Very upset and angry.i entered the pub with my friend via the beer garden and took a table in the smoking area.my friend has a 4 month old toy poodle puppy.there were no signs to say dogs not allowed.when the bar staff btought our meals-on plates- she told us that we must leave immediately.we were not allowed to eat our food.she offered to give us takeaway cartons but could only find one,so we had to squash both meals in the one box.the lid couldnt close so we had to eat it as soon as possible before it got cold and spoily even more.i appreciate that the pub have the right to ban dogs but there should have been a sign up..there were children running kicking a ball in the garden weaving in and out of tables but that was acceptable,whereas a small puppy on a lead sat quietly under the table wasnt.i dont regard this as good service.my meal out with a friend was ruined

What a hole. Not even allowed to stand at the bar when your on your own. What a load of rubbish Stupid rubbish. Can stand anywhere were else happily.

A little more organised than many "Spoons". Clean and good value for money. The app still has no way of taking stuff of your order, so we had to order at the busy bar.

The gamon steak I had was cremated and the tomatoes were charcoal. Clearly the worst steak I have ever been served.

Friday lunch time, we popped in for some lunch whilst shopping. We sat in the family section as we had a small child, the place was packed which absolutely fine but it still felt quite cold. We ordered food and drink via the app which was very straight forward, a lot of the children options were out of stock. Drinks arrived quickly and the gentleman serving was friendly. We visited the day stairs toilet with my child and it was quite dirty and smelt of urine. Our food arrive in a timely manner, and was good portion size, including the children plates. Unfortunately the food was all warm at very best, the beans on my child plates were cold and the chips were way over cooked like they had been double fried to reheat but were still cold, as were the adults jacket potatoes. The food was terrible. No one returned to check on the food whilst we was there, even after finishing we sat and talked but no one approached table despite them walking past several times. Shame really, it use to be a good place to eat for a shopping lunch or breakfast.

Breakfast not good and they’d cooked it in a rush. I had this at later morning around 1130am. When it came to my table I had no more than 2 table spoons of beans and the eggs were over done and the yoke was dry. I tried to get staff attention before I ate it but they kept avoiding where I was sitting. I ate everything other than the eggs and even afterwards while I sat and finished my drink many members past me but wouldn’t approach my table to even take the plate away. I’d had a breakfast a week before but around 9am in the morning, it seems they worry about quality in the morning but the later morning to when they are due to stop serving they lose interest in quality

I have just got back from a terrible family meal at the Golden Lion in Newmarket. Firstly it was freezing cold and we all kept our coats on. But the most frustrating thing was a young waiter who looked about 16 himself challenged my 23 year old son for ID as he ordered a pint,but not my 18 year old daughter. Stupidly he had not brought his driving licence but had a phot copy of his passport clearly explaining he was nearly 24..That was not good enough and when the manageress came over she would not except it. But when I said by law I can buy a pint of lager for my son if we are eating a family meal, she had no idea of that law. Surely Wetherspoons can do better. Put some bloody heating on and teach your so called manager the proper rules.. And also even the food was cold in that extremely uncosy pub.

Got let down with another reservation so thought we would try the Golden Lion. Ordered food and drinks via the app..after 20 mins I asked at the bar as to where our drinks were.. Barman barked at me to show him a receipt.. I said I paid via the app and showed him the screenshot.. he said I must show him the email receipt and he told me it’s impossible to order from the app without adding an email address. I told him it most certainly was possible at which time he said I was lying. I proved it to him (screenshot below) He then basically said I’m not getting my food or drink and if a payment comes out my bank then raise a dispute. Whilst I appreciate the order may not have gone through I do not appreciate being talked down to by the man in question, nor his i simulation I was trying to scam free food. I doubt this guy would talk the way he did without the bar between him and his customers.

Staff: polite, professional, service with a smile. Simply can't fault any of them and you wouldn't get a better team in any establishment. Drink: amazing range, great beer, the very reason I'm here. Food: quick, hot, tasty. Clientele: this is where it all falls down. Please increase the prices Tim Martin, I'll come here more often if you do.

We live in town and have been here many times. It's the wetherspoons expected, usual format and used to be fine, but lately has gone noticeably downhill. As mentioned in previous posts, "the regulars" clientelle need moving on as they disrupt the experience of other customers and diners, with their shouting and foul mouth chat. The staff witness it and turn a blind eye. Food: who does the ordering? Last night there was no chicken and they had run out of steaks!! I had to reorder 3 times! Not the first time this has happened as they don't seem to make any allowance for tattersalls sales weeks and race meetings. The surroundings are in bad decorative repair and there are several stains on the ceiling, filthy stained carpets and unwiped tables. The whole place needs refurbishment.

