We were travelling through to Kent and decided to stop over at The Brewers Arms. It’s very hard nowadays to find a traditional country pub. We were greeted with a smile and friendly chat with the staff and locals. We both had the steak and ale pie (thanks chef -sorry I’ve forgotten your name🤦♀️) it was absolutely delicious and had chunks of tender meat in. Thanks Terry for the top tip of the Cuckoo Trail. We’ll definitely return another day as the Landlady/Staff and locals made us feel so welcome.

Out for a (long) bike ride with the wife and both of us wanted (needed!) some sustenance. Nearby pub in Rushlake Green was too busy and when we saw the food coming out the kitchen it didn't impress. So we continued on our way to The Brewers Arms, and very happy we did... Greeted with a smile and a friendly hello as I entered the bar, and a decent menu of traditional pub grub at reasonable prices. I went for the ham. egg and chips. Wife went for the fish and chips. Both dishes were large and uncomplicated - exactly what we wanted. Freshly cooked homemade chips, and loads of 'em. Ham went on forever and was delicious; especially with the side of chutney. Personally I love proper pubs like this. Very traditional, good beer, great pub grub, friendly staff. Will be back!

This a lovely country pub . Lots of dog walks nearby and it is close to the vineyard which we also visited. The food was delicious. Both us and our muddy dogs were made to feel very welcome by the owner Fiona and her staff. We very much enjoyed sharing an after dinner drink and chat with Fiona and the locals .

If you like people you will love the Brewers Arms. Fiona and her amazing staff and fabulous Kitchen are great fun and all professionals whilst never losing the opportunity to be amazingly hospitable. To Celebrate the return of the very much loved and respected friend Tony, who had been taking his mind for a walk for a few months, this pub was an ideal choice. This fabulous venue clearly experienced in creating memories for like minded friends is the hub of the community and gave of their best. Taking your mind for a walk is always good for the soul, your heart will always be where your family and friends are. A good pub like this is full of friends you just haven’t met yet. Hospitality at its best!!!! Thank you Saltcote

This is clearly a local pub and our family were not welcome, which was really disappointing. We have three children and a snarky comment was made that it had “turned into Butlins” since our arrival. We were told that we needed to hurry as our table had been reserved, but no one ever came. Food was decent, but the manager was inhospitable. We will not be returning.

Booked to come here for my Mum’s Birthday Meal. Me and my partner haven’t been to this pub since we was young, but my parents came a few weeks ago with some friends and said how nice the food was so we thought we would give it a go. When we arrived it was like whoever was at the bar wanted to know who you was coming in as everyone glared at you! We had a table booked but must of all stood by the bar to order drinks for about 15/20 mins! We eventually got our drinks and got shown to our table which was tucked round the corner. It was on a table with benches. The table was a bit wobbly and we had to try and move the benches closer but these were very squeaky when trying to move. We sat by a window that looked out which was quite nice. We ordered our food which included:- 1 Steak served with chips mushroom and tomato and a sauce they recommended - This was very nice! 1 pork ribs, chips and homemade slaw this was lovely and all I needed was a fork and the meat just fell off it was so tender and so yummy! 2x scampi and chips and salad with tartare sauce The chips were nice but they looked a bit anemic like a very light colour when they came out. Could of done with a bit more crisp. Anyway everyone enjoyed their meals and we had a good laugh. 3 of us ordered puddings. 1 Strawberry Sundae- this was quoted to be yummy. And two of the ‘pink pepper meringues with ice cream and strawberry compote. This was the best and we got told very popular and we could see why. We said to the lady that was mainly serving us how nice the meringue was and the fact it was homemade. As most places you go to don’t make it homemade that’s for sure!! But this pudding was so yummy we would 100% recommend it!! Don’t get put off by ‘pepper’ it was just a little bit if sprinkling on top of the meringue for decoration. We hope to return again in the future and hopefully with better weather this time. Sitting inside on a rainy evening in August!! The atmosphere was lovely we was away from the bar area so we was away from all the young lads and their pints. Even though we was by another very loud party of people celebrating once they left it was peaceful and we could enjoy our own conversations along with the music in the background. The only poor thing I would give about this pub is the lack of lighting when leaving the pub. As I say we had a very dark full raining evening so when we left it was pitch dark and we could hardly see where we was walking and this was from the pub to the car park. We ended up using the torches from our phones to see! I don’t think this is particularly good if someone elderly was visiting and leaving at night. Just needed a bit of light to help!

