Lovely traditional country pub with great food and great service. My daughter and I visited last week and had a really nice meal. Portions were huge and the food was delicious. Would definitely recommend.

Good food, nice location. Service was prompt and friendly. Spacious carpark. Would recommend that you book in advance as it's in front of a caravan park.

My wife's fish and chips really nice. I had lamb plus black pudding plus Yorkshire, mash and cheese. I love all those things but they just do not mesh well together. Also the peas and carrots in the mix plus peas and carrots as served veg is just lazy. Nice folk and decent if expensive pub though

So disappointed. We'd visited previously and enjoyed a meal but didn't even get to order this time as they said they had stopped selling food from the menu at 5pm despite the board outside clearly stating 8:30pm. They advised that this was because they had a festival on. We'd phoned earlier to book a table for 7 (plus 3 dogs) and we're given a time of 4:15 to sit down. Fout of (plus 2 dogs) arrived for 4:15 with the other 3 arriving very shortly after. We were handed menus and a drink order was taken but when we approached the bar to order (as nobody had come to us) we were advised that food was no longer being served. Having paid for the drinks, I asked to speak to a supervisor and was advised that they thought we were a "walk in" and not a booking. We won't be coming back.

A nice little pub with friendly attentive staff. We had a meal here Saturday and they were kind enough to fit us in as we hadn't booked. The homemade chips were amazing, and I'd highly recommend the surf and turf burger 😋

We visit Lorton normally once per year and book into this pub for meals almost every night. It is extremely dog friendly and the food is delicious - home cooked, great quality and generous portions. The service is always good and accommodating. Can highly recommend.

Really friendly pub, the food was homemade and a good portion. I had the lamb with black pudding which was delicious. I would definitely reckonmend the pub to my friends, such great atmosphere, attention to detail and a friendly atmosphere. It's a 5 star from me.

Best sunday lunch I've had in a longtime great service and proper home cooked food will call in again whenever I'm in the area.

We came here around two weeks ago… We had just finished our afternoon up Haystacks and were looking for somewhere to stop, to refuel our hangry selves. We came across this place along the way - I’m so glad we did. I had the beef shin with leek mash from the specials menu. Wow, it was fresh, delicious, plentiful and such good value. The sauce was insanely good - I really want the recipe to recreate it at home 😉. The boys had burger, and the dirty dog hot dog with pulled pork and steak. Huge portions, no complaints. The staff were attentive and friendly, and drinks were a reasonable price - dog friendly too. Shame it’s over five hours away - see you again on another trip. I didn’t take a photo unfortunately, I was too busy devouring it; but here’s a picture of the beautiful view from Haystacks.

Sunday lunch was the best I've had locally, was hot and plenty of it. Highly recommended

My entire family really enjoyed this venue. The food was simply amazing and some of the best i've had in a long time. The service was also fantastic and I would recommend this place to everyone.

Walked in at 15:13 after cycling 25 miles, I asked if they were still serving food and the answer was no, they stopped serving food at 15:00, they said they have shut everything off. Fair enough, I understand that, so had a pint and a packet of crisp, 45 minutes later I walked through to find both the bar staff just about to tuck into burger and chips! They need to eat, I understand that, but it's very frustrating to be lied to about shutting the kitchen down, won't be coming here again!

What a cracking place, the staff are lovely. I stayed for the night in my camper, they have a great campsite, quiet and in a good location. With good food, warm and welcoming atmosphere and I will definitely be back, for a longer time next time. Thanks for a great stay 👍🏻

Ordered the black bean and sweat corn chilli. No black beans, no sweet corn. Not chilli. Very bad. I told the waitress and asked if I had been served something else in error. She failed to come back to me. I went and asked her. Avoiding eye contact she said I'd been served correctly. Really rude. Also, what I was given was as horrid.

Absolutely cracking pub perfect after a hard day on the fells and very dog friendly, will definitely be back.

We were a family of 5 adults and 4 chilren. The staff were very friendly and attentive, nothing was any trouble for them. The food was exceptional, the 3 steak pies were fresh and full of steak, with lots of veg. Grandsons had the stacked burgers, so much differant layers they striuggled to eat it all, granddaughter had lasagne and salad, freshly made with adequate sauce. The desserts were hot and delicious, maybe a little expensive. Drinks some alcholic included, came to £179, which I feel was a good buy for a delicious meal

Unfortunately we got stuffed into a table in the corner, this was after struggling to find anywhere to park! Unfortunately car park had a few campervan badly parked on it!

