At the time we got there we have been told the table was only available for 1:30hrs which would have been fine although it took 1:15hrs for our mains to be served, the excuse was that the sunday roast ingredients were prepared in advance and the other plates needed to be prepared from scratch, information which was not informed to us upon arrival. We were four people and only one of us had the sunday roast which was served cold and the beef was hard, no steak knifes provided. Giving all the time it took for our food to arrive and we had a train to catch, I asked for the bill and the waiter kept walking around in circles, I had to ask three times for the bill and twice to bring the card machine to pay, as the food arrived extremely late we have asked for take away boxes otherwise we would miss our train and we have been giving such rubbish boxes that were coming apart and unfolding before we left the restaurant. Absolutely do not recommend this place, unpleasant meal with waiters asking every 10min if we want to order more drinks and no sign of the food. I must say once more that the food took 1:15hrs to come and the sunday roast was cold because, as the waiter said, the ingredients for it were prepared in advance, if the other options take longer why not tell the customers or remove it from the Sunday menu? Probably the sunday roast was done for a long time awaiting for the others plates to be cooked. We came to this place thinking that it would be a fine experience on a Sunday lunch and was an absolute disappointment.

Amazing food in a really amazing pub. Had the roast and a sticky toffee pudding, both were great. If I were picky and had to say something that could be improved: the place didn’t look packed, but the staff were running around like something was on fire. Still, great experience, for sure will return when I visit Edinburgh again.

We literally just got engaged and hopped into the first location we found labelled as "pub" on maps after dropping off the rental car. When we cheerfully had a call with my mom (trust me, there was no yelling or crying, we spoke at normal tone, plus we sat in a corner next to the door on high chairs, bar area), we were asked to be quiet. Behind us was a couple with a barking dog, and they were told nothing (they were super nice though, and we didn't mind). Needless to say, we left immediately after our celebratory drink. This place is a total mood ruiner and definitely would never go back nor recommend. Other places where we celebrated were super happy for us, gave multiple drinks for free or discounts. Maybe The Broughton can also learn how to be a bit more friendly and not push away customers? Especially when they are in a special moment and planning to spend and celebrate.

Leaving this review as the pub emailed me asking for one. Roast beef was good. More gravy needed. Croquettes also good. Fish and chips average — fish overcooked; about half the size I'd expect. Focaccia was poor, not really focaccia. Doughy, compact and heavy. No herbs or salt. Also served with butter rather than oil. I asked for olive oil and was surprised when your poor member of staff said there wasn't any. Must be the only kitchen in the UK without olive oil in it? It was laughable. Amazing. Only one vegetarian option on the mains menu.

After another visit to the Broughton with friends I had to let everyone know how good this place is. The food was a clear 10 ot of 10 for all of us. I would recommend the Chicken Kiev or any fish dish. The sweet menu is always a treat and the Angus strawberry panna cotta was only one of the highlights. I have been coming here for a few years and always been delighted with our meal . The GF options always help when we go out . Staff are friendly and very pleasant to deal with. It's the genteel twin of the Barony, over the road. Smaller portions, beautifully presented from a compact menu. The staff are present and attentive. It's a restaurant that looks like a pub, while the Barony is a pub that's just serving chunky, popular meals a slice up market from Wetherspoons. The Broughton is calmer, quieter, and the chips are better.

A+++. Being from San Francisco, where creative culinary nights out at fine dining is an essential element of our culture, The Broughton rings every bell and then some. The atmosphere is replete with lovely touches, gleaming copper beer taps and design flourishes everywhere, but never pretentious. The service was fantastic as only the Scots do, which is to say--always at the table without ever feeling like they're hovering nearby, delighting in the savory offerings and options, serving a FINE stout, recommending great whiskeys, and the food --well look at the collage and pictures everyone has shared. All of it dispels the long dead myth that UK food is bland...this is delicious fare, fantastically plated, with awesome sauces and great taste combos. Highly highly recommended.

