Food was great and cam the waiter was brilliant

Ive been wanting to have a Sunday roast at The Bull in Ditching for a long time, so sad to say that it was hugely disappointing. A small piece of dry chicken, dry, dense roast potatoes, overcooked veg and tasteless gravy. Additionally, I had an issue with my meal, which although dealt with, it was dealt with incorrectly. An overall very disappointing experience.

We had a lovely time last week (22 April 2025) to celebrate a family birthday. We were made welcome by the staff. Food was excellent. We had different dishes but everyone enjoyed their meals. Special thanks for Jamie D. He was polite, friendly and attentive. We had a thoroughly lovely evening and will undoubtedly return. Thank you everyone at The Bull.

The beer garden is lovely especially on a sunny day. Sitting in the beer garden you order food and drinks from the hut, so can’t make any comment on service because apart from bringing the food and taking away the plates we didn’t have much interaction - but of what I did have staff were perfectly pleasant. I ordered a pork roast, the meat itself was lovely and moist and flavourful albeit with minimal crackling, the accompanying veggies and roast potatoes were fine nothing amazing - the potatoes weren’t crispy on the outside. Overall the meal was perfectly fine for a pub meal, I wasn’t disappointed but equally it was amazing. I would come back though to try the normal menu.

The fish and sausage were OK but the steak was inedible and came with an elderly salad with since of rot. The 'kebab' was obscene and tasted dry and tough.

Staying 1 night in the Bull and had a wonderful dinner with fantastic service from Jamie D. Reasonably priced and great drinks selection. Food was very tasty. The Homemade bread for starters is a must

We had a lovely lunch, and although we were a large group of 11 people, the roasts were excellent, a couple of us had dishes from the main menu, also delicious, and everything came out on time and in a relaxed way, the waiting staff were friendly. Thank you for a wonderful family meal. We’ve eaten at The Bull before but not in a large group, and it’s always good.

My friend and I had the most delicious meal at The Bull at the start of April. Everything about the place was great. We loved the decor, the atmosphere, the service and all of the staff who were friendly, helpful and welcoming. We had had a long drive from Surrey and a long half term as teachers and we absolutely shattered upon arriving in Ditchling. Fortunately my friend had the foresight to look into eateries in the area in advance of our arrival and since we could only go by reviews from strangers and the look of the menu online, we picked The Bull as both were favourable. As soon as we arrived we knew we had made the right choice. The Bull manages to be stylish and welcoming at the same time. We were welcomed by smiley and convivial staff and seated in a comfortable spot perfect for people watching. The menu had an ideal amount of choice and everything sounded so delicious that the only difficulty of our visit was choosing. The meals we did choose were fresh, delicious and nicely presented in decent portions. The quality and taste was of course reflected in the prices being not cheap but we felt this was completely justified as the food was all delicious and the experience pleasant from start to end.

Went for Sunday lunch and everything was delicious. The roast chicken particularly so! Food arrived quickly, service was attentive and friendly and they kept checking back on us. We ended up staying 6 hours and had more food later on! Would definitely return for Sunday lunch (or dinner!) again.

The Bull is a lovely place with great food and atmosphere. Louisa’s service was outstanding—friendly, attentive, and made us feel so welcome. Highly recommend!

I had an amazing roast, the new menu was great, and the service from Louisa was exceptional, a great visit to ditchling, 10/10 would come again.

Sue attended with Five friends. They all had different Meals and rated Food excellent. Their Waitress was very nice and the service was great. The Pub is lovely.

Great roast dinner - really tasty roast beef and potatoes. The chips are also crispy and tasty. Best roast I've had in a long time. Recommended.

Thank you My Mum, my sister and I came on the evening of mother's day. The staff were charming and helpful, the food was delicious and the ambience, as usual, friendly and laid back while the service is efficient and prompt.

The food was really good but I didn't feel like the server took my severe nut allergy seriously which was disappointing.

The food was very good the service was excellent, nice and always smiling, the place is cosy, with the fireplace law ceilings…have a good size parking, in the middle of Southdown National Park, the villanos small but really nice. Rooms are very good, mattress very comfortable a lot of amenities, fantastic experience, we will repeat again!

The food was excellent, great choice of wine and beer. Enjoyed our lunch. Philomena was brilliant , very organised, and made us laugh. An asset to the pub.

I had the ox cheeks and it was delicious. Philo was our server and she was brilliant.

