So outdated... went on the say so of a friend who said “if you want the real Cockney experience to try L Manze”, but to be honest it’s was bland, boring and flavourless... it made school dinners look exciting. It might be a London tradition, but with so many other exciting options available I just wouldn’t bother.

Great atmosphere, nice staff. Plan a few more visits before it closes. Pie and mash is (regrettably) a dying London tradition, driven out by high property prices and business rates.

Me encantó.

No hubo tal suerte.

Established over 100 years ago and looks like nothing has been updated since. I ordered a pie and mash and got a very uninteresting pie, enormous quantity of mash covered in something that claimed to be parsley sauce. Awful. The restaurant has a lot of possibilities if one updated everything about it.

My 100th TripAdvisor review brings my close to my place of birth (Stoke Newington) and Manze's Pie & Mash shop. I happened to be in the area on a Friday afternoon and decided to pop in. I was moved away from London when I was 3, so in my 44 years, this is only the second time I've eaten London's famous Pie & Mash. I think the first time I was about 10 years old. Unfortunately I realised that I'm not a huge fan. It's an acquired taste. It's very difficult to say too much about this traditional London culinary institution, without being shot down in flames, except to say that you've probably tasted nicer mash, you've no doubt eaten a better pie, and the liquor - I just don't understand that. Personally I'd like a gravy!Anyway, it's great to see that this London institution remains popular with 'real' people of all ages, still enjoying the food served here at Manze's. Really, for me, that's all that matters. Long may it continue!

Please note - this review refers to Manzes in Walthamstow which I couldn't find to review individually. As it was somehere I'd wanted to visit for ages, I made the effort to travel for lunch from central London whilst in the capital for a couple of days. 15 minute walk from nearest tube. Really eye catching frontage to the cafe and the original features inside were equally nice. Was keen to try everything so I ordered pie, mash, eels and liquor. Despite being advertised as in importer of live eels, the sullen girl serving told me they weren't doing them! The pie, mash and liquor was as good as I'd hoped - everything tasted fresh and home made. I was surprised to be the only person in the place at 12 30 lunchtime, with busy market stalls going on outside! The outwardly unfriendly service I got may go some way to explaining this. The mythical warm East end welcome seems to be long lost.Would be a shame for places like this to disappear so try and make the customer leave feeling valued as well as extremely full.

Visited on Friday with the Pie & Mash Club. Been here a couple of times previously and wasn't impressed. Pretty much the same this time if not worse. For a start it's pricy, even for Islington. Secondly, the service is unsmiling with a hint of menace. There was a 10 minute wait for pies and after they had taken the cash they managed to get some of our orders wrong. Thirdly, the stewed eels I ordered were jellies eels warmed up. Lastly, (and most important) the pies are awful. Soggy bases and dubious meat content, gristle isn't an option here. They didn't have any fruit pies again. I've never known them to have any on either on my three visits. I won't be back

This is a difficult review, I have heard about pie and mash shops ad it was on my wish list.We went to Islington and upon entering the 1920’s we were welcomed and we ordered a double and single pie and mash. The pies were not as I expected, they were as Mary Berry would say “they had a soggy bottom” and the mash was ‘average’ but the liquor was not to my taste, it was simply awful.Yes I enjoyed the experience, but the food was not to my taste, I won’t be rushing back, I can’t really say much more, besides another knocked off my wish list. It has to be tried the once.

The real old Cockneys would give their right arm for a good old plate of pie & mash with liquor, or for the more adventurous, jellied eels. Having spent most of my formative years in and around London, I popped into Manze's in Chapel Market Islington yesterday and it was like turning the clock back 50 years or more. Pie & Mash and / or Jellied Eels is about the only choice, but what else would REAL Cockneys want? Sure it's not everybody's cup of tea but Double Pie & Mash with liquor (of course) and a cup of Rosy Lee all for £7.10 - go on try it - you know it makes sense !The décor is to die for - proper traditional wooden booths, marble slab tables, gleaming white tiles on the wall, old traditional lamps and a good old wooden clock on the wall. I was in heaven !

Out of curiousity when in Chapel Market, I thought it'd be nice to try a traditional English pie. I struggle for words to describe just how horrible this food was. The staff were quite pleasant, but they genuinely have no idea how horrendous their food is. None of it was edible, not even the mashed potatoes. Myself and my friend took two bites each, then just left. Absolutely disgusting.