The food was nice. Although there were no paper menus and the board with the menu on was in the bar area. So we had to go and take a picture of it and then sit back down. Seating was a little cramped. Staff were very friendly but the locals who drink there are arrogant. They looked at us as though we shouldn’t have been there and wouldn’t move a little for us to get to the bar to order a drink when we first arrived.

We were in the area staying in a local campsite and went for a drive out to find somewhere to eat. Came across The Brewers Arms and how lucky were we. Immediately made to feel welcome as soon as we walked through the door. Found us a table so we could eat (and on st Patrick’s day too) The food was incredible and such a varied range to chose from too. Even our dog was kept busy with treats while we were eating. We’ve already decided this pub is more than worth a drive out just for dinner one afternoon/evening and we will definitely be returning.

Recently had an evening meal here, to say it was awful would be an understatement. We complained, nothing was done, meals went back as cold. As for the price of drinks £5 for a pint of coke. That is a disgusting price, friends who run a pub charge less than £2. Will obviously not be returning anytime soon. The excuses were beyond apprehension.

On Thursdays it is normally pizza night at my local, living around the corner, we do not usually have a takeaway from the pub. However, after working hard during the day in the garden during this lockdown, we decided to have a couple of Fee's pizza's. A gentle walk up the hill at my appointed collection time, picked up the meals and got home.... still hot! My goodness best pizza's we have had for ages, once this period in our lives is over I would recommend a visit, for either a Thursday and enjoy the pizza evening in the garden (weather permitting), or even any other day for a good meal.

Haven’t been back here for about 7 years..Only had a drink at the bar. Menu looked good but sadly not my kind of pub as very dog friendly. One behind the bar ( not pulling pints!)and another smaller dog in the bar area which I think may belong to the pub although this dog was well behaved. One customer came in, let their obviously untrained dog off the lead and it immediately jumped up at a woman eating her dinner, she was not amused.Despite that the atmosphere was friendly.

Locals nattering away happily at bar, outside seating is a glorious sun trap, and a roast beef with ye trimmings was sitting in front of me within 15 mins, delivered with a lovely smile. Empty plate shortly thereafter. Plenty of choice on beers, and a sort of gentle unhurried atmosphere...who could ask for more? Even the curtain fabric was impressive...top notch place.

We went to this pub 3 times on our visit to Sussex. On the first occasion the food was excellent. The langoustines with watermelon salad was particularly good. However, the next evening, we were told there was no food and were directed to "The Star" up the road. The evening after that, there was, again, no food but there was a fish and chip van that had an arrangement with the pub. If you bought a drink at the pub you could take your fish and chips into the pub garden.Check ahead to avoid disappointment.

As I didn't make a booking in a local pub and couldn't be accommodated as it was full, we decided to try the Brewers Arms for Sunday lunch. Upon arrival I ordered a pint of Harveys and a De-caff coffee. The lad pulled the Harvey's and went to the kitchen for the De-caff. A half pint later he re-appeared and embarrassingly said "sorry we don't do De-caff"??? I queeried this and a Gemma Collins look-alike looked at us both as though we had asked for a double whisky in a hot water bottle!! In fact it rather humiliated the wife. A restaurant pub that doesn't stock De-caff???? As my wife carries sachets of de-caff in her bag for this rare occasion, she asked if they would use the sachets. Once again, the Gemma doppelganger reacted as though we had asked her to empty a colostomy bag! (not that either of us has one). VERY reluctantly she agreed but charged us £3 50 for her trouble. After Gemma left, the lad mouthed an apology and asked if we were eating. I said not now, you probably don't have any potatoes! Never again will I cross that threshold and intend to add this review to my Facebook.

Must have been good as I managed another 2 pints ( well, I wasnt driving this visit ). Inside is a comfy dining area and nice low and well stocked bar. Tidy clean ladies loo. There is a sizable fenced and gated outdoor seating area, with plenty of tables and sun umbrellas to boot. For me I went off piste, I order steak every time but i ordered pan fried salmon, Hollandaise sauce, asparagus and French potatoes, I actually wanted to lick the plate and did not want it to end. The others had fish pie, think it's called trawler mans pie on the menu, and we're waxing lyrical about how amazing it was. Had to seat ourselves on one of the 5 cramped tables. After a less than warm welcome we ordered drinks, the water provided was dirty and tasted dirty too. Deciding not to eat here was an easy decision due to the fact we'd not been provided with menus and the plates were paper. Making an attempt to pay for the drinks the manager was incredibly rude and obnoxious and did not show any attempt to accept my money. When debating whether to simply walk out my money was accepted by a young lad working behind the bar. I would certainly recommend NOT going here.