We’re regular visitors to the Bull, the food is always amazing. We love the menu of traditional British home cooked meals. We were served by Philo who is warm and welcoming with a great sense of humour. She always goes above and beyond to make sure you have everything you need and will often tell you a good joke.

I very much enjoyed my service here today. My server alfie was very polite, friendly, helpful and served us with a smile. The atmosphere was not my cup of tea but I can see why people enjoy it. The food was quite spenny for what it is but it was nice non the less.

The Bull is always reliably good food and excellent service! In particular, Philo always goes above and beyond to look after us! Thank you! Highly recommend

What a great pub for a Sunday Roast with liovely staff & jovial atmosphere. We had roast beef & roast pork with delicious veg, homemade yorkshire and proper roast potatoes. Good portions and everything came up fresh & piping hot. What made it an extra nice experience was that every single member of staff was smiling and super helpful but not in your face. We finished off with a shared rhubarb & apple crumble. We loved it here!

Lovely traditional village pub. Warm and friendly atmosphere, attentive and knowledgeable staff and most importantly really good food.

Me and my partner had a lovely date here. Lovely menu and great selection of drinks. It's beautifully set up and has great old vibe, along side a modern feel to it. It's dog friendly which is a big tick for us too. Staff are lovely. 10/10

Had a lovely roast - both the beef and the pork were cooked perfectly and the portion sizes were very generous. There was a good mix of vegetables on the plate and plenty of gravy. Our server, Philo was great - very attentive without being overbearing. We had a lovely time.

Had breakfast on a cold morning and was overjoyed to find an open fire which added to the ambience. Well cooked breakfast and excellent service.

We had such lovely service from Philomena. Who was very accomplished at serving quickly and efficiently the wonderful food. We had Mackerel Paté, Scallops, Cider battered haddock and chips and a wonderful Beer and Guinness pie. It was absolutely delicious and we really appreciated the service with a smile and wonderful sense of humour. Hopefully we'll be back very soon.

We had a lovely meal here, I had Haddock and chips, my mate had fennel sausages and mash. Both meals were well portioned and very tasty. Lauren our server was very helpful and friendly, a credit to your establishment. My dogs were allowed in and welcomed. All in all we had a great evening. Thank you

Lovely birthday meal for two of my friends Food was great and lots of it. The steak pies and calves liver and bacon were delicious. We all enjoyed the French onion soup as starters. Banoffee pie and cheese and biscuits finished off a splendid meal. Service was good too and our dog was looked after and found a playmate

Lovely atmosphere, nice food. Although more of a range of gluten free food for non-meat eaters would be my only recommendation regarding the food. The service wasn’t great. We weren’t told what Sunday roasts had been sold out until we ordered and then were told. We ordered tap water, which arrived quickly but with no glasses so we had to take some from the table next to us ourselves. We ordered a second beer but it never arrived so we had to go to the bar mid-meal and order our own!

Stayed here recently for a quick over nighter before an early Gatwick flight … what a place . Amazing atmosphere , really friendly staff. The food was great , hearty and warming . And the room was perfect , really clean , really quiet , comfy bed ! What more Could you want ! Would highly recommend , only 30 mins fro Gatwick and much better then those soulless airport hotels !

Really lovely gluten free fish and chips - separate fryer and they do all their batter GF so it felt like they really got it and took allergies seriously. I’ve been quite a few times mid-week and it’s always buzzing in the bar. Lovely garden for the summer.

A big thank you to the team at The Bull for their care and consideration .I brought a very dear friend who has very specific dietary requirements due to a long term health condition ,over for dinner last week . My advance note about the dietaries had been clearly noted and a menu highlighted specifically around the options available ( of which we were delighted there were so many ) was very welcome and we had a lovely meal , with excellent service - thank you so much , it meant a lot to us.

Excellent experience at The Bull. There was a mix up with the order but staff were very apologetic and couldn't do enough to put it right. These things happen but it’s the actions taken to rectify the matter which count.

Great food wonderful ambience Despite having a chimney fire just before we arrived, they gave us free coffee and blankets to keep warm while we waited for 20 minutes

Had liver which was swimming in gravy completely covering the sweet mash. Not good at all. Should use Streaky Bacon. Witnessed a good number of half eaten plates of food being left. Will not go back. Actually there is nothing in Ditchling that is inspiring at all.

Philamena is the most fabulous member of staff. Everytime we visit she welcomes us so warmly & wholeheartedly. She has a great sense if humour and amazing service skills & kindness. You make our visit everytime!!

