The Bull Inn in Forest Heath

I think there should be a choice between 'average' and 'very good'. For us, the menu had something for all of us and the staff were most attentive, and it is a great place for a family get-together for us being half way between us all. However, some aspects of the menu let it all down. The 'chunky chips' were really quite soggy and the Caesar salad was most disappointing - too much dressing, hardly any chicken and overpriced. The pie and the veg burgers were said to be delicious so all in all a mixed review.

Our recent stay at this inn was a mixed experience. On the downside, the property itself left much to be desired. There was a noticeable odor in the halls, and the carpet looked hastily installed, as if it was simply thrown down and stapled to the walls. Some of the rooms even had signs of mold, and the stairs felt narrow and unstable. To make matters worse, we weren't informed of the inn's hours of operation, and in the early morning, there was no staff available to assist. The lack of phones in the rooms made it difficult to contact anyone, whether to call another room or reach the front desk. That said, there were some positives. The restaurant and bar are clearly popular, packed each night, and for good reason – the food is delicious, prepared by different chefs, each adding their own touch. One morning, the tall chef was especially kind, going out of his way to make sure we had what we needed before heading out. While the staff was small, they were friendly, helpful, and patient throughout our stay. Overall, while the inn itself could use some significant improvements, the dining experience and the staff's hospitality do make up for some of the shortcomings.

My recommendation would be to give it a miss. We chose The Bull Inn (for a very special occasion) because the menu looked good. We arrived in good time and were shown to our table. 20minutes later, we decided to go to the bar to fetch our own drinks as no one bothered to come to our table. When we were eventually able to order our food, we chose to share the sourdough starter. It was delicious. We then ordered fillet steak and after 10 mins we’re were approached to be told there was no fillet steak. We plumped for sirloin. After another wait the steaks arrived and not one of them was cooked as we ordered - one had to go back to be medium from blue. 2 other steaks were virtually inedible. We decided to forgo pudding. Along came the bill and I was charged for fillet steak. My advice to the Bull: if you want to be a ‘steak’ restaurant (as indicated by the large selection thereof) get a supplier who supplies decent cuts, get a chef who can cook steak and, finally, make sure you order in enough product. There were a few other little niggles but let’s not go on any longer… The waitress did reduce our bill, for which I was grateful, but I’d much rather have had a lovely meal which was worth the money.

Stayed two nights for a reunion with long term friends (ex RAF). Check in was easy and quick and staff were very welcoming and helpful. The rooms are quirky and themed around various animals. I was in Zebra room which, unsurprisingly, had a black and white theme. The lighting in the room was dim, which created a nice atmosphere in the evening but was totally inadequate for shaving in the morning. I had to shave by feel in almost darkness. Also, the mirror over the sink is mounted too high on the wall; I am quite short and I could only see the top half of my face in the mirror. The bed was huge but the duvet was smaller than the bed! As I was a single occupant it didn't bother me as I just slept in the middle of the bed but if I had been in a couple we would have been sharing the centre of the bed. My friends, who were a couple said they had exactly the same issue in their room. If you are going to have a queen size bed for goodness sake get a queen size duvet to go on it! As we were a large party, we had pre-ordered our meals from the Table d'Hote menu. My meals were tasty (I loved the crab linguine and the sticky toffee pudding) but, on the second night the roast beef was just warm, not hot. I had also forgotten to order a dessert and, when I asked in there were any desserts available I was told that there were none - not even a scoop of ice cream! Finally, on the Sunday evening, we were informed, just as we were finishing our meal, that the bar would be closing at 9-30pm. Apparently they normally close at 9-00pm on Sundays, but they kept it open an extra 30 minutes for us, but it wasn't what we were expecting for an RAF reunion. I don't think this hotel is accustomed to catering for reasonable large parties.

