Smashing service but some of the food was overcooked and others were cold

Wonderful staff and a great atmosphere. £30-£40 per person included plenty of drinks, a delicious meal and pudding.

Proper pub. Heart of the community. Support it.

If they're going to add a service charge to a meal it should say so on the website and menu. I don't recall a pub charging a service charge before (and I go to lots of pubs) surely better to increase prices a little than to annoy customers like this. I don't recall a service charge when I visited the Bulls Head last year (a couple of times) but maybe I paid without looking. I quite often leave tips in pubs but that's an acknowledgement of unusually good food or service not because the grasping owner decides to stick a service charge on without asking and without having delivered above expectations. That said I had no gripes about food/beer/atmosphere/service this time (but it can get very busy in summer).

Quick lunch in passing, (rugby special)=chicken strips and chips in a basket, sat in snug/tap room

Cannot rate food as we didn't eat but it looked abd smelt amazing. Lovely friendly atmosphere and the lady behind the bar was lovely she also made a fuss of our dog. Definitely will return

Great service, great food and a nice place.

The Sunday lunch went down well. Good beer. It was a cold day and we were sat near the door, so it was very draughty but the barman made an effort to try and keep it closed which was appreciated.

Had an excellent roast here, the potatoes were really something special and probably some of the best we've ever had! Great old pub with good atmosphere. Not sure if the 10% service charge should be applicable as most is ordered at the bar, but am hoping it goes straight to the friendly staff :)

Had a Sunday roast , and after seeing 4/5 star reviews were unfortunately very disappointed. Tasteless roast with watery gravy and hard and large “un roasted” potatoes. I’m sure their normal menu might be better

Lovely traditional village pub, warm welcome, from very helpful and friendly staff, really good traditional food. Would have given 5 stars, accept for, and really only a minor gripe, but an unexpected 10 percent service charge appeared on the bill. I would probably have given a larger tip voluntarily, just tarnished the occasion slightly.

Nice cosy pub with good food.but 10% service charge in a pub ? Fish & chips were good, game pie was nice, Brie in bread was good ( could be improved if the bread had been pre sliced 60% down to make eating easier) Roastbeef also looked good. Unfortunately I didn't realise/ read / see this 10% service charge automatically added and therefore I left a 10% tip. Leaving nearly £60 tip for pub food and service. Only live a few minutes away but it was our first visit, very Christmassy outside, very nice vibe lovely and busy. Our service was excellent and our meals delicious. We left a scarf by mistake and they rang me the next day to say they’d found it.

We have lived just down the road from this beautiful little pub for the last few years and had never been until tonight. It was lovely, very festive, the staff were very welcoming, the decor is so homely and familiar and the atmosphere was perfect, buzzing but overcrowded. The food is lovely, everything was spot on and seemed very fresh and homemade. We feel sad that we hadn’t visited until now but so glad and lucky that we have found this lovely little pub right on our doorstep. Thanks so much.

The Bulls Head is a lovely country pub with an open fire. The staff are friendly and welcoming, a service with a smile. The Sunday roast has to be one of the best I've had in a long time. I will definitely be returning for another Sunday lunch!

This is our second time to returning to Ashford in the last two years and we made sure to come back to the Bull after how fantastic we found it the first time. It seems to be getting better each time we come, the service and greeting as soon as you walk through the door is welcoming, the options on the menu are traditional with a modern twist- we thought this menu was even better than when we last visited. Thank you to all of your team, you deserve all the accolades you get!

We visited this Sunday just gone after a visit to chatsworth house upon seeing all the amazing reviews and a member of our party visiting before. The experience from start to finish was very disappointing we were put on a small table that would normally just fit 4 people the 5 of us we squashed to the point we had to stack our drinks, cutlery and the condiments on the edge of bar where we were sat just to fit our plates on when the food arrived. The food arrived very quickly which was great however the food may be the worse roast we have had in a very long time if not ever. The flavour of everything was very tasteless to the point it tasted of nothing included the mountains of gravy that was on the plate. At no point did a member of staff ask how the food was not whilst we were eating and not when the plates were cleared which would have been very obvious as 2 of us had no more than a couple of mouthfuls and the other 3 left half there meal too.

Friendly staff, cosy snug bar with open fire. Lovely atmosphere. The pub is right in the middle of the village and ideal for us.

We called in on a cold Thursday night after our Chatsworth visit. It was busy and welcoming with great food. Service was prompt and friendly. I liked the limited menu, with enough choice for everyone. Excellent range of real ales which helped to pass a great couple of hours before heading home. If you’re down this way- give it a try.

I only write reviews if something is exceptional or really poor. Well guess what! My wife and I were really looking forward to a great meal at The Bull's Head, after all the rave reviews on Tripadvisor. It never ceases to amaze me what some people are happy with, it just makes me wonder what they eat at home! After a 35 minute drive from Chesterfield we were initially shown a table in the bar close to the bar itself, I asked if there was a quiet table and was told yes as long as were out by 7.30, we were moved to 'the snug' which had 4 or 5 tables and was cold. There was another couple in there so the landlord lit the log fire, which fizzled out soon after. My wife had chicken gyros and I had fish and chips. After a 45 minute wait the food arrived, which is fine if it's freshly cooked and worth the wait. My wife said her meal was ok but went cold quickly and my cod and chips was very poor, hardly any fish in what was nearly all batter and what there was, was grey and unappealing. More like 'minnow and chips'. Another guy came in and also had fish and chips, he kept repeating big plate of food that was. I thought quantity over quality mate. When the landlady asked if everything was alright, I said my wife's was ok but mine was very disappointing, to which she replied 'Sorry to hear that I'll pass it on to the chef'. There was no gesture of goodwill like not charging for our soft drinks or knocking a bit off the bill, just a meaningless comment. I suppose with all the bookings they were getting, the phone kept ringing for table bookings, they were not going to be bothered about one dissatisfied couple! Let's take their money and move them out, that was probably why the landlord kept checking the book and the time. Why am I wring this review at 4.30am, because I've been awake all night feeling sick and having chronic indigestion!