Parking and toilets as well as a fabulous Sunday Lunch. Great with or without a good walk.

A great place just 5 minutes from where we stayed in Lorton valley. Having just arrived at our cottage that evening we hadn't booked a table but the staff were fantastic in getting us seated. Our only negative, and it's a piffling one, is that because we didn't book, the table we were given was at the far end of the pub away from all the atmosphere. The beef & ale pie with thick cut, crunchy chips was incredible. Definitely recommended. Very friendly staff, great selection of ales (go for the Cumberland if, like me, you enjoy blonde ale) and seriously good food.

We stayed at the campsite in our campervan for 3 nights, overall the stay was very enjoyable. The pitches are good size, hard standing, and more or less level ground. We also ate in the pub one night, it was good food and good service, can't complain. The only letdown was the toilet block. It seriously needs attention. The biggest issue is that there is only one shower in the gents and one in the women's, and these are only divided from the rest of the toilet facility by a shower curtain. No locks! Other issues are; - missing toilet seat - toilet doors hard to close(when you do mange to close them, good luck opening them again as no internal handle) - mouldy/damp room - quite dirty One other issue is that the only washing machine is located in the women's toilet block. What are solo male campers supposed to do? Especially given there are no locks in the showers. Would probably not stay again until the toilet block has been addressed.

Lovely quiet pub with a fab beer tap line up (anywhere with Neck Oil and Moretti will get my seal of approval) and really tasty food. We had the Shin Beef and Beef Pie. Highly recommend if you’re in the area.

Long wait staff not very attentive gave up waiting in the end for dessert menu so left our table wasn't serviced need training I had lasagna tasted like cottage pice bacon chops dry no sauce

We came here in the first day of our week in the lakes. Lovely warm Welcome nice wine and a delicious roast. Nice and hot and loads of tender beef.

Great campsite but don't answer their phone and don't reply to answerphone messages. Absolute joke.

Food & service good until I found a long dark hair in the middle of my chicken pie. Staff insinuated it could be mine, despite having curly and blonde hair. Had to ask them to remove the meal from the bill but they weren’t hugely keen. Stayed in the campsite out the back in a camper, pitches fine but toilets weren’t great (even for a campsite) and the one shower was very mouldy - Also only secure with an old curtain, no lock or door. Numerous dogs off lead (despite signs saying on lead at all times) barking constantly and worrying our (on - lead) dog. Smells of decaying animal when the wind blows by the pitches top end of field. All in all we won’t be returning, shame as we came on a friends recommendation.

Had a day round Buttermere and Crummock water and needed somewhere to eat and drink we stumbled on a pub in Low Lorton nearby. It was very busy as there was a 3 day music festival on. The staff allowed us to park up our camper in their field at the back of the pub for the night with toilet and shower facilities. The views were amazing of the mountains surrounding. We had a great day and night, with plenty of dri ks and met some really nice people. Im sure we will be back . Thankyou.

I've given 3 stars as I used the camp site, pub deserves 4 stars. Food good service good a lack of brown or dark ale at the time I visited. Pitches a little small for MH and awning. The biggest disappointment is the toilet block. Only 1 shower and that would look better without the mold. 2 urinals and 2 toilets 1 without a seat. Just needs a bit more love, I'll use it again but use my own facility's.

Love this place!.. first came here a year before we were lucky enough to move to the lakes, it’s our ‘go-to’ Sunday lunch, the best around.. and we’ve tried them all… Staff are lively, attentive and friendly - nothing is any bother.. and the food is immense and delicious.. highly recommend it.. 👍

Stayed here at the campsite behind the pub, such a lovely well kept site with fantastic views. The food at the pub was exceptional, we had to waddle out of there our plate was so full! We will definitely be back....Thank you and well done!

It was a random find as we’re staying in campside nearby. We’ve asked for impossible it they made it possible. Very happy with service, kids loved it and we enjoyed the live music too!

We had the steak and the ravioli for mains. They were full of flavour and truly delicious. The staff were very really friendly and extremely helpful. Would definitely recommend if you are in and around the area. 😃

Yes, you might wait longer than 10 minutes for food but it's so worth it. Freshly cooked, home made, delicious and huge portions. The service is all at the table and the dessert menu is epic. Highly recommend but you need to book!