We were travelling to Newmarket for a weekend of racing to celebrate a big birthday! Choose this inn, as the menu looked good, which it was. Lots of choice and the food was delicious, service very friendly as well. Rooms were lovely and clean, although I did get a bit lost in the long corridor the next morning. Didn't get chance to try breakfast as we were up and out early, however, when we returned, we did see the Sunday Roasts and they looked amazing!! Would liked to have spent more time here as there were areas to relax, read a book or play a game. Would stay here again and highly recommend!

We’ve driven past this place so many times and always thought it looked nice. This week we were looking for somewhere to stop and eat on our way home from a day out and The Bull was my first thought.. They didn’t have any spaces on the website booking but I thought I’d give them a call on an off chance. The team were really accommodating, and managed to squeeze our family of 5 in. My daughter really fancied a mocktail and although not on the menu, the team again were really accommodating and had a go at making one which she said was really nice! The food was delicious and good portion sizes without being too much. A few of us even managed dessert which was also very good! Food prices were very reasonable. Highly recommend and will definitely be back.

See photos! Most light bulbs not working making room and bathroom too dark. Suspect deliberate to keep electricity costs down. Advised management who couldn't help. Black stair carpet plus red & black bedroom with little light and strange red light box bedside tables gave film set brothel look. One bedside light not working and a waste of time anyway as neither could be positioned so you could read a book etc. Cobwebs on very cheap chandelier but fortunately we don't minc spiders. Pillows a bit hard and only one each (plus a red velvet cushion between us to add to the brothel feel). Had booked table in restaurant for dinner which turned out to have only 3 or 4 occupied tables all night. Ordered meal but an hour later nothing had arrived. Apparently inexperienced staff had not managed to put order through so couple who arrived after us were served and we had to reorder. Partner diabetic so ordered a few chips with starters but after reminding them 3 times they eventually came with main meal which was a pasta dish so we did cancel them and they agreed to take them and one starter off bill as we had waited so long. We were told they only had one chef on by way of an explanation. That's actually not our problem. No chance of getting dessert as by the time we had finished meal chef was knocking off. Had order gone through when it should the desserts could have been delicious - we shall never know. Drinks and wine very expensive but you expect that in a good hotel. Tried to talk to someone as we checked out this morning but nobody on reception so had to just leave key. They've got 2 stars rather than 1 because the actual food when it arrived was quite good and the breakfast wasn't bad either.

So, another visit to the Bull after a bike ride. This place has definitely changed for the better, decent prices and really friendly staff. I cannot fault anything. Our go to nearly local (we live in Mildenhall) Well cooked food, nice atmosphere and just a nice place to stop for a casual drink and a bite to eat. We both had the burger again and the onion rings as a side. Chips stay hot for ages as they are wedge like and have maybe been cooked twice or three times and the burgers are lovely. No afters yet as we have always been full up. Highly recommend.

Stopped by on a lovely sunny evening for a drink. Lovely sunny courtyard somewhat sheltered from the A11 traffic noise. Mon -Fri 4-7 there is £1 off pints of lager and cider 😀 We both had the bacon cheeseburger £16.50 and some onion rings £5 to share. Burger was juicy with flame grilled flavour, chunky chips were super hot and crispy! Good size portions and great quality. Will definitely have to try out the Sunday dinner next!!

I came in with my family today and had a cocktail and some lunch. Food was really tasty and the cocktail delicious! The atmosphere was really good, we enjoyed sitting in the courtyard in this beautiful weather. Thank you again for having us! You are always so friendly and welcoming.

I came here with some friends after visiting with my son last time which I had enjoyed. We tried the new menu which was outstanding, followed by a few cocktails. We had a lovely evening visit and were greeted by friendly staff! Thank for a wonderful evening.

Stayed here once again for business and it’s always nice to hear the “welcome back” or “your usual” from the staff. This place has seen such a transformation in the last 12 months that it’s hard to believe I never wanted to stay here. A great catch up with friends for a drink which led to food envy. Watching racks of ribs come past our table, followed by steaks and huge burgers - how could we not order food. The food itself was fantastic only surpassed by the level of service. This has quickly become a favourite haunt for us and a go to place on the weekends.

