As usual the Thursday Pie Night didn’t disappoint! A wide choice of flavours (advertised on Facebook on the previous Tuesday) had been chosen and pre booked by our group and all were served efficiently, piping hot and at the time requested by very pleasant, friendly and polite staff. The pub is a real English pub - open fire, warm and cosy, ’mine hosts’ to hand, good food and good ale. We love coming to this pub!

I rang to book a table for 10 (6 adults and 4 children) on Wednesday. Had 3 conversations to discuss high chairs etc. I rang back to confirm the booking which the chap confirmed. I rang today to amend the numbers due to a dropout due to illness - to be told the booking didn't exist. They placed me on hold and then passed me over to the landlord (Dave I believe) to be told "I was at Beverley races all day so must have forgotten..." Offered to seat us in the bar area (but with 4 kids, that isn't an option). Disappointed as we have been a few times in the past and have only recommended to others. Also, spoke with friends who were due to go last week, only for the same to happen to them - but they turned up at the restaurant and were treated poorly and like they were an inconvenience.

A lovely evening with delicious home made pie! We were served by two lovely and friendly ladies. Food was fresh and good value for money. The restaurant area was very clean and had a good ambience with the lighting and candles. The place was busy and I’m glad we had booked in advance. I go a long way for my cheese and onion pie as I’m from Lancashire, but I have found a new local place to visit regularly. I’m delighted.

We were over from Northern Ireland visiting family and went to the Bricklayers for Sunday lunch. It is a pub we know well as we used to live nearby. Dave, the landlord, gave us a sincere, warm and friendly greeting as usual and we were given a nice large table. We had three beefs and a turkey between us. The food was excellent, meat well cooked and a wide selection of fresh, no frozen rubbish, cooked vegetables. Portions sizes are big and will satisfy the largest appetite. A bonus of the Bricklayers is that they do offer a smaller size portion for those who do not eat as much. The choice of desserts is wide and all are homemade. Jude and her team in the kitchen do a fantastic job and the waiting staff are polite and courteous. If you want really great, freshly prepared food then this is the place to go. I would recommend booking as it does get very busy on a Sunday. Thanks to everyone for a superb family occasion. By the way, Dave is in no way grumpy or unpleasant, do not be put off by an other reviewer, in my opinion they were talking about some other pub!

This was one of the best Sunday lunches I have had. The pub was absolutely packed so thought this was a good sign. We were served very quickly and after we had ordered our meal it came quite quickly. The food was delicious there was five of us and three had lamb one had turkey. Our only problem was that we had an even year old with us and she didn't want a Sunday dinner we asked and there was nothing she could have so she has three Yorkshire puddings. We all had a main course and four of us had desserts which were equally as good. All in all I cannot fault this place other than a lack of children's menu. Would definitely return. Anne walker

Called in for a drink after a long cycle ride. Had a decent pint and stood patiently at the bar waiting to be served (not many people in). Landlord saw me but walked into the back. Came out a couple of minutes later and started talking to (I assume) his wife. She saw me waiting and nodded towards me for her husband's attention. He then came over and said "my grandchildren are more important than you"!. I was lost for words but asked for another pint (I should have just told him where to go) which he served but then kept my change hovering in his clenched fist while he had another conversation with his wife. Most ill mannered excuse of a landlord I've ever met. After a day's birding at Blacktoft Sands on probably the nastiest Saturday in April, what you need is a cosy pub serving dinner. That's what we found. Warm fire - yes, a real fire - and warm welcome from the landlord and staff. We joked about it being a local pub for local people, because it was pretty full of locals who had been involved in a charity event and who had subsequently made great inroads into the menu, so the famous pies were in short supply! I had plaice goujons, husband had scampi. Typical pub grub, well cooked, nice to see more veg than one usually gets with such dishes. We split a bakewell tart for dessert, which was just as well, otherwise we would have needed a doggy bag! Clearly home made, and delicious. Very good service from the friendly staff. Would have gone back next day but they don't serve food on Sunday nights.

