After work drinks with my daughter. First visit here. Really busy, good atmosphere but really, really bright lights - for a pub. Ordered four small plates to share - Padron peppers, humous, chorizo and Scotch egg. All great. There was too much humous/not enough flat bread. We asked for some more bread, rather than waste the humous, and were told ‘you are the fifth customer in four days to ask for more bread. We pointed this out to the chef but that p*ssed him off’. Very odd. Needless to say, no extra bread!

Tried to find a place to watch the west ham conference league game midweek and the guys very kindly put the game on one of the two tvs. Our side was empty, but they still reserved us a table when I called. On the other side of the pub was a giant group of Roma fans watching their game, singing non stop with musical instruments and everything. Brilliant to see! We went back a couple of days later for another game and the staff were super nice again. Didn’t try to food, limited menu but the stuff coming out of the kitchen looked ok pub grub.

To our delight they were serving manzes pie and mash for lunch, so we went for it, ordered the food and drink, took drinks back to the table and the food followed shortly, the pie and mash was excellent, The pub was full of locals mix between old london and new london. The staff were friendly and helpful, the pub was clean and open, traditional on the outside and open plan bit more modern inside, great pub would visit again

Went here on a Tuesday night to watch the second half of a Champions League game with 4 of my friends. The pub was nearly empty with 6-7 other people watching the game and plenty of empty tables. As we were sitting down on one of the tables, the waitress/owner came to us to ask us if we are ordering a drink - we responded that we will, once we have a chance to leave our stuff and get to the bar. 4 of my friends went to get a drink but I decided I'd have enough to drink that night so asked for one of them to get me tap water. While 2 of my friends were still ordering at the bar, the waitress came to me and asked me what I'm having again - mind you, we had been in the pub for about 2 minutes at the time. I said I'm not having a drink, to which she rudely asked if I will be sitting at THEIR pub watching THEIR TV (emphasis for her tone) and not order a drink. I was pretty shocked as 4 of my friends were having drinks but I said yes, is that a problem and would you like me to leave? The waitress then rudely asked me to leave THEIR pub if I am not having a drink. My friends and I were all speechless and a few of the other people at the pub were equally confused. So I left and waited for my friends to finish their drinks and leave. I've been to hundreds of pubs and had never experienced anything like this. Safe to say I will never be returning so I guess the waitress/owner got what they wanted in the end.

The Bowler is a wonderful establishment, the finest pub in the Clerkenwell borough. When you walk in, you can already smell the rich scent of food, permeating throughout the restaurant. When you sat down, it was like sitting at a table made by the finest craftsmen in all of London, with a TV viewing area ready at your disposal. Many a time did I come in here and grab a pint while sitting down to watch a Sunday afternoon football match. Before you could even speak, a waitress would come with a food menu, ready to take your order. The Bowler had a lot of great food items, but none were better than the Burger, which ranked high on the list of delectable treats I had during my stay in London. The patrons inside the pub were also very cheery, often talking to me about world affairs and the current state of Arsenal F.C. When I left, I told myself I would come back, and I made it my home for the next 3 months. Best pub in London, bar none.

The Bowler has quite stiff competition in Clerkenwell and Farringdon not just from gastropubs like The Eagle, but also the wide range of top-notch eateries of all descriptions in and around Exmouth Market. Nor is it helped by being on something of a backwater behibd the bustle of Farringdon Road. This perhaps explains why, on a Friday lunchtime, when other nearby places were heaving, this place was far from full. Also it might be said that compared with the likes of Moro or even The Quality Chop House, the menu, comprising various burgers, and a few mains, supplemented by dishes chalked on a blackboard such ad fish and chips and flatiron steak, is not exactly imaginative. Nevertheless judging by the burger and steak my colleague and I respectively chose, the Bowler offers standard fare but exceptionally done. The flatiron steak whilst not quite of the quality of the one I had in Flatiron, Dennark Street earlier in the week (but one must bear in mind Flatiron serves steaks and virtually nothing else), came close to it. Nothing to complain about so far as the triple cooked chips were concerned. The peppercorn sauce was particularly good. Service was polite and efficient.

I was visiting London on business and happened upon The Bowler on Tuesday for lunch. There seemed to be one waiter on duty at the time. The pub was reasonably busy but he was very helpful, polite and knowledgeable about the food and drinks on offer (as I have some allergies) and didn’t make me feel like I was a hassle to him or the pub with all my questions (I worry I can be a bit of a pain at times but I was never made to feel that way). The food was ok, the portion reasonable etc. I would definitely visit again though as there was a nice vibe and good service. I’m shocked at the reviews I read about this pub (I read these after my visit) because this was not my experience at all. Admittedly, I only encountered one member of staff but he was very accommodating and polite. Perhaps they encountered different staff from me but I was very pleased with my experience there and I’ll be sure to return next time I’m down in London.

I went in for Friday pub lunch with some friends and left utterly disappointed. Even though we had made a reservation the waiter was incredibly rude, ignoring us when we arrived saying he was too busy and would get to us soon. We finally ordered drinks and food and 1 hour and 15 minutes later after asking for the food it finally arrived. Only my order did not arrive. I was then told that they had forgotten my order because of a mix up in the kitchen and they were working on getting it to me. No apology. Then 20 minutes later my order finally arrived and it was incorrect. I had asked for a burger without cheese and they smothered it in cheese. Since I did not feel like waiting for another 20 minutes and since my friends had all finished eating I just ate what I could from the order. Unfortunately the wait was not worth it. The burger was very dry and the bun tasted stale. In the past when someones order was forgotten the wait staff normally apologies profusely and rushes the order. That was not the case here. Although they did not charge for my burger, they charged for my drink which felt like was a little bit cheap. We also asked for a discount for the other orders being so slow and the waiter refused and shouted at us in the middle of the restaurant. Honestly I would give The Boweler a miss. Rude staff, slow service and bad food. All in all a pretty terrible lunch.

