Had a couple of ciders at the bar and asked about food. We were told that there was no menu and to look at the board. Each time we asked we were told the kitchen was open at 6. At 6 we asked for the menu we were asked if we had booked a table because they were quite booked up. The older woman that was behind the bar was quite abrupt and unhelpful. I wouldn’t recommend. Unless you want a miserable barmaid who doesn’t like making cocktails or giving helpful recommendations.

1 but really 0. Turned up at 5, asked if I could bring my dog in and was told yes. sat at a table picked menu up from that was on the table and went to bar to order food. To be told, bluntly that the kitchen didn’t open till 6. We decided to stay as it was a chilly evening. At 3 mins to six i went bk to the bar ordered more soft drinks and food. To be told the kitchen wasn’t open but I suppose they could pre order it! Not a smile in site. Returned to our corner table. As another member of staff placed something on out table and walked away. It was a sign that said reserved at 7. Nothing was said to us. We commented to one another it was rude. Meanwhile two other dogs had entered separately and were yapping at each other. For the most part mine ignored this. We started talking to the couple next to us who were in a day trip. Who even made a fuss of my dog. The dogs started again and this time my dog yapped, once. Then as I was telling him off a man came marching into the bar, red faced and angry. Shouting at me. “This bar is for humans not just dogs”. I stated it hadn’t been my dog barking. He shouted bk stating he had been upstairs and could hear him. I stated it hadn’t been my dog. He said it had been, he could hear him. And marched away. I can assure you if it had of been mine I would have apologised. The people next to us stated how incredibly rude the manager had been. We got up and left. I didn’t pay for my food as it hadn’t arrived, nor the drinks as we hadn’t touched them. I felt extremely intimidated and uncomfortable. I won’t be returning, ever. You cannot shout at people like that. In front of other people too. I wasn’t rude or aggressive to any of you. It was not acceptable.

We stopped off in Horncastle on our way home for some lunch. Being a Sunday the town was mainly shut. Looking for food the menu outside looked great so we gave it a try. After we found the access through the archway it opened into a pretty courtyard. We entered the Bull and asked if they were serving food. We were told yes but was moaned at because we had not booked in advance (we were passing through so obviously couldn't) to which we said that being tourists we wanted to see what was available. We were served by a grumpy blonde lass who didn't want to be there and served me a coke in a dirty glass with hair stuck to it. When I asked for a clean glass she swiped it away with no word or apologies and got me a fresh one. We took our drinks outside and a menu but decided after the frosty reception and attitude we would eat elsewhere. We would not be returning again.

We were staying nearby and popped in here a few times, twice just for drinks and once for food. Really liked the place. Very traditional pub, down to earth, nothing fancy, no gimmicks, just people having a chat and a pint and maybe a bite to eat. When we ate here the food was good quality (great Hunter's chicken), VFM and plenty of it. Service prompt and friendly too.

Ate at the restaurant as part of birthday celebrations as our previous booking let us down. The Bull Hotel were very accommodating at short notice and, having not ate there previously, we weren't sure what to expect. While the table was a little crampt for a party of 11, we were very pleasantly surprised. A relatively small choice on the menu but all to the parties tastes. The steaks were cooked well and the quality of food was very good. I opted for the belly pork cutlets, very tasty but a little overcooked and had food envy if those that ordered the steak. Waiting staff and kitchen staff were very friendly and couldn't have been more helpful through the evening.

I feel compelled to write a review as a family who made a a VERY last minute booking. We were accommodated incredibly well and not only that, as the only family with kids in the place at the time & eating in the bar/lounge area, rather than being rushed or shushed, we were treated impeccably. The children were made to feel welcome, the food was brilliant - really tasty and really well priced, great choice of beers & ale's and the Ice-Cream treat for the girls afterwards was lovely. Thanks for making a last minute dinner feel so great!

Booked & stayed at this place very recently having read the excellent reviews. As a very level-headed person, certainly not delusional I failed in trying to recognise or match the place based on any of the reviews posted on Booking.com The place, whilst very quaint & appealing from the outside is in direct contrast to the inside! In reality, it's very much in dire need of deep cleaning, redecorating and refurbishing. The food, not sure who prepared the meals in the reviews I read, but fail to see how it could be the same chef as the one that cooked ours! Our meals arrived no less than 40 minutes after ordering. The drinks to occupy us while we waited never did arrive & when our meals finally arrived & served (if slapping on the table warrants being called "served") three out of the five items that made up the meal were uncooked, cold & unedible! The excuse given by the waitress, is far too busy and understaffed, yet despite not being able to fulfil the job paid for, they still take fee-paying guests who are treated far less than second-class citizens to the regular clientele supping at the bar! Far too busy - but not enough to stop them from taking longer than necessary to laugh & talking to the regulars! Needless to say, we ate at other places for the rest of our stay. DO NOT BE FOOLED, as we were by the reviews, which have stayed are extremely questionable indeed! If one is used to using hostels I can see this could be deemed as good, if not excellent accommodation. On the flip side, if one is used to hotels that are clean & customer focused then this hotel (a grand name for nothing more than a public house with accommodation & not a very good or pleasant one at that ) is not the one for you!!

