service is better in the chip shop!

Friendly staff and good quality food at a reasonable price

So pleased that the Black Horse has reopened under the same management as a couple of years ago.. It is a lovely friendly pub, we went last Saturday for a meal and had a great time. Four of us opted for fish and chips which had been a previous old favourite there and we were not disappointed. It was huge very tasty meal that we all really enjoyed. A large peice of fish served with chips, salad and mushy peas scrumptious! Staff were also very friendly and efficient. We will definitely be back.

First visit but not the last. Large car park with easy access to pub. Really warm welcome from staff and well looked after from the start. Booked in for meal in a small cosy restaurant, so advise booking prior to visit. Service very efficient, meal served very well, excellent presentation with very generous portions. Shrimp and salmon salad served on chilled plates, steak served on warmed plates, small details but it shows how this place works. Food very tasty and beautifully cooked. Overall, a really good evening, well worth a visit, we'll be going back again.

Came here for a Sunday lunch with family. The Roast was perfect, as was the Roast Yorkie Wrap. Puddings were delicious and all generous in size. Will certainly be back when we’re in the area again! Plus, Rosie is a great addition to the bar!

Went into The Black Horse on Saturday night for dinner and can say wow what a huge step up in quality of food since new ownership. The food is now gastro style. Absolutely delicious and lovely staff too. Would highly recommend!!

Absolutely stunning food! You won’t find a better Sunday roast in our opinion. All staff are lovely and really accommodating too. Can not recommend enough!

I attended the Ladies Night With a group of friends. Ladies night is on the last Thursday of each month. It's Pasta & Prosecco for £10.From the 4 mains, which were served with rocket, Parmesan & garlic bread, we chose, Chicken & Bacon Penne Carbonara, Salmon & Dill Tagliatelle and homemade Lasagne. A suitable alternative was made one of our group with dietary requirements, the vegetarian curry and rice was very tasty followed by a gluten free desert. Everyone enjoyed the pasta dishes. Some of us had lemon tart to follow, we all enjoyed our puddings. Starters and puddings are extra off the main menu.It was a very enjoyable evening, in a lovely cosy restaurant area just off the main bar. It is a welcoming old pub, the new staff were attentive, very helpful and accommodating. We hope to return next month. It's a good idea to book ahead. Thank you.

The beef stroganoff was delicious - substituted the rice for the chips (get the chips they are really worth it). The other meal was the mixed grill, the chef forgot to add something but the mistake was rectified and we were given an extra steak - it was a nice gesture. The chocolate ice cream in the fudge sundae was very tasty, but a bit too much cream on top. The food was nice but not wow. The service was a little slow, but we think that was due to a lack of staff and opening only recently.

Called in this Saturday and had another lovely lunch. Beef straganoff & Hunters chicken It’s a real gem of a pub. So glad we found it.

Discovered by chance after a trip to Twycross Zoo, this little village pub is a fantastic find. Reasonably priced beer, that was clearly well looked after and table service for food.

Popped in for a Friday lunch. Small but ample lunch menu. I had scampi and my colleague had fish. Well presented and the old fashioned chips were to die for. The service was excellent, nothing was too much trouble. We were just passing through and found it by accident but what a find. I believe it’s just changed management. I recommend this nice country pub with excellent food and service. People of Appleby Magna you have a gem.....

Found by chance, calling in on our way home, we were warmly welcomed. Our food arrived quickly and was tasty, was clearly all freshly prepared and good quality. The lasagne was really good! Good pub food!

I have only visited at lunchtime and the lunch menu is sufficiently varied to keep me coming back. The staff are friendly and give you a warm cheerful welcome.

I booked for me and my wife to have a three course meal on a recommendation of friends, I was a bit hesitant at first as I have never been to the establishment before but what my wife and I experienced was so good, that my wife and I will be coming back very soon. The food was excellent, the staff were so friendly and warming and the place looked amazing, will be recommending to all of my friends.

Have visited several times, whilst the selection of food is always lovely my favourite has to be the Sunday Lunch. The selection of drinks always goes down well too! Lovely cosy atmosphere and helpful staff.

We visited for dinner on a Saturday evening. The section of the restaurant where we were given a table was right opposite the kitchen entrance, with no door(s) to shield the dining area either from the noise of staff coming and going or from loud chatter etc in the main bar area. Difficult to have much conversation ourselves in those circumstances.

We’ve been to the Black Horse several times now and we have tried a number of different dishes,l have to say we haven’t been disappointed with anything.All the food is freshly cooked and is well presented,the portions are big compared to some restaurants.

