I have only 2 Sunday roast requirements- either my husband’s at home or The Bristol! From the moment you arrive these wonderful people know what they’re doing. It was a grotty old day outside but inside was all amazing service and even more amazing food. The wonderful manager pops up now and again for a wee chat - a true gent and someone who understands the meaning of personal service. We’ve lived in Brighton for nearly 20 years and it’s our go to for a Sunday Roast - you won’t be disappointed!

We just had a lovely Sunday roast. It was delicious, hot and well-prepared. I marked it lower for atmosphere because it was quite noisy and difficult to converse without contributing to the din! Edited review to adjust for staff attitude. If you want a pleasant relaxing lunch don’t go on a weekend!

We visited The Bristol Bar on a wet mid-week evening and were sorry to see it so quiet as the hospitality on offer was F A B! We enjoyed a tasty meal prepared with true care and attentive bar/waiting staff. The chef even ran through the menu with us before we ordered, offering our GF guest further options. The generous portion I enjoyed meant I didn't need a pudd but the others went for cheeses and biscuits and really enjoyed the Brighton Blue sayig it was more pleasant than Stilton. Will enjoy visiting again when back in the area - thank you team.

The Bristol Bar is well located close to the seafriont and has a nice art deco feel about it. The ambience is very pleasant and the service is good. The food is good, but not outstanding. The starters are good value, but the main courses are probably overpriced by £2 or £3.

Please do not waste your time or money on going here for a Sunday Dinner. The dinner is a hocking and extremely overpriced for what you get. If you only like baby carrots and spring beans along with very watery flavourless gravy for £20 then book it. I am so sorry to have to write this but the people need to know! Not to mention a £6 service charge, outrages! What you charge for what you give is ridiculous. Please for the love of Sunday Dinners put some passion into it and give people a decent roast for £20. Thanks

We were a group of three friends at The Bristol Bar yesterday, two of us enjoying a drink our other friend was not drinking but all of us happy to catch up on a lovely Sunday afternoon. Unfortunately, we experienced the most horrible verbal attack from the owner who targeted my friend who had not bought a drink. He was really nasty and made some very personal comments which left us all feeling shocked and upset. Please beware of this monster who seemed to think it was perfectly fine to behave in this way, unbelievable!

Really upsetting experience where the owner insulted me, made misogynistic remarks about my appearance and totally ruined my day in Brighton. This was all due to me not buying a water. I explained to him, my friends had bought alcohol but as a non drinker the most I would purchase is water. Due to a medical condition I am unable to drink too much liquid, this is personal and not something I would share with a stranger. I felt so upset by the experience and have never experienced such nasty comments from a stranger, completely unprovoked.

Was coming in for a coffee today, was greeted by the manager, took about 10 minutes to talk to men and seemed more busy with anything else than actually serving. I asked for his WiFi before ordering as I had to book an Uber, he said “It’s for costumers only”. That made me turn around and head to Ground Kemptown, nicer cafe with friendlier staff. Here is the spiteful petty attitude you can see from the owner 👇🏼

I went for a Sunday roast with friends. Staff were welcoming from the start and accommodated us even though we were half an hour early. The food was fantastic across all three courses; the roast did not disappoint and was probably one of the best I've had for a while. With the great atmosphere, staff, and views overlooking the sea, it made for a nice afternoon with friends. As we had all three courses with drinks, we spent around £40 each, but it's worth the price.

We have found our local (I hope!). We were in the area as we are looking to move to Kemptown. We had a drink before our house viewing and were delighted by the welcome and loved the look and feel of the place. So much so, that we went out of our way to make a return visit the next day as we wanted to try the lunch menu before our long trip home. The chef was warm and friendly, the food was delicious and nothing was too much trouble. There was just one problem- we left without paying for a large sav blanc and we are so sorry! We were caught up in the moment. So dear owners- please accept our apologies and know that we will be back very soon to settle our bill and hopefully become regulars. See you soon. Mary Ann & Dean