We decided to go to this pub on a Friday evening for dinner but it wasn't the atmosphere that we were looking for. The bar was exceptionally busy with evening drinkers which is great to see but unlike other pubs such as The Black Duck and Star there wasn't much separation between restaurant and bar. It was all very relaxed which would work for some but given the restaurant prices I had hoped for a more restaurant service. For example, we stood by the restaurant book and were ignored by 2 members of staff going to pull pints at the other side of the bar before eventually being seen to. The landlady herself was very helpful but we felt like the priority was on the drinkers. We weren't shown a set table but instead just told to take either a seat with the noisy drinking side of the pub which was overcrowded and very noisy or one of the two tables in the room adjacent. We settled on a table by a nice open fire, which was a cosy touch. The table settings were extremely basic, the portions good and the food tasty but no fancy presentation or little extras here, no side salad or garnish for the burger and a mountain of chips and a glug of gravy over the pork. It would be nice to have the gravy on the side and a little finesse in the food. It seems as though the website does not accurately represent the food or the menu available. The sample 'specials menu' shows a variety of starters and mains including game options and lots of traditional British food, the reality was only two specials, Chicken Fajitas and Fishcakes which was slightly disappointing. They were quite accommodating to allergies, substituting the cream based sauce for gravy and allowing me to have chips instead of mashed potato. It would be helpful to see more allergy information on the menu though. In all, I think I'd return for a drink by the fire but not to for a restaurant experience.

The last time we visited beautiful East Sussex from Dublin we enjoyed a fabulous night in the Brewer's Arms, so much so that we had really looked forward to visiting again. Upon arrival we were delighted to find that the lovely Fiona is still gracing the pub with her presence. A lively character who makes everybody feel welcome. She loves people and engages with everybody, without being intrusive. We found out that she likes the Irish, and loves rugby. Not a bad combination, I just have to talk her out of supporting the All Blacks !! Fiona told us she has a revamped kitchen ready to open with a fab new menu that we were fortunate enough to preview and it's truly mouthwatering. Fortunately we just beat a happy party of nearly a dozen very young with their parents who sat at opposite ends of the outside patio but behaved in exemplary fashion. The youthful staff served us drinks, took our order and served it promptly, seeming in total command of their responsibilities amongst the conflicting calls on their time and patience. We were continually checked upon to see we were satisfied. My only complaint was the size of the menu, almost of biblical proportions.

The pub is brilliant, the food was gorgeous and the atmosphere was amazing! I thought the food was a little over priced, but when it arrived i could see why it was the price that it was, you could really tell it was freshly cooked and home made, and true pub grub!

We went to this pub for a meal to remember, we shall remember, but for all the wrong reasons....When we arrived we thought that it was closed. It was very cold despite a wood burner alightAfter ordering 2 J2os orange and passion fruit we were passed off with NOT J2os. We always now request that the juice is left in the bottle and that we have a glass. On questioning this I was told that the drink served was more HEALTHY????? My juice had to be replaced as I am allergic to something in the other brand. This was changed by one of the two females , she was not in a very good mood.We then had to move seats as they were changing the furniture around.I had liver and bacon which was over cooked and my husband had fish and chips. This was also overcooked and a very dark brown colour. They were not busy on this Friday lunchtime, one other couple came in while we were there. We decided not to bother with a pudding and were relieved that we had not ordered a starter. We had to wait ages to pay the bill and certainly will not go back.Date of visit as on my receipt 20th MARCH 2015. Table B4 Total paid £25.05

We visited here with a group of friends and our children whilst camping. We all ordered meals and drinks. The staff were grumpy and actually were quite rude to some of the group. Felt unwelcome and a general inconvenience to the staff for coming to the pub. Would not recommend as a place to go with family (especially young children) - probably only a good place to go if your a local!

We have visited the Brewers Arms several times recently and on every occasion the food was delicious. The menu is extensive, and the staff friendly and helpful. Incidentally I had the Cajun chicken last weekend and it was perfectly cooked and very tasty. A lovely pub and well worth a visit. Dont be put off by previous reviews.

