Excellent little bakery if a little chaotic! Small Sussex-based chain using local flour. Prices reasonable for quality, for example a salad and quiche for lunch was £9 95. Bread loaves delicious, around £4.50. Counter gets busy , handling cafe and takeaway customers..

Popped in today for some lunch! I waited behind the counter while the Server slouched back scrolling on her phone and made duck noises. The server saw me looked me up and down and carried on scrolling. Needless to say I walked out. It felt quite hostile in there tbh and I won't be going back. I hear this bakery complained about Gail's coming to Lewes yet Gails' customer service is 100 times better. Awful.

Fantastic service. The staff work really hard and long hours and are very friendly and professional. I have seen very entitled and rude older customers trying to push their way to get a table even though there are people in front of them . They try to deal with this behaviour as well as they can. We love it - the coffee and food is great too !

The Bakewell slice is more like a victoria cake without cream, not a lot of flavour. It does not taste of anything like a Bakewell tart. The savoury sandwich selection is limited, not like the Brighton branch. The coffee cake slice was really good, as was the focaccia cheese, pesto toastie.

I’ve been going to Flint Owl regularly since it opened about 10(?) years ago and I’ve been increasingly disappointed by the service and attitude of the staff. A few years ago they were lovely but they are now surly and rude. The last time I went, as usual one of us queued while I found a table- I stress we have always done this without a problem. As I sat down one of the staff members called out to me loudly enough to catch the attention of all the customers, came storming over to me and told me ‘NO’, then instructed me that I should queue like everyone else and then they would do their best to find me a seat. It was rude, aggressive and shocking. If the policy has changed perhaps people should be informed politely and discreetly, not embarrassed in front of lots of people. I will not be going again. There are some absolutely lovely coffee shops and cafes in Lewes where the staff are friendly and know how to make their customers feel happy to be there. Flint Owl is sadly no longer one of these.

Lovely food and cafe but tepid coffee! It's taken me a while to give up on Flint Owl Bakery as the food and bread are great. Stopped for coffee & cake. Delicious on all levels. Came away with an enormous sourdough loaf of which half is in the freezer. A true artisan bakery/cafe. On the face of it this looked to be a sound choice. The food was excellent and the indoor and courtyard spaces were lovely. However these positive attributes paled into insignificance due to the incompetent handling of a customer service issue . One member of staff was beyond reproach and no one appeared to be in-charge to resolve the problem satisfactorily. If you are seeking out quality, welcoming artisan cafes I would give this one a wide berth.

Flint Owl is by far the best cafe in Lewes. The food and drinks are always excellent and the service from the young girls behind the counter is always efficient and they are very pleasant. However I am leaving this review because I visited before Christmas and one particular staff member was SHOUTING in the middle of the shop about people paying for their bread!? It seems so unnecessary in such a small space. I swiftly left that day as just grabbing a quick bite to eat became stressful. I visited again last week to be faced with the same staff member yet again SHOUTING about orders at the top of her lungs. She really ruins the atmosphere. It’s such a shame because what was once a really chilled and inviting space, has now been totally tainted by her hollering like she’s flogging stolen goods at a boot sale. The town crier better watch his back!

Visiting Lewes for the weekend. Absolutely lovely town. Flint Owl Bakery one to avoid. The service is shocking. A group of surly young ladies behind the counter doing their best to avoid and ignore customers. Floor dirty. Tables uncleared. The one that had been cleared dirty. Tables packed in too close in a post covid world. Mediocre tepid coffee. Large open rack of bread by the door. Uncovered. Badly stacked. Watched people's clothes brush against it and move it. People queuing next to it. Not nice at all. There was also a customer with a wild smelly dog. Not their fault on that one. I love dogs, but this is not a dog friendly space as so cramped. Anyone with an allergy or a fear had no hope of keeping a distance today. A massive clean and a lot of staff training needed.

Fabulous sour dough breads !! Was keen to come here to sample the breads- the 100% rye sourdough is amazing. The almond croissants delish as well. Haven’t tried the other breads…. yet ! Came in yesterday to get coffees etc - it was disappointingly Luke warm and my husband didn’t appreciate the tiny teacup he could barely even pick up with tiny handles. So we felt they could improve on the drink service. In future I’d probably just buy the bread.

We visited today and asked about vegan options, of which there are quite a few. Unfortunately I also don’t eat bananas as they don’t agree with me, but the staff could not confirm if all the vegan options were banana free. A couple were labelled, but for the matcha cake and choc chip cookie it was not clear. This is so disappointing as many places now have ingredient lists, even if food is made offsite or by another company. Please could you consider doing this in future? Thank you.

So bad infact we couldn't drink them & asked for a refund which we got and the lady was nice & explained that there was a problem with the coffee machine..... Why still sell coffee then, especially when it's £2.50 a cup! Personally i think charging extra for milk is strange, never seen this in any other cofffee shop. When i asked for soya milk for one of them i got told i had to pay extra for diary free milk.... even though i had already paid extra for milk and i was only having an Americano. Baffling & very very annoying! Won't be going back.

Nice food, if pricey, but each time we visit the staff look as if they’d rather be somewhere else. The service is consistently sub-standard. Today, the table was left with the previous occupants’ used crockery; we had to ask for it to be cleared, and then again for it to be wiped down. This happened the last time we visited. Sullen, bored and brisk staff don’t help the ambience. But there’s so little competition in Lewes I wonder if the owner actually cares.

Just to note I asked that a slice rather than tongs be used to avoid squashing my cake and the staff seemed to take this as an insult. Also went in the shop another time at 3.30pm and wondered if closing as staff just stood there waiting for me to chose when I'd only just got in the shop.there was a definite air of impatience. The best bakery on any of four continents I've been to, and there are many great ones. What always turns me on to food is fresh and real ingredients. Here they have a good variety of breads and pastries. Great value because the portions are large, great flavours as the pastries etc. are perfectly sweetened, and there are "free from" options. A main street - easy to find - some street parking close by, staff are adhering to Covid restrictions, busy location but service is very quick, and some seating inside. Fresh, tasty and I would move to Lewes just for this place alone.