Stayed here for one night alone as I fancied a break. As soon as I walked in I got chatting to the locals. Very friendly place. Room was lovely, warm, clean and definitely adequate. Great management and staff, homely friendly atmosphere. Breakfast was superb. Free no hassle parking too but if unfamiliar can at first be hard to access. Basically access from road at back of Bull ring. Definitely will be returning Great value too

We went for the Sunday carvery. As a vegan, I usually ring the restaurant personally prior to booking to check if they can cater for my requirements. I spoke to the chef who came across as very friendly and helpful. He assured me he would be able to fix something up for me. He did not disappoint. On the day, he made a dish perfectly suited to my dietary preferences. He even explained the recipe and gave me a complimentary bottle of vegan relish to flavour my own meals. He also made a dessert and sauce especially for me and again explained how he did it. I would give the chef 5 stars because he went the extra mile for me. He made an effort and nothing was too much trouble. You don't come across that level of dedication too often. I have only given an overall score of 3 stars because of the level of cleanliness which could be improved upon i.e. a few cobwebs, a dead spider in the toilet, some visable dust and some flaking paint on the walls. There were plenty of people in the bar when we left providing a pleasant atmosphere. I would be happy to visit this restaurant again.

I've been in Horncastle on business twice - once on a Monday, once on a Tuesday - and both times found the town mostly closed for business in the evenings. This time, just as I was on the point of deciding people in Lincolnshire must have a tradition of fasting on a Tuesday evening, I came across The Bull. This attractive old coaching hotel looked inviting, and the staff offered me a friendly welcome. The warmly lit, high-ceilinged interior of this Georgian inn was full of diners (Yes - on a Tuesday! Take note, other restauranteurs of Horncastle) and the ambiance was convivial. The selection of beers behind the bar was good and the two pints I drank were tasty and well kept. I was presented with two bar menus, a separate burger menu and shown a fish menu and a steak menu on the wall. (I understand tapas is also available at weekends). Quite a choice! The bar menus largely consisted of what you might call traditional pub grub of the best kind. Within that massive choice, there must have been at least half a dozen dishes I was really tempted by but, eventually, I plumped for the cauliflower soup followed by the pork belly, mash, peas and apple gravy. Both courses were outstanding and extremely generous in size, especially the pork belly. My only disappointment was that I hadn't room in my distended belly to squeeze in a spotted dick for pudding! My bill, for such a large and excellent meal, was very modest. All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed my dinner at The Bull and would definitely eat and/or drink there again.

My husband and I visited the pub twice during our week away in the area. A nice friendly pub with plenty of space and obviously used by locals. Good beer. Definitely worth a visit.

What a little gem. A true old fashioned English pub in Horncastle. In need of a bite to eat my partner and myself chanced on this pub over the jubilee celebrations weekend. A very warm welcome by the landlord who ensured we were made comfortable and sat us at a table. A varied menu in which I chose the very tasty crispy pork belly rashers with mash. It really is so nice to have homemade fayre rather than the chain food as at other establishments. Plenty of choice of beers, lagers etc with excellent and pleasant service by the waiting staff. I Would certainly visit again and recommend a this traditional English pub to anyone passing.

Travelling on a dark wet wintry night in late December deep in Lincolnshire we were in need of repast. Despite Horncastle having many pubs and eateries not much was open and serving save for The Bull. To that extent we could say we did not have a choice. At first we were told that "The Kitchen was not open yet", but we then realised that it was not long until it opened so we had a drink from the bar while waiting. Strange that the staff did not suggest that themselves rather than shoo us away. Perhaps it was because every table bar one was labelled "Reserved" and empty and they were expecting a rush of locals or perhaps it was some extreme social distancing measure; who knows. There were a surprising number of menus available: Fish menu; Steak menu; burger menu, Tapas menu and menu menu, It can be considered a warning sign when the menu is too large, because quality can be compromised and it is often better to offer less choice with greater quality. In this case it worked to our advantage as our various dietary requirements could be catered for from different menus. More dietary information on the menus would have been an improvement, but staff were helpful. We tried burgers, fish and tapas dishes and all were fine. The gluten free options were catered for with no issue. We would eat here again should we be in the area.

We ate here on a Monday evening when it was one of the very few places in Horncastle serving food. Maybe we caught them on a bad night, they were understaffed and had some kitchen problems, but the two pints I had were both substandard and the meals were below average; my tasteless Lincolnshire sausage and lumpy mash was very poor indeed.