We wanted to eat well this evening. So we found this place and it had great reviews. And a Michelin nod too! We were quite early for dinner but they were gracious and seated us. E shared the aisle of Wight Tomato. It was a big heirloom tomato with balsamic marinated baby red onions, on a bed of cheddar cheese. Not bad. The huge tomato was plump, meaty, and juicy. I’m not sure about the cheddar accompaniment. I would have preferred a stracchiatella. But maybe the chef wanted to showcase local cheese. For our mains, we had the boarder lamb with a properly roasted eggplant, crisp potato, and some yogurt on the side infused with some mint. The lamb was juicy and done perfectly. There was a belly portion that was amazingly tender and flavorful. The pork loin was also tender and had marinated apricots to accompany it. There were strips of lacinato kale to contrast with the sweet vinegary sauce. We ordered some Italian Montepulciano to go with our mains. It made for a satisfying meal altogether. Unfortunately, we were too full to have dessert. Another time!

Service was stellar, the food quality was amazing and the flavor profiles on the dishes were perfectly balanced. for our last night in edinburgh, our party was looking for a good old pub meal. unfortunately, we had not anticipated that england were playing serbia at 7:30pm when we had made a booking at the queens head, and so that turned out to be a non-starter as our table was directly under the speaker which, when we arrived, was blasting out the standard pre-game commentary. unable to hear ourselves or the waiter, and having little interest in the game, we abandoned our booking and wandered the streets around st andrew square. sadly, we arrived at the abbotsford only to find that their kitchen was closed that day. thinking that we were going to be eating sandwiches from tesco for dinner, my wife googled around a bit, and found that the broughton had a table, and could fit us in before the kitchen closed at 8:30pm. experiencing the broughton was an excellent and unexpected find on our last night in edinburgh. the food was exceptional, and our wait staff were young and still very polite and so very hospitable. i could bang on about the food, but the menu is updated regularly, and is seasonal, so just trust that the kitchen is solid, the service is sound, and while the olive trees may not be real, everything else about the broughton is. it might not have your run of the mill pub meal, but we it was so good that the three of us did not care. six thumbs up!!

We are locals and we went on a Thursday, early evening for a casual, midweek supper. What a lovely place and what a warm and friendly welcome from Josh, who clearly loves his job and values his customers. Irene was our waitress and she was extremely helpful, considerate and efficient throughout. We hope we will be lucky enough to have her to serve our table next time we go. The customer experience and level of service was excellent. Irene checked on us regularly and Josh took the time to come over to us at the end of our meal, to ask how we had found everything and to note any feedback. We felt he was genuinely invested in making sure we had a lovely evening. It makes all the difference when you are made to feel like a welcome, valued guest. We had the leek croquettes and shared the sirloin for two, which came with two portions of chips and a Caesar Salad. I had the forced rhubarb dessert and my husband had the lemon madeleines with ice-cream. It was all perfectly cooked and absolutely delicious. The house Prosecco was a particularly lovely one. Disappointing and overpriced. We used to go to the Broughton quite regularly and recommended it to friends as, although it was always on the pricey side, we felt it was worth it for the quality of food and the service. However, today I was very disappointed. I’m vegetarian and the only main course option was roasted courgette. We waited 40 minutes for our food although we were literally the only customers in the restaurant. My dish consisted of one very small courgette cut in half and served with a couple of courgette ribbons, 3 small dollops of dips, 2 cherry tomatoes cut in half and two green olives cut into slices. It was totally insubstantial and not at all filling. The taste was also quite bland. I found it very overpriced at £18. My husband had his usual feather blade beef which he enjoyed and the service remained good. However, my negative opinion is not based only on today’s visit but also on several other visits over the past year. Gradually, over this period, every dish I liked was removed from the menu. It started with the disappearance of the chocolate délice, which was quickly followed by the leek and cheese croquettes and the pearl barley risotto and then today I discovered the sticky toffee pudding had gone. When I mentioned this to the waiter he said that many customers were lamenting its loss and it might be brought back in November. I cannot understand why dishes which are so popular with customers are removed. I do appreciate the need for change and innovation and also accept that taste is very subjective. This is why, although I have not enjoyed any of the vegetarian options since the risotto, I have not left any bad reviews and have continued to try what was on offer. However, today the lack of substance to the vegetarian dish, coupled with its price, has propelled me to action. I do hope that the chef will take note of these comments and significantly improve the vegetarian option in the future.

