The Brown Derby in Lambeth

Came here for a quick bite and a drink after a work event at the Oval which is right around the corner. Felt very welcome here - the girl behind the bar was working by herself and was very friendly and good. She made nice cocktails :) We all ordered food which came pretty quickly and tasted delicious. Recommend if you’re visiting the area!

Now called The Derby, a fabulous wee Irish pub near the Oval in London. Great ambience and friendly staff. But what cuts it above the rest is one of the best pints of Guinness I have tasted outside Ireland. They must really look after their beers. Well worth a visit if in the area.

Went in for a quick drink after dinner. We were turned away barman said last orders were at 9:30. I pointed out on my phone it wasn’t yet 9:30. He said “I don’t care” and just stared at us. Most unprofessional thing I’ve ever seen. Won’t be coming back which is a shame as the interior looked cool.

Um típico pub londrino, com música ambiente e decoração agradável. Chegamos de viagem com intenção de visitar outros pubs, no entanto pela proximidade do hotel acabamos conhecendo o local, e tivemos uma ótima suspresa. Boa variedade de cervejas com preço justo (pint £4,40), cardápio com opções variadas. Pedimos a porção pequena de fish and chips e nos surpreendemos pois é muito bem servida, maior do que esperávamos. Com certeza indico conhecer o local!

pub smells like a toilet. food is not what you expect in a pub not for everyone .so if you don't like weird food or weird smells then this is not for you

It’s my local pub and I have been coming very often to this place but recently the quality of the food has changed and it’s not a good change. Crispy squid is soggy, and have a look at the picture with unwashed salad. Hopefully after this review chef will check the quality before sending the food out to the customers!!!

We've been here lots. Last night we popped in for drinks and it was great that they had all 4 Real Ales running and in good condition. We were made very welcome by Colin & his team who are always chatty. Thanks again for a great evening!

Très bonne ambiance, les plats sont excellent et le personnel agréable. Nous y avons passé un bon moment et les prix sont abordable.

Food was amazing and charged cheap considering the quality of how great it was. Drinks was priced reasonably. Bar tender I believe was named cole was very warm and welcoming and made great cocktails. I shall be revisiting

Stumbled across this place yesterday as we have a new client around the corner. Was supposed to be doing 'dry January' and then came across The Brown Derby! The beer was lovely and Mauro (big Roma fan!) who runs the place was explaining how often they clean their pipes etc! Hence the beer being tremendous. Didn't have food but people were eating and the food looked nice. Atmosphere was great and we will definitely be back! Thank you Mauro! From Chris (the Liverpool fan!)

Visited The Brown Derby yesterday. I can honestly say beyond certainty that I have never in my life encountered ruder bar staff than I did in that bar. I sat a table that was fashioned as mushroom with two toadstools for seats. I placed my drink on the table, sat down, leant on the table and the entire thing collapsed. Went to the bar to explain that the table had collapsed and my drink had been spilt. The bar staff told me he hoped I would be cleaning it up and refused to provide me with another drink. He then proceeded to ignore me for the next 10 minutes. I eventually got his attention again and showed him the mushroom table. I lifted the enter top off to show him that it had collapsed. He told me that it was not his problem. Judging from the some other reviews about the rudeness of the bar staff in this bar, it's obviously not the first time they've been clocked for being outright RUDE.

Popped in for a bite to eat and a quick pint. From the out side it looks like a small dark bar but when you step in the door you are greeted with some smooth jazz and a well stocked bar with a good range of beers and spirits. Being a Thursday it was nice and quiet but certainly not dead. I ordered the steak ciabatta and would have taken a photo had I not eaten it so quickly! Price is good for london and staff are helpful. Love the decor.

This pub wins the 'Rudest Bar Staff in London' Award hands down. Having experienced very rude and aggressive behaviour from them last year, we decided (a group of 8, male/female split) to give it another try. What a mistake that was. They were even ruder this time and of course we will never return. It's supposed to be the hospitality business, not the hostile business. Go next door to The Hannover where they understand how to run a pub.