I ordered the cajun chicken which came with 4 huge pieces. The first one I cut open was raw in the middle. Undercooked chicken can be severely detrimental for your health. Raw chicken might be contaminated with a bacteria called Salmonella, which can be killed if chicken is cooked to the proper minimum internal temperature. When chicken is not fully cooked, your risk of gastrointestinal distress and other problems increases. Front of house service was good and she apologised immediately and had it cooked some more. The same chicken, just cooked some more!!!!Perhaps they should employ a trained and competent chef???

We went for an anniversary, making this clear at the time of booking. We were put at a table in a bar, with loud conversation and loud music, and much coming and going from the bar. Several people, including the proprietor, we gathered, were at the bar, and ignored diners, carrying on their own conversation all evening. There was another room, but it was closed with no explanation. This was the atmosphere of a drinkers' pub, not a restaurant. When the food came it was poor, and the service was casual.

I have eaten here 3 times in the past 3 years, the 2 most recent occasions have been under the new management. The food is excellent and I couldn't fault it even if I wanted to. The staff are friendly and it is nicely decorated. My only issue is that having eaten here in both the summer and winter I have found it rather chilly. Think I need to sit next to the fire next time!

My boyfriend and I visited here for a weeknight dinner, as I used to live locally and remember coming to this pub as a child. We were welcomed by very friendly staff (and locals!) and immediately felt at home. The menu had so much choice -everything you would want for a 'winter warmer' dinner. My boyfriend had steak and I had the chicken fajitas, both meals were of exceptional quality and full of flavour. We had asked to sit in the restaurant area (where nobody else was), which I thought might be a problem, but no -they even came and lit the fire for us!Such a lovely evening, will definitely return... Especially after meeting Becky who regularly pops in the pub for a drink too (Becky is their pet donkey!)

Not knowing this area and needing lunch, we chanced on the Brewers Arms. Initial impressions good, wood fire, tastefully decorated and a very interesting and extensive menu. This can often mean 'out of the freezer' but we were assured everything was freshly cooked and when the food came, we had no reason to believe this was not the case. It was nicely cooked, served on hot plates and was delicious. Delightful beer - try the Harvey's Old and the Sauvignon Blanc (by the glass) was excellent. Overall everything good value for money. Gladly go back if we are in the area, even if it means a detour.

We went to The Brewers Arms for lunch with friends and their kids. The pub is in a very pleasant setting with a small beer garden out front and some friendly donkeys around! One actually visits the pub on occasion! We found the staff to be very polite and friendly. The menu was extensive; almost too much to choose from. Service was very good and the food was also good. Portions were on the large side although I'm not complaining for the price. Kids menu was also good as they could do smaller portions of pretty much everything on the menu.Unlikely to visit again as we're not from the area, however would highly recommend to anyone who is.

Fantastically run by Fiona and a very eager staff, the pub is dog friendly and offers a great choice of beers and cider, with a range of bar snacks as well as a varying main menu. The outside space is very limited which unfortunately detracts slightly from the overall experience. There are some lovely local walks that take in the pub and in this area of East Sussex you are never far from a footpath and a decent watering hole.Thoroughly recommend the Brewers Arms, for a lunch/dinner or just a quick pint !

Went with some friends to the first Pizza night and will be definitely going again to the next one, this time with a larger highly recommended group of friends! Authentically made and Mediterranean tasting pizza's. Loved the superb fresh ingredients and the great atmosphere throughout the evening. The staff and clientele were really friendly and welcoming, plus my Mediterranean other half was very impressed - bellissimo infact!! :)

This is a typical, attractive pub, located in a hamlet and pretty cut off from passing trade. The staff are friendly and helpful and ambience generally fine. The menu is long but quite clunky - not much light eating here and with such a long list there must be a big freezer. Not sure how home-cooked it all is either. I ordered a steak and ale pie which was generous in size and a proper pie tpp , crust top and bottom, packed with meat. BUT it had been sliced then blasted with heat, drying it up all over. My second complain is that as a "local" customers drop in with dogs. This is OK in principle but not around food, I feel. Dogs were everywhere while we were at table. Prices were high for ex-frozen starters; reasonable for mains.

Another delicious Sunday Lunch. Nothing is ever too much trouble for the friendly staff in this delightful cosy pub. Pet friendly indeed, we particularly enjoyed watching the elderly donkey being fed outside and banging her hoof on the door for her treat of a piece of bread for afters! Coming again soon. If your in Sussex, come and find Vines Cross, The Brewers Arms is a pit stop not to be missed.

