First time going into this pub, thought I’d give it a try. Really impressed everyone was so friendly, the food was really nice, I had a hotdog but my friend got a bigger meal and she said that was really good too. Really nice presentation with homemade bbq sauce. The pub itself is really nice, bright and clean with old beams and lots of character. They have a pool table which is great so had a few games of pool and chose some music on the juke box. Had a really nice afternoon there.

We eat here regularly and adore the Brown Cow. The food is home made and really tasty and the service absolutely great - Jeff and Sonja are so friendly, full of fun and helpful and really look after us. The Christmas decorations are up now and it is really cosy and twinkly. I can particularly recommend the home made lasagne which is delicious, but everything is good, including the daily specials, with some amazing home made pies. There is always something happening in the evenings, including live music, open mic and quizzes. This is what all good pubs should be like!

Visited this pub after friends recommendations and wasn't disappointed. Best Sunday Roast I have had for ages. Massive portion size and lamb was lovely and tender and no fat. Great traditional Sunday Roast vegetables - and creamy leeks were to die for. Shared a starter and glad we did as struggled to finish the main. Staff lovely, especially the owners and the afternoon ended with a late afternoon tribute band playing. Great way to spend a lazy Sunday. Well worth a visit.

Just happened across the The Brown Cow on a quick visit through Cockermouth. The cow pie was excellent. The menu offers it as a challenge. It is - unless your starving. It's a bigger pie than I'm normally used to in pubs and very tasty too. The Jennings Cumberland ale was pretty good too. A lovely meal.

Beef was like canned corned beef gravy like a scouse roux (flour mixed with water colored with gravy browning) creamed leeks a gelatinous tastless roux the other vegetables had obviously sat in a Baine Marie all day and was no taste difference between each vegetable although the food is terrible the staff are very welcoming and the owners are very nice people real shame this side of the business is such a let down personally iv never gave a trip advisor review but was a real let down

I visited here with my brother who had traveled up from Liverpool for a visit. I brought him to Cockermouth to have a look around and to get some food. Forgetting about food service hours every place we went to was closed, as we wondered down we noticed that food service here finished at 3pm so rushed in. It was very quiet and only about 3 people other than myself and brother which was understandable as it was the middle of the week and around 15 minutes rest for food. The meal we both had was the burger and it was absolutely worth it. We were a tad hungover and really felt the need for some good pub grub. What we got was so much more and definitely worth more money than it cost. I hugely recommend this pub for visitors or locals. Great food, amazing decor and lovely staff.

We re-discovered the Brown Cow recently when it re-opened following the floods and have really enjoyed every visit. There is always a good choice on the menu with daily specials to add to the dilemma of what to have. A particularly nice touch is the option to have a half portion ( still a good size!) for many of the dishes. Service is quick, efficient and friendly and the Landlord and Landlady are always welcoming and nothing is too much trouble. I have sampled the lasagne, the Cumberland sausage, the scampi, the fresh breaded plaice special and the vegetarian curry, all of which were very tasty. My husband has tried the Cow Pie, a good man-sized portion, which he thoroughly enjoyed. Puddings are very good too - if you still have room! Pleasant, airy decor and friendly locals. A great pub and very good value. This has now become a regular haunt for all the family.

We visited Cockermouth during our holiday to the Lake District we stopped there out of curiosity to see how the area had recovered from the floods. Cockermouth was badly effected and I wasn't really expecting to find much there in the way of eateries, but I was very mistaken. We popped into a beautiful bookshop and the ladies their told us the best places to eat, as we had been out all day we went to the nearest one and we were not disappointed. The Brown Cow is a pub with great food, my family had 8oz steak burgers that came with onion rings, salad and proper chips, I decided that I would have the lighter bites that I expected to be quite small and then I thought I could treat myself with a 'pud' I had the lasagna with salad and garlic bread it was a really good size,I'm not sure why they had it on the lighter menu as there was no way I could manage a 'pud' after eating the beautiful fayre. The service was great the barman was really helpful and couldn't do enough for us. I would definitely eat here again

I visited The Brown Cow a week after it reopened after being flooded by Storm Desmond. I ordered a chicken curry, nan bread and rice and the meal was as good as anything in a Chinese or Indian restaurant and good value for £ 9.95. Also the landlord and his staff seemed very friendly and made you feel welcome, always a plus point. I'd definitely recommend The Brown Cow as it's a bit cheaper and less pretentious than some other eating places in Cockermouth and they have a selection of newspapers for you to read while waiting for your meal.If you are disabled and fancy visiting the pub for a meal, there is disabled parking outside, which makes it popular with disabled customers. Otherwise the nearest parking is at Sainsburys( £ 1.80 for two hours).

