Had a tapas this evening, not had one before but the landlord explained the menu, which dishes went together, the quantities, very very helpful. And wow, we really enjoyed it, the food was very tasty and plenty of it

Ate at the restaurant as part of birthday celebrations as our previous booking let us down. The Bull Hotel were very accommodating at short notice and, having not ate there previously, we weren't sure what to expect. While the table was a little crampt for a party of 11, we were very pleasantly surprised. A relatively small choice on the menu but all to the parties tastes. The steaks were cooked well and the quality of food was very good. I opted for the belly pork cutlets, very tasty but a little overcooked and had food envy if those that ordered the steak. Waiting staff and kitchen staff were very friendly and couldn't have been more helpful through the evening.

I feel compelled to write a review as a family who made a a VERY last minute booking. We were accommodated incredibly well and not only that, as the only family with kids in the place at the time & eating in the bar/lounge area, rather than being rushed or shushed, we were treated impeccably. The children were made to feel welcome, the food was brilliant - really tasty and really well priced, great choice of beers & ale's and the Ice-Cream treat for the girls afterwards was lovely. Thanks for making a last minute dinner feel so great!

Booked & stayed at this place very recently having read the excellent reviews. As a very level-headed person, certainly not delusional I failed in trying to recognise or match the place based on any of the reviews posted on Booking.com The place, whilst very quaint & appealing from the outside is in direct contrast to the inside! In reality, it's very much in dire need of deep cleaning, redecorating and refurbishing. The food, not sure who prepared the meals in the reviews I read, but fail to see how it could be the same chef as the one that cooked ours! Our meals arrived no less than 40 minutes after ordering. The drinks to occupy us while we waited never did arrive & when our meals finally arrived & served (if slapping on the table warrants being called "served") three out of the five items that made up the meal were uncooked, cold & unedible! The excuse given by the waitress, is far too busy and understaffed, yet despite not being able to fulfil the job paid for, they still take fee-paying guests who are treated far less than second-class citizens to the regular clientele supping at the bar! Far too busy - but not enough to stop them from taking longer than necessary to laugh & talking to the regulars! Needless to say, we ate at other places for the rest of our stay. DO NOT BE FOOLED, as we were by the reviews, which have stayed are extremely questionable indeed! If one is used to using hostels I can see this could be deemed as good, if not excellent accommodation. On the flip side, if one is used to hotels that are clean & customer focused then this hotel (a grand name for nothing more than a public house with accommodation & not a very good or pleasant one at that ) is not the one for you!!

Stayed here for one night alone as I fancied a break. As soon as I walked in I got chatting to the locals. Very friendly place. Room was lovely, warm, clean and definitely adequate. Great management and staff, homely friendly atmosphere. Breakfast was superb. Free no hassle parking too but if unfamiliar can at first be hard to access. Basically access from road at back of Bull ring. Definitely will be returning Great value too

We went for the Sunday carvery. As a vegan, I usually ring the restaurant personally prior to booking to check if they can cater for my requirements. I spoke to the chef who came across as very friendly and helpful. He assured me he would be able to fix something up for me. He did not disappoint. On the day, he made a dish perfectly suited to my dietary preferences. He even explained the recipe and gave me a complimentary bottle of vegan relish to flavour my own meals. He also made a dessert and sauce especially for me and again explained how he did it. I would give the chef 5 stars because he went the extra mile for me. He made an effort and nothing was too much trouble. You don't come across that level of dedication too often. I have only given an overall score of 3 stars because of the level of cleanliness which could be improved upon i.e. a few cobwebs, a dead spider in the toilet, some visable dust and some flaking paint on the walls. There were plenty of people in the bar when we left providing a pleasant atmosphere. I would be happy to visit this restaurant again.