During our recent return visit to the area was advised not to miss the pie night on Thursday evenings. We booked in advance and from the moment we stepped through the door into the warm bar with an open fire we knew we had made the right choice with what can only be described as a real East Yorkshire welcome and excellent, no nonsense food - with service at the bar and the table being correctly attentive but not overly fussy. We knew we needed to find somewhere to eat our Sunday lunch and by the end of our visit on the Thursday evening we had booked a table for Sunday. Again, we had a great meal with amazing meat and a plentiful supply of yorkshire puds, potatoes and vegetables and lashings of gravy - they brought a gravy boat to the table which, unfortunately is not the norm these days. What a wonderful find and well worth the visit to Laxton if you are ever in the area. They only serve food from Thursdays to Sunday.

We have now eaten here twice for Sunday lunch, once as a group of 12 and then a party of 4. The bricklayers is none of this fancy modern stuff! It has a big warm heart and fireplace you want to curl up on a cold winters night in front of, with welcoming staff and a friendly atmosphere. I recommend booking for Sunday lunch and the more people who read this and try it the harder it will be for me to get in!! Sunday lunch is a choice of roast and all the trimmings or steak pie which are all fresh, hot, tasty and the Yorkshire puds are just like I make at home! None of the frozen rubbish you get at most places. The service is very relaxed and friendly but good, they can't do enough for you. If you don't have enough of something they will get you more. The yorkshires are sometimes a little caught on the top but this happens when they are the size they are, just trim the tops off and enjoy! Or as my Dad always says a bit of burnt will put hairs on your chest? ( Still don't get why I would want a hairy chest) Deserts are traditional steamed puds and custard with the exception of the cheesecake ( as good as any tasted and deep) also the chocolate brownies is a favourite, and my daughter was disappointed they did not have it on the menu the second time we ate here! Still sat thinking shall I share this review or keep it to myself! But here goes! Enjoy

Made it really easy to catch up with all our family and friends before the big day- and only a five min drive or short walk. Perfect. An unexpected 'take me out for something to eat' treat by my other half did indeed become an unexpected treat. I haven't visited the Bricklayers for some time and was pleasantly surprised with the tasteful refurbishment . Warmly greeted, we both opted for steaks. Sirloin for him, rib-eye for me, medium rare. The meat is locally sourced as is all of the seasonal vegetables. The steak arrived cooked just as we ordered, well presented with all the usual accompaniments and thoroughly enjoyed. Home made desserts could not be resisted and we opted to share the apple and black currant crumble with custard which was as equally delicious. Looking forward to testing Sunday lunch and Thursday pie night. Thankfully the prices are not silly prices as seen in York and Hull particularly when having to feed a family. We were taken for Sunday lunch and were very impressed and subsequently went back for the Thursday pie and pea evening. Excellent, good choice and definitely home produced.

Went along for a BBQ evening and had the most delicious steak. Cooked to perfection and the trimmings were all scrumptious. Lovely english pub, warm and cosy. The menu is not extensive but it is definitely quality.

About 40 of us from our luncheon club paid our first visit as a group to The Bricklayers at Laxton,,the seating was cosy by that I mean not an awful lot of room, but nor cramped,, not forgetting how big our group was.We had pre ordered and on our table were 4 of us,for the first time as I can recall one of the choices was ham salad, and 2 of us chose it,and it was lovely the ham was what I call proper ham not plastic ham,and I am sure you know what I mean,,the salad itself was fresh and plenty of different vegetables was perfect,,,the other 2 on our table one had chicken and mushrooms with lovely vegetables and the other had a pie with a casserole the pie was suet ,with plenty of meat and lots of gravy,,both came nice and hot and as we all ate up speaks for itself. Now for the deserts 2 of us had trifle obviously home made just delicious, can't think what the others had,but came with coffee or tea as well.So the downside was service was a little slow as only 2 people serving and they got meals out as quickly as they could. I hope as a club we return because it was one of the best meals as a group I have had and I am sure looking at empty plates the others in the group were in the same mind.

