We were staying in Allonby and found the Cross Quays in Maryport, just down the road. Staff were very friendly, food was cooked fresh in front of me, and was piping hot and delicious. Very reasonable prices and quick, polite service. They weren't taking card payments when we visited, so maybe make sure you have cash. But the Fish and Chips, Scampi and Chips, and mushy peas were delicious and in very generous portions - exactly what we needed after a big walk in the Lakes. Thank you!

Despite mixed reviews, we thought we would give it a go. There was a big que (good sign). Waited 10-15mins for our fish to be cooked to order. We had 2 fish and chips & 1 mushy peas. They were the greasiest fish and chips I have ever had. It was a decent portion but the amount of oil was ridiculous, it could have gone through 10 sheets of paper wrapping. The mushy peas were taken out of the fridge and heated in the microwave and were congealed and unappetising so went in the bin. The inside of the shop doesn’t look like it has been touched in 30 years. Instead of changing the signage it has bits of paper stuck over the price changes. I was about dizzy taking in all the info as signs everywhere. Cost us £23 for 2 chippy teas and 2 cans.

Decided to try again after a very disappointing experience last time when everything was really greasy and swimming in fat. Unfortunately this time was even worse. Oil soaked through both wrappers, had to try and dab excess oil off with kitchen roll. Had to leave batter and half the chips as they were just inedible soaked in fat. I live locally and this used to be a great place for fish and chips but I won't be back for a third attempt as this was an expensive disappointment rather than a treat.

This is hard for me to write because the two lovely ladies behind the counter were so welcoming and charming. However, their good humour and Cumbrian wit can't make up for the fact that this place appears to have seen better days. Most of the signage has been amended or crossed out with hand written notices saying "Cash Only" and items re-priced with marker pen. As to the fish and chips: We ordered two lots of cod (no haddock) and chips. The batter was soft and oily and the chips slightly undercooked. I couldn't finish mine. Maybe this was just an off day - I hope so, because I would dearly love to come back in the future and try the food as is described in previous comments.

Well next time I wouldn't mind some fish with my bones. Both mine and the wife's fish every mouthful had more than one bone?? I mean I've had fish and chips all over the uk and these have to be the worst. Even the chips were cold and weird. Really put off the "extra large" fish and left half of it. Part of it was burnt as well like the fish had been laid on the element that was heating the fryer. The fish didn't even seem that fresh either. almost like it had been sat there a month. I've been to hundreds of chip shops and takeaways in the country with work and tend to give a feedback to a trending food reviewer. The establishment - Clean, Well respected. Lady served me was polite. Anyway, the food I ordered fish and chips as standard. It's hands down one of the best, nar it's the best. The fish was battered in the nicest batter I've ever tasted, so light and had seasoning to it, the fish was a nice fillet that flaked off perfectly. The flavours can't be matched anywhere in this country. The chips are cooked perfectly, light and fluffy. This chip shop should be teaching others how to make perfect fish and chips. Well done 👍

I was working on renovating a friend's classic, wooden-hulled yacht over in the boat yard, in Maryport and the urge grabbed hold of me to have some chips.. Anyway, I went in to this uber quaint chip shop, with its narrow ordering area and was greeted by the old dears who were busy serving and frying away, the customers were all locals, clearly. Once I bit into the crispy, but not too crispy outer to release the inner light and fluffy tato it was CHIP HEAVEN.. Hadn't tasted chips this good, except from Rainey's in Donaghadee, Northern Ireland.. Superb fish and chips, always better for being by the seaside.! I'd noticed they sold homemade preserves to raise money for charity, so I bought Damson jam and fruit and real whiskey flavoured marmalade. My daughter agreed with me that the Damson jam was perfection. My wife is a preserve aficionado and says, 'It is THE VERY BEST MARMALADE EVER!' So much so that I'm getting in contact to try and get some shipped over to 'Norn Iron'...! I really, really hope you get a meal as delicious as mine were each time I went there.

After reading a few reviews and having great weather on our holidays in Forest Views holiday park we set off to Maryport and decided to have fish and chips from here as we had our dog with us. On entry we were asked if we wanted anything cooking, we said two large fish and chips. I waited 25 mins in the queue even though there was only 4 people in front. There were locals in the shop whose language was very bad C*** and F*** and T*** were used whilst talking to the fish fryer, yet the fish fryer did not ask the local to curb her language. The lady who served me was lovely and polite. After getting my food we decided to sit outside and eat them. The fish were absolutely drenched in fat in the very thick batter which was off putting (even tried soaking the fat up with my tissues). We got large fishes but they were just to the size of a standard anywhere else. On eat the fish which was skinned, we got bone after bone after bone, so we threw them away. The chips were ok. The bread buns were beautiful. Not sure why they were discussing today and I never complain I tried waiting in the queue to complain but we had to get back to the car which was away away and therer wasn't much time on the ticket left Sorry just been honest about the food

Thought we would give this place a try as we saw it when coming back from Lodore Falls a few weeks ago and thought location was good. Booked Sunday lunch for 2 adults and 2 teenagers as a pre-Christmas family lunch out. On arrival no one greeted us and we waited in line at the bar to be told, not shown to, which one our table was and to come back to the bar to order. This is fine but at hotel restaurant I would expect staff to come and take our order - main course Sunday lunch £24.95, burgers the kids had £21.95 so not cheap. Inn on the Lake Glenridding for example is less expensive and far superior in location, class, service and food quality. I ordered roast beef and when it arrived I actually got lamb - no problem mistakes happen - but it did mean i had to wait for it to be replaced whilst the rest of my family ate their meals. When beef arrived it was dried out, as if heated under a grill. No one checked on us during the meal but asked if everything was ok when they came to clear. I told them my beef wasn't great - half of it uneaten - and they said i should have told them and they would have replaced. Fine, but bearing in mind i had already waited for it to be replaced once and eaten after others had finished i didn't really want to go for round 3. My meal was removed from the bill but the experience for a family lunch out was spoilt. We were in the restaurant area that doesn't allow dogs but close to the open doors to the dog friendly area - I love dogs but the smell coming through wasn't pleasant from time to time, especially when eating. Generally i think it is expensive and disappointing for what it is, pub type service and food at restaurant prices. £9.50 for puddings for example is excessive for the environment. A shame as location is great to stop for lunch if walking around Derwentwater but I wouldn't recommend based on pour experience today. As a final comment the staff did seem genuinely apologetic.

I visited Oilys with family and just after the meals were served my brother had taken ill. One member of staff in particular was so helpful and attentive. Part way through the meal we had to leave to take my brother home and the same lady offered to box up all our meals for us as we had only started. Excellent service. The meals were delicious and it is just a shame we had to leave early. Luckily my brother is okay and we will have to go back sometime for a better experience.
