My friend and I had a fantastic meal here at the weekend, the staff were lovely and the food was extremely tasty. It's a lovely little pub with a nice outside seating area which would be ideal for summer. Would highly recommend a visit!

Stayed at the Brown Cow Apartment in September 2024 while exploring some of the Southern Fells. Even after seeing the photos when we booked, we were surprised at the size of the place - downstairs has a fully equipped kitchen, dining area and living room whilst upstairs has a bathroom and the two bedrooms. Much more than we expected from an 'apartment'! The bedrooms were warm, comforting and cosy. Plenty of charging points. Everything was clean and well maintained. No bath in the bathroom but a nice hot shower with great water pressure. We didn't get to try the food as we had a late check in, but for anyone in the same situation there are a number of local restaurants, shops and takeaways a short walk away in the town. We opted for fish and chips from Sea Breeze which was very tasty. On our departure day, we needed to leave earlier than check out usually begins (wanted to set off by 5am, check out provided from 7am). This was no issue and we arranged a spot to leave the keys. We've just booked again to stay at the end of October as there's more we'd like to do and see in the area. Would absolutely recommend - especially for £90 per night. Thanks Brown Cow!

Went here for an evening meal (31.07.24) SPECIFICALLY asked on arrival if food was being served (as it was after 7pm). Was told at the bar, yes and pointed to menus after ordering drinks and confirming that we then order food at the bar. Found a seat inside, outside was very busy. Looked at menus and then hubby went back to the bar to order food to be told the kitchen was now closed! (not even 10 minutes later!!) Very disappointing. No word from the guy at the bar to say, "by the way we're closing the kitchen so you need to get your order in" and we were sat right by the bar. Anyway, had a lovely meal at Francescas Restaurant in the middle of Barrow, which I highly recommend. This place, not so much.

We stayed overnight in the cottage and had a lovely afternoon in the pub and walks close by. However the steak I had was awful. I would suggest perhaps better quality cuts of meat and smaller quantities and someone who knows how to cook them. I rarely leave a steak but had to on this occasion. Otherwise our stay was superb

Beautiful pub and friendly locals. Sat outside as it was a beautiful day. Unfortunately the food wasn’t up to much. The chips were overcooked on the outside and undercooked on the inside and the onion rings were really greasy. A real shame as the food had been highly recommended. I think we were maybe just unlucky

This pub is a family favourite and we visit every time we travel back home to see family. This time was a Tuesday evening. As always food was wonderful, also very reasonably priced, had a lovely pleasant waitress not sure of her name but I think she might have been training. My wife's lasagne was really nice and came with a generous piece of garlic ciabata. My meal, on the other hand, was below average. The steak pie itself was nice but the veg was so bland I left it. The gravy was watery with no taste and the amount of it was very stingy. We won't be going to eat there again

Went here for birthday lunch with my family. I am celiac and get very anxious when eating out. I needn’t of worried the lady who served us, Laura, was fantastic. After telling me what would be safe for me to eat, when i’d decided went and double checked with the chef, putting my mind at ease. All our meals were plentiful and delicious! A special thank you to Laura, and we will definitely be back!

A family friendly pub. We pre ordered as there was 11 of us (aged 16-83) including one vegan and food allergies. All tastes catered for and menu was extensive. Shame the fried food is used for prawns as my son couldn’t have anything done in the fryer including chips or chicken strippers. Waitress was fantastic, really polite and helpful and ensured we had everything we wanted. Prawn cocktail starter, halloumi starter were excellent. Steak is well worth ordering.

We stayed the night midweek in the apartment attached to the pub as my son had an interview in Barrow the next day and we'd travelled up from Yorkshire. The accommodation was clean and comfortable and did the job. We arrived in the evening and food service was on another hour until 8. We had a couple of pies with Veg and a Lasagne. Food was plentiful, cooked well and tasted very good, no complaints there. As we were waiting a few more groups came in to order food and didn't have to wait too long. As the bar area is fairly small I can imagine there will be longer wait times in busy periods, especially in summer but for us it was perfect for what we needed.

The barman was very polite and helpful. There was a good selection of ales and the menu was varied and reasonably priced. We ate upstairs in the restaurant. The only problem was that we were shown where to sit even though the restaurant wasn't busy. There was a varied menu from steaks to fish to pies. The food was well cooked but was a bit on the cold side. I had the chicken, leek and ham pie and the portion was quite large but the vegetables were cold. I didn't send it back because I was hungry. The chips could do with being changed as one portion of them was mainly small scrappy bits, however these were changed and that portion was much better. The pub wasn't very busy but it was a Thursday night and it is tucked away from the main road. We wouldn't have known it was there if someone hadnt told us. We would return but we are not from that area. All the staff were polite and yes I would recommend if near there.

