Located at the lower end of Broughton Street, The Broughton offers a welcoming mix of a pub and dining experience. As you enter, there’s a bar area to the left, leading into a cozy restaurant space with low lighting, green banquette seating, mustard-colored chairs, and exposed stone walls enhanced by subtle uplighting. The menu is refined and selective, featuring around ten starters, five mains, four sides, and four desserts. The cocktails were excellent. I tried the 25, a house special with cognac and Demerara, served elegantly in a long champagne flute—an outstanding choice. The Negroni was also well-executed. For the main course, the venison haunch was cooked to perfection, complemented by a rich sauce. The layered potato cube was a nice touch, and the Brussels sprouts with bacon were prepared in a unique, creamy style that worked well. Service was attentive, with a 10% service charge included in the bill. The overall ambiance was intimate and atmospheric, making it a great spot for a romantic meal or a relaxed evening with excellent food. A very positive experience.

We found this place almost by mistake, but it was a very fortunate mistake. The staff is absolutely amazing, always helpful and attentive. We had the homemade focaccia and the crisps as we had to wait 40 minutes for the pork chops , the focaccia was delicious and the pork was worth all the waiting, it comes with mashed potatoes and salad. We were very full, but could not say no to the dessert and I am so happy I had it. Absolutely great, highly recommended.

It's soaked in a lemon syrup and served w a very interesting chewy vanilla ice cream It's hard to find a decent Madeleine anywhere, so I greatly appreciate this Also it's said to be a bar but really it's a somewhat fancy restaurant

Very good lunch at this pleasant dining pub. In the kitchen, someone who clearly has skills, managing to confer some elegance to fundamentally reassuring and comforting dishes. Mains of cod and venison were very well cooked, starters of crab crumpets and Cheddar croquettes were delicious, while the desserts had ups and downs, but I would like to mention the madeleines which were definitely an up. The room is a mixture of pub atmosphere and cool elegance. Service was top from all three people with whom we interacted. Prices are reasonable.

After reading the reviews I was looking forward to Sunday lunch at the Broughton. I have to admit that the food was very good; however, I do have a couple of minor complaints. I booked Sunday lunch at 2 pm and the reservation confirmed that the table was confirmed for 2-4 pm. Therefore, I was quite surprised when my friend and I were told at 3.20 pm that the table was required for another booking in 30 minutes. We asked that they could come back and remind us 5 minutes before they needed the table. At 3.25 a waiter came back and said we needed to move to the bar because the table was needed. When ordering the food I asked if that the sprouts that came with my roast chicken could be replaced with another vegetable, the answer was no - not possible? Really… is your portion control so exact that you cannot replace sprouts with green beans. To add insult to injury I asked for a Yorkshire pudding (not included with roast chicken) and they charged me £1.50 for it 🤣. What costs more sprouts or a Yorkshire pudding!!!

Visited The Broughton on Sunday and tried their Sunday roast along with the focaccia to start which were both enjoyable. The roast was enjoyable, with the carrots and Yorkshire pudding being the standout elements on the plate. I also ordered the cauliflower cheese, though I found it had more roux than actual cheese which was a bit disappointing but overall a decent roast. A special mention to Dean for his exceptional service, and kudos to the rest of the staff for being so welcoming and pleasant.

At the time we got there we have been told the table was only available for 1:30hrs which would have been fine although it took 1:15hrs for our mains to be served, the excuse was that the sunday roast ingredients were prepared in advance and the other plates needed to be prepared from scratch, information which was not informed to us upon arrival. We were four people and only one of us had the sunday roast which was served cold and the beef was hard, no steak knifes provided. Giving all the time it took for our food to arrive and we had a train to catch, I asked for the bill and the waiter kept walking around in circles, I had to ask three times for the bill and twice to bring the card machine to pay, as the food arrived extremely late we have asked for take away boxes otherwise we would miss our train and we have been giving such rubbish boxes that were coming apart and unfolding before we left the restaurant. Absolutely do not recommend this place, unpleasant meal with waiters asking every 10min if we want to order more drinks and no sign of the food. I must say once more that the food took 1:15hrs to come and the sunday roast was cold because, as the waiter said, the ingredients for it were prepared in advance, if the other options take longer why not tell the customers or remove it from the Sunday menu? Probably the sunday roast was done for a long time awaiting for the others plates to be cooked. We came to this place thinking that it would be a fine experience on a Sunday lunch and was an absolute disappointment.