Amazing lunch, I came here with my son he had a lovely meal from the children’s menu and I chose the special. Really attentive staff we were greeted by a lovely girl whom was from Wales and struck up a conversation, very polite and talkative. She recommended the specials. Really clean everywhere. Thank you!

We had lunch here and the food was delicious. My husband had fish and chips and I had steak ciabatta with chunky chips. Service was prompt. We stayed for a couple of drinks after our meal which were served by friendly staff. We will definitely be back.

Attended the Super Bowl party on Sunday night with a friend. The atmosphere was amazing, the snack menu was very tasty and well priced and the drinks were amazing. I’ve never related this pub with sports but it’s been great to go for a drink in our local and watch the rugby and also the superbowl

Tia and Juan gave us a lovely welcome (Juan had remembered us from a while back) and went out of their way to accommodate us warmly throughout the evening at this characterful inn. The food was delicious, too!

We stayed at the Bull for one night as visiting friends in the area and it was nearest. what a fantastic find, the room was stunning and so well equipped. So much attention to detail. Super king-sized bed, huge fluffy towels, beautiful double ended roll top bath in the room. We did not have dinner as ate out but the menu looked great. The breakfast was delicious and all of the staff were so helpful and friendly. We will definitely be back and can highly recommend a stay.

What a breath of fresh air. Easy to find, good parking. Clean spacious room with a comfortable large bed - we had a large double room.. the bath was massive! It’s hard to keep a 400 year old coach house in good condition but they do a great job. Food was excellent and with a choice of front garden, rear courtyard, bar or restaurant you’re spoiled for choice. What we paid for 2 nights including a freshly good breakfast to order was fantastic value for money. We really enjoyed the millennial walk by the river which is accessed over the bridge very near to the inn making it easier to walk to Mildenhall rather than drive and Barton Mills itself is charming. However the real winners are the people who make this place special. Wendy and Vicki are the true stars of the show and every other one of their colleagues were equally friendly and helpful; however they go further than that to make you feel welcome and valued We are missing you all already ! Worst experience ever!!!! We stayed here for the weekend for a local wedding. Extremely overpriced for the room we got. No staff upon check in. No staff upon breakfast. We literally waited for an hour. When the breakfast arrived it was cold, tough and untasty! We paid top price for our room, it was small and unlike all the rest of our party (we had the whole hotel) the carpet was stained, door did not lock and we was locked in at one point. Staff were rude, distant and unresponsive! DO NOT STAY HERE!

We hadn’t been for years but went recently sat out in courtyard and had a nice lunch and enjoyed ourselves. We then decided to go again and take a friend for a birthday lunch. We arrived around 11.30 to ensure we had a nice outside table. My Husband ventured in to just order some Coffees and got barked at, that they weren’t open yet. The lady then warmed when she realised we weren’t being demanding and drinks were allowed. We waited outside for our friend to join us and then ordered 3 Lattes and they arrived barely warm, but we were busy chatting so just downed them as didn’t want to make a fuss, but if we had I’m sure they would have replaced them. My husband ordered the same main course as he’d had previously as did I and our friend had the Chicken Supreme along with my Husband. It arrived and looked tasty. We started to eat and then our friend a few minutes in made a gasp, grabbed a napkin and at first we thought he was choking or had something foreign in his meal. He had to spit it out and was a bit sick. The Chicken was off. He hadn’t noticed as the Peppercorn Sauce, Crushed New Potatoes and Green Beans had been fine, but as soon as he’d eating a part of the Chicken Breast it was foul. He said it was the most sour thing he’d ever tasted and rushed off to the Loo to rinse his mouth out with the bottle of water he’d been given and asked us to grab him a Whisky to kill the taste and hopefully the bacteria. Another waitress came to take plate back to the kitchen and then returned to state the kitchen said it was fine! They asked if he wanted anything else but he declined and I don’t blame him. My husbands was ok and he’d eaten a reasonable amount but stopped eating when this all happened as did I as I felt very queasy. So we all left our plates. No one came back to apologise to our friend, to ask if we needed dessert or any drinks and they left our plates in front of us. Admittedly they did not charge us for the water of the one whisky but the fact no one acknowledged the issue or apologised left us unhappy. Needless to say we won’t be visiting again under the current management/company. Such a shame as it could be great and it was in past years.