For dinner in our planned Dalton restaurant, we couldn't get booked, so we came to our other first choice, The Brown Cow pub. It's not easy to find - addresses given seem to vary, and our sat-nav voice didn't help us. Ten minutes late, we were warmly greeted and taken upstairs to our table. Over a drink from the bar we chose from the good menu and we ate well. My wife said the chilli, her favourite, was one of the best she'd ever tasted, and my duck breast was perfect - cooked through, not bloody, yet delicious and tender. We don't visit Dalton often, but when we're here next we know where to eat! Meanwhile, we recommend The Brown Cow highly.

I have been eating here for a few years, the food which was once pretty good is now just adequate. Service is always good, the food is traditional English pub food and the place is pretty clean. Eating here once again in September my disappointment has grown to the extent I feel I must leave a review, the food quality has been decreasing to the point a peppercorn sauce is inedible and simply ground pepper in a bit of cream, garlic bread is simply cold soft baguette with melted butter and starters all frozen and cooked in a fryer. The impetus to this review however is hearing staff laughing about a colleague with disabilities who had left, in a completely unprofessional manner- I challenged them at the bar as hearing such words is disgusting. A serious overhaul by management is required as the brown cow is sinking fast

We were told about this pub by a friend. Looking at the reviews seem good place. Was busy when we got there about 6:00. Good selection of beers, only 2 serving . Had to wait 45 min for order to come did say it would a wait ,but it was worth waiting for.food hot ,and good size portion's. Had serf and turf and mixed grill . Considering only had 2 chefs in kitchen it must have been hard coping with such a big menu. . I know it's difficult getting staff at the moment ,maybe if the menu is reduced a bit this may save time especially prep time for chefs .

Unfortunately we had a very poor experience for lunch today. We were there for 3 and a half hours due to long wait times and being ignored by waiting staff multiple times when they were standing around arguing over breaks. When we asked to order food we were ignored even though the staff were looking directly at us and decided to turn the other way several times and this happened with 3 of the staff not just one. Preference was taken with the customers in the beer garden over the people who had made reservations such as ourselves. But there was no apology for wait times and the attitude towards customers was very rude. We were very polite and understood that these places can be busy causing wait times but their attitude let them down. I have always enjoyed it here however this experience has put me off going in the future.

Booked a table for 2. They had the booking down for 6 people. Shown to out table, asked what drinks we wanted amd given menu's. Four times after this, we were asked if we'd like to order drinks. Each time we replied, we'd ordered and were waiting for them, but no drinks arrived. Ordered starters and mains, still no drinks. When they did arrive, they were the wrong drinks. Correct ones eventually came. Starters were perfect.....thankfully. Mains arrived, a garlic chicken and a peppered chicken. The garlic chicken was cooked perfectly. Shame the peppered chicken wasn't. Cut into the peppered chicken. It was literally raw in the middle. Discreetly advised a staff member. They said sorry and asked if I wanted anything else. I advised no, a short while later they brought streak pie, that I hadn't ordered. The plates were cleared, asked if we wanted more drinks. We ordered drinks and asked for dessert menus. Drinks or dessert menus never arrived. Around us, other tables were complaining. We again repeatedly asked if we wanted drinks, and we again said we were waiting for them. We gave up waiting and went to pay. To be charged for 3 sets of drinks we never got and an undercooked meal. We explained to the person about our experience and while we were saying they were also getting more complaints of raw chicken. We visit the Brown Cow regularly, and never have we had a bad meal, but tonight was awful. Service was diabolical, no one knew what they were doing. Food wasn't cooked properly. Absolutely awful.

Booked in, asked to wait as they were busy, forgotten about until we asked. Service was slow, when meal came the waiter didn’t know how the steak was cooked, all steaks cooked medium (which wasn’t what we asked for), rack of ribs was just slapped on plate, no salad and presentation was dire. Table next to us, left most of their food and ordered a kebab whilst waiting to pay/ complain, they were not impressed. When paying the staff apologise for the delay, saying that they were under staffed. Have to say Brown Cow, if you are under staffed why did you take so many bookings and people walking in. It takes a long time to get a good name in the hospitality sector but next to no time to get a bad reputation.

