We waited one hour for the food to arrive even though there was nobody else was there. It was 3 degrees outside and the heating was off so I ate my lunch with my coat on. The food was nice when it arrived.

What a disappointing experience that this...after ordering in a restaurant with no one else there we had to wait nearly 1 hour for our meals. To be presented with 2 stone cold steaks a few chips and my one daughters risotto was also Stone cold.. Our meals were returned and we were then presented with the same steaks which were now overcooked. And my daughter didn't touch her risotto.. I have never fed my kids pre packed sandwiches after going out for a meal before. The only plus was we didn't have to pay for our steaks...

A lovely pub but food wasn’t great. Chips undercooked, cheesy garlic bread was like cheese on toast and chicken wings had sauce poured on rather than cooked in it. Service was very lacking. Whilst the staff were pleasant, they weren’t attentive enough. They were gathered at the bar as it was quiet and we were always having to call them to get drinks or something else we needed. We were looking forward to visiting but I don’t think we’ll be returning.

Lovely atmosphere, gorgeous food and amazing staff! I’ve visited three times since lockdown has been lifted and each time has not failed to impress. Had some super tasty fish cakes the first time, in their lovely outside area in the sunshine, Sunday dinner the second time which genuinely was the best dinner I’ve ever had, they went above and beyond for me even knocking me up some cauliflower cheese just for me despite it being busy and third time last night I took advantage of the eat out help out offer and we had halloumi, stuffed peppers and sticky sausages to start (again a special request, awkward customer as always), steak for mains which was cooked to perfection and Eaton mess for dessert which made me feel like I’d died and gone to heaven. Really can’t rate the place enough, the staff are a small team and it shines through how well they all get along with great communication, friendly personalities, welcoming smiles and the willingness to help as much as possible. Already booked my table for next week.

I have been to The Bull several times and have never been disappointed. I find it odd to see a couple of poor reviews and would recommend you ignore them and try this place yourself! The staff are always friendly, cheerful and welcoming. With the government scheme throughout August it was quite busy when we last dined here but social distancing was adhered to and despite going at such a busy time the food was outstanding as always. This is my favourite place to eat out. I have celebrated Family nights out, birthdays, a variety of special occasions and a few romantic evenings with the hubby. Can’t wait for Tapas night!

We had the lunchtime bar snacks and they were delicious. The staff here are very friendly and nothing is too much trouble for them. We felt very safe here in these uncertain times and they have a one way system in place. The food is excellent, everything is hot and freshly cooked. Cannot recommend The Bull highly enough. We visited last Friday night and me and my friend ordered chicken wings to start then a burger and a gammon, the chicken wings came piping hot strait out the fryer but they were very bland and the sauce served with it was very oily, my burger was very greasy but the worst were the hand cut chips they were so under cooked!! Almost like they had been blanched but not re cooked! My friends were the same and his Gammon was in edable! It was so so salt.. my friend suffers from autism and extreme anxiety so didn’t want me to complain and make a scene. The waitress was so lovely though and almost seemed embarrassed by the food she was serving. Stay well clear. What a shame as the food was always amazing....

Where do I start ? Moved into the area 15 months ago, we are on a mission trying local fayre. Our first visit to the Bull and unfortunately will be our last !Luckily the government was paying half the bill and maybe thats why we got half portions ?The Prawn cocktail was a little array of the tiniest shrimps, these were not prawns by any means, the rose marie sauce was like water. We decided on curry for the main again a very poor imitation of one, watery consistency, I counted 5 small pieces of overcooked chicken in what was supposed to be Masala ? Buttery creamy sauce, it was like water, with the basmati also sitting in a pool of water, yak, the popaddum you could bend double it was so stale, there was so much that wasnt right!! Inattentive staff laughing and joking or flirting in the back, 3 times my partner had to look to gain attention from them. Thankfully we only spent £17.20 thanx to the government!I will avoid this place at all costs, and direct patrons friends to The Egerton at broxton, actually a cheaper and far better quality establishment, sorry Bully no prizes from me !

We were a party of 6 who only booked earlier that evening. We had the option of choosing from the Christmas menu which was a pleasant surprise and unusual without having to pre order. It seemed reasonably prices at £12.95, £16.95 and £19.95 for 1,2 and 3 course respectively. We all opted for the festive menu. Our staters arrived, the soup and prawn cocktail were good portions and went down well. The goats cheese however was very poor value. We pointed this out to the waiter who said the prawn cocktail was not usually that big a portion! We all went for turkey as a main. This was a very small portion of meat with roast potatoes, pigs in blankets but no parsnips. We asked for extra turkey straight away after the small starters that half of us had had. Extra was provided immediately. Only two bowls of veg between 6 was brought, again we asked for extra which was provided. Only the gravy on the original portion of meat was given to us. They did provide a bit more when we asked. All in all the food was hot and good quality but, whilst we were provided with extra when we asked, it was a shame we had to do so. It would have been very poor value had we not. We all felt that it had put a but of a dampener on things. A couple of us also felt that we were made to feel as if we were greedy as the comments ‘no one else has complained about portion size’ and ‘most people don’t have such big appetite’ were made. We did point out that people don’t say because it spoils the atmosphere- which is what it did for us.