Shame not to write a great review about a local pub. Again another establishment that does not acknowledged or comment on reviews. It always appear that they don’t care or can be bothered. Booked on time have to give a vacation of table time with the long wait for food as we found out it would be hard to estimate. Arrived on time not very busy, given drinks menu and told where we were seated. All drinks and food have to be ordered at the bar. Dirty plates etc at the end of bar still there with others when we left looks terrible and lazy. When to order food but no burger buns when asked why told they are always late buy somewhere local, or change your supplier. Revised order then taken. Note the white bucket chairs small catch on you side hips. Food took a long time to come out but when it did it came out slowly. The food itself however was fine typical but food mash was a bit dry though. Asked if the all OK just as we were nearly all finished a bit late then. Service was OK at best but no enthusiasm but effective. Bar area now looks like it need a good refresh as looking sad and dated. Urinal in toilet blocked looks like it has been for some time not just today as no flush and quite full.

This place was amazing and extremely accommodating. Our stay was extended and Vicky went out of her way to make sure we were able to keep our rooms. Great food, great pub, great people!

This was a last minute booking as I had left an hotel in Newmarket following dreadful disturbance from other inconsiderate guests. After having no sleep it was good to find lovely accommodation within 15 minute drive from Newmarket. Spacious comfortable room with very helpful friendly staff. My huge thanks to Liam for the unexpected surprise gift which cheered me up no end... I had limited meals due to a busy week but,what food I had was very good.I hope to visit again in the future.

I used to love this restaurant and have been many times over the years, however this visit will be my last. My partner and I traveled from Ipswich to have a meal at this once great place. We had perused the online menu and had made decisions on what we’d order. We were super disappointed when we arrived to find the menu online was outdated and were faced with a very lazy alternative menu. After travelling so far we decided to stay and chose something off this terrible new menu. We both decided on bangers and mustard mash. When the food came it looked nice but that’s where the compliments end. The mash was dry and so full of mustard it was inedible. The sausages were ok but there was hardly any gravy to compete with the dry hot mash and the vegetables were microwaved for too long and shrivelled. My partner hates complaining and chose to eat the food I could not eat and even he really struggled with eating my mustard with a dash of potato. My mouth was so hot and my throat sore that I ordered a crème brûlée for myself and a rhubarb and custard Eton mess for my partner. My brûlée was like scrambled egg with a scone so hard that my partner couldn’t break it in half with his hands, I decided for the sake of my teeth, not to try it. My partners dessert was even worse than mine with raw, crunchy, unsweetened rhubarb just piled on top of canned custard and whipped cream with a poor excuse for a meringue on top. The waitresses were really lovely, we were offered a free drink and 1 of our bangers & mash deducted from the bill. The waitress asked us to come back for a chance to rectify our visit however I feel this place has gone so down hill and with a truly rubbish menu, that we will not, due to the risk of disappointment trek that far again.

I’m not one to write a bad review , but tonight I feel I needed to . We have been to the bull on quite a few occasions in the past and have enjoyed with no complaints . This evening was awful !! We arrived and admittedly fairly busy , we were served drinks and shown to a rather sticky table , an hour and a half of waiting for our main course was too much and a poor explanation from the bar man , we left .. in this time we noticed the chef casually walking through the restaurant to get a drink from the bar and having a chit chat with the staff .. clearly priorities weren’t on all her hungry waiting customers .. needless to say we won’t be returning !!