Called in for lunch whilst visiting local area. Food arrived quickly and was very tasty. Plenty of choice on the menu. There really is something for everyone. You can't knock this place for value either. Drinks and food are very competitively priced. Staff were friendly and efficient. All in all a brilliant visit. We'll return!

It's time the prices went up in Wetherspoons. Everything's fine, you know I really don't mind eating and drinking amongst, shall we just say, the less wealthy in our community... but why do they have to make ***so much noise***? Busts my eardrums and boils my p1ss. They can't talk, they have to shout, all the time, even on the occasions when they're not blind drunk. I've been here too many times now, constantly moving tables, now sadly I'm now having to explore other pub alternatives. The staff are just brilliant here - always pleasant, polite and very professional - the best in fact. If only I could find somewhere the same but more expensive. I love the food and drinks here, but now I need to move on and hope for the premium version by Tim Martin soon, please!

Popped in for dinner and was pleasantly surprised by how nice the food was. We ordered via the app and food and drinks came nice and quickly. Harry was serving us and I must say he is an absolute credit to Wetherspoons!

We often stay in Newmarket, but have never had an evening meal in Wetherspoons. I had pasta or what resembled pasta, it was a gluggy mess. If I'd turned my plate upside down it would have stayed in the plate. The meal was luke warm. My husband had a burger and chips, he said it was the worst burger he'd eaten and the chips needed CPR. Messy tables which hadn't been cleared. Awful experience and the manager needs to pull his / her finger out. Won't be going back

Once seated in the pub. The conversations that was going on between Staff and a regular customer was disgusting. Talking about ladies private areas and human faeces which I thought was vile.

We had the misfortune to visit the Golden Lion this weekend. Although we know Witherspoon pubs are at the bottom of the food chain I didn’t know quite how bad they were. Cheep? Yes. Nice? No. The staff were rude, ordering guests around like school...

Doors unlocked, so I'm we go to be told not open till 9a,m (it was in fact 8.59!) They locked the doors behind us. Reopened at 9.05, new place, for us, but was not told how their system worked. They obviously had regulars who walked...

Staff where extremely rude and not helpful, they told us we should go and get breakfast elsewhere, if we couldn’t figure out their app.. which we did walk round the corner to the pantry and got the best breakfast in town.

Too much to write. Rude service and employees. they have removed my girlfirend`s food and drink while we went to smoke outside. Just simply the worst place ever! Also liars.

This was OK for a breakfast but they really should not be expecting customers to clear away the piles of dirty dishes and rubbish left by other people. What is the point of asking people to get a clean mug when you refill a coffee...

I went in, floor signing was all I ever the please they have it back to front. I was tired but not to serve me a beer when I could just go back next door and get a beer. The man in charge was rude and has lost a lot of business from that, no not from the old drunk guys that sit there all day but from the younger people. I just wanted one for the road but to be so rude is a disgrace. If he wanted to close he should have said so like next door did politely and told me the time but I believe they are open midnight! Needs a new job cause he cannot work in this industry.

Can’t fault place. Staff are fab, you know who you are! Especially during these awkward times. Keep up the good work.

Walked in, none of the empty tables has been cleared or cleaned, staff wandering about but not doing anything.. Didn't stay went somewhere else where it was better service and cleaner.

A very busy pub,but gets the food out fast,no complaints though it was hot and good value..For such a busy place the toilets were very clean and fresh

Cannot fault this place on their food and drink plus using the app to order is such a great feature, however the young female staff members in particular are awful rude and disintrested all they do is talk to each other and ignore you!

Have been coming to spoons for years. Food is always spot on for what you pay and comes out super quick. Management and staff have improved massively in recent months. Full credit to the Newmarket team.

This is a return visit to the Golden lion. A typical Weatherspoons, great food, for a reasonable price. Lovely helpful staff. Clean toilets can't really ask for much more.

Have been toa few Weatherspoons Letchworth, Royston, March and Newmarket. Feel very comfortable in most of them like the atmosphere in the Newmarket Weatherspoons, though to be honest all have very friendly helpful staff and would recommend any one of these Weatherspoons places, great food and prices unbelievable,

We often eat here. There is a good choice of food which arrives quickly and looks as good as it tastes. It’s quieter at the back as the bar drinkers at the front can get noisy. More tables for bigger groups would be appreciated as it is often hard for a group of six or more to sit comfortably. The prices are very reasonable and coffee mugs can be refilled as much as you can drink.

