Been past this place for 30 years and never been in so decided to try it for a drink on a sunny afternoon. First impressions Seating outside not great and frontage needs a good sweep and lick of paint. It’s a great location so show it to all the potential passing trade. Flower it up. Advertised German food but not serving due to a pre booked walking party. Inside was confused. Bar had food snacks and stuff all over it. After four minutes after entering a man appeared and was quite sarcastic when my wife asked for tomato juice. Beer was tasty and good pint. Bar Rooms needs clear out and a defined purpose Another elderly couple arrived and left soon stating they had been given a menu then told no food. We will not visiting again due to the man, state of rooms and confused identity of place. Was it a coffee place. German food. Bar or bed and breakfast. A real shame as it has real potential but plug German food and beer but have it to serve but be welcoming to everyone and honest.

A second visit and this time we brought friends! Stayed 2 nights enjoyed evening meals, coffee cake and breakfast! Starters - recommend the Hamburg Herring salad, Homemade soup & Pan Fried Goats cheese salad. Mains - Goulash amazing, Hunters Schnizel wonderful, steak cooked to perfection, beautiful venison loin, huge burgers. There were vegetarian and vegan options which we would try too next time. We simply didn’t have room for pudding if they are like the mains they will be fabulous! We did enjoy a tray bake whilst walking. We also had breakfast home made porridge - approved of by a Scot! Fabulous cooked breakfast. Wonderful American pancakes with fresh fruit salad Greek yoghurt! I’m Anaphylactic and Wolfgang is brilliant with these needs. He believes in home grown or locally sourced produce and cooking from scratch - fantastic! Such a friendly interesting man! Needless to say our friends will be back! Can’t wait to return and recommend again!

We stayed here on the carpark for two nights in our motorhome. On the first evening we enjoyed sampling the variety of German beers. It’s dog friendly here too! On the Saturday morning we were booked in for a full English breakfast the quality was great. We purchased some water & home baked tray bakes for our walk. There are endless walks from Chop Gate and at this time of year some are very muddy. We’d recommend walking poles! We couldn’t get a phone signal so the WiFi was useful and our OS map. After our hike we sat outside for a drink and came back later for our evening meal. Wolfgang makes everything and it’s all top quality. The Goulash was amazing and the Hunters Schnitzel! Schpaezle was also great. Even the chips and salad! Unfortunately we were too full for dessert! This place is also popular with locals, cyclists, ramblers and bikers! It was spotless, the hospitality great we will be back and will be recommending to friends and family!

Visited The Buck Inn following a lovely long walk around North York Moor surrounding Chop Gate. Being rather thirsty and thinking a local pub might be grateful of some business following the covid restrictions, my partner and I decided to drop in for a drink. We were met by a lot of covid non sense demanding mask wearing etc, despite the fact all this ended in July and it is now choice, not law. Posters everywhere and a big Perspex screen across the bar. Not very inviting. However, we respected the wishes on this occasion and obliged in mask wearing. Drinks were ordered and an enquiry made about food which we were rudely told “Don’t serve food till 5:30 pal”. Another couple came in and immediately told to don a mask. They then did this but the bar man couldn’t tell what they were saying. Hmmmmmm. Not overly impressed by the way he spoke to other customers.Due to the pandemic I rarely carry cash anymore as it’s become an unwanted tender. But surprise surprise, it’s a minimum of £10 payment on card. So with no desserts available until 5:30, we ordered coffee to get to the £10.My partner was rudely told again that these couldn’t be take out and that there was no chance of a mocha, despite it being on the menu! I begrudgingly paid the barman and left.A shame this visit didn’t go well as I’ve heard the food was very nice, but if walking in the area I suggest people do themselves a favour and just get back in your car and find somewhere else for a drink and/or meal.No doubt ‘Helen B’ will be along shortly to tear this review to shreds as, from looking at other reviews, she cannot handle criticism.

Great German hot dogs and beer!10 year old son and I popped in after having had a decent circular walk from chop gate over cold moor, wainstones and Urra moor. Cloudy damp day and despite our being the only guests on a Wednesday afternoon we received a very friendly reception. German sausage was much larger than son was expecting (!) and while I am normally an ale drinker the Dortmund beer was excellent. I hope businesses like this are able to get through current climate.