I was invited by a colleague and did not know this pub. How welcoming!! A lovely cosy pub and my dog was welcomed so well. There was a lovely lady looking after us called philo. Just so lovely and she looked after us well. And my dog!! We will be back

Lovely location and interior. Very popular. However, I ordered fish and chips. The fish was mainly batter and greasy. Not impressed. My partner ordered liver and bacon which was ok but overpriced. Will return for a drink and a snack but not for a main meal.

Very noisy, service was good. We both had pork belly and it had a lot of flavour but not crispy at all . Sticky toffee pudding very dry and pale, hardly any sauce. Banoffee pie was delicious but should have had honeycomb or salted caramel ice cream, but don’t think it was either flavour. Very disappointing and would not visit again.

Enjoyed a lunch here with three friends. Modern fresh restaurant vibe rather than traditional pub. Three enjoyable well cooked mains, but the liver (and bacon) was a bit tough. The mackerel paté was an excellent tasty starter. Only disappointment was the banofie dessert. Couldn't trace the honeycomb and overall it was just a bit bland and meh. Three guests, but none cleared their plate. Otherwise, worth another visit. Server was helpful and drinks were fine. Good parking and other diners around made for a pleasant atmosphere.

My friend and I had drinks at The Bull this evening. Lucy, our waitress, was very friendly and hospitable, taking great care of us. The drinks were great, and the vibe in the dining area was lovely and cosy. Highly recommend!

Jamie was a life saver for me, I badly choked on some bread and was struggling to breath. He helped dislodge by hitting my back, along with my friend, they got me to the ladies and I managed to clear the obstruction. He checked on me twice along with other staff who brought some ice cream to sooth my throat . 24 hours later I recieved a call from the manager Paul, to see how I was. Wonderful customer care and super staff. Thank you very much 😊

Loved the welcome and the big fireplace

This pub has a wonderful ambience with a real fire and very friendly staff. We had our family christmas get together over lunch and the food was excellent. It was a great start to our christmas celebrations.

Group of friends enjoy regular meet-ups here in front of the log fire. Brilliant pub in every way - very friendly service, excellent food with an imaginative menu.

We enjoyed our first visit to The Bull which was recommended to us by my son. Our meal was very tasty and it was great that it was served up piping hot. Generous portions. Would definitely return again if we are visiting our family in the area so it’s a thank you from us and a well done 👏

Very nice evening meal at the Bull (Steak and Guinness pie was delicious as was the trout ). A little more veg on the plate would have been perfect. Had to go looking for the waitress once and more attentive service would have meant more drinks ordered but overall very enjoyable.

We had roast dinner and it was very disappointing. The potato's were soft and not roasted as they should. The gravy was tasteless and out of the jar. Cold and no taste. Very disappointing. We like the place but the food was not good for the price they charge as well. The service was average and not friendly. The atmosphere was ok but not Christmassy enough with minimum decoration which is fine as we went for Sunday lunch which is a shame as we planned it for a long time and a shame that Food wasn't good.

I’ve stayed at The Bull several times through work and look forward to staying with my wife! I can’t praise the food, the rooms and the breakfast enough, they are outstanding! Natalie has made us feel welcome and remembers us on our return!

Great menu normally but didn’t really rate the fish stew; the potatoes were hard & inedible, too creamy & not with tomatoes as for my liking & a dish without one vegetable didn’t really do it for me. Visited many times and normally their fish & chips is fabulous.

Fantastic! The Bull has had a significant extension since the last time I visited. Clean & modern. The food - we visited on Sunday - was great…roast beef was tender with fresh seasonal veg & an enormous Yorkshire pudding. They were helpful when we called to alter our timings slightly. Can’t wait to visit again

Very mediocre experience. We know the Bull well, going back decades but have not been for many years. Did not have a starter and chose sausages and mash for mains, expecting good quality butcher's sausages. Not so. The sausages could have come out of any supermarket "value pack", the mash was lumpy and very dry and under-seasoned. The stem broccoli was too al dente (I like al dente!) and barely cooked. My husband had ham, eggs and chips. Well you can't really go wrong with that and it was indeed much better. We shared a sticky toffee pud. Definitely not home cooked and the toffee sauce too thin, like soup. Unless there's a change of chef(s), we will not be back for food.

Met up with some friends for lunch, which was delicious - the scallop starters was excellent. Great and prompt service offered by Olivia and very well looked after, again, by Philo. Thanks!