A good feed and very good ale. Mush rissoto hot. Pleasant surroundings.. Happy staff. Chic buttermilk burger very crisp but delicious. Alas the only thing that spoilt it was when we sat! Near a door. Drafy.

Stopped by for breakfast about 0830 before shopping. We had a large breakfast and a beans on toast. Could not complain about the portion size for the breakfast (see photo) all very tasty only problem beans on the cold side and it would have been nice to have a second butter as double toast. The beans on the toast was a good. Over all very nice and great value for money with free tea or coffee refills.

Everything was going great till around 3.20pm when a bunch of teenagers came and sat next to us,swearing and shouting.we notice one of the lads was about to start his shift as we could hear him saying to his friends.he was wearing his uniform as well.i couldn't believe how much he was swearing in his work place.we ate up quick as couldn't wait to get out of there

Visited with my daughter and service was great and food was amazing and my daughter loved it. Defiantly recommend for family’s.

My wife had steak which was tough it was replaced with equally tough steak member of staff said sorry and changing menu later in month which really did not help us at all. So much for customer service well done Tom Martin .

We had a great day out at Newmarket races on our yearly July visit with a group of family and friends.

Wow, how busy today. Staff pleasant and friendly, although they all must have lost some of their hair. Patience is a virtue

For our lunch on Thursday we found uncleared tables, food scraps on the floor around the tables and the service and food slow and not well presented. Maybe an off day, maybe staff shortages, or maybe this was the norm for this pub in this town. I will think twice about having lunch here again. Such a shame because most Wetherspoons excel at providing good food and drink coupled with excellent value and a clean and presentable ambience.

Finished work late and with some foreign colleagues went for a walk around Newmarket. The feeling in need of a meal and beer went to the Golden Lion on the basis it was nearest. Standard Weatherspoon’s fare but I do wish the servers had been more willing to wipe the tables. The food order taken by app was quickly delivered and it’s was well cooked, there was plenty of it and it was good value. We enjoyed ourselves.

Just been with my partner at Golden Lion...we visit this place very often...tonight my partner has been searched for no reason...well because he went outside to smoke one of the bar staff assumed that he was selling drugs..and then the same bar staff assumed that my partner is on drugs...just lovely to be watched for a long period of time by security and all possible staff from the shift. He was treated as a potential criminal for no reason. I do understand that their job is not easy but there are boundaries that shouldn't be crossed.I am very disappointed with this place as I witnessed on numerous occasions no reactions to unsocial behaviours.. it's a good place but bare in mind that you need to make sure you pass face control first. I know how it sounds now....but ... anyway...nothing found as nothing was there at first place..no apology for discomfort that had been caused..

The Golden Lion is a wonderful place for all ages and for any time of day. While living in Newmarket, my husband and I spent many nights there for date nights, family dinners, and nights out with friends. Along with the great atmosphere, you will find wonderful food for a great deal. I highly recommend The Golden Lion for your next meal in Newmarket!

Arrived about 1.15 the pub was very busy as it was race day At Newmarket, the pub is in high street so busy, had a really good value lunch with drink , I had a veggie wrap with salad it was really delicious, Hubble had a classic burger and chips which was hot and tasty. Well worth a visit, good value and tasty food

Am beginning to think that “no beans” doesn’t make sense to the staff at this Wetherspoons. This visit was my second visit for breakfast with my partner, as we had something to do in town at 9am. I asked for a veggie breakfast, no beans and my partner had the traditional breakfast.

Knew food wasn’t remarkable from other chains. Tables dirty with left glasses and sticky, rowdy customers, but food quick and edible and extremely reasonably priced

We visited after a day at the races followed by live music on the racecourse. We wanted something simple to eat and this met our requirements. The value was amazing for what we had and the quality was pretty good. We went back for breakfast the next morning, equally good value for a full English breakfast and bottomless coffee which was also very acceptable. Clean plates all round.

After waiting ages for our meal at the Rutland Arms which didn't turn up we crossed the road to the Golden Lion.

we have revisited golden lion ( weatherspoons ) again after some time. My last review was not good and we decided to see if it had changed. No , it hasn't ….We had a breakfast , a cold breakfast. We asked for soft eggs … No only one was soft. The other one was hard... You can ask for hot food and other things but you don't get it. So we wont be going back.