Went in for a drink, asked what non alcoholic beers they had, made my choice. Was asked would I like in a bottle or glass. I said bottle. Got the manager muttering something in the ear of the barman, then got a glass and put it on the side of my order. So, left quite quickly. I wouldn't of minded if they wanted for me to drink in a glass fine, just don't give a choice. Anyhow bit unnecessary so won't return. Oh, trolling your negative reviews, doesn't achieve anything. I will never go to this place again!!!!The Food and service were good and initially we were having a lovely Family Sunday Lunch. My son lives in NYC so it was extra special that he could join us. We were just finishing our Roasts when my son noticed his wife and young son were calling him ( the phone was on silent) It was lovely to see my grandson and I was thrilled to say “Hi”. Within seconds a nasty, rude guy , presuming the Manager, stormed to our table and started shouting for us to turn off our phone,” didn’t we read the signs - NO phones!!!” !It was shocking and a totally over the top reaction. He was exceptionally rude and continued to rant about using our phone. It spoiled our experience and BTW there was no ‘no phones’ sign at our table. Grumpy old men with no manners should not be in Hospitality! Needless to say, we will not be returning to the Bristol Bar again - too many better places in Brighton to spend our money!!

AVOID Whilst previously I had given a good rating when I went solo to test out this venue for my birthday party, I changed my review based on the following. Booked my birthday party here and was expecting 5 guests to join me. On personally arriving ten mins early, which I thought was good manners, I told the manager/director, Simon Lawley, that there'd only be 4 guests as one couldn't make it as her father was ill. I got the response "Well I wish people would ring & tell us as I have setup all the tables!". Keep in mind it would have been the same size table anyways. So this was a great way to be greeted on my birthday. Secondly, my first friends arrived & as the sun was glaring in next to us we just lowered the blind next to us slightly (ours was the only table next to a window without wooden shutters on). Immediately the same manager comes over & tells us off saying everyone else in the bar wants to look at the sea (which from down the lower bar area is a bit of a far fetch to be honest). So my two friends (who had arrived) & I got up, paid for the drinks we had just ordered & left letting the bar staff & manager know why we were leaving. The other director, Alan Towler, who is the chef overheard our reason for leaving. One of these friends had said he's run in with the same manager a few years ago when he brought his son there (before their no kids policy had been introduced) and he had felt less than welcome then going in with a kid. So while the food might actually be okay, I would not recommend having to deal with this person who sits on the chair at the bar with the tablet making himself known & ruining peoples birthday parties. I can say the bar staff & other restaurant staff have been very polite & attentive on my previous solo dinners there, but this manager guy has just lost the business 5 customers. Instead I recommend the BarleyMow or the Thomas Kemp Pub because you don't want to be told off when you're giving them your hard earned money in the middle of a cost of living crisis. As you can see from the replies to the other 1star reviews, the manager is quite rude & defensive. You can also see from other reviews how the staff have told other guests off about trying to use the blinds and saying they're "breaking them" as an excuse. I look forward to seeing my response to this, because everyone else received a pretty deplorable nonsensical response. & as for the "do not use your phone notes" stuck over our table 🤣 wow. My friends said they felt less than welcomed when they arrived with my "happy birthday" balloon, & I had thought this myself as I watched them enter to no smiles or warmness. If however you do enjoy this level of customer service can I recommend "Karen's diner" in the marina. Response to response - pretty sure I haven't asked you to be my friend lol Seriously. But I have blocked you. Describing my personal facebook on your business reviews. Wow. There was nothing kind about you on my visit to your restaurant. Theres being kind, & then theres not putting up with such behaviour. You might want to reflect on why theres a common theme to the 1star comments.

Yikes where do I begin. I guess it all starts with the rude manager on his laptop who scolded us 6 times in the first 5 minutes of arriving. Everything from one member being a few minutes late to being scolded for lowering the blinds in the direct sunlight. Surely people have been blinded by the sun in the past. We don’t get a chance to ask if we could add birthday candles we brought on the dessert. While a great seafront location the manager didn’t take a liking to my party of 5. We ended up leaving in disgust. Fortunately pubs are plentiful in Kemptown.

The manager here is condescending, rude and just plain nasty. I’ve been before and the staff and food were decent but I’ve noticed the manage being rude to others. I thought he was having a bad day. But today he treated us like he was doing us a favour in allowing us into his pub. Yes it has sea views but it’s just a pub. Get over yourself. Fix your blinds to be customer friendly surely I’m not the first person to lower the blinds in the hot glaring sun. We were here 5 minutes and told off or given huffs and attitude 6 times. That was our signal to leave