This village pub has been a local for years, but sadly after changing hands a couple of times has gradually gotten to be very poor. The pub itself is lovely, however there has been a steady decline in the number of people who both drink and eat here. Food quality is quite frankly shocking! You could get better in a wetherspoons! I had a meal with friends this evening and was served a horrific looking and equally awful tasting chicken burger shown below. The bread was soggy, the chicken was bone dry and they piled on some reformed plastic cheese all over it. The chips were dry and the overall meal was inedible. It is such a shame that the quality of this lovely local has gone done so much. I think it will be a while before returning!

I found this pub on trip advisor having typed in gluten & dairy free restaurants near Malpas. The menu looked promising, some good gf df choices but I still rang to check beforehand they could cater gf df & was assured they could before booking. We arrived Saturday for 18.00 and waited nearly 40 minutes for a waitress to take our order only to be told they had run out of the only gf df starter. I asked if any others could be adapted which involved another wait whilst she consulted the chef. A starter was altered (by leaving off the bread!), brought & was nice as was my main, steak, the only gf df main! We had to ask 3 times for a wine list and a coffee ordered never arrived. Disappointing.

The service was good and the lady who served our table was polite and very friendly and made sure that we were all happy with our choice of seating and meals. The meals were good although the burger was a bit messy (nice but keep a supply of paper napkins with you) but you know what you are getting when you order one of these. As i was driving i chose non-alcoholic Bitburger which was served nice and cold. Toilet area is cramped but sufficient. Plenty of parking space in the car park for any sized car. A nice location too. As it was my birthday and the sun was shining we thought we would give The Bull a try, we were not disappointed, we both had an Aberdeen Angus burger, coleslaw and beef dripping chips, oh my this dish was absolutely gorgeous, a portion of gigantic onion rings only helped the waistline bulge s little bit more. The barmaid was a lovely girl, gave us a great bit of advice by only ordering 1 portion of onion rings not 2 and thankfully we did take this on board. It was a wonderful lunch out in the basking sunshine and to top it off, the Red Arrows flew past in perfect formation, what lengths my hubbie will go to for my Birthday lol .

We arrived for a meal on Sunday teatime having pre booked a table earlier in the day. As we were only in for a light bite we ordered a salad, beef baguette and chips and tomato pasta for my 4 year old daughter. The table was booked for 5.30pm. We didn't get our food till 6.15pm which by this point my daughter was complaining she was hungry. The kids pasta was soft and congealed together as though it had been shoved in the microwave with little effort. I tasted it and for £7 I wouldn't even feed that rubbish to my daughter. My husbands beef baguette was tough as an old boot and the chips were hard and undercooked. He sent them back and they came back 2 minutes later soggy and still as bad. My salad was passable but by the time I had eaten it my French fries had only just arrived. Whilst the 2 meals were taken off the bill this this is not the first time we have had poor quality meals there which do not warrant the price. I could cook better food myself and suggest that the establishment gets a new chef as being locals we certainly will not be returning. We left feeling hungry and extremely disappointed.

Firstly, the staff here are very friendly and genuine and we would return, we are on holiday so won't in the foreseeable future. We popped in one night for a drink, saw the menu and decided to return. We were warned there would be a wait for the meal as a number of tables had just ordered, not being in a hurry we felt this was acceptable. The food took nearly an hour, but was clearly fresh and delicious. The salad was supposed to be accompanied by chilli peanuts but these ended up being cashew nuts - a real bonus - sadly both the advertised mango and avocado were not in evidence! I have worked in catering and could see the staff were genuinely uncomfortable about our wait, so we didn't complain. Do go, if in area, don't go if you are in a hurry.

Thought we’d give this place a go. Nice cozy interior. Love the floor tiles. Ordered the Goats cheese Bon bons to start which were really nice. Main for me was steak and mushroom pie with chips and mushy peas. The pie tasted nice but there...

A welcome return to this lovely pub restaurant, this time for an evening meal with friends. The food was excellent and very good value for money. The service was again friendly and the waiting on staff were able to talk us through the dishes we enquired about. We were informed immediately upon arrival that owing to a large family party that were already seated there may be a short wait for our food once ordered. Having been informed we were quite relaxed and as it turned out the wait was not that long anyway.