Last Sunday we had the most delicious home cooked lunch at The Bricklayers Arms. There were four roast meats on offer. I had pork and my husband had lamb, both were superb. A good selection of fresh vegetables were available and the Yorkshire puddings were great too. A perfect outing then. I did think the décor a little dated and the many Knick knacks unappealing but I was delighted with the food. Thank you to all the team there.

Walked down for a meal and a drink when staying at Apple Tree cottages, landlord was very friendly and chatted to us for quite awhile about the local area and how he had come to take over the pub. Both meals were very nice and came with home-cooked chips, a big plus in my book, and the gammon came with both egg and pineapple which also seems to be rare these days. We were made to feel very welcome and would recommend, shame we could not stay for Sunday lunch or pie night as both sounded excellent. Just of note tripadvisor appears to have this pub listed in Nottinghamshire, its actually near Saltmarshe railway station, Howden, East riding of Yorkshire

Fair play is all I can say. Relatively new couple seeing how it goes. Pub needs up dating decor wise and I Expect that may come in Time but that's just a personal thing. (Not a lover of horse brasses and knick knacks) but the Sunday roast is outstanding. For those of you that are local. Meat is from Parkinson butchers veg from sweeting farmers and the wine from flourish and prosper. Wasn't expecting such quality from a local country pub. This is not gastro food it's good home cooking - I felt like I was back at my mums). The hosts were welcoming. We will be back.

MORE AT TripAdvisor

Been for Sunday lunch, had a choice of two starters (fish cakes or chicken goujons) roast, (choice of pork or beef) two mains from the weekly menu and several sweets for after. We chose the two starters to share between three of us, two beef roasts and a pork. We were shown to our table when our starters had arrived but had to wait for cutlery as none on the table. The starters were ok, hot and tasty but not homemade. When the main courses arrived, had to wait for cutlery again! The veg, roast potatoes, stuffing balls and Yorkshire pudding we felt were all frozen as the veg had an unpleasant taste. The gravy was so thin it didn't even resemble gravy and we were disappointed that there was no mash to pour it on. The beef was tough as old boots and had possibly been cooked yesterday? we were pleased there was only one slice on the plate as we left half . Needless to say none of us wanted to experience any of the sweets. We are not picky eaters in the least, but come on, a roast dinner is the simplest of meals to cook from fresh. All in all, two starters, three mains, five drinks set us back nearly £50. It's been a very long time since we have left somewhere not feeling full or satisfied.....until today. The owners are new (according to the staff) and are trying to build the restaurant up again after being closed. We feel like they should maybe sample other places nearby and take a leaf out of their books.......reasonably priced, home cooked good food a recipe that shouldn't go wrong.

This gastro pub has won loads of awards.... and has probably thought it could survive on its past reputation. But it wouldn't win the cleanest toilets awards. What a grubby mess. Come on folks, concentrate on detail rather than displaying your awards. The food was ok, not memorable. Great country location, pleasant enough staff but the place has that kind of feel of, "we've made our money here, people will still come here for years yet whatever we do."Sorry, there are too many places around who do care a bit more and who have yet to win awards.

We stopped in on a Tuesday late afternoon. There was only one table occupied so it was nice and quiet. We both had double scoop cones. There were loads of ice cream flavours to choose from. Yummy.

We booked into the lodges next to the Gardeners Inn and decided to walk around for dinner & drinks. The venue is decorated for Halloween which I did enjoy and we had a lovely welcome from the waitress. A few item were sold out but the menu was plentiful and the food did not disappoint. I had the sizzling hunters chicken and my partner had Korean Chicken. Portion size was fantastic the side salad & slaw was fresh, definitely the best hunters chicken I’ve had. Banoffee Pie & cream for dessert again it was better than any other I’ve tried. Lovely atmosphere, service time felt right for the number of tables eating and the price was reasonable. Would recommend 100%

First visit to this lovely little restaurant to celebrate 🍾 both Mother’s Day and my wife's 60th birthday and we were not disappointed! The setting in the window table with background music and plenty of space was perfect. We ate off the a la carte menu and we both had three courses complimented by a bottle of fizz. Each course was food heaven and the service was exceptional so we will be returning for the Sunday lunch to celebrate my birthday in April. Thank you