We literally just got engaged and hopped into the first location we found labelled as "pub" on maps after dropping off the rental car. When we cheerfully had a call with my mom (trust me, there was no yelling or crying, we spoke at normal tone, plus we sat in a corner next to the door on high chairs, bar area like), we were asked to be quiet. Behind us was a couple with a barking dog, and they were told nothing (they were super nice though, and we didn't mind). Needless to say, we left immediately after our celebratory drink. This place is a total mood ruiner and definitely would never go back nor recommend. Other places where we celebrated were super happy for us, gave multiple drinks for free or discounts. Maybe The Broughton can also learn how to be a bit more friendly and not push away customers? Especially when they are in a special moment and planning to spend and celebrate.

Leaving this review as the pub emailed me asking for one. Roast beef was good. More gravy needed. Croquettes also good. Fish and chips average — fish overcooked; about half the size I'd expect. Focaccia was poor, not really focaccia. Doughy, compact and heavy. No herbs or salt. Also served with butter rather than oil. I asked for olive oil and was surprised when your poor member of staff said there wasn't any. Must be the only kitchen in the UK without olive oil in it? It was laughable. Amazing. Only one vegetarian option on the mains menu.

It's the genteel twin of the Barony, over the road. Smaller portions, beautifully presented from a compact menu. The staff are present and attentive. It's a restaurant that looks like a pub, while the Barony is a pub that's just serving chunky, popular meals a slice up market from Wetherspoons. The Broughton is calmer, quieter, and the chips are better.

A+++. Being from San Francisco, where creative culinary nights out at fine dining is an essential element of our culture, The Broughton rings every bell and then some. The atmosphere is replete with lovely touches, gleaming copper beer taps and design flourishes everywhere, but never pretentious. The service was fantastic as only the Scots do, which is to say--always at the table without ever feeling like they're hovering nearby, delighting in the savory offerings and options, serving a FINE stout, recommending great whiskeys, and the food --well look at the collage and pictures everyone has shared. All of it dispels the long dead myth that UK food is bland...this is delicious fare, fantastically plated, with awesome sauces and great taste combos. Highly highly recommended.

We wanted to eat well this evening. So we found this place and it had great reviews. And a Michelin nod too! We were quite early for dinner but they were gracious and seated us. E shared the aisle of Wight Tomato. It was a big heirloom tomato with balsamic marinated baby red onions, on a bed of cheddar cheese. Not bad. The huge tomato was plump, meaty, and juicy. I’m not sure about the cheddar accompaniment. I would have preferred a stracchiatella. But maybe the chef wanted to showcase local cheese. For our mains, we had the boarder lamb with a properly roasted eggplant, crisp potato, and some yogurt on the side infused with some mint. The lamb was juicy and done perfectly. There was a belly portion that was amazingly tender and flavorful. The pork loin was also tender and had marinated apricots to accompany it. There were strips of lacinato kale to contrast with the sweet vinegary sauce. We ordered some Italian Montepulciano to go with our mains. It made for a satisfying meal altogether. Unfortunately, we were too full to have dessert. Another time!

for our last night in edinburgh, our party was looking for a good old pub meal. unfortunately, we had not anticipated that england were playing serbia at 7:30pm when we had made a booking at the queens head, and so that turned out to be a non-starter as our table was directly under the speaker which, when we arrived, was blasting out the standard pre-game commentary. unable to hear ourselves or the waiter, and having little interest in the game, we abandoned our booking and wandered the streets around st andrew square. sadly, we arrived at the abbotsford only to find that their kitchen was closed that day. thinking that we were going to be eating sandwiches from tesco for dinner, my wife googled around a bit, and found that the broughton had a table, and could fit us in before the kitchen closed at 8:30pm. experiencing the broughton was an excellent and unexpected find on our last night in edinburgh. the food was exceptional, and our wait staff were young and still very polite and so very hospitable. i could bang on about the food, but the menu is updated regularly, and is seasonal, so just trust that the kitchen is solid, the service is sound, and while the olive trees may not be real, everything else about the broughton is. it might not have your run of the mill pub meal, but we it was so good that the three of us did not care. six thumbs up!!