My friends and I decided to go for dinner here mid week as we'd heard great reviews about the Bull. We were seated promptly but it took three requests before someone came to take our food order. It wasn't that busy but I think the waiting on staff were trying to stagger the orders. The wait for food was then painful. We waited over an hour for our mains to arrive. The food was absolutely lovely when it arrived and we all enjoyed our meals. Well presented and tasty. Not the best start, but all ended well once the hangerness disappeared. I think they may have been short staffed in the kitchen that day so will give this place the benefit of the doubt and definitely try again. The staff were all very friendly despite being under pressure. Be warned though if you are feeling exceptionally hungry!

We booked this meal at short notice. We were 4 adults, two children and a dog. The order was taken in good time and took a reasonable amount of time to come. The food was good and the prices were not expensive. Service was prompt too.

After making arrangements from 12,000 miles away in Australia we were delighted to arrive to find all our wishes catered for by Ashley & his super friendly staff. We chose The Bull for it's proximity to Malpas where we married 40 years ago.Ashley was more than helpful in assisting us to add our own personal touches to the the table arrangements. The three course dinner & service was terrific. All our guests commented on how much they had enjoyed such a great evening. We would like to apologise to other diners on that evening if our voices reflected the fun we were having. We would totally recommend The Bull for anyone having a special celebration or quiet dinner. Many thanks again for a memorable evening. Hopefully we shall return again one day.Helen & Brian V. We'd booked an hour or so in advance as we were told their kitchen was small but we managed to get in no problem. The bar was busy when we arrived and you could tell they had a party in the restaurant too. It was noisy but we assumed this would dissipate when we were seated...it didn't, as the tables as positioned in relatively close proximity to the bar. That said, the service was pleasant and efficient. We ordered drinks and mains and were all happy with our choices - a variety and vegetarian, steak, burger and a sausage, black pudding and apple pie which was very nice indeed. We didn't hang around for dessert as the party that were in had just placed their order so paid at the bar and left. We would definitely return as noise may have just been louder on the night in question and overall a good experience.

We were out on one of our epic walks & called into the pub for a drink & a snack. The pub is beautiful inside, with lots of wooden beams & seats made out of kegs; we were very impressed with the traditional floor tiles which reflected the age of the pub. There was a large party of mourners arriving as we did so when buying our drink we asked the barman if they were serving food to anybody else not with that party. The barman checked & told us that we could order but that the food may take a little longer because the kitchen was busy catering for the wake.We both decided that we would try the soup of the day & were waiting for a gap at the bar to order, however, a young, cheerful waitress came over to ask to take our order. We also ordered halloumi chips with dip & asked if it could come with the soup.We were expecting a bit of a wait but the food arrived within 10 mins & was piping hot, the soup was parmesan & cauliflower & was beautifully smooth & delicious, there was a depth of flavour to it which had taken care & time to achieve. The halloumi chips were yummy too-if they take that much care over the basics then we will definitely return to have a full meal!We were impressed by the young waitress who was busy attending to the mourners but she ensured that we received good service too-she is definitely a credit to this pub!

Visited on a Saturday lunch time as part of a cycle day out with my young son! I must say the staff were exceptionally friendly, especially the young girl and barman! The food took its time, BUT when it arrived it was clearly made fresh and was absolutely delicious! My son had Fish finger sandwich, I had BLT and soup (+£2). We ordered a bowl of fries on the side (they were perfectly cooked and there were loads). All in all for just over £23 with drinks I was very happy!Lovely place and worth a visit! Thanks.

A group of 13 were celebrating several significant birthdays, there was not problem with booking for a large number. We found the staff friendly and helpful in dealing with out different requests. The food was good served hot and in good time. And we thought the dishes were reasonable priced. My choice of prawn salad was excellent and the chocolate tort was sublime. All in all a a wonderful evening. Thank you.

Never have I witnessed a manager so rudeFrom the moment we walked in I did wonder. No greeting , no smiles, I fealt we were more of a menace We arrived with friends .. afternoon tea.Quite early on a few of us said we didn't want afternoon tea as I don't like cake... and wasnt going to have tea/coffeeClearly stated this and ordered off the menu. Not once to be told we would still have to pay... If I'd known this I would have eaten the sandwich and gone with the flow. Sandwichs came out late.. 2 cold coffee pots which were changed.. but should never have come out... So went to pay my bill to have my cider.. my £10 sandwich and chips... and afternoon tea also on it.. when we queried this a the manager he got angry and called us cheapskates trying to get out of paying.. and he didn't need people like us.. and never to come back..I am no such thing... znd actually won't be coming backAnd oh my god I have never in my life been treated this way...Good job others witnessed this as people would say it was exaggerated. .I have been in retail 21years.. my own business... and opening another...You just don't speak to people like that....He could have handled things so much better..That evening we had another family doo at the horse and jockey at Grindley Brook. Now there's a place that does things right.. any problems.. sorted.. any discrepancies are sorted We will always go there from now on.. Looking back at the Bull... empty on a Saturday afternoon should have sent alarm bells...Also looking at other poor ratings there seems to be a common factor...RUDE MANAGER and his sarcastic responses just say it all...