We have been coming to the buck inn as a family for Sunday dinner carvery for a while now and it was always our favourite as the food was amazing, lots of choice, good quality and different to any other place in the area. Today we were so disappointed to find out they’ve stopped the carvery dinners and and now serve Sunday dinner like any other pub. The food was bang average and the price was still the same. It’s lost is appeal because now it’s like any other average pub dinner.Sorry to say we won’t be returning unless they change back to how it was.

This looks a lovely restaurant, both when you go and on the website. We did a lovely 7 miles walk over Nab Ridge from Chop Gate, and having checked the website to make sure they'd be open and serving food, finished it in time for a late lunch at The Buck Inn around 2.00pm. But when we got there we found it shut, despite the website saying it would be open and serving food. We were not impressed but on talking to the landlady discovered they're having great difficulty getting staff and so currently can only open from 5.00pm. A shame as it looked great and had a great lunch and sandwich menu online.

It may be a problem if you are a vegetarian though as on the menu we had there was no vegetarian option.I had venison goulash with spaetzle while my husband loved his pork chop ,sauerkraut, pickled cabbage and mash. The German beer I had went down a treat. We stayed at The Forge B&B; a few steps away and ate at The Buck whilst walking the coast to coast path. Chop Gate is tiny and The Buck is a hub of activity and a natural meeting point for village locals and walkers. it is one of the places where the Cleveland Way overlaps the Coast to Coast and we very much enjoyed meeting walkers in the convivial, welcoming atmosphere of The Buck. The food is well above average pub food, and the service is brisk and unobtrusive. Open topped pie was savoury and meaty with good, firm hot water crust pastry beneath. The prawn starter had a bit too much squirty balsamic but that of course is a matter of personal taste. The cakes and desserts are stunning but the generous portions made dessert a bridge too far for us. Good beer too.

I had a friend, from Italy, staying with her dog. As the weather was so hot, even in the evening, we didn’t want to leave him in the car, so I searched for a dog friendly pub. The Buck was an excellent choice. We enjoyed our meal so much that we went back a couple of nights later. Choice of food is good, freshly cooked and well presented. The young man who looked after us was extremely pleasant and he greeted us by name as we walked thro the door on the second visit. We live about 20minutes drive away and it’s a lovely run up Clay Bank and then back down Carlton Bank.

Visited lunch time as a table of 4 . We chose some specials off the blackboard. Couldn't believe quality of roast beef for £6.50, Cajun chicken salad & omelettes all priced at £6.50. Although the mains were 1st class , i can truly recommend the desserts which were all homemade . I had sticky toffee pudding & the others had tangy lemon tart with cassis glaze. Great service with a smile from the chef and the owner . Only downfall , was that it was rather quite, but it was mid week in early December. I'm sure that if they maintain these standards & value for money it will be hard in the future to get a table .

We stayed for 2 nights using the groupon deal offer. When we arrived we were greeted by welcoming staff however it was freezing and was told that the heating would come on later. Thought it was a bit strange as it was the start of the weekend and the weekends weather forecast had correctly predicted freezing conditions -7c+ however there was a portable heater in the room which we switched on straight away. The room was very basic and small. On arrival we both wanted a drink in the bar but because it was so cold we didn't bother and the bar/restaurant area they had a feature fire place surprisingly it was boarded up why wasn't it lit? In addition there were no niceties in the bar e.g. ornaments flowers as you would expect etc.. It was just plain drab. We had dinner and the chef appears to have lost his way food was not presented well and basically the food was slapped on the plate. We booked because it was a German theme cuisine which we thoroughly enjoy, however I did not have the slightest opportunity to experience any German cuisine what so ever it was very disappointing. I did wonder if the business was possibly up for sale to account for the disappointing food and stay.