We are locals and we went on a Thursday, early evening for a casual, midweek supper. What a lovely place and what a warm and friendly welcome from Josh, who clearly loves his job and values his customers. Irene was our waitress and she was extremely helpful, considerate and efficient throughout. We hope we will be lucky enough to have her to serve our table next time we go. The customer experience and level of service was excellent. Irene checked on us regularly and Josh took the time to come over to us at the end of our meal, to ask how we had found everything and to note any feedback. We felt he was genuinely invested in making sure we had a lovely evening. It makes all the difference when you are made to feel like a welcome, valued guest. We had the leek croquettes and shared the sirloin for two, which came with two portions of chips and a Caesar Salad. I had the forced rhubarb dessert and my husband had the lemon madeleines with ice-cream. It was all perfectly cooked and absolutely delicious. The house Prosecco was a particularly lovely one. The place is quite inviting, spacious, and nicely decorated. The service was friendly and attentive. Had a very nice glass of rioja and crab balls as a starter. They were crispy from outside and soft and creamy in the inside. The sauce was nice. But the taste itself was underwhelming. Then came the beef. The ox cheeck was extremely salty. The mash potatoes and the 🥕 were redundant. One thing I really enjoyed was the broccoli.

Don't let the pub-like exterior fool you, this is a fine restaurant, serving accomplished dishes. I was surprised by the small portion sizes, though. There's no indication, or advice to order a side. With that said, the food is exceptional. There just needs to a significant amount more of it, or some expectation setting from the outset.

Seriously good food. We had a wonderful chicken terrine and beautifully cooked venison. The short wine list is well thought out and the service was friendly and helpful. The best meal we had in a week in Edinburgh.

* A note on grades, I rate outwards from three stars. * The Broughton FAR exceeded expectations. Our party made a rookie mistake and didn't make reservations for Sunday roast, leading to a frantic search for a table. The manager at the Broughton squeezed us in early for what turned out to be one of the best meals we had in Edinburgh. Both the lamb and beef roasts were excellent, as were the drinks and desserts. Definitely worth a visit, just reserve in advance.

The first time I visited Café St Honoré I thought I’d wandered into late 19th Century Paris. I half-expected to see Toulouse Lautrec in a corner sipping absinthe. I noticed that the clientele seemed mainly to be local residents - always a good sign - but that business people and tourists were also welcome. The menu was brief and to the point. Dishes were seasonal and locally produced items, including drinks, were highlighted. Over a period of years I’ve visited many times and enjoyed consistently good cooking. This time, I chose the set lunch menu. On the day I visited, the menu sounded rather plain (Soup, Cottage Pie, Mousse) but I saw the opportunity to discover how much flavour this team could extract from modest ingredients. As usual, a plate of beautiful sourdough bread arrived shortly before my bowl of cauliflower and Lanark Blue cheese soup. The soup, made from simple ingredients, was outstanding. The vegetable must have been roasted very slowly, carefully and patiently to extract flavour of such depth. The velvety texture was complemented by a garnish of sweet, crunchy toasted hazelnuts. Comforting and satisfying, my two-hundred-mile round-trip to Edinburgh seemed worth it for this bowl of soup alone. A dish as straightforward and traditional as Cottage Pie needs no fancy embellishment and it wasn't given any. The pie was served in an individual gratin dish with a portion of sautéed green-leaf vegetables alongside. Once again, the modest menu description and simplicity of presentation could lull the diner into anticipating plain food. Every item on the plate was seasoned perfectly and the flavour of the pie's meat base had a gratifying depth. I felt beaten into submission. My homemade Cottage Pie doesn't come close to this! To finish the meal, another simply presented dish arrived: crème fraîche mousse with poached pear and a shortbread biscuit. The silky mousse expertly balanced richness with freshness and the fragrant, sweet pears complemented it very well. I tasted the biscuit and mused that this little piece of confection well represented the blended French and Scottish influences of this restaurant. Had I eaten this dish in France, I might have expected a Sablé biscuit on the side. Here, in Scotland's capital city, I enjoyed this national speciality made from a very short list of good quality ingredients. Accessibility: The dining room is at ground floor level. The toilet/washroom is on a slightly lower level a few steps down from the main cafe area. Prices: The daily set menu is priced at £25 for two courses and £32 for three at lunchtime. (£28.50 / £36.50 for evening service.) The menu which I would call A La Carte offers starters at £14 - £15, main courses ranging from £27 to £35, and desserts at £10 - £15. Wines are priced starting at £7.45 a glass and from around £30 a bottle. In Summary: The "Frenchness" of this cafe is not just about its decor. Classical French Cooking techniques are used in its kitchen. The atmosphere in the dining room is relaxed and the service friendly. Café St Honoré has adopted the French Bistrot mindset of people being there to enjoy the food and wine and not to stand on ceremony.

A bit late for a review however myself and my family where here in Feb during a visit for the six nations. It was my highlight of the trip (maybe not the highlight Ireland did win). The steak was superb. Excellently cooked. I’m going back to Edinburgh next February and can’t wait to come back to this restaurant