We made an impromptu visit this afternoon (Saturday 9th September) without a booking. Greeted by Josh who explained we had arrived towards the end of the brunch menu and the kitchen was about to switch menus and gave us the opportunity to have either. We opted for brunch. We both ordered The Broughton Breakfast and all I can say is wow. Visually, it looked like a good breakfast but once we started eating we couldn’t get over how great every single little element was. It’s not often we take a second to stop eating and chat about how great a tomato tastes!! The coffee was also excellent, I’d go as far to say probably the best Cappucino I’ve had in Scotland, and I’ve had my fair share. All washed down with a lovely glass of Chilean Chardonnay. Josh made sure to check on us and even offered to switch down the music for our sleeping toddler, nothing seemed too much to ask. Also served by a female waitress who was also great but didn’t catch her name. Food, Drink, Service and Venue all a firm 10/10. We will definitely return.

From the moment we made our restaurant reservations online, The Broughton in Edinburgh promised an unforgettable dining experience—and it certainly delivered. The charming atmosphere coupled with mouth-watering dishes made for an exceptional evening out. The stylish yet cozy setting immediately welcomes you, creating the perfect ambience for a night with family or friends. The decor strikes a fine balance between modern elegance and traditional comfort, setting the tone for a memorable meal. Service was attentive without being intrusive. The staff clearly know their menu well and were more than happy to offer recommendations, ensuring a smooth dining experience from start to finish. The highlight of the evening was undoubtedly the food. I opted for the Slow-cooked Beef Feather Blade accompanied by roast garlic mash and roasted courgette. The beef was a marvel—cooked to perfection, it melted in the mouth, and the accompanying jus added just the right amount of zest. The mash was nothing short of amazing. Creamy and rich, it stands as some of the best mashed potato I've ever had. This dish wasn't just a meal; it was a comforting reminder of family favorites, yet elevated to a whole new level. We split two desserts, and they were equally stunning. The Vanilla Pannacotta with Scottish strawberry and doughnut was a delightful dance of textures and flavors. The Scottish Raspberry Mille-Feuille with peach sorbet was equally divine, providing the perfect sweet end to a fantastic meal. The Broughton lives up to the hype, delivering an extraordinary dining experience that combines the homeliness of traditional food with the elegance of fine dining. Do yourself a favor and book a table here. You won't be disappointed.

My vegetarian girlfriend remarked on the lack of substance to the one veggie main, but enjoyed the starter and dessert. However on my carnivorous part: the service was friendly and fast; food was creative and solid; the restaurant was smart yet cozy. Wonderful time considerd, highly recommend to the non veggie. (4 stars on service due to the slightly slow taking of our bill, beyond that it was wonderful 😊 )

The Sunday Roast was delightful! Dogs are allowed, but only at the bar area. Ours had a nice snooze.

Amazing place if you are in hurry or need a little brake on your adventure in Edinburgh. The people working here are super friendly and the prices are good. They have soup of the day if you need something warm and great selection of tasty pies (chicken and mushroom is my favorite). Totaly worth visit at least once!

Went as part of a work-event at Christmas. The hall was stunning, big fireplaces and stunning chandeliers. The food was very very good and a fair portion. Service was prompt and polite and extra considerate for our colleague who can't have peanuts, reassuring him that they checked his meal each time. Food was served at a lovely temperature. I'd love to visit this place as a typical patron. Also, it's a treat to be so far up the Royal Mile as late as we were. Even though it was Christmas time, the street was fairly quiet and Edinburgh old-town looks lovely (ignoring the road works!)