Last minute descion to eat here last night on a recommendation.Little odd place lol. Really pretty outside all light up with fairy lights and gas heaters and pergola. Looks cute. Tiny bar area as its more for food than drinks.Massive menu... always remember Gordon Ramsey I think saying less is more. I tend to agree. It's like a telephone directory! Was about £100 for 4 with drinks so not too bad inc a couple deserts.2 of us enjoyed the food 2 didn't. Service is generally good for locals I guess but not the most professional but kinda goes with the vibe of the place. Our time there involved an argument at the till over quality of a dish and the customer was in a small group and the bill was just over £200 - she complained about a starter... they argued the toss for 15 mins...just give it her for free lol. She's spent £200 and we are all listening in on you trying to justify it!2nd waiter smashed a glass picking it up, 3rd they have such bad WiFi nobody can pay on card and they wonder about waving the pdq in the air and tapping it against the walls lol.Dropped one of our starters on floor.Thought they bought out a wrong main only for it to be right but she thought it was something else...Our table was at the top of the stairs. Everytime they walked up our table and chairs juddered like we were sitting on a vibration machine. It's an experience! I half thought the calamity was on purpose to add charm!Basic food, basic kinda price.Cold coffee finished us off!Kinda weird, kinda OK typical for back end of nowhere place for locals. 3 out of 5 but think on a good night they could get a 4 if they weren't so all over the place.

She then snatched the digital ordering system off of him as he was taking an order. This was embarrassing for the young server as well as everyone in the restaurant as he then had to ask another member of staff to go and take there orders. Not great I'm afraid and same feedback as others with overcooked / tough meats, hard veg, and even the Yorkshire pud was, ...well if you make them yourself you’ll know what I mean. Massive portions and agree with others who would prefer quality before quantity. Was looking forward to this as it has been consistently really nice in previous visits (many down the years). We placed our order in advance via the app only to be met by a rude and awkward response informing us that there were other people in front of the queue, and that we would have to wait an even longer period of time!. If hyoid can’t cope with the business, don’t open your doors!. Never again!

I have used the brown cow for years before moving away so it was the obvious choice when visiting for a family get together. Our starters came and they were fine. Then came the hour wait for the main, we had 2 toddlers with us who got impatient with the long wait, we also asked for a gluten free meal of sausage for our 3 year old grand daughter. When the meals fi ally came an hour later the sausage meal was huge with 10 sausages as well as veg and an adults size chips, we ordered 3 roasts and a childs roast. The meat was so tough!! And the childs roast served on a long narrow plate, totally inappropriate for a child. Also a mixed grill was ordered which was so over cooked and dry it was inedible, infact the amaount of food that went back should have raised concerns. We then waited another 40 minutes for our desserts, my daughters arrived flowed by ours 10 minutes later. I ordered warm fudge cake and ice cream but the fudge cake hadnt been heated or attempted to be heated so had to go back. The meal came to £118.00 and we hardly toucbed the food. It was disgusting! I told the lad who served us and he apologised but that doesnt help when forking out £118.00 for what can only be described as bin waste. Very disappoonted and needless to say we wont be back!!

This pub offered a variety of food and deserts, the staff were polite, friendly and very helpful and even enjoyed a bit of football banter with them among other things. The steak pie was rammed full of steak and the portions were big enough to fill a plate on its own. The desert was also a decent size portion and even got extra custard to go with it. Overall would defiantly recommend this pub if your in the area, they also offered plenty of parking for customers.

We were directed to this pub from another pub in the area that weren’t doing lunch. The staff were very helpful and friendly. The food was really good and portion size for a lunch was just perfect. Nothing too much trouble, lovely friendly place with nice outside seating. I will certainly visit again and would recommend it to anyone who asked.

We walked in here one lunchtime having not booked a table and the staff were very accommodating and we were seated out in the garden as requested. They had a great outdoor space which, was perfect on a sunny day. The lunch menu prices were very reasonable with dishes for £8.95. We had the fish and chips and an all day breakfast. Both meals were a good size and very good value. Would visit again if in the area.

We booked in to eat here on the 3rd July. I ordered garlic mushrooms which came on a grubby serving plate deep-fried and full of water, the salad was days old as the green had turned brown. For the main I had the viking gammon which was covered in over cooked mozzarella and spicy chips, which were chips killed with spicy seasoning. The dish was so big it could feed 4 people. Not the best food . For the size of the place they could probably shorten there 6 a4 page menus and concentrate on quality not quantity. The seats outside were so sticky I got a cloth bag to sit on that I had to peel of the bench when we were leaving. I would not recommend this pub or go back unless it changed a few things.