We were a group of 6 ( 50 - 60 year olds) and apparently we were classed as intoxicated after 4 bottles because we hadn’t ordered food. hope they remember that when the hoardes of test match and T 20 crowds go in there because they will be breaking the law serving drink to intoxicated idiots half our age and considerably less well behaved !! Not impressed

He estado en el Derby brown un montón de veces mientras vivía en Vauxhall. Me trajo su familia y amigos y nunca decepcionó. La comida siempre es buena, todo lo que he probado, me ha encantado. Clásico de las salchichas y puré a la halloumi burger.

Booked a table for 25 from 4pm until 6pm. Noel was brilliant all the way through. He arranged canapes for us which were perfectly cooked, reasonable priced and plenty of them! Thank you. Nothing was too much trouble even though they were packed! Thank you.

El Salón Oval era nuestro favorito lugar para almorzar en la zona, pero que sacada de ido, así que tuvimos que buscar cerca. Brown Derby está cerca, pero eso es su única similitud. Es realmente un pub y solo ofrece comida porque es lo que se espera. El personal del bar indiferente- creo que es mejor si saben que tienen que ganar, pero extraños atención. Bastante estándar de cerveza, también. Y la comida es bastante corriente. Hay un montón de bares alternativos probaremos antes de volver.

Come here for pre-Test match breakfasts. Has quirky decor, decent choice of beers and ales, and very acceptable cooked breakfast. Toasted sandwiches are bit weird - no butter applied? Good coffee also available.

Cada vez que paso por aquí, siempre hay un ambiente encantador con genuina welcomeness. Personal amable que luchan para que se sienta cómodo y relajado. Impresionante

Decidimos probar este pub mientras cricket era llovió en el Oval. Razonable selección de cervezas, incluyendo uno de mis favoritos de Sagres. Una! Así que una selección razonable de comida que no he probado, pero después de haber visto algunos de los platos son de aspecto apetitoso. También no hay televisores sólo algunos música de fondo.

Non davo fiducia al locale per la posizione molto vicina all'uscita della metro Oval e per il quartiere....invece entrata mi sono dovuta ricredere! Atmosfera calda e accogliente, buona musica, buon cibo. Le porzioni sono come tapas e davvero buone. un buon posto dove chiacchierare e scaldarsi dopo una giornata a Londra.

This is the only place I look forward to going to meet friends and enjoy the atmosphere. Sometimes there's a DJ playing great music but mostly its a quiet place to talk and enjoy a glass.

Great staff and friendly atmosphere inside. Had a soup and a sandwich for a fiver. Pretty cheap if you ask me?

Frequented this establishment on a Thursday evening with a friend. After a hard days business we went to enjoy a drink in the pleasant surroundings and calm ambience as we've experienced in the past as moderate visitors. Upon ordering our second round of drinks - amounting to approximately £8 and consisting of 2 pints, I produced a Scottish Clydesdale banknote, as I have on numerous previous occasions. Apparently legal tender of the united kingdom isn't accepted here? The gentleman behind the bar became extremely agitated and visibly emotional after a very brief back and forth on UK financial statutory rights. On conclusion of this, myself and my friend were ejected from the bar and told to "never come back" without rhyme nor reason as instructed by the gentleman. More than shock or anger about this incident - I am very bewildered about the manner in which this establishment is run - as the chap said he was the manager on duty. I do hope the gentleman seeks help for his anger and emotional insecurities as I'm sure any older or more frail patrons would feel extremely threatened or uncomfortable if a similar situation was to arise with Scottish banknotes. I invite any investigation into this, as I'm sure CCTV will show the man accosting me and coming from behind the bar and making his presence felt despite visible lack of an SIA licence. As instructed, I will never frequent this establishment again, nor will I recommend to anyone.

