Whenever in Manchester I go here. Just love this pub.

Another classic Manchester pub we had on our list To Do, good service, atmosphere, nicely busy. Crowd not bothered about anyone else but themselves having a pint, how a pub should be. Will come again with friends on another trip to Manchester.

Beautiful heritage pub. Friendly staff. Good pint of Guinness. Dogs welcome.

A true Pub in every sense, great selection of Whisky and Whiskey!

Once-great, but now a pale shadow of a classic boozer - from the surly bartender (5pm on Monday, Nov. 4 if that helps the mgmt) giving monosyllabic replies and listening to phone videos on loudspeaker. No soap in the loo, graffiti on the walls. Avoid.

The place is good old-fashioned pub, a real time capsule. The architecture and history is just fantastic. Not only that, the beer on offer is excellent too. A good choice and not too expensive. BUT:- The place is showing its years and while OK, could do with some TLC.

The inside of this pub is stunning. Friendly staff, quick service, and nice atmosphere.

Old school pub, inside is nicely done with small tables in little rooms. However had to send the first pint back as didn't taste right, then for the second pint the glass was covered in lipstick, clearly hadn't been washed. If you're a tourist worth nipping in, otherwise better pubs in the area.

A great pub. A very good pint of Guinness. A comment for the owners though, staff the place properly, the one young lad on was rushed off his feet but did great. The place was packed, you can clearly fund more staff, do so!

Proper, old school pub with a quirky layout. Ale selection was decent but let down by the choice of cider. Was very popular when we visited, so it can get quite loud at times.

Well loved and well used Manchester institution! Huge selection of whiskey, good selection of beers, friendly staff. Not much more one can ask for, really.

Called in for a drink as my husband wanted to come whilst we were in Manchester. Appreciate it’s a very old pub but it felt grubby. We went in one of the back rooms which smelt not sure what of. Seats all worn and ripped. Suppose some would characterful and old world charm. Not for me …..sorry

Fantastic pub with a bundle of history. Staff are superb, and they really know the history of the place with a great understanding. The atmosphere is excellent, and the quality of Ale is undeniable. Whiskey lovers paradise also.

Popped in for a quick pint yesterday evening and wasn’t disappointed. Great selection of beer in a pub full of character. I real find in City Center Manchester.

A sad day at what was one of my favourite bars in town, a proper pub. Walked in and a guy was explaining that he’d spoken to the owners about bringing groups of around 30 into the pub regularly. You’d think this would be seen as a bonus in this market but he was treated quite contemptuously by the barman. After this chap offered several solutions for sorting his request out the barman begrudgingly gave him a bar receipt and told him to write his email down and “he’d see what he could do”. We saw a sign offering shots and laughed between us about having Tequila Rose and the bar man said something along the lines of “if you’d said whisky I’d have felt better” which was bizarre. We ordered our beer and his response was “really? And I had high hopes for you two” followed by a sigh and a shake of the head! Seriously? I’ve never had my choice of drink criticised! We went outside, “beer garden” sadly neglected. Tables and chairs rotting, dirty glasses lying around which had clearly been there for some time. The place was nigh on deserted so no excuse. As for the toilets - beyond grim. One door didn’t close, the other had the remnants lying in the bowl. I know they’re not responsible for how their customers leave things but locks and toilet checks are surely simple housekeeping matters? We left and went to meet friends at The Refuge. After lunch one asked to go to the Briton. We returned. Asked for a pint (another shake of the head), a double vodka and tonic and a double gin and tonic. I asked for the gin to have a slice of lime a) because I prefer lime to lemon and b) so I could distinguish between them. There followed a lecture about how I have not followed tradition. That line should be in the vodka etc. and I’d chosen poorly! He then realised he’d poured singles so shoved another measure into each glass. No straw, no stir so we had to shove our fingers in to mix in the extra measure. £26.50 for this sterling service. I don’t need anyone, let alone someone who is a good 30 years younger than myself, telling me what I should drink and how I should drink it. He may well have “4 years hospitality experience” but you couldn’t tell (as a bar manager in a former life I could teach him a thing or two). He spoiled all our fond memories of this place in one afternoon. We won’t be back.

This place has gone seriously downhill. Looks unloved, seats ripped in the rooms off the bar. Also doesn't attract the ale crowd, as they hardly have any beers on these days. We were having a drink in one of the rooms when a woman, who I assume was the landlady, appeared down the stairs wearing next to nothing. Looked like she needed a good wash. Even one of the staff said she might like to put on a different pants if she was going to go behind the bar again. Not something you want to see when you're out for the evening. I don't know who runs this place but they need to have a good look at what is going on there. For such a beautiful heritage pub, it's quite sad to see the decline.

Great Pub with old furniture and great interior, well worth a visit

Run down pub with very average beer choice. It's a shame because not so long ago it was a top notch pub.

A fine old pub with impressive historical murals and a lovely traditional interior marred by sulky, surly service and a very poor selection of draught ales. Just about surviving on its reputation from Manchester's halycon Hacienda days. Needs to stop living on its reputation and up its game if it's going to survive.

I am interpreting "food" here to include "booze," which is what I had. This is a unique venue in Manchester and one of the best pubs in the country.