This place has won an award for possibly the worst bar man I have ever come across. Not rude in anyway but the volume of swearing when taking an order is incredible. He also does not seem to like the performance of his fellow staff who it appears had a busy night last night and didn’t clean the bar to his hi standards. Management need to take note and maybe provide some professional responsibility lessons.

We had a fantastic experience with friends when we went for a Sunday roast. We were in a group of 10 and nothing was too much trouble. Special mention to the general manager who helped with a few queries and Vicky who was extremely entertaining and attentive. Food was great - good sized portions and service was great.

We love to visit The Bull. The staff are friendly especially Wendy. She is always happy and greets us with a smile. She must see loads of customers but she seems to remember us and the dogs and greets us with a smile every time.

A rare treat to go out for dinner and with a birthday to celebrate we chose somewhere we thought would be special for 6 family members to eat outside while supporting local business. We booked our table for 6pm and agreed the table was for 2 hours.The Christmas decorations are very pretty and the courtyard does look lovely. However, on arrival we were quite surprised to be spoken to like children when being given the house rules on Covid 19 but also understand the importance of being aware for our own safety so shrugged this off.We were shown to our table and the waitress taking our order was impatient to obtain our drinks requests and barely polite when explaining the one menu per group rule. The cutlery arrived in individual bags which was a nice touch as you feel reassured you are being taken care of.......big mistake As we progressed through our meal the level of rudeness by the owner and her staff when clearing plates and glasses became truly shocking. I wish I had looked on tripadvisor before booking as this seems to be the norm for them! But what was most concerning was that we observed people leaving the table next to ours and no sanitisation of the table or bench seats took place before the next people were shown to that table. The food was just good pub food but but not exceptional and very overpriced when considering the lack of customer skills by the front of house. Definitely won’t return I don’t need to eat here there are plenty of other lovely pubs, hotels and restaurants locally.

My Birthday Dinner last night with my wife, haven’t been out out in a long time so expectations were high. I have got to say that firstly they have adapted to COVID guidelines and having worked in the catering industry before can only imagine how difficult it is to even open the doors in the current world we live in . how staff have to wear masks through their whole shift and still remain pleasant is a credit the establishment and their team. We had the butchers block sharing steaks which was amazing and cooked to perfection. We Have a great meal at the Bull every time we go . Thank you very much and keep up the good work .

I gave a rating 1 however if I could give a minus I would . The place looks lovely all festive and pretty but be warned go inside and you will get frostbite from the owner , the one menu your given for one table just doesn’t make any sense ? is having less paper within one support bubble / household help stop the spread of Covid ! I don’t mind expensive but I like prices to be realistic , I mean seriously one tiny tin of coke £1.90 ... if you want an upmarket establishment the owner will need to go on a customer service course. I don’t wish anyone bad in such terrible times but Covid isn’t going to shut this place the owner will

We havent been to the bull for years, but having seen they sell a chateaubriand we made the hour long trip to go back. The food was delicious, the atmosphere was still vibrant (something that seems to be missing in many restaurants at the moment!) We were sat, service was friendly, covid precautions were followed to the letter. The chateaubriand was the best steak weve had in a long time. The toffee pud is still amazing according to our daughter,whilst my wife and I didnt have room for dessert, we did enquire about taking away dessert for later we were told that they couldnt do that one due to being served in glasses, but they delivered us a small portion free of charge, this is how lovely they are to their customers. We also had the service fee added to our bill, but it does say you can have it removed if you're unhappy, but because were not absolute skeezers we couldnt do that, the staff are working in a pandemic, to help us have the luxury of a meal out, let's not be tight when it comes to showing our appreciation for them, eh? Hoping to go back more frequently...The fish and chips is also very good!

Great service, very good on COVID rules and processes. Food was divine so will definitely recommend and plan a revisit.