I was staying at The Belgrave opposite, so needed somewhere to eat in the evening. I underestimated the portion sizes massively. I thought the light bites would be the size of tapas and ordered four plates of food. It was all completely delicious, excellent value for money, and there was tons of it. I did my utmost best, but I was beaten. I will definitely return, and order more carefully next time. Nice atmosphere, but very dark inside. Food took a while to come, but it's all cooked fresh, so that's a trade off I'm happy to live with.

Cool, quiet, quaint pub across from the Begrave Hotel. We ordered tapas about 30 min before kitchen close and they were on point! Excellent flavor and above average selection and presention. Plesently surprised and pleased. Would definitely go back and recommend.

Popped in tonight and think it's a brand new menu Seems to be tapas only in the evenings now but they do a 5 plates and get a 6th free. The plates are between £3 and £6 and really great portions Ordered 6 different plates which were all super tasty and was way too much food for two. Plus two large glasses of wine it came to £32. BargainWill return often

I love this pub. I've been coming here on and off since it opened. I would come here ALL the time if the toilets weren't so f#%king awful. I've even gone home on occasion to use my loo and left my friends there and returned after home loo usage. FFS you are established now. Put some money back in to the toilets!!!!

Went in here after the cricket and the staff were so rude we left after one drink. Will never visit again.

Popped in whilst visiting a customer for a beer. really friendly, relaxed atmosphere. Great choice of beers and food available. No outside seating which was as shame, but nice all the same.

In a very hot day in Summer, I visited this place once with my friend, and the overall experience was 5/5 stars.We had some grilled chicken and ribs from their lunch menu which was like 5 GBP each. The portion was huge, and food was tasty as well. While enjoying some beer sitting on their nicely decorated, we waited for food and that was delivered in time. Without even knowing, we spent more time there than we expected. Because, in that very dehydrating sunny day, this place gave us some psychological energy boost as I believe.Just visit this place if you happen to walk by the Kennigton Church or the oval underground station. You will experience what I meant.

Met a friend for drinks here but we didn't eat. Good range of drinks, nice staff, good music but still unpretentious. Great place. Oh and prices weren't too eye watering for those of us who were non-Londoners...

It's a good honest pub in a very pleasant part of Oval on Clapham road. No pretensions here but a very pleasant ambience.Watty

Came here with a mate after a fairly booze filled evening at the nearby Crown & Anchor.This place is absolutely hilarious - so eclectic and full of personality. The exterior doesn't give much away and is a typical if rather low key London boozer. Inside however the decor is tropical in places and the whole place is imbued with a red glow. Absolutely oodles of atmosphere abounds.They have a small but decent selection of real ales and the staff were very accommodating considering how drunk we were! Cost wise, it's fairly typical for that area.I have nothing but praise for this rather strange drinking den near Oval Tube. Go and experience it's unique charms for yourselves.

We went there to have a few drinks as we were staying in the neighbourhood. Nice and original deco inside. Friendly staff we could taste the beers before ordering one. We had a good time.

Went in for a quick drink this evening. First thought from outside looking in: 'not so sure about the red lighting' - but then we stepped inside and were greeted by a really friendly barman who was doing a fantastic job of running the place. Good ale, and a capirinha that the wife really enjoyed. The decor is a quirky mix (in a good way) of this and that, with comfy seats too. We'll be back!

Nice pub, seriously let down by the state of the gents. To use the stinking urinals you have to walk through stagnant pee. It's been like this for ages. Obviously I've never tried the food in here.

Love the sunday roast here, huge portions, delicious and really good prices, cocktails are great too and quirky decor. Staff are lovely.

Never eaten in here but frequent the boozer whenever I'm attending cricket at the Kia oval.Good selection of beers and drinks, seats are comfy and the seating areas are usually fairly busy whenever I have been in.The outside area is handy for smokers or those just wanting to enjoy the summer weather or to get some fresh air.Beer is a bit pricey but it's London!Never eaten in here but the food looks good

Really good beer and the atmosphere is really particular. The guy is so kind and explains you all the different kind of beers they have. I'd like to come here for lunch next time. The dishes I've seen are really interesting.