A friend and I were looking for a pub to watch the 6 nations this past Saturday. After perusing matchpint.co.uk, we decided on The Bowler due to the convenient location and the rave reviews on the matchpint site. We arrived for the later game (England v Scotland) around 4:30 with there being a bit of a crowd. There were chairs set up cinema style in front of a gigantic HD projector, as well as some sofas up front. We went to the bar to order some drinks and ask if we would be lucky enough to grab some chairs, or if they were already booked. The bartender directed us to the owner, Lee, who coincidentally had a cancelled reservation for one of the sofas and asked if we'd like to have that spot. Perfect! Since we had a place to sit, we also ordered two cheeseburgers which were pretty amazing and almost reason enough to visit the pub (unless you hate cheeseburgers). I think this might be my new sports pub!

This pub is great to watch a game and have a relaxing drink. With a large screen, projector and ample seating, this makes for a great atmosphere to enjoy your favourite sport. The service was good and the food was delicious and well-priced. The staff were friendly and overall this was a lovely experience. Will definitely be going back.

We visited The Bowler for a work lunch this afternoon, having intially booked a table for 8 another 5 colleagues decided they wanted to come too - being a bar we did not see this as being an issue. On arrival the waiter serving us was instantly rude and commented 'you should have booked for more, its easier to remove a table then add one' - not greatful for the extra custom, instead making us feel like we were an inconvenience. When taking our food order the same red faced waiter was again rude to 3 colleagues who had decided to just have a drink rather than eat, again making us feel like we had inconvenienced him by making him move table when some were only having a drink. The service didn't improve... when the food eventually arrived (after nearly and hour) one of our orders was wrong and another was missed and when we questioned this we were again treated like an inconvenience. The angry waiter who had taken the order butted into a conversation being had with the manager and said aggressively 'people shouldn't come into a restaurant and move tables' when we replied that this was outrageous customer service, he then replied 'well the customer isn't always right'. Not making any apology for missing the order in the first place. Needless to say neither myself or the rest of my colleagues will ever visit this pub again. We will stick to the Wilmington & Exmouth Arms where customers are treated decently and would recommend others do to.

Throughout the 3 games the service was excellent, friendly, and efficient. Food was fantastic, scotch egg heaven and heart stopping nachos. The manager has really taken out all the stops to ensure that the customers get exactly the type of atmosphere a rugby fan would want. If you do want to sit down, then definitely book ahead, but plenty of room to stand, jump up and down and yell as well.Would like to say thank you to the team for going that extra mile with the sticky toffee puddings at the end of the evening. Will be returning to work my way through more of the menu later.

I have been to the Bowler on multiple occasions now, and was never left disappointed. Their service, food and drink are always good. I have also been here on 2 occasions for work functions and the finger food and service for these big corporate events were fantastic! Everybody could not stop mentioning how nice the food was in comparison to the normal buffet style we are used to on nights like this.If you are in the area, be sure not to miss out - especially for BUrger Wednesday!

I came across this pup while searching for a place to watch the Euro 2012. It took me some time to to find a bar that would show the France vs Sweden game so I called the Bowler Pub to double check if they are going to show the game to be sure, before I arranged to meet my friends there. I was assured they have a few TVs and on one of them they will show that match. When I was in the bar watching the beginning of the game the manager came and simply changed the TV channel to the England vs Ukraine game. When I tried to explain I arranged to meet my friends here just because I was assured they will show the French/Swedish game he simply said that perhaps more people will like to watch the English game.So I would say they have no respect for the customer. And fair enough more people wanted to watch the English game (which they could do on the other 2 screens!) but why would you lie over the phone then? Very unprofessional and appalling customer service. I will never ever again go to this place that made me feel terrible and just spoiled the day for me and my friends. The place itself was just an old shabby pub and the food was very expensive for the quality you get. I would not recommend this pub to anyone, if you want to go to a place with a nice friendly atmosphere and receive some good customer service - avoid the Bowler Pub! There are plenty nice bars and pubs around in the area that you can go to instead.

Went there for business type lunch. Gastro pub like menu with a twist e.g. Chicken and chorizo pie. A £9burger was a bit wizened and chips were meager. My pie was ok,but could have been hotter. I guess it was a bit pricey for a pub lunch. Sausage and mash seems to be the thing to go for

We spent the day trawling through old records at the Metropolitan Archives and, when we went out to stretch our legs, were delighted to find this place just around the corner. The atmosphere was modern pub-like with table service and cheerful, friendly staff. They also had a huge screen showing Wimbledon tennis. The food was absolutely excellent. We both had bangers and mash (large portions of local Cumberland sausages with fluffy mash and onion gravy) for 8.50 GBP. Certainly the best I have eaten for ages. The menu included salads, specials, typical pub food (fish & chips etc) and vegetarian options such as Gazpacho soup, pea & mint risotto. We will certainly eat there again next time we are in quirky Clerkenwell and are very glad that we didn’t take a packed lunch with us to the Met Archives otherwise we would have missed this gem.
