Robson's of Lewes is coffee shop/cafe situated in the heart of Lewes. I visited with a group of friends, who were looking for somewhere to have some food before exploring Lewes. Robson's was the ideal spot and I would recommend it to anyone visiting the picturesque town. Prior to our visit I emailed the owner, Mark, to ask if we could make a reservation. Mark replied quickly and stated that although the cafe does not take reservations he would be more than happy to accommodate us. During our visit, Mark was a very welcoming and attentive host, offering excellent service. Considering we were a larger group, the food arrived within 15/20 minutes and was delicious - Robson's clearly use good produce and prepare it with TLC. I would go as far to say that it was one of the nicest 'full english breakfasts' I've had out in a while. The menu offers a range of items and Mark was flexible to any individual requests. Thanks Robson's - we hope to visit again!

Shopping with my mother in law we decided to stop for lunch. The seating area is in the back of the building so you’re hidden from passers by which I like when eating. The staff were very polite and friendly, very attentive to my mother in law and didn’t mind the mess she made. Her illness means she’s not always tidy with her food. The food was excellent, 2 soup and a jacket potato. Well presented. And the cake to follow, well it really is home made by the lady Skye, and it is fabulous! Visiting Lewes? Then forget the run of the mill coffee shops, don’t miss this!

We called in for a late lunch and were pleasantly surprised. We ordered a brie toastie and a sausage toastie on granary bread which we then shared. Nice sausages, lovely melted brie which was carefully toasted and served with a salad garnish. Mustard from a jar served with a spoon, not a squeeze bottle which was a refreshing change. Service was good, no delays despite being busy, tables were regularly cleaned. Good value for money too. Would recommend unreservedly.

The full English breakfast was delicious but that is where it stopped... The female waiter servicing us purposefully ignored us and other customers and talked loudly about how she didn't want to serve us.. it became so bad that other customers walked out. We perceived, regrettably. She spent the entire time complaining right behind me about all the customers including us (we asked politely for ketchup). She continued talking to the other staff about her dislike of the customers as loudly as she could. The other customers all smiled sympathetically at each other as our meals became very awkward. When it came to pay she continued her rant to other staff as we waited patiently. One of the worst customer service experiences we have had in a restaurant. I understand dealing with the public can be trying at times but all the customers were very polite and she ruined what was a lovely meal for everyone.

Busy Sunday in Lewes but we found the the Cafe, light, airy and peaceful. The food has always been good, and on this visit I just had soup with sourdough toast. The soup was good but the toast looked exactly like white sliced loaf. I queried this with the young man serving us, and he said 'no it is sourdough', the well known baker they say supplies them would, I think, be horrified. It was clearly NOT sourdough, nor even a nice rustic bread. As it was quite quiet it took a little time for menus to arrive. The service was friendly and efficient. A jug of water would be nice rather than just a glass of tap water at a time. I would go back again, but agree that the young staff did look like they were rather bored with the whole thing. I would go back again however, a little oasis of calm and good food at a reasonable price.

Have to agree with an earlier review - it's gone downhill. Location - lovely, food - tasty, ambience - very nice... service - appalling, and I do mean utterly abysmal. I'm told that when the boss is there it's faultless, which I'm prepared to believe because I've experienced their lunch platters at a corporate event. But when you leave a place in the hands of inexperienced, hapless teens you end up with a bad reputation. I will go back, but only if I see Mr Robson there through the window.