I've been in Horncastle on business twice - once on a Monday, once on a Tuesday - and both times found the town mostly closed for business in the evenings. This time, just as I was on the point of deciding people in Lincolnshire must have a tradition of fasting on a Tuesday evening, I came across The Bull. This attractive old coaching hotel looked inviting, and the staff offered me a friendly welcome. The warmly lit, high-ceilinged interior of this Georgian inn was full of diners (Yes - on a Tuesday! Take note, other restauranteurs of Horncastle) and the ambiance was convivial. The selection of beers behind the bar was good and the two pints I drank were tasty and well kept. I was presented with two bar menus, a separate burger menu and shown a fish menu and a steak menu on the wall. (I understand tapas is also available at weekends). Quite a choice! The bar menus largely consisted of what you might call traditional pub grub of the best kind. Within that massive choice, there must have been at least half a dozen dishes I was really tempted by but, eventually, I plumped for the cauliflower soup followed by the pork belly, mash, peas and apple gravy. Both courses were outstanding and extremely generous in size, especially the pork belly. My only disappointment was that I hadn't room in my distended belly to squeeze in a spotted dick for pudding! My bill, for such a large and excellent meal, was very modest. All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed my dinner at The Bull and would definitely eat and/or drink there again.

My husband and I visited the pub twice during our week away in the area. A nice friendly pub with plenty of space and obviously used by locals. Good beer. On our second visit we enjoyed lunch - my husband ordered tuna sandwiches and I had the cheese and ham panini both served with a small salad - generous filling in both. Very tasty too. Definitely worth a visit.

What a little gem. A true old fashioned English pub in Horncastle. In need of a bite to eat my partner and myself chanced on this pub over the jubilee celebrations weekend. A very warm welcome by the landlord who ensured we were made comfortable and sat us at a table. A varied menu in which I chose the very tasty crispy pork belly rashers with mash. It really is so nice to have homemade fayre rather than the chain food as at other establishments. Plenty of choice of beers, lagers etc with excellent and pleasant service by the waiting staff. I Would certainly visit again and recommend a this traditional English pub to anyone passing.

Travelling on a dark wet wintry night in late December deep in Lincolnshire we were in need of repast. Despite Horncastle having many pubs and eateries not much was open and serving save for The Bull. To that extent we could say we did not have a choice. At first we were told that "The Kitchen was not open yet", but we then realised that it was not long until it opened so we had a drink from the bar while waiting. Strange that the staff did not suggest that themselves rather than shoo us away. Perhaps it was because every table bar one was labelled "Reserved" and empty and they were expecting a rush of locals or perhaps it was some extreme social distancing measure; who knows. There were a surprising number of menus available: Fish menu; Steak menu; burger menu, Tapas menu and menu menu, It can be considered a warning sign when the menu is too large, because quality can be compromised and it is often better to offer less choice with greater quality. In this case it worked to our advantage as our various dietary requirements could be catered for from different menus. More dietary information on the menus would have been an improvement, but staff were helpful. We tried burgers, fish and tapas dishes and all were fine. The gluten free options were catered for with no issue. We would eat here again should we be in the area.

We ate here on a Monday evening when it was one of the very few places in Horncastle serving food. Maybe we caught them on a bad night, they were understaffed and had some kitchen problems, but the two pints I had were both substandard and the meals were below average; my tasteless Lincolnshire sausage and lumpy mash was very poor indeed.

It was ok food, perfectly editable and adequate but it seemed that it was frozen and 're heated which was easy to tell. This was a shame as tapas really should all be freshly done. Not happy with there service as they close at 1:00am the owner or bartender rejected us from coming in as a drunk guy was hanging around outside. Now I’m from London and this would never happen especially the way I was spoken to at the gate! So I decided to phone and got a rude response! All I asked why they where closed? Then I got a phone call back as the guy whom i was speaking with before hung up, I then got a very rude conversation with the owner! saying that this isn’t London saying I don’t care what your rules are in london and that he doesn’t care about my opinion! Was utter rude. He said you can stick London up your ass this is Lincolnshire! I said I wanted to spend my money and he said that I don’t want your money. Just to mention I have only had one drink and would never cause a issue. I just can’t believe I was spoken to like that! I would never use this place due to their lack of customer service. We thought we would try the Tapas menu as such a good tasty sounding choice. However the meatballs were black and the nacho's were very burned around the tops so much so that the waiter apologized how they were burnt but still left them for us to eat. Then the Moroccan Chicken came out and the waited commented that it had extras when I asked what he meant he answered there was a hair which he then picked off and wiped up his trousers but left that dish also. Although the food was bad and we won't be back it was a shame as the staff were very friendly and chatty but you are paying for the food.

