The pub is run by an old lady who likes a nice chat. It is a real English pub. Great food. You can spend the night here with your camper in the parking lot when you come or go to or from the Ferry in Harwich.

We booked to stay with our campervan through Britstop. Arrived later than expected but Liz the landlady waited for us and provided a superb meal. Very quiet and level car park - no light anywhere. 15 minutes run to Harwich for the ferry in the morning.

This place is a real hidden gem. Food we had (Cod & chips) cooked to perfection. Dessert (apple & plum crumble & scoop of vanilla ice cream) absolutely delicious. Very welcoming atmosphere, highly sociable landlady, really handy if you have a motor home and you want to stop off on way to Harwich ferry. Highly recommend this place.

A real gem this. Anybody who grew up in England in the sixties and seventies would instantly recognise this as a prime example of English pubs in their Golden Era. No music, TV or electronic distractions, just a warm cosy atmosphere, good conversation and good food which is all home cooked and excellent quality. A special mention for the Landlady's ham which she cooks herself, I had almost forgotten how good cooked ham can taste. The Mole Trap bitter was excellent. The Landlady is also a mine of information over a wide range of subjects :-). Nestled in a sleepy Essex village only 20mins from Harwich it is also an ideal motorhome stopover for anybody using the Harwich ferry, just ring ahead for a warm welcome. Highly recommended, would definitely stop here again.

A small, rustic pub in a very small town. We were warmly welcomed by the operator and his mother. The food was fine for a pub in this rural area. The free overnight accommodation with our camper was particularly nice, as we had to catch the ferry in Harwich the next morning. In the evening there was still a good atmosphere at the game between Germany and Scotland during the European Championships. The landlord has specially installed his TV in the pub.

I am so glad I was not put off by the previous review as our experience could not have been more different. I have just had an excellent Sunday lunch of Roast beef, Yorkshire Pudding and 6 vegetables. Everything was cooked to perfection. The lady who served us was very friendly and we had a long chat with the owner who had, along with her son been busy in the kitchen where she does all cooking from scratch. We will be back to try some of her other homemade dishes. Such a great experience to be served excellent food in a friendly setting by people who seem to really care about what they are doing.

During our bike ride through Little Bentley we stopped off here for the Sunday lunch. Immediately faced with a rude barman who literally grunted when we asked for a table. There were only a few tables taken which was a big red flag for a Sunday lunch time, we should've left then! A miserable waiter took our order and we had to wait 50 minutes for our food. Our children's lemonade was luke warm and my glass of wine was similar to the taste of Sarsons vinegar. The beef was as tough as leather and the chicken breast was pink which my husband complained about and it was exchanged for the tough as leather beef, even the Yorkshire puddings were stale. Our children had a few mouthfuls of their meal but the rest was inedible. Please don't waste your money and go somewhere else.

After a long trying day our eating, drinking and stay over in the car park in our camper van at the Bricklayers Arms was a tonic to lift the soul. Liz (proprietor and chef) and son Will made us incredibly welcome as did the friendly locals. If you arrive on the evening of the first Thursday of the month as we did, you can take advantage of the “Shear and beer” offer of a pint and a haircut from a local travelling hairdresser for the very reasonable sum of £13 (prices may vary if reading this in a few years time). Clearly very popular with the locals and a very civilised way of getting your hair cut. The food is very definitely “home made” and fresh and you can taste the difference to the usual reheated in a microwave fare. Self contained Motorhome owners are welcome to stay for free overnight in the car park with the obvious proviso that they enjoy the excellent hospitality offered by the pub. The location is incredibly quiet overnight, unlike many of the larger club sites that are usually near a busy highway. Our thanks to Liz, Will and the cast of locals who made for such a memorable stay. Regards Nic & Helen

Stayed over in motorhome before getting the ferry from Harwich. Such a friendly welcome, we had a few pints and a huge portion of fish and chips each. Delicious! Other reviews saying it needs a refurb, I'm not arguing that it's not a touch shabby but personally it doesn't detract at all. New carpets wouldn't make the place any friendlier 😎 really a perfect British village pub!

We stopped here as a motorhome stopover before reaching the Harwich ferry next day. What a warm welcome by the owner and staff. We all had carvery and it was the best we have had for a long time! Fresh, local produce, meat cooked to perfection, potatoes straight out of the ground... Good quality and super tasty! The motorhome sat fairly level at the back of their ample car park with views over the fields in this quiet English Town. I love to recommend good places to visit and this is one of those... As live musicians were performing that evening the place was busier than normal some delay is understandable but the absence of an allotted table, the long wait for are meals and to find the sanitiser bottle empty all made for a poor experience. What's more no form of apology was forthcoming from the proprietor, just excuses.