Not a good first impression, we were initially ignored when standing at the bar, whilst others around us were being served. But, once seated in the cosy bar with a lovely atmosphere our experience changed: the food was quickly served, was excellent and the portions were enormous ( only 1 in 4 off us managed).

Wir waren hier für eine Nacht, das Buchen im Voraus war unkompliziert. Der Platz ist sehr idyllisch gelegen. Ein Stern Abzug für die Toiletten / Dusche, aber das ist nur mein persönliches Empfinden. Ich empfehle den Campingplatz uneingeschränkt weiter.

Loved it - both my starter and the Sunday roast I had was proper home cooking done well (none of this fancy gastropub stuff) and the local ale was great. A very nice old style country pub.

Top pub. Good base menu with additional specials board. Decent drinks selection and nice, friendly staff. Will be back for definite.

I ordered fish and chips it was frozen fish and chips, and tried to tell me it was fresh (why lie when I can tell) lasagne was ok, kids meal basic. Could cook better myself at home. Don’t think they have a real chef they just cook it themselves. Long wait over 35 mins. Very poor, won’t be back felt it was a waste of £50.

Given all the positive reviews, we were really keen to book this place for a special occasion. We tried phoning to book a table for a large group well in advance but no answer every single time (tried calling on numerous occasions at different times of day). I also tried to email and sent a message on their online message system. This was well over a month ago and I’m still waiting to hear back from both. Very disappointing but luckily managed to book elsewhere! If you want to book for a large group or for a special occasion, I’d avoid trying as you’ll be disappointed!

Went here for fathers day was lovely food and dad's had enjoyed the lamb it was tasty and so was the beef sadly yorkshire puds need a bit more crisping up soggy in middle and the sweets were lovely dad's appreciated the cheesecake it's their fav thanks again another lovely meal here recommend here for a drink and natter with friends keep up the good work staff excellent place xxxx

Review based on experience of trying to book a table for a group on a special occasion. Multiple attempts via phone and website but no response. The phone is never answered ( multiple calls at different times of day and night). Online message app - no response. Just ignorance. Thankfully found a better alternative.

Situated in a glorious scenery tables outside in garden too had a lovely dinner with a large group of us and even though family were late which was unfortunate the meal was delicious and they worked it out so it wasn't a problem would definitely recommend

A very good pub,we decided to camp there,good price at a tenner,and plenty of pitches,probably could do with the toilet block updating, only one shower !! Great selection of ales,wainwright my choice and was beautiful, ordered a mixed grill and it was excellent a really good portion and piping hot,my mate had gammon and again was excellent and a great portion, the staff worked extremely hard,we will definitely be back

Managed to book a table last minute. Great food, nice and welcoming staff. We enjoyed our meal sat in comfortable surroundings and for us great that it is doggy friendly. We will be back when we next visit the area.

Not too bad, we only had deserts as they were fully booked (both days) and they take bookings for the next day After ordering from the board they came back to inform us that one of our items had sold out but what we did get was very good and generous portions Unfortunately ordering at the bar was a similar experience, they did have our first choice or second choice The staff were fine but reminded us and other customers that they needed the tables by a certain time which was fine but for someone popping in this makes you feel like you are not welcome but we finished on time so no issues The Wheatsheheaf is fine enough but I feel does not warrant 5 stars

Visited on a busy Saturday night glad we booked as it was full. The staff are friendly and very efficient. The food is amazing and superbly cooked whilst it’s not the cheapest it is incredibly tasty. I chose from the specials which was bacon chops...

Good food and a good atmosphere

Visited here on the first day of our holiday after 4 hours of driving and same of walking. Busy Friday night but we were accommodated with no issues. Advised there would be a 20 minute wait but it wasn't that long. Staff were extremely friendly and helpful. Food tasty and good sized portions but bit a tad expensive for "pub grub" at £15 - £20 for a main course. Disappointed with desserts - overwhelming amount to cream on both - the banoffee "pie" was just banana, toffee sauce and cream🤔. Good, local pub who's staff are a real credit👍

Lovely and friends staff, plenty of options for gin and have a wide selection of draughts and beers. We didn't have food but other peoples looks really good and well presented! Would eat here next time!

The food was pretty good when it came but unfortunately the experience was marred by extremely slow service. The pub wasn’t that busy but it took 30 mins to take our order and another 40 minutes before the food arrived. We felt we had been forgotten about and the food was only served after my husband went to the bar for the second time and asked when it was coming!