It’s a charming bright room at the back of the shop, not very far up School Hill, with a bay window which on our visit at 9.00am had sunlight streaming through. Richard is vegetarian & often has the full veggie experience but today he was on a diet & ordered scrambled eggs on toast with tea (£5.95). Chris, as is his wont, had the full meaty English with decaff coffee (£9.25). Richard declared the scrambled eggs to be good, although a bit tasteless but thought this wasn't a fair critique as he has his own hens and their eggs almost explode with flavour. He also thought the scrambled eggs could have been a tad looser in texture but was impressed by the generosity of the portion.... So much for his diet. The excellent sourdough toast was, we think, from Flint Owl Bakery across the road. Chris’s full English was very good indeed; proper meaty butcher’s sausages, nicely fried egg, bacon a bit leathery but a good flavour; fried potatoes which is a nice & unusual touch – I suspect they’re sliced from left over baked potatoes but none the worse for that. A good plateful & well presented. We thought the meals were remarkably good value for money. Time was, not too long ago, when £9.25 for a full English would have seemed dear but since inflation has taken its icy grip, anything under £10 feels cheap. Our bill for an extra coffee & a tip came to £24.65. The service too was charming, friendly & efficient; can’t ask more than that. All in all, a definite 5* for Robson’s.

Invited a long lost friend to lunch today. Two other people in the whole place. Waitress said it’s been quiet all day. We ordered soup and a toasted cheese sandwich, water and a soft drink. We waited 40 minutes. Just about to walk out when the soup arrived stone cold, and the sandwich had no melted cheese in it. Just cold grated. Soup went back to be reheated. The place was very Smokey and made our clothes smell. We were offered free cake in recompense. We ordered two teas and two slices of cake. Both cakes were bone dry. Waitress went home. Our free cake turned out to be free tea, so we got two pots of free hot water. Thanks! By this point I was so embarrassed I just paid and we left. Goodness knows what the service would be like if you happened to be busy. Awful, and to the owner I’ve been seeing here for years, please cheer up when you wander about the place 🙄

Pretty tearoom, luckily for them there doesn't seem to be any other tearooms around. Terrible tea and coffee, we had to ask for milk. My sandwich was all salad and very little egg, I didn't ask for salad. We had to ask for cutlery and serviettes. I always try and be positive but the scones were tasteless with a tiny spoon of cheap jam, there's just nothing to be positive about. What an awful birthday lunch. We didn't complain, but neither were we asked if we were happy. If you don't want customers at the end of the day you'd honestly be better turning them away then leaving such a bad impression.

This is a lovely facility in a lovely Sussex town. We stumbled across the venue on a cold January weekday lunchtime, looking for a nice lunch and a warm up!The place looks tidy and modern from the outside, and was warm and cosy inside. It was busy which is testament to the popularity of the venue. We were directed to the rear seating area and found a table for two. Yes, it was a little squashed in (we were only a matter of 2 feet or so from the adjoining table) but this was fine. We ordered two lattes and my wife a jacket potato and me a Weish Rarebit. The service was relatively quick and the coffee decently hot and pleasant. The food was delicious. There appeared to be a downstairs seating area. The only negative? The male toilet was a little tired. A timely redecoration is necessary to make it perfect. We enjoyed it though.

My Daughter and I very pleased with our Afternoon Tea at Robson's.As Vegetarians, we are used to being offered cheese and cucumber or egg sandwiches. We were absolutely delighted with the sandwich selection, which was, cheese and mango chutney, brie and cranberry and roasted vegetable and hummus. They were delicious as were the warm scones and homemade cake.I have informed other family members, who will now be taking a trip to Lewes for Robson's afternoon tea!

This tea shop could be great,it really has the potential to be. The surroundings are nice, the view from the rear facing room at the back is lovely, there’s a large bay window overlooking the garden. The staff were friendly enough,it appeared clean and there was nothing wrong with the service. So,you must be thinking, what’s the problem? The problem was the tea and cake! We expected to be offered different varieties of tea;Darjeeling,Assam,Ceylon etc but instead had an individual stainless steel teapot placed in front of each of us with a bog standard teabag floating in it,hust as you would get in a supermarket cafe. Next the cake.....I have never been served such a sorry excuse for a piece of cake in all my life, the slice was minuscule and was served with a squirt of hut spray cream from a can. We will not be going back.