Belated birthday lunch for our friend Simon at the Bristol was wonderful. The waiters all young lads were charming and professional. Portions were plentiful and the cauliflower/broccoli cheese as an extra dish was a lovely surprise and much appreciated. One of the owners was on hand to check on proceedings and made us feel at home, an old school raconteur with a sharp wit which is is sadly missing from most establishments these days. Went for Sunday lunch, The team were great and the food was great , sort of. My wife had the Fish pie which she said was fantastic as were the accompanying vegetables. How ever I had the Roast Beef which was promoted as medium rare. It was more rare than medium. The real let down however was the gravy. It was thin, wishy-washy, and everything on the plate was swimming in it. Therefore the beautiful crispy bottom roast potatoes were soggy and the meat was "underwater". An easy fix would be to serve the gravy separately and "reduce it" and by doing so make it it thicker. This would lift the meal dramatically, even so I would go back to eat there again. I hope they take onboard this well meant critic.

I was passing the Bristol Bar in Kemp Town, Brighton today, a lovely sunny day, increasingly warm, it was a weekday lunchtime and I was getting quite thirsty. I went in as I was attracted to having a drink at one of the windows overlooking the sea “panoramic sea views” as advertised outside. I was sitting on one of the bar benches, stroking a lovely dog lying on the bench and thinking about what I would order. Then the bar manager came and stood over me - quite threateningly I thought - and said “ you can’t drink that here” pointing to a can I had brought with me and forgotten about having put it on the table in front of me. I just stared at him as I knew I hadn’t wanted to drink a can in his bar. I had wanted to order a tea or a coffee. I felt he had somehow got the wrong end of the stick. He then repeated, again in not a very pleasant way, “Are you going to order a drink?” I looked around and there were no other customers in the bar. But I said I was going, and went. I also felt rather upset as I felt targeted in an unfriendly way. Some of these bars and pubs on our wonderful South Coast could do with brushing up their customer service skills, I feel. This is one of them.

I have to put that grade even though the bar is nice and staff at the bar during afternoon quite cool, but the manager somehow didn't like that I used my laptop and was quite rude to tell me to move, whereas old ladies used their phones. I explained the reason why I needed to work here, my son was born few days ago and he is staying at the hospital nearby I currently live abroad and had a session I couldn't miss, place was chilled to study and work, anyway with people like that better not giving them money or value. The bar was empty... Prior to setup my laptop I asked the bar tender when coming in if I could work in here, he said no problem and even proposed me free wifi pwd and a table with a plug nearby. I didn't use both. At that time I was super happy and proposed my family members to come and have diner later. After the attitude I had to face, no way... Then I paid attention to the surrounding and saw a sign where it was written they do no accept Laptops, tablets, etc ... Therefore to avoid confusion staff must be told that's impossible. If I was told no from first I would have tried to find another place, however when manager rushed during an important session and tell me to get off in next ten minutes it's not a gentlemen manner of doing things.

I stopped going to the Bristol about fifteen years ago as I was uncomfortable with the open drug dealing and the bar staff’s habit of closing when they felt like it. After Simon and Alan took over I went back, having been told it had improved, and mentioned the closing times to Simon, who told me that that wouldn’t happen again. How times change. Over the past few years we have been many times, mostly for food, and have taken friends there. Depending on his mood, or how much alcohol he’s had, Simon is either expansive or curt: Alan is a long suffering presence in the background. Having been abroad for a year we arranged to meet friends there last night: some for a meal and a larger group for drinks afterwards. As always, the staff were friendly and helpful and, although we were surprised at how much the prices had increased, we assumed it was due to the general cost of living increases and enjoyed the meal. Simon surfaced at one point but, having clearly had a few, ignored us. Our other friends arrived: there were about fifteen in total and all buying repeated rounds. At 9:10 the bell rang behind the bar and we were told that it was last orders; when we asked why, Simon slurred ‘because we can’ and waddled off into the back of the pub, leaving his hapless bar staff to deal with us. As we left another group arrived and were disappointed, but not surprised, when we told them it was shut. Despite the pervasive smell of stale food I’ve always liked the Bristol but won’t go back. I’m not sure if Simon is bored with being a publican or has realised that he doesn’t have the temperament for it but being a misanthropic drunk drives people away rather than encourages them in. I’m sure that, when he sobers up and can see the keyboard, Simon will draft a response. I won’t be reading it.