It's been the best part of a decade since I last ate here and all I can say now is wow! Since its new owners took over I've been in for drinks a few times but never food. Did try a few weeks ago but it was on a Tuesday when they don't serve food. The food is definitely worth the praise it's received on trip advisor. My scampi and chips was huge but delicious. With a nice little side salad the only thing left at the end were the peas as they were a bit too overboiled for my taste. Nothing was left on my husband's plate of breaded camembert with a side of garlic bread. We were tempted by the sweets and next time will eat less during the day so there's space! The service was excellent, I've never had table service in a pub before. There was also change left from £25 which also included the drinks. Most of the other diners were having the cow pie which looked amazing so know what I'm having next time!

we had a great lunch! Very friendly landlord and co workers. Our dogs (a dachshund and a bassett hound were soon at ease. The meals were great: mushroom starter (tasty, although for me a little more stock would have uplifted it) Then the Cow pie! Delicious! Quite a big portion (the reason why i could not have it all) It taste like one of our Belgian specialities: Vlaamse karbonaden (beef stew with dark beer) but then in a pie. The taste was picco bello. (and i am quite well placed to say this, because I have been a (head)chef for 34 years) They can be proud oftheir signature dish! One minor point though: the fries could have been frying 2 more minutes. Fries are ment to be crunchy on the outside and 'mushy' on the inside. And they even have Duvel (my all time favorite Belgian beer. One they really must promote! (it is quite heavy, but really delicious! Our Dutch friends were pleased as well. And again I apologize for not finishing my plate. Whenever we are in the neighbourhood, we know where to have a drink and bite!

Visited for Sunday Lunch. From the word go I was let down. I booked through their facebook page, easy to use. But once I'd booked it tells you someone will be in touch to confirm. This to me meant I didn't have a booking until someone rang or emailed to confirm. I didn't hear anything and rather than turn up and be let down by perhaps not having a booking I called in to find out. The staff member I spoke to seemed uninterested and simply just showed me the booking written in their diary. When we turned up on the day table service was good. Not a lot of choice on the menu in terms of a full bar menu but more than enough choices for a sunday dinner. However, from the limited options on the menu I would have expected food out quite quickly. Not a 45 minute wait! There was only 3 of us at the table, the rest of the pub did not appear busy yet two tables were brought food before ours. One table even ordered, ate and were just leaving as our food appeared! Not sure if we'd been forgotten about but nobody came to let us know if they had. Food quality was good, plenty of it too. Unfortunately I don't fancy eating here again due to the wait.

Although there is nothing at all wring with this pub, it was just a little average. The food was nice, but a little generic and a shame there weren't more beers on draft. There wasn't much of an atmosphere, no music and a slightly soulless feel to the place. Not sure I would race back, but it's ok for a quick meal after a busy day.

An excellent meal for Ma-in law's birthday treat. Fantastic service and ambience, Lasagne with garlic bread, Cumberland sausage with black pudding, egg, onion rings and cherry tomatoes, Humongous steak burger with onion rings and Breaded camembert with Cumberland sauce... all served with salad, homemade chips and homemade coleslaw....delightful !!

I visited here in April when I was down from Glasgow with friends staying in the area. We stopped at here for dinner as it was large enough to accommodate our party of 10 people. I ordered to Cow Pie which was delicious. If you visit make sure you order their chips with your dinner. These were the best chips I have tasted in a long time. Service was quick and the staff were really friendly. Don't miss out.

Called in after reading other reviews, great service and fantastic homemade, hot food. Would definitely recommend, there are lots of dark, old man pubs in Cockermouth, but this was light and airy with a bistro feel to it. Try the food, you won't be disappointed.

Went with family for a meal. I hadn’t been to the Brown Cow in years, and what can I say other than I didn’t recognise the place. Gone is the drab, dark, gloomy interior, and in with the new, fresh, modern and clean look. We were seated quickly by the manager Jeff and had time to peruse the menu as our drinks were being ordered/served. The menu is varied, with a good choice of daily specials. We opted for the garlic mushroom starter and pate starter, both were delicious and presented nicely. Mains were the 12 oz sirloin special and a Cajun chicken. The chicken was cooked to perfection, lovely and moist, served with home made chips, peas and dips. The steak was not 12 oz, it was much bigger and beautifully cooked served with onion rings, mushrooms, vine tomatoes, home made chips and coleslaw…..none of us had room for dessert. We were unhurried, and the staff were very attentive without being over bearing. We will definitely be visiting again.

Visited the Brown Cow today with my Wife and Son. The food was first class, you could tell that good quality products are used. I had the cow pie, and you would have thought there was half a cow in it (loads of meat with a nice pastry top) My wife had scampi and my son had the Cumberland ring complete with egg/onion rings/black pudd/mushrooms etc. And don't forget the home made chips. All served by polite friendly staff. Keep it up Mr Shields your doing a grand job.

Perfect stop for a coffee break - the view over the lake with bird feeders in front was great. The chairs in the lounge were very comfortable - best decaf coffee I have had. Looked at the menu and it was a shame that only a coffee stop. Did have a taste of the local beers!!

Walked from Keswick centre to Nichol End Marina. A lovely walk but was glad when I arrived at the marina cafe. Roger (jolly Roger) welcomed me in and was so helpful and friendly. It was quiet as the season is coming to an end. I had an oat milk coffee and a raisin sticky toffee scone. It was so big! Put half in a bag to take home. Plenty of choice of scones all fresh and looking delicious. Prices were so reasonable. Roger then gave me a ride in his boat across Derwent Water. He’s such a nice man. It made my day to find a gem of a place. Would def recommend if in the area. Will return and try out the boating/canoeing etc next year.

The best dog friendly cafe in the lakes. Gorgeous food and the warmest welcome. This is our go to place when walking in the north lakes. All of the food always hits the spot but the cakes are just gorgeous!