I had a delicious half-tea (for one) at Robson's. The scones were really very good, and the atmosphere charming. It was too chilly to sit in the lovely garden so I stayed in the main dining area. My only complaint: the table top seemed sticky, so I asked the waitress to wipe it again. She said it was the varnish that made it so. Possibly consider redoing the table tops?

If you are only two people then outside at the back is a nice place to sit. Ordered two coffees and some cakes/tea cakes. Food and service were good but the coffees were awful, so bitter and so hot that I couldn’t even take a sip for ten minutes, ended up leaving the whole cup. Would return for a snack and to try the milkshakes but definitely not a coffee!

We had lunch which was nice not a great selection for gluten free it was either jacket potatoes or salad. I had the smoked salmon and prawn salad, the salad was nice a fresh. My husband and stepson both had a steak & onion ciabatta which looked very nice. I had lemon drizzle cake which was gluten free with a cuppa tea for dessert. My husband had a chocolate sundae and my stepson had a crispy chocolate and caramel slice. The milk shakes were very nice if not a bit expensive for what they were but enjoyable. There isn't much space between tables and not easy for people or staff to get around. There is seating upstairs but I don't know what that is like and there are a few tables in the back yard which I think they may call the garden. It was nice but a bit expensive I would use them again the quality of the food was good

I waited around 20 minutes for a table on a bank holiday weekend afternoon and chose the 'half' afternoon tea ( fruit scone, jam, clotted cream, tea). It took a while for the waitresses to realise I was waiting to order as the table I was sat at was full of dirty crockery left from the previous diners - this could have been easily managed if the person seating those in the queue then directed the clearing of tables or taking orders. My order arrived quickly enough but fell into the average afternoon tea category. On the plus side there was real clotted cream but on the negative side the two scones had become soft when warmed - hopefully not an indication that the scones had been defrosted. The jam and cream were both in plastic packaging which added to the cafe effect, this is not a classy afternoon tea treatment.Good points:+ Inexpensive and you do get clotted cream with the afternoon tea+ Attractive small garden area to the rearNot so good points:- The basics of seating diners, clearing tables and taking orders need work- The overly soft warmed scones fell apart rather easily- The ground floor dining area is quite congested and would benefit from the removal of two tables- The basement toilets are down a narrow steep stair

My father sister and I visited robsons for a quick lunch, my coffee took half an hour to arrive, the food took at least 40 minutes considering it was a panini, a baguette and a quiche I thought this was appalling, they also got my order wrong as I asked for cheddar and tomato chutney baguette it came as just a cheddar and sliced tomato baguette so I asked for chutney and they only had mango or apricot to offer, the tables were sticky and considering the portions and service I would argue it's over priced, additionally the chairs were really uncomfortable, in conclusion generally chaotic.

We enjoyed our lunch - tuna jacket potato and lamb in flatbread. Absolutely fine but not wow! It was busy so had a short wait but that was not an issue. It is not a huge place. They do try to get people in ASAP. Best to sit upstairs if you can. Good cakes on show but we did not try any.

Visited on a wet day. Busy and atmospheric upstairs. No free tables so we were shown to a table downstairs. Could have been a completely different cafe. No atmosphere no buzz of a coffee shop more like a library. Food was also disappointing. Mushrooms with cheese, breadcrumbs, roasted peppers and salad. No breadcrumbs and the roasted peppers were not roasted. Macaroni cheese had a good flavour but was grey in colour. If the order had been correct it would have been great value.

Had a delightful morning coffee at Robson's in Lewes. Even went as far as having a warm scone with a tasty conserve.

Quality food. Very reasonably priced. Good service. I recommend the Welsh rarebit in particular. One small constructive criticism: the cakes are a little disappointing; could do with more variety- fresh cream cake and would be nice.

Another very good little independent business in Lewes. We cropped in for a 'light' lunch (Welsh Rarebit) which turned out to be quite substantial with very tasty cheese sauce on a large toasted panini with fresh salad. Very tasty, and good coffee, too. I would recommend this cafe.