It was awhile since we had been to this historic Pub so a visit was long overdue. It was a really sunny day and we found out it had a beer garden so it became an easy decision. Set right next to the Gmex Arena it is a fascinating place and has changed very little over the years. it has an amazing selection of whiskeys and the battle of Peterloo took place just outside its front door! The pub itself is dripping in history but we went through the back to the beer garden which to be honest was a bit unloved. Glasses hasn't been collected for ages but it still made a nice place to sit in amongst the tower block and enjoy a cold one. They do a great range of drinks reasonable prices and the service was friendly and polite. Definitely worth a visit.

Lovely old fashioned pub with loads of character and good beer selection. Has a very traditional bar and two very distinctive back rooms with plenty of seating and a good atmosphere. Highly recommended.

Great pub not far from Deansgate, good selection of drinks, unusual lay out inside but its got loads of history, well worth a visit if you're in Manchester

Worst bar service I've experienced.

I've been in this pub several times on pub crawls decades ago when I lived in Manchester and loved the beers. Tonight, I am back in Manchester on business, so went in for a night cap. The staff were very welcoming and knowledgeable about all their malts. I had a very pleasant evening. Thanks chaps.

Great pub. One of the last traditional pubs in Manchester.

Wonderful traditional multiroom pub with fine beer and whisky range. Grade II listed. Sadly owners Heineken want to "regularise" it, threatening its individuality.

Historic pub. This place was open on the day of the Peterloo Massacre. It should be preserved just for that. In addition, and perhaps just vast pertinent, they serve great Guinness and have a great selection of whiskies. If you find yourself in sunny downtown Manchester, be sure to call in. You will get a welcome, a beer, and you can reach back over the past two centuries and feel the presence of those long lost days, orator Hunt, and the desire for free trade. A must.

Had a really good pint of Creme Bearlee

£5.50 a pint average for the city centre, lots of small rooms, and a small outside area.

One of the best, friendliest whisky bars I have been to. Alan is a real whisky lover and knows everything about them. The bar is full of rare independet bottlings and you can get very well priced tasting flights. Our few hours there went so fast drinking and talking about whisky I barely noticed it. Will come back for sure! Absolutely recommended!

Brilliant pub with a massive amount of history. Great range of cask beers. Sadly at risk because big business wants to throw the committed licensees out and mess with the place.

A truly amazing pub. Just down the street from The Peveril. Tons of history in here. Lots of unique drinking rooms. Front bar is isolated from the rest of the pub. There’s even a beer garden! Great draft and cask options and a lovely bar staff. Just can’t beat a place like this.

Authentic old British pub. No music blasting out, you can actually have a conversation with your friends or the other patrons. Massive selection of whiskies and good selection of ales. Bar staff are really friendly and remember your order on your second and subsequent rounds. Decent beer garden as well.

Impressive traditional pub with a very large whisky selection. Pub is of historic nature being fairly central to the Peterloo massacre in the 1800s. The pub's name recalls its use as an army recruiting venue, as do a set of murals inside the pub. The Peterloo Massacre happened nearby, and there are unconfirmed reports that some of the injured were brought into the pub and laid out on the bar to be treated

Alan, the landlord, was very welcoming and passionate about his pub he had been running for 12 years! I hope he gets to run it for another 20 years! Keep pubs open and don't let big enterprises take over the minnows!!! X

First thing coming to your (nose) mind as soon as we entered this pub: smells like piss. Honestly, during our entire stay the entire pub had a strong smell like piss. We've left the pub right after our (quick) beer.

We didn’t get to try the food but the drinks were good. For American Whiskey drinkers make sure you get the Blantons. The pour is incredibly reasonable compared to what it would run back in the US.

Whilst sat here with my wife the 2 male bar staff decided to very loudly discuss comparing c&ck sizes, i told them we could clearly hear them & one apologised & the other (he had green/ blue hair) didn't seam to like being told , he then preceded to discuss a conversation with a "john" over limes and repeating swearing loudly purely to try antagonise me.(he failed miserably).I've always loved the bp as it is a real a Manchester institution but this was quite a surprise on a Sunday evening

Traditional pub in the city centre. Decent selection of beers, service was excellent, landlord really friendly, and amazing selection of JD with some that are exclusive to this pub. Definitely worth a visit.

Brilliant traditional pub, massive choice of ales and always busy. If like me, you love pubs and you're in the area, you really must come and visit this one, it's a piece of inner city pub perfection.

Visited the pub as the starting point of a Mystery Adventure tour of Manchester. It's a 'proper pub', as described. Crowded, and friendly, with the original wooden bar, including the hatch serving the 'snug'. Good fun!

The greatest pub in the whole of Manchester. I’ve been coming here for 20 years and I’ll carry on until my last day. Whilst the beer garden and beer have changed over the years, the inside is basically the same as it’s ever been. A fantastic atmosphere, never any issues. A bastion of sanity in the madness of Manchester City centre.

Stalwart of a pub that’s obviously been going a lot longer than the 30ish years it’s been a part of my life and I dearly hope it’s here long after I’m gone! Great for small groups and a quiet pint on your own. It’s had ups and downs but the beers are handled better now than they have been recently, whisky (if that’s your thing is a real bonus), and the vibe is always great. Cosy fires when it’s cold and a useful beer garden when it’s not. I love it here .

This pub is an historic gem which must be saved at all costs. It's not that i want it to be preserved in aspic, more that as a living, breathing centre of its community i want it to carry on meaning something to its customers. The interior alone is worth saving for what represents in terms of pub architecture, but this isn't a museum, it's a great place to grab a drink.