We called in on spec at the Bull for lunch, it was good value, good choice of beef, pork and lamb and a lovely selection of potatoes and veggies. We couldn't manage the rhubarb crumble but it looked good too! would go back again if in the area.

From first enquiring about dog friendliness and table reservation we couldn't fault the help and friendliness given to us and our parents. Food was wholesome, hot and good value for money, all very attentive and would return.

Booked a large group (14, including 3 children) for a Sunday lunch together. Carvery was very good - choice of meat as expected, beef cooked to suit everyone's tastes too. Good range of veg and the usual trappings of a good traditional Sunday lunch. Food was hot, gravy was excellent and staff were friendly, attentive but not over-bearing. No request seemed too much trouble, and children were especially well looked after.

This our second visit to The Bull to eat. The first time we stayed in the bar and had a lovely meal from the daily choice menu. This time we were booked in for the Carvery. Their was a choice of Lamb, Pork or Beef. Two of us had the Lamb and was served with lots of it and then chose from lots of different veg including beautifully cooked new potatoes and super roast potatoes, and a lovely gravy. My husband had the abeef and again served with lots of it, the other member of our party actually wanted a bit of the rarer beef and the longer cooked beef but she actually got a choice of all the meats! We loved the meal. The deserts were delicious too, a chocolate confection with vanilla ice cream which went down well, I had Raspberry and Rhubarb crunch with ice cream and it was really nice. The only slight annoyance was the waitress forgot to bring one desert out and it took a while to get any attention from the very busy staff. They did apologise profusely! Settled in the bar for coffees and soft drinks. Very enjoyable lunch at a reasonable price. Very friendly staff and owner.

We arrived on a very hot Saturday evening in Horncastle looking for somewhere to eat on our journey. The Bull Hotel looked interesting from the start with a part covered outside area and various bars. The staff were immediately welcoming and helpful. I had a Ringwood brewery bitter which was good. We decided to sit in the bar to have our meal but one of the staff suggested that we might be more comfortable in the Tapas room as Rugby was going to be on the TV in the bar and it might be noisy. The Tapas room was really pleasant, comfortable and with themed decoration. It looked out over the part-covered courtyard. While we were there a bride and wedding party arrived which added to the atmosphere. We both ordered the Swordfish, chips and salad which arrived in very good time. The presentation of the food was really lovely and we were not disappointed when we started to eat. The swordfish was cooked to perfection, chips were as good as they get and the salad was so much better than the usual chopped up lettuce and a few bits of tomato. The chef came through and asked us if everything was ok as if he really meant it. We were both delighted by the taste and presentation. An excellent meal and an excellent experience. The Bull Hotel is a great place visit and to eat.

We visited the Bull as a group of 5 were seated in the main restaurant. We had our own little area which we liked. 3 of the group had steaks and 2 of us had food from the Tapas menu. The food was delicious, plentiful and a very reasonable price. The tapas menu included a good vegetarian section. Staff were very friendly and helpful. A lovely place, would definitely return.

Three of us ordered baguettes from the lunch menu which were served with a Greek side salad and had some interesting fillings such as Brie, bacon and cranberry. Service was quite slow. The portions are average size and the bread is warm and fresh. With two soft drinks and a small lager the price was over £21.00 which is not overly expensive but not particularly cheap either. This pub seems popular with the locals and looks to have a fairly extensive menu and specials in the evenings.

We take a minibus of people to Horncastle once a month, and whilst they enjoy a social, we eat at the Bull. We have enjoyed their tapas twice, and the standard bar food fare is reliable, weLL Presented, quickly served and popular. Very reasonable pricing, good beer and whilSt it might not be fine dining, it's certainly reliable dining, and there is much to be said for that.

Good variety of dishes, but not enough for my fussy 8 year old who wanted a cheese panini which they produced without any complaint. The menu was a tasty selection and we received a very warm welcome, we enjoyed the meal immensely. Would recommend it and will come again.