There was an excellent choice of meat, fish and veg options on the Tapas menu, as well as some main fish dishes on the board. The food was quickly served. It was ok food, perfectly editable and adequate but it seemed that it was frozen and 're heated which was easy to tell. This was a shame as tapas really should all be freshly done. Not happy with there service as they close at 1:00am the owner or bartender rejected us from coming in as a drunk guy was hanging around outside. Now I’m from London and this would never happen especially the way I was spoken to at the gate! So I decided to phone and got a rude response! All I asked why they where closed? Then I got a phone call back as the guy whom i was speaking with before hung up, I then got a very rude conversation with the owner! saying that this isn’t London saying I don’t care what your rules are in london and that he doesn’t care about my opinion! Was utter rude. He said you can stick London up your ass this is Lincolnshire! I said I wanted to spend my money and he said that I don’t want your money. Just to mention I have only had one drink and would never cause a issue. I just can’t believe I was spoken to like that! I would never use this place due to their lack of customer service. We thought we would try the Tapas menu as such a good tasty sounding choice. However the meatballs were black and the nacho's were very burned around the tops so much so that the waiter apologized how they were burnt but still left them for us to eat. Then the Moroccan Chicken came out and the waited commented that it had extras when I asked what he meant he answered there was a hair which he then picked off and wiped up his trousers but left that dish also. Although the food was bad and we won't be back it was a shame as the staff were very friendly and chatty but you are paying for the food.

Never been here before and thought that it was an unusual place to hold a Wedding Reception, but I was so wrong, we had a great time with Good Mates, nice service, good food and a nice selection of drinks! The music was also very entertaining and it was a lovely, old fashioned Pub atmosphere!

After just moving to Horncastle we've been sampling a few places to find our new 'local' and after popping in here for some food and a few beers, i think we've found it! Fantastic steak and ale pie with beautiful hand-cut chips as well as a good selection of well-kept beers along with friendly welcoming staff and locals. Looking forward to trying the Tapas at some point too!

I stayed here and the Tapas selection was wonderful. What was even more surprising was the lady behind the bar talking me through the Tapas process - she was so professional and really knew her stuff!

Been coming to the Bull for nearly four years and the food has been consistently great. We love the steak nights, had great seafood here and now varied and beautifully cooked tapas. It is very reasonably priced and the newly refurbished pub and restaurant makes it a must.

We like to pop in here for a drink on a weekend. There is usually a good crowd in on a Friday night, even through the gloomy winter months. The beer is reasonably priced and they do food as well. Tapas seems to be their speciality. We are made to feel welcome and on one occasion when we went in during a heavy rain shower, I was offered a towel to dry off, which was much appreciated.

Having walked 7 miles along the Spa Trail/Viking Way we had worked up an appetite by the time we got to Horncastle. We called in on spec at the Bull for lunch, it was good value, good choice of beef, pork and lamb and a lovely selection of potatoes and veggies. We couldn't manage the rhubarb crumble but it looked good too! would go back again if in the area.

From first enquiring about dog friendliness and table reservation we couldn't fault the help and friendliness given to us and our parents. Food was wholesome, hot and good value for money, all very attentive and would return.

Booked a large group (14, including 3 children) for a Sunday lunch together. Carvery was very good - choice of meat as expected, beef cooked to suit everyone's tastes too. Good range of veg and the usual trappings of a good traditional Sunday lunch. Food was hot, gravy was excellent and staff were friendly, attentive but not over-bearing. No request seemed too much trouble, and children were especially well looked after.

This our second visit to The Bull to eat. The first time we stayed in the bar and had a lovely meal from the daily choice menu. This time we were booked in for the Carvery. Their was a choice of Lamb, Pork or Beef. Two of us had the Lamb and was served with lots of it and then chose from lots of different veg including beautifully cooked new potatoes and super roast potatoes, and a lovely gravy. My husband had the abeef and again served with lots of it, the other member of our party actually wanted a bit of the rarer beef and the longer cooked beef but she actually got a choice of all the meats! We loved the meal. The deserts were delicious too, a chocolate confection with vanilla ice cream which went down well, I had Raspberry and Rhubarb crunch with ice cream and it was really nice. The only slight annoyance was the waitress forgot to bring one desert out and it took a while to get any attention from the very busy staff. They did apologise profusely! Settled in the bar for coffees and soft drinks. Very enjoyable lunch at a reasonable price. Very friendly staff and owner.

Door propped wide open in December. Don't like it? Leave. (Spoilers: everybody in the front half of the café did leave.) Credit where it's due, the coffee is fine. But when you pay nearly £5 for a coffee you expect to sit in comfort and warmth for a bit. We questioned why the door was propped wide open in winter and said it was too cold, and rather than an apology or middle ground solution, was basically argued with and told why we were wrong and nothing could be done about it. (A faulty aircon system? Sounds like a Nero problem, not a customer problem, but what do I know.) Disappointing standard but more disappointed by the stand-offish "actually no" attitude of the staff member.