The Golden Lion is een enorm grote pub. Ondanks dat hangt er een redelijk goede sfeer, al zie je er wel gokkasten en schermen waarop paardenrennen worden getoond. Maar wat wil je in Newmarket? De keuken is redelijk, de kaart vertoont de gebruikelijk pub-gerechten. Prijzen zijn alleszins redelijk. Goed voor een snelle hap.

We patronise Wetherspoons restaurants whenever possible because they are usually excellent value and good food. This one wasn’t. We both had the Friday fish and chip meal deal. Fish overcooked, batter really greasy and hence thoroughly unpleasant,

We had dinner early around 6pm. The pub was relatively busy but we found a table and the service was quick and efficient. Menu is standard Wetherspoon fare and selected main courses which included a drink. Food was good, reasonably priced and served hot.

We visited this Wetherspoons as it’s one we hadn’t been in before and expected the usual polite service from Spoons staff. I decided to order from the bar and not the app as it didn’t seem too busy. It was. very difficult to work out which member of staff was on which till as they seemed to go from one to another. I stood behind one other person so expected to be served after them but the staff member was suddenly serving someone who had pushed in. Not one to make a fuss I decided to let this go expecting to be served next only to find the staff member go off and serve someone else further up the bar who hadn’t been waiting as long as me.

So I come in here quite a lot in the mornings with friends for breakfast. And never had a problem but today they made me feel very awkward and were rude. I have started a diet and when I asked if the eggs could be poached and the bacon and sausages to be grilled the bar staff got funny with me and said that they didn’t do this they fry everything. Which I knew was a lie so I asked her to go and check with the chef for me, which then she sighed and rolled her eyes, like she didn’t want to. They seem to lack badly lately in the staff and manours and I don’t think I will be visiting here together, also healthy/dieting food options are very limited and you are felt to feel awkward asking for this changes. I’m very apauled

My wife and I called in here when we were visiting Newmarket. A Wednesday lunchtime and it was very busy. Having said that service at the bar was quick. Wetherspoons always had good value alcoholic and non alcoholic drinks available. Today was no exception . Out light meals were quickly brought out and were good value for money. Give it a try.

the burgers were juicy and the chips were Hot and crispy and loads at least 6 onion rings! Great price with a drink too . Staff attentive and served quickly and empy plates and glasses taken away quickly

Went to eat here during a busy peak shift with my family. We were very happy with the size of food we received, was lovely and hot. My mum wasn’t overly pleased with her steak but was able to change it with no bother and a fresh bit was bought out to us. So overall, we were all happy.

Me and my family went here for tea and I must say it is very good value for money, the food was lovely and hot and the staff where very friendly,I definitely would recommend.

This is honestly the worst Wetherspoons I've ever been in

Ended up in Wetherspoons yet again as they offer excellent choice and good quality. Although it was Curry night we tend to avoid their rather bland Indian food.

As Wetherspoons go, this one is rather good. Nicely laid out, comfy seats, clean tables. and decent enough service.. Thats all you want really. Usual Wetherspoons breakfast range, and endless coffee refills.

Shock horror don't panic I have not gone mad! This is only the 2nd Wetherspoons I have been in that has served my food on a hot plate, to whom had clarify I have asbestos hands, so I can pick it up but if my hubby cant (delicate hands) then its a hot plate. We visit many Wetherspoons in our area and the gripe in all especially our local is we never get a hot plate! We realise that Wetherspoons is good grub a good prices but ...... Hot food on a hot plate.

Visited last night with the family, food was lovely, great service, prices were very reasonable, will return soon.

Large, busy place. Huge selection of beers most about £2 a pint. Good food served in reasonable time considering how busy they were. Enough staff when we were there to cope with customers which is sometimes a downfall with this company.

Met with friends before horse racing. It's the first time I've been to this jd wetherspoons pub and I was pleasantly surprised how clean it was inside and it also had a beer garden we stopped for lunch and some drinks before heading to the racecourse

We frequent Newmarket each year, but this is the first to try the Golden Lion. Superb pub food and tons of locals.

Stopped by for breakfast today and everything was great. Good service, nice hot food and good value for money.

Let me start this by saying that I rate a Wetherspoons breakfast, so had no qualms visiting for breakfast.