After a beautiful walk along the River Wye, we enjoyed a wonderful dinner at The Bulls Head. Delicious food, very generous portions and friendly staff and locals, we were made to feel very welcome thank you, great way to celebrate my birthday. Thank you Peter for giving us a tour of the local area.

Called in the off chance for a drink and ended up eating a light lunch. Pleasant staff, assortment of sandwiches plus usual pub lunch food and great beers at reasonable prices. Not the largest of pubs, but it is in a small village and very cosy inside.

We stayed in the village for a few nights and ate in the bulls head on two evenings. The manager and his team couldn't do enough to help, always very polite making time to chat. The ambience in the pub was wonderful with both locals and temporary visitors, like me, chatting as though we'd been there for ages. Dogs were warmly welcomed. Food was very tasty and good portions, plenty of choice although I'd like to have seen a steak on the menu. All in all great pub! Thanks and I hope to return soon. Best regards. Steve.

1 hour before closing, i was visiting bakewell and called to see if they still serve food. A Very friendly voice said they would, as we were only 10 min away and ordered as soon as we got there. Young man at the bar thanked us for calling, made friendly conversation, food was ready fast and MY GOD ! was delicious, u get a lot for what u pay. The atmosphere was so vintage, beautiful, small little gem . Definitely will go again 🙏🏼💜

Great garden with children's play area - far enough away for a peaceful break but still able to keep an eye on them! Good food reasonably priced. Lovely little village and an open topped bus to travel home! Great day out.

A fantastic friendly reception by all staff, especially Bar Manager Casper, who was constantly rushing around, but still found time for a chat at the bar. Food was fantastic too ! Will definitely go back if we are in the area .

Called in on the off-chance to see if we could squeeze in a meal before the last bus back to our campsite. They were very accommodating and we had a lovely chorizo/prawn starter and very good pie, served expediently, so we had a bit of time to enjoy an extra after dinner drink before the bus. Great place!

We stayed locally in Ashford In The Water, came to this lovely pub for dinner one evening - walking distance from our cottage. The bartender was great so friendly, food was delicious. Had a steak pie, it was fresh and portions were huge. Pub is reasonably small inside so definitely call and book a table. Would definitely come back!

Lovely lil place, quite expensive but worthwhile ..

We found this pub online as we were in Bakewell and going to visit Thornbridge Hall nearby. We walked to the famous bridge and the church before lunch, which was really delicious. We were served really quickly, although we did book to ensure a table. Staff were very pleasant and helpful. We have just recommended the food to friends who are staying in the area. Highly recommend.

Bit posh for me but lovely. Sunday lunch was good, underseasoned which I like, you can manage it yourself then. Service was excellent, well done young people serving

Fantastic meal. Gyros were excellent, both the chicken & the lamb. So too the bangers and mash and the fish and chips. Robinson's Stout is also an excellent Guinness alternative. Service was impeccable.

The Bulls Head is a gastro pub with a lot of potential. It could do with a revamp as it looks a bit tired and uninviting. Well supported by the locals as it is the only place in the village to eat. Food is mediocre and the helpings were too large which we found off putting. Menu should have a better selection to choose from and at that well presented. Staff are extremely friendly and do their best but could do with some hospitality training. Patrons drinking at the bar were extremely loud which was off putting and made it difficult for us to enjoy our meal. Perhaps it should serve food at one side of the bar and drink at the other in order for everyone to enjoy their food and drink.

Decent food at a cozy pub. Lovely garden. I had the beetroot and cheese and found that the cheese was not that poor plastic cheese so many serves in a burger in UK. That was certainly a plus in my book. The young waiter performed a service that ensured this lands on a fiver. The general atmosphere and friendliness felt among the staff was really something.

This delightful whitewashed former coaching inn is located on the main street. Popped in here on a Sunday afternoon while on a day excursion. It seemed to be the only place open and it was packed, but the bar staff though very busy were really welcoming and friendly. The bar lounge is cosy and full of olde-worlde charm, with oak beams and nostalgic old photos on the walls. Good choice of beers and ales. Only had time for a drink, so I can't comment on the meals other than that the food I saw other people eating both looked and smelled good! Enjoyed a cold refreshing lager and lime in the beer garden at the back of the pub. It's a pleasant space with a beer tent, shady parasols, a nice view and a casual friendly vibe. Quite a few people were here with dogs, so canine friends are obviously welcome! Only a brief visit but a very pleasant one. Would be happy to return to try one of their traditional pub meals!

Good place for a refresher after a hike

Big portions and delicious food. We had the beef and unicorn pie which was so tender and tasty and the Greek gyros which was a lamb kofta on a flat bread with fries and a little bit of salad, also really tasty. Sticky ginger pudding was a huge portion and a little dry

A great local country pub. Good keg beers. Great food. Service is very good. Tables can be booked inside or turn up and eat in the large beer garden. Very dog friendly.

Lovely staff, and lovely pub. Unfortunately the food was only average. The beef, which was supposed to be locally reared, had the appearance and taste of reheated machine sliced sandwich beef. Nothing like a previous review pictured. Would definitely visit again, but only for the beer.