Nice meal, child friendly and good beer. Steak wasn’t particularly good but was replaced without any fuss and second time around was delicious. These things happen though so doesn’t detract from a 4/5 review. Friendly staff as well and good service

We called in here without a reservation but the staff were very obliging and found us a free table. Two of us had the Salmon fillet with peas and Hollandaise sauce, one with chips and one with new potatoes. Home made chicken goujons with chips and peas was from the children's menu. We were served by friendly staff. This is a lovely historic village pub and certainly worth seeking out for decent home cooked bar meals.

A very tasty meal with generous portions in a freshly redecorated village pub. Coming a little late at lunchtime meant that the full menu was no longer available, which was a shame.

I took my family for Sunday lunch at The Black Horse after hearing some really positive reviews and it really did live up to my high expectations. The drink selection is excellent with a wide range of Gin options which was a big hit with the ladies of the group and theres also some fantastic draft beers on offer to which catered for the men. Onto the food, we all had the traditional Sunday roast with most opting for a mixture of chicken and beef, perfect size portions and all accompanied with beautiful fresh Vegetables which you serve yourself 10/10. Cant recommend this place highly enough, a big thank-you to all the staff who were extremely helpful and friendly, we will definitely be back.

Went for Sunday lunch at the black horse. Service excellent,locals friendly. Food piping hot and plenty of it with a wide variety of vegetables, so much in fact we had a doggy bag made up of the leftovers . All homemade and the puddings were delicious. Would definitely recommend

Three of us had dinner on Tuesday 28th Nov. All choose different dish, and all very pleased with our choices. Well presented, hot, good portions with out over facing. All food cooked to order. The staff could not have been friendlier or more helpful. Will be back very soon.

We went as a party of 14 - pre-booked and pre-ordered started and mains from the menu. Firstly they could not provide 6 lamb shanks - only 4. But with the sort of notice we gave them, they should have been able to prepare more. We were placed in the back room, which was barely large enough - not the front room which had been indicated when we'd visited before - it was already part-occupied on the night. Then the service was terrible - not the waitresses' fault, but they clearly had a problem getting the food out of the kitchen. Several of us had finished our mains before same were served (one of the said lamb shanks arriving a good 35 mins after the others?). When we went for the bill, they said 'sorry about the service, we had a member of staff walk out on us yesterday'. We assume it was the cook/chef, because the food quality was barely average (choice of veg - 'peas or mushy peas'). Our USA guests who were part of the party were really not impressed, neither were we. To be fair, they did knock 10% off the bill, but it would have been better, if they'd have known they could not cope, to let us know in advance so we could have decided whether to stick with them or do something else. I'm sure the other better reviews here are when they are not under such stress, but sorry, we can't do better than 2 stars. The beer was very good though. Hope they recover quickly.

Have been for Sunday lunch (roast dinner), great meal, super selection of meats and fresh veg-delicious cauliflower cheese! Have also been on a Saturday lunchtime. The light bite menu was very varied with lots to choose from. I had the chilli con carne which was delicious. Staff were lovely and the service was very quick. A lovely village pub- well worth a visit!

This is our 2nd review. We’ve been to The Black Horse numerous times since opening night. We’ve enjoyed Sunday lunches and mid week meals. The food and service is consistently good. The kids meals are perfect. Thanks to Julie and the team. An extra thanks & well done to Charlotte who always provides wonderful service with a smile. We’re moving into the Village next month, it’s such a bonus to have The Black Horse on our doorstep. See you soon,

Called in for lunch on a Saturday. The batter on my wife's fish was beautifully thin and the fish itself was excellent. I had faggots which were home made and very tasty. Definitely worth a detour off the motorway.

I'm so pleased that the Black Horse in Appleby Magna is open again. It's a lovely, friendly pub and a nice place to go for a meal. Myself and my husband booked a table for a Saturday evening, (it's a small restaurant so best to book perhaps), the bar and waiting staff are friendly and attentive, we both had cod and chips, the fish was very fresh and cooked to perfection with a crisp, light batter, the triple cooked chips are amazing, portions just right.I was informed by another diner they had meals of home made faggots and chilli and said they were delicious also. The puddings looked wonderful but we did not have room, maybe next time.We will definitely be back. Thank you.

Visited this pub when we found that the cook from Queens at Kings Newton had taken over the pub. We were all more than pleased with our meals . Fish and chips are superb as they always were at the Queens. All the staff were very friendly and obliging , the food was first class. Wish them all the best and hope they continue to make a go of it. They deserve all the business they get.

The pub is under new management since the end of August so there are still changes taking place. The fixed price lunch menu is fairly small but after 2 visits we have not been disappointed with our choices. The food is well cooked and the service good. The price is very reasonable. The bar and restaurant are quite small but it hasn't been crowded.Our old favourite pub closed suddenly and many of the staff, including the chef/owner have moved to Appleby. We felt among friends.

After going to a Pub which i do not want to name, i recently found out that the previous chief has moved to this establishment. The food was so worth the money and the staff that works there are exceptional