I was absolutely shocked how we were spoken to yesterday, referred to as "cheapskates". We had gone with friends for afternoon tea which was £11 per head for coffee/tea, sandwiches, cake etc I asked could I have my own food as I'm not a cake person and it was so much food and I was out for diner that evening . I asked numerous times the manager/ owner was even at the bar when I asked and took my visa card off me - I asked had we been catered for- anyway came to pay and they tried to charge us for our food and afternoon tea, he heard my queries so did the staff but still said nothing - I would have had the afternoon tea if I was told I was catered for, anyway we were verbally abused so we left, such a shame it use to be a lovely pub - I see why there was no one else in there - he is such a rude man!!

Well I'm in complete shock! I can honestly say I have never been spoken to in such a rude, condescending manner as I have experienced this afternoon at the Bull in Shocklatch. What was supposed to be an afternoon of celebration was marred by the inexcusable actions of an incompetent and arrogant manager. Having experienced slow and sullen service, which included stale cakes and cold coffee, throughout the afternoon I was then greeted by a bill for not only my food but for an afternoon tea which I didn't participate in. I, of course, queried this, pointing out that it had not been made clear to me that I was to be billed for this regardless of whether I ate it or not, had this point been made clear I wouldn't have ordered from the menu I would have just had some sandwiches. I was then called a cheapskate and told I was just trying to get out of paying my bill. I responded that, having worked in the trade for more then a decade I couldn't believe his attitude and I myself had not and would never speak to a customer in that manner. He responded that he didn't need customers like me anyway to which I said he clearly did as his pub was empty. Unsurprisingly I will not be going again, and urge others not to give such an ungrateful owner your custom as there are many other local pubs which will gratefully appreciate you. Along with other insults not just to myself but also to others of the party which I find simply unforgivable and highly unprofessional, the whole experience was not welcoming from the start, uninspiring and unskilled staff and a generally sully attitude making us feel like a nuisance. Not a positive experience

We chose The Bull to host my nan and grandads 50th wedding anniversary and what a great decision that was. The morning of the party Ashley allowed us to come in and decorate the 'long room' exactly how we wanted with flowers and bunting etc which helped make the day even more fabulous. The majority of guests were elderly however, nothing was too much trouble for the extremely friendly and attentive staff. We had arranged for a buffet of curry, lasagne and cottage pie with chips, salad and garlic bread to go with it and everyone commented on how delicious it was! To follow came Apple pie and custard along with baileys cheesecake and cream and this did not disappoint! The overall afternoon was great and was made even better by the amazing service and food! I would highly recommend using The Bull for any type of special event! A massive thank you to Ashley and his team for making sure my nan and grandad had the day they deserved!

Attended Saturday night quiz. Arrived at 7:00pm. Started with a glass of red wine and Mediterranean platter followed by a to die for cheesecake( all food freshly cooked by Jason ( chef ) and the team. Wolfed the cheese cake down and realised I hadn't took a picture. Had a few more vino's during the quiz along with some banter with Jason and the regular customers. All tables were booked and nice to see a full house. Made a change to the average Saturday night and will certainly do it again. Would recommend to call in prior for some brekky or lunch to book quiz any day before or on Saturday. Quiz moved on quicker than your normal pub quiz which was great with the light banter and no typical interruptions from pub scene. Didn't win the quiz but enjoyed trying.

Stumbled on this wonderful cafe as we were on our way home from a camping trip. The staff are incredibly friendly and were so welcoming and kind to my 5yo daughter. The food was amazing, we both had the breakfast and my daughter had a lunch box which she loved and I thought it was great value, when we went inside to pay we couldn't not buy one (or two) of the amazing cakes. So delicious. Thank you :)

Our favourite place to come for brunch after football. The team, as always, went above and beyond with the orders for our family (all with different dietary requirements). The boys had the classic big breakfast with local products at a great price. I tried the weekend special eggs Benedict and it was amazing. The boys filled their boots. The girls enjoyed new things. The doorstop toast alone is worth the visit. Sadly, no room for my favourite one the menu - parsnip cake, but the cake-away option meant I could enjoy it later. We brought a friend for their first visit and she was blown away.

Not religious at all but like other reviewers found this true OASIS when looking for refreshment in Chester Just great, lovely staff and clientele and great quality and value coffee and cakes... Interesting selection of books, gifts, cards etc Would use regularly if we lived locally Staff say they may have to relocate soon due to "commercial development of the site" Surely the Church which is not short of funds can provide an alternative venue for this wonderful place which probably does more for spreading the religious message than many more traditional churches etc...something in the Cathedral Precinct maybe?? Good luck to you all and God bless ( if it helps)