We booked as it was my mum birthday, although when we arrived they didn’t have our booking down, they were thankfully still able to accommodate us. The food was lovely, I has the steak pie. It was huge. Actually all the meals were large portions. I really wanted sticky toffee pudding but couldn’t squeeze it in. Although the food was good, the main reason I am writing this review is down to the service we received from Christophe. He was very attentive but not over the top, he really looked after all the tables in our area. He was friendly and chatty and everyone around was smiling and enjoying themselves as he made them feel at ease. We’d asked for no salad on one of the meals, and it did come out with salad on the plate, which wasn’t an issue really but he spotted this as he was going around and came over to apologise and offered to take it back. We said it didn’t matter though. We thought that was great service. He really did make our visit. He is an asset to the restaurant.

Biggest steak I have ever had - fab. Staff were nice and we ate outside in the sunshine and the service was good, although a little slow due to the pandemic.

I have to say I am absolutely disgusted with the visit I made with my family. Not only did it take 40 minutes just to take our order but the staff were rude and ignored us and served other people the waiter was very cocky. But hope was still there for the food. The saying that hope breeds enteral misery is right! The food was very undercooked and over cooked! Sadly this was the worst meal I have ever had. We will not be returning.

I've been staying locally and popping in at different times. Each day, they've been extremely accommodating considering I hadn't booked a table. The beer was great and the food was even better. I'd like to highlight Mathew for his exceptional service. If you like good food and great beer. Here is the place to go!

Read reviews for Sunday lunch and thought would try. Mistake. Meat- ordered lamb- tasted like thin over cooked beef. Vegetables tasted like boil in the bag. Yorkshire pudding size of a tiny cup cake. It was awful. Dreadful wine choice. Owner didn’t have a clue about the wine or where it was from. Save your money and go to Iceland.

The hunters chicken baguette was ok however the chips were cold and soggy and the onion rings where stuck to the bag and undercooked when I finally got them out the bag. The salad was below a average.

Ordered lamb roast and a turkey roast, arrived hot and at agreed time. Food was fresh and delicious, both meats were thickly sliced and there was more than enough- infact we both left a slice of meat for to eat later. Restaurant quality of the highest standard. Thank you brown cow

Booked a table outside owing to current legislation, under cover with electric and gas heaters, excellent service. Large choice on the menu, recommend the dipping prawns, mains are large portions with the optional Laughing Cow smaller portions (still big!). This pub is an absolute favourite of ours when we visit the Lake District. The food is ALWAYS so delicious and plentiful. Staff are always so friendly, welcoming and smiley. We were not disappointed when we visited in October. The food was as yummy as ever and staff were as friendly as ever. All Covid regulations being adhered to and it felt incredibly safe. There was hand sanitiser readily available, tables wiped down and spaced out etc. There was only two tables in the entire restaurant when we visited. This was the quietest we have ever seen this pub and that did feel a little sad but understandable with everything as it is at the moment. The laughing cow menu was up and running. I had a lasagne, chips and salad followed by a chocolate fudge cake with ice cream for 9.95. My husband had a Cumberland sausage with chips, gravy, chips and vegetables followed by fudge cake and custard. Also 9.95. Fantastic quality food and all homemade. We can’t recommenced this pub highly enough and wish it well through these tricky times. We will most definitely be back when we come back up to the lakes.

We had not booked in advance but rang and The Brown Cow had a table for us within the hour. Staff all wore full face screens and ensured we were seated safely in the restaurant. Large menu to choose from. Food was quick to arrive and was lovely and tasty. Huge portions with salad, chips and vegetables as sides meant no room for dessert. All the staff were very friendly and cheerful

We visited the Brown Cow and used the eat out to help out deal. Everything was excellent, from the starters of garlic mushrooms and garlic bread (which we were sent double of by mistake, but not charged for by the manager), the mains of Cajun chicken baguette, hunters chicken baguette, gammon and fish and chips were all delicious and the portions were huge. We asked for onion rings which I don’t think were on the menu, but it was no problem. Staff were very polite and friendly despite being very busy. Everything felt very safe. Excellent value for money. Our new favourite place. Thank you Brown Cow

Recently went for an evening meal here, sat outside in the lovely beer garden, the food was lovely but unfortunately we were asked to pay whilst in the middle of eating our starters which we weren't happy about. This was made worse when we actually wanted to order more drinks then had to be disturbed again to pay for these whilst eating our main. Very bad service and quite rude

The room we booked was awful, chair arms all ripped and sponge handing out. The staff(young kids) kept getting all the drink orders wrong and also tried to over charge on multiple occasions. We got told for cold buffet food it was 6pound something and for hot and cold it would be 9pound something. So they picked the 9pound option for 40 people. The food was absolutely awful and appalling. One bowl of chips, 3 small trays of dreadful sandwiches. And a few other crappy things. I most definitely not be going there again. Discussing place