DO NOT GO! We were sat at the table with the sun in our eyes. We stood up to turn the blind (NOT lower it) and was rudely shouted at by the owner to not touch the blinds. If we don’t like the table then we should move. As we left we said to him that we felt the way he spoke to his customers was extremely rude. He then proceeded to say “tell someone who gives a shit” “fuck off”. The chef calmly approached us to explain the blinds had been broke many times which we understand but the way it was communicated to us was not acceptable. He then continues to shout rude remarks, swearing and approaching us aggressively to the point where the chef had to hold him back. The pub is a lovely venue however the owner most definitely is not. Another customer followed us out to say the way he spoke to us was disgusting and told us she needed to push her chair in because if someone else wanted to sit next to them they cannot. EDIT: we didn’t even manage to touch the string of the blind before we were shouted at to not touch it. We approached the staff in a calm manner THROUGHOUT. Surly the response should have been approached in calm way and see what you can do to assist your paying customers. In response to the chefs comments below. No fuss was caused by ANYONE but the owner himself. Do better. All replies to bad comments are clearly manipulated to make out the staffs response to a situation is reasonable.

RUDE OWNER/STAFF!!! We went for a Sunday lunch, we were 15mins early for our reservation and firmly reminded that we were early but since it was opened two mins ago I don’t know how it was relevant. There was only one group inside but we were not given a sea-view table anyways. As we sat and started ordering, we were reminded that we had the table for only 2 hours which was again an unnecessary reminder and my partner suggested we should go somewhere else. Fifteen mins later we were reminded again. at that point it became frustrating. We ordered a cheese board which had mouldy raspberries but we didn’t wanna complain, i was already not having a good time. They seemed pretty proud of their food however it was mediocre at best. I can’t say it was expensive but it sure was not cheap. I had better service and far better food for less. So overall experience was below average. Also reading below comments and responses made me realise that they need a professional manager both in the restaurant and on social media. EDIT : after the owner’s rude comments disguised as an apology, i took the rating to 1 star… it’s not my fault this establishment has low quality food, poor hygiene and rude staff. Sort yourselves please.

A lovely bar with very friendly staff going above and beyond duty. We arrived half an hour after the kitchen shut, but the chef was still there and offered to re-open just for us. We had the sharing plate between the 3 of us, with a couple of sides. Ample for lunch. The menu looked great and was very reasonably priced. The Harvey's beer was perfect. Faultless :-)

We only went there for a drink but the menu did look rather pricey! Drinks were expensive as well but the view and company were worth it!

Myself and 7 friends attempted to go for a drink in the Bristol bar last night, we were promptly turned away by the landlord because our next destination was the proud cabaret at the top of the road. Baffling why you’d turn away customers when your bar is empty.

What a fabulous place. It has a lovely atmosphere and a great view. The selection of drinks was great and the food amazing! It was beautifully presented too. Thank you to Alan, who I understand was the chef that night, Louise and Marcus who were really friendly and attentive. We will definitely be coming back next time we come to stay!

Lovely views and standard faute for a ‘gastro pub’. Choice limited but that is to be expected in the current climate. Very friendly and helpful staff. Would definitely return

You just can’t go wrong here. This is by far the best place for a Sunday roast just outstanding. So much meat with fresh vegetables and plenty of gravy. With beautiful sea views and a lovely atmosphere. Staff are all fantastic and very attentive.

Tasty, well-priced food, a cosy atmosphere and kind and welcoming staff. I had booked a table in advance and it was a nice touch to be addressed by name when taking my order and saying goodbye. The lemon posset was particularly delicious. A lovely end...

Went for a sunday roast with over 10 other people. The food was Really good (Althought, pigs in blankets, with no blankets and in gravy instead?), if a little on the pricey side.

Wonderfully welcoming staff and incredibly dog-friendly! The Veggie and Vegan roasts are amazing; full of flavour and beautifully prepared. The team went above and beyond, with the chef (or maybe the owner) even bringing out a full roast dinner just for our dog, who absolutely loved it! It was such a thoughtful gesture that really touched us. The atmosphere here is warm and inviting—definitely recommend!

The chef smokes outside in full chef uniform. If this is the standards they display, imagine how bad the actual kitchen hygiene is!

One of the best pubs I’ve ever been to! My sister and I tried to get some food at the end of the night, but unfortunately the nearby takeaway was closed. When I came back empty handed, the bouncers very kindly gave us their food. The nicest bouncers I’ve ever met, reasonably priced drinks and warm welcoming atmosphere. Can’t recommend The Prince Albert enough.