We stopped on Sunday on the off chance of a nice Sunday roast in a cosy country pub. What we got was a inexperienced barmaid, 60 minute wait for food even though there was only two other couples eating. The food was microwaved, bland and very salty. We stayed for a couple for nights and had some really good food. On the Friday night we had a really nice meal, I had grouse and my wife had mackerel for a starter, and then we both opted for the Rippchen a German dish of pork chop cured at The Buck Inn before being slow braised in cider & apple sauerkraut. Served with mashed potato, red cabbage, herb roasted carrots & onion gravy. It was really excellent and reminded me of some of my families Danish cooking, good and flavoursome, not the best dish to present well but then the taste outweighed the looks. For a desert my wife had chocolate chip bread and butter pudding, which she felt was on the heavy side being made with brioche, the only poor dish, I had a cheese board of local cheeses. The meal was accompanied by some nice German lager Dortmunder Union Pils, and my wife had Rivaner wine with her main course. I did revert to a glass of merlot with my cheese though. The breakfast was really good, all of the ingredients were local and our host Wolfgang prided himself on good provenance of all of his ingredients. This was evident the sausages were meaty and nicely spiced, the bacon had real taste and the black pudding was one of the best I have had, if there was a complaint the breakfast was too large. On Saturday night we decided not to go for the starter having overeaten at breakfast and in the day, I had a Bucks Pale before the meal a nice light hoppy pint, my wife went for a G&T. For the meal we both had the Dexter steak off the special board, the steak was tender and succulent, and the chips were some of the best I have had in years, golden brown, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, accompanied by a nice Merlot. We both had the coffee and chocolate cheesecake for desert, again from the special board.Overall the food was excellent, drinks were reasonably well priced and Wolfgang prided himself on his beer keeping. We would definitely eat at the Buck Inn again.

We visited this restaurant one lunch time after seeing an offer on groupon. The restaurant was in a lovely location at the foot of the Cleveland hills and seemed inviting from outside. We were a little disappointed that there was a limited menu of 3 starters and 4 mains but this was pointed out on the groupon voucher. I am vegetarian and didn't fancy the pasta (the only vegetarian dish) so asked if I could replace this with a cheaper choice from the menu..... I was told that any change from the groupon menu would incur a surcharge of £2..................I found this strange as I wanted a cheaper meal. Our starter of Brie was delicious, my husbands pie was nice but my pasta was average. In my opinion businesses should be using groupon to entice customers in, show them how good you are and hope they will return........ I will not be returning.

Dropped in on the off chance that they were serving early, and were welcomed with a smile. However we were soon advised that three or four items on the relatively limited menu were 'off' - including all our first choices - so that this was not a good start. After a somewhat lengthy wait, the chosen items arrived, well cooked, hot and passably presented, with reasonable quantities and good value for money. An attractive pub, with limited food offering, but quite acceptable for an 'on the journey' meal.

We had walked over from Ingleby Cross on the Coast To Coast, and had the Buck Inn on our radar as a possible overnight stay. As we were camping the whole length we hadn't booked anything, but Wolfgang was more than accommodating to our late request, picking us up from Clay Bank Top and dropping us off in the morning, saving us a 5 mile round trip down a fairly bad road walking wise. The first thing I noticed was the excellent array of beers on the bar - I absolutely love Munich beer and was overjoyed to see Hofbrau Original and Hofbrau Dunkel on offer. The Original rejuvenated my spirits after a long day walking with a heavy pack over the moors, and I would challenge any walker who turns down the opportunity to sample it.The menu is excellent, with good British pub grub on offer (but done to a standard far higher than any normal pub - a fellow walker had the salmon fillet and it was superb) but what stands out is the Bavarian and German dishes on offer. We opted for the Ripchen and I wasn't disappointed. Lots of pork and lots of cabbage. It was lovely washed down with a pint of dunkel. The night passed in peace. A little rain, but this *is* Yorkshire after all. Lots of owls were heard, which lulled us to sleep (as did the Helles). The breakfast menu was extensive, with something for everyone. We opted for the porridge, which was excellent, and there was unlimited orange juice. The only thing which could have possibly marked down my enjoyment of the Buck Inn is the lack of Schweinshaxe, but Wolfgang assured me it was something he wanted to start serving. We will definitely be back (on the motorcycle this time - the pub is also biker friendly) and look forward to visiting again.