Until 12 midday excellent breakfasts. Locals drop in for chatting over unlimited excellent machine coffee. Service is good and well chosen staff a real assett. Food a standard Weatherspoons with daily special. Excellent range of Ales.

Typical Wetherspoons, good food at an affordable price. Stopped here on route with our grandson of 10 for our holiday on the Suffolk coast, the service was good and the food also, but it is obviously a local as there was some men behind us effing and jeffing all our meal time, not great for your business as it is a family restaurant, just ate and left which was a shame, as there were families also around us with young children and they were in earshot of the bar.

We stopped here prior to going to the races at Newmarket on a Saturday lunchtime for some food and drinks.

Been to plenty of spoons’ up and down the country and this is by far the worst. Staff behind the bar swearing, ignoring customers and just downright rude and ignorant.

Walked in and not very busy, waited 5 minutes and walked out. More interested in serving their friends first then customers who were there first. Second time of being told in a minute was enough for me. Plenty of other places to go.

Up until a few weeks ago I enjoyed going to Wetherspoons. Unfortunately things have gone downhill. Staff look unhappy and customers are leaving in droves. Glasses hanging up where some of the staff can't reach them and don't look as if they have been cleaned properly. Used to feel comfortable walking in on my own, but not now. Management is not catering to the backbone of its customers, only their own interests. Thank goodness The Bull and the Wagon and Horses are just down the road.

Called at at about 0830 place busy nice and clean got severed quickly order two regular breakfasts no problem changing an egg for a mushroom on one of them. The orange juice was nice especially as a slice of orange added which gave extra taste not added in the nearby Bury St Edmunds establishment. The breakfast was as expected tasty, all cooked well and hot. Good value for money.

Management and Staff really need to have training... Staff behind bar are so unprofessional. Messing about behind bar, not paying attention to paying customers. Managers not overseeing movements of bar staff and floor staff...

Just visited Newmarket Weathespoons for a Sunday bite to eat. On the face looks to be very good value for money. Wife ordered chicken and rib combo and I chose the 14oz rump steak with a drink each shade under £25. So far so good food arrived in a timely fashion looked ok then it went downhill. Wife said ribs were ok but chicken was very dry and bland, my steak was tougher than Mike Tyson on steroids! Needed a chainsaw to cut it ! I don't like to complain but I felt I needed to say something only to be met with " well you've eaten the chips one mushroom and one tomato " shocking I was expecting at least an apology. Won't be going back

I was always going here just for drinks at late night.For the first time your manager(she looked like manager-blond girl),she let us ordered the drinks at 55past midnight without letting us now that we have to finish it at the garden 5mins after we get our drinks.Then,after few months, friends of mine came to join us for drink and this same lady did the same.Sent us out to finish the drinks without letting my friend to use the toilet!!!WE spent there lots of money for drink and she did that?!afterwards we were in garden drinking our drinks and we seen people coming in to use the toilet!!!

The prices are very low, but so is the service and cleanliness. Every time we have been there the staff are distracted and slow and most of the tables have not been cleared from previous customers. Generally feels a bit grubby and neglected.

Disappointed the chain have changed the menu, taking out a lot of choices me and my boyfriend regularly have (especially the vegan options). But quick service as always.

We got two dinners and drinks here for £14 which was excellent value, especially given the quality of the food was good. If you’re on a tight budget, there are worse places you can eat for sure.

We love Wetherspoons and the Golden Lion never disappoints so far as the food is concerned but this pub is one of the more manky ones in this chain.

The breakfast was good value and served hot - unusual for a Wetherspoons. The tea was disgusting but I think that was more to do with the water than the tea bags - it was scummy and tasted vile! The staff were friendly. I've given it 3 because the place needs refurbishing.

We really enjoy this place . Breakfasts here are the best .We were served by a lady who when she saw the teacake said ' I'd say that was burnt would you like another .' Really pleasant experience. We went in on Saturday night and although crowded ,the staff were very pleasant ,and competent , and food was served promptly . When 'Spoons is like this what's not too like?

We stopped here and the venue was ok. We had a lager and coke and a quick bite to eat. The food was ok pub food and was served quickly. The venue is quite large with plenty of seating. Exactly what you expect from a chain.

I have eaten and drank here many a time and the service is usually quite good and can be quick if not too crowded. It’s a bit dated and perhaps not kept as clean as it could be but depending on what you order, it can be ok. They used to do roast dinners on a Sunday but, unfortunately they don’t anymore.