For under a tenner you can't beat this place for a Sunday roast. Big portions with all the trimmings, a great spot in South London.

Wanted a quick bite to eat after finding out we couldn't get a table at the OvalHouse's resataurant. Atmospheric, friendly pub with a very local crowd; we had a delicious halloumi burger with potato wedges and salad. The far end would seem to be the loud "blokey", end, but it wasn't intimidating.

I live nearby and would really love this pub to be great. The decor is fantastic and there are some signs that the owners are trying to make it cool.A few pointers, then:1. If someone phones up to reserve a table, perhaps actually reserve them a table? I got there last night and said I'd booked, and the gormless staff looked at me completely blankly. There were tables free, so it was no problem, but it didn't make me feel particularly valued.2. The back half of the pub reeks of urinal cubes, to the extent that my guests requested we leave and go somewhere else. The toilets are downstairs in the basement, so I'm not sure why it's always smelled so strongly up on the ground floor, but... it really, really does. Surely this wouldn't be too hard to sort out?3. The food is really, really hit and miss. It's a broad menu and I think the chef does have a bit of skill - but low standards. Good empanadas, but then crappy tinned olives. Tasty calamari and chorizo, but a burger bun that was solid as a rock and dry as the Sahara. Potentially nice spicy wedges accompanying the halloumi burger, but drowned in oil and completely soggy.There's so much potential here and I don't think it'd take more than average skill to turn the place around. I'd love for there to be a transformation - it's got a cool independent vibe and I would far rather it stayed like that than was taken over by some gastrochain and lost its quirks. But... I won't be rushing back for food any time soon.

Really friendly and helpful staff. However, food was a disappointment. Veg platter for two with side of wedges. No sign of guacamole or tomato salsa; pickled cabbage and Mediterranean veg a total disappointment. Side of potato wedges burnt to a crisp. No surprises that no one was eating there! Guess it's just a pub for a good drink and chat.

We reviewed the menu for the Brown Derby online and it sounded good. We wanted to have lunch before going to a Cricket match at the Oval. We found the menu inside bore no resemblance to the online menu. I ordered warm ciabatta with cheddar, pickle and potato wedges for £6.95. It was horrible. Warm ciabatta with cheddar and pickle does not work, it wasn't toasted it was just warm and cut in half. My boyfriend had tuna in ciabatta, but again this was just warm bread with a filling. The wedges were boiled potatoes which had a film of oil over them and some sort of spicy seasoning. We ate it because we were hungry but we wouldn't go back.

Good food, friendly staff, and a room full of allsorts. Somewhere I'd be happy to go back to when in the Oval for a meal or just a drink.

Having found myself in the Hotel from Hell with no restaurant, I was desperate for somewhere to eat. This Pub was just across the road and looked unusual - well worth investigating. Being a lover of German beers, I was sad to be told that they had none but they compromised by offering me a Dutch pilsner on draught - well worth the sacrifice! The atmosphere and decor is rather quirky but pleasant, although I would have preferred a little more light to see what I was eating. The food is all home made with the emphasis tending towards mediterranean cooking. However it is good and should I find myself in the area again - well worth a return visit.

We needed somewhere to eat on a weekday evening. Nice beer and nice food. Friendly staff. Just want we wanted.

The Brown Derby is a cosy little pub on a corner near Oval tube station in south London. The atmosphere is good and the décor is unusual and interesting – taxidermy, mismatched tables and chairs, a large globe, interesting pictures on the walls, and they have installed a really wacky mechanical contraption of woven fans moving back and forth in the ceiling in the front part of the pub. The music is often good, ranging from blues, to old school rock n roll, to jazz to ska, and they sometimes have live bands on. Friendly staff and good service. The food is rather good for a pub as well! Worth a visit!