We were regular visitors to the Brewers Arms , whenever we were visiting the area (2-3 times a year) up until a year or so when it closed for its refurbishments. We had always enjoyed the foods and knew the meats were sourced from the same butchers that we bought our meat from.We were delighted when it reopened, and took some friends with us to dine there one evening. The first thing to throw us, was the way the menu was arranged. Four different boards in various sizes and styles of chalkboard writing, set in the crowded main area of the pub. As there was 6 in our party, including children, it made it very difficult to sort out choices and it made it awkward to actually see everything properly due to the busy bar area. This prolonged the ordering process and meant that one of our party ended up with a different dish to the one that they wanted as there were 2 similar dishes on 2 different boards - although this being the case, we did wonder why the waitress did not check which one was being requested. There is no children's menu and we had to ask if these were possible. We were told smaller portions are available but not if this is a smaller cost. This information is important for parents trying to budget.Which brings me to the pricing. The Brewers Arms was never a budget option, but the food was very high quality and you left feeling satisfied. Our meal on this occasion was good, but not as good as in previous visits, yet our bill was much higher than in previous years. Annoyingly we had visited another pub locally the previous night, eaten and drunk more and paid £30 less.So we were very disappointed with the new Brewers Arms. I am sure it makes a lovely local, but its restaurant service needs to be better thought out to compete with other, similar local hostelry's

This is a pleasant little pub which has recently reopened. You can eat in the main bar or a separate dining area (if the bar is busy or noisy - it is, after all, the local pub). There is a wide choice on the menu with daily specials on a separate board. I had a starter of fried whitebait with tartare sauce - this is very easy to mess up, but this was one of the better examples I have eaten and it really tasted of the sea. To follow I had fish and chips. The batter on the fish was excellent and the chips can only be described as absolutely lovely. Sadly I could not manage a dessert, possibly because I had drunk two pints of the draught bitter (Harvey's of Lewes) which is well-kept and in super condition.I shall definitely return for more.

We were fortunate enough to happen upon this gem of a Gastropub while visiting beautiful East Sussex from Dublin. From the moment we arrived we were treated to a quintessential British country pub experience. Fabulous menu with extensive choice. Fresh, seasonal and locally sourced being the buzzwords. Very eclectic and catering to all tastes. All 4 of our dining party chose distinctly different meals, and each was equally as good as the other. Top marks for all food. My Hastings crab was particularly delightful and flavoursome. The pub itself is very bright and fresh and has wonderful touches such as a huge Charringtons ball shaped street lamp illuminating the menu blackboard. A classic adornment. Crisp, fresh flowers are strategically placed throughout and are no doubt a tasteful hallmark touch created by the delightful landlady Fiona. The perfect hostess, she made us welcome from the moment we arrived. She talked us through the menu in effusive terms and matched our drinks to our food choices perfectly. Just the right amount of visits to our table to make sure all was ok, and when we had finished our meal we had a good chat and shared many laughs as she recounted various tales of her visits to Ireland. We asked about certain touches with the food and were subsequently introduced to the lovely chef Mark, who came to our table so he could answer our queries directly, and he certainly did, with aplomb. We gladly paid our bill which we found very reasonable and when we chatted to Fiona again on the way out we were amazed to learn she had only taken over the pub and renovated it within the last few months. It felt like she had been there for years, running it with such grace and ease, and I certainly hope she will be doing so for years to come. A true British gem and well worth a visit to the Sussex countryside for. We have all vowed to return and I can't wait.

We had decided to take advantage of a lovely sunny evening to take a drive out and find a bite to eat. With no plans on where we were heading we came across the Brewers Arms. The welcome was warm, relaxed and friendly. The only problem we had with our visit was what to choose from the extensive and very tempting menu! And the reason atmosphere isnt rated at top is simply it was a little hard to judge on a very quiet Sunday evening. We shall be back

A good "Local pub" that has had a bit of a chequered recent past. Now in the hands of a Landlady that knows how it should be done. In short - it shows, and its very good. Good food, excellent service and proper beer. I am very pleased it has re opened. Give it a look - it's the best around.

Dreadful menu and terrible service. Menu was limited to say the least and they didn’t have what I wanted. Had breakfast there this morning and couldn’t have poached eggs only fried, reason being ‘we only have 1 chef’ ……a chef who can’t poach eggs!!!!
