Sadly today’s visit was not to the usual standard I have experienced on previous visits to this lovely pub. Service was the most disappointing. Having made a reservation we were seated and given menus and drinks, then ignored. After about 10 mins a group of 4 unreserved were seated next to us, served drinks and menus and then there order taken whilst we were still ignored……. Not good service, naturally not impressed. When our food finally arrived very disappointing. Fish & Chips have always been excellent on previous visits but today greasy and soggy uncooked batter, fish with batter removed was fine. This was pointed out when the table was cleared and a small discretionary refund was on the bill when I paid, but not mentioned by any of the staff. Hopefully this was a one off situation and “normal service” will be resumed. I will certainly think twice about a return visit, shame as always been impressed by friendly service and quality of food.

Our favourite pub for a roast dinner. The meat is cooked to perfection and the potatoes and veg are tasty too! Definitely the best pub roast dinner we have found so far. The service is good and you don’t wait too long for the food to arrive. 10/10

We ate at the Bottle House tonight, our second meal there in a few weeks and this evening’s meal was just as good as our previous visit. We went back as it was the nicest meal we had had out in a long while. There is live music on a Friday evening and this was just wonderful! Will definitely visit again on a Friday evening and probably on other evenings too!!

Our new favourite place for Sunday lunch. The only disappointment was the Strawberry Pavlova unfortunately. More of a deconstructed dessert, two strawberries cut in half and four small bits of meringue. We were hoping for a more traditional approach and size of helping! That aside, everything else was wonderful!

Recently been here for lunch with family, sat on a lovely table tucked away from the bar. All had lovely drinks from fresh ale to great non-alcoholic options. Food was incredible, probably the best pub lunch I might have had? I only had the caesar salad and chocolate cheesecake so I will have to return again to try more!! Chicken was so juicy and the pudding was very different! Service was friendly albeit fairly slow. We got served drinks fast and ordered quickly but did take a very long time for mains and then puds. We had a two hour time slot on our table which meant soon after puddings we were asked to leave the table immediately. No problem but would have been nice to have abit more warning of when they needed the table as felt abit rushed at the end. Overall amazing experience and will be back!

We were a group of 9 people for dinner and from the booking all the way through to the end of the meal I couldn't find any fault with the staff, food and service. One of our group had a tomato allergy; she explained this when ordering her food and the waitress couldn't have been more helpful and understanding. Everyone said how wonderful their food was, beautifully presented, very tasty and the portions were just right. There was a good selection of dishes on the menu covering all the usual bases, steak, chicken, fish and vegetarian. The starters were especially interesting and different; I had moules with chorizo which was lovely. My understanding is they change the menu every month which ensures it stays appealing. Even though we were a large group, the food didn't take long to be served and all at the same time (which is one of my bug bears when you are sitting waiting for someone else's food to arrive). Good selection of wines from around the world at reasonable prices. We all had three courses and the bill came to around £70 per head including tips and pre dinner drinks. All in all a quality evening at a quality restaurant, thoroughly recommended.

This pub was a great find. A lovely outside terrace which was a fabulous place to enjoy the Spring sunshine. The lunch was excellent. A crisp pastry pie with lots of chicken and tarragon sauce. Truffle Chicken with Potato Terrine and a Madeira and truffle sauce was really enjoyable. My only criticism which will prevent me going back is no Amex.

Visited here for a family birthday on a Sunday . Very disappointed with the menu. On their website it says "As well as the a la carte menu, on Sundays we also cook three different kinds of roast with all the traditional trimmings". Well the a la carte menu consisted fish and chips, smoked trout, beef burger and a couple of other choices. Definitely not their usual a la carte. The large beef roast £20 was not large at all. 2 small slices of beef and the 2 men on the table were still hungry after they had finished. Having said that the service was good, there's a nice atmosphere in there and the food was very tasty.

Amazing roast- so flavourful! Party of 7, 4 roast beef and 3 roast pork. Great but don’t be mean. Size of cauliflower cheese served in 2 x side dishes pathetic… just put it on the plate as was the size of one desert spoon each. Also would suggest that the sauces of horseradish, apple shame and mustard are not quite so mean… the smallest little pot of horseradish for 4 people, same apple sauce for 3 and mustard the tiniest little lot for all. Atmosphere lovely, beer good, food excellent but make it exceptional with maybe bigger cauliflower cheese, extra potatoes in the centre and not scrimping on sauces. X

We are an Exclusive Dining Club, with members rotating in turn to host one of four events per annum. Our second event for 2023 was held at The Bottle House and what a great venue it turned out to be. A magnificent, cosy and charming building, with friendly and professional staff and excellent food and beverages. We began with Champagne and Canapes on the terrace and what a superb selection of Canapes they were. Fortunately our host for the day had not ordered hors d'oeuvres or we would not have managed to eat our main, desert and cheese courses. Being a traditional English pub/restaurant, our host selected the Shortcrust Steak Pie as our main course, which was complimented with Roasted Garlic Mash, Onions, Mushrooms, Tender Stem Broccoli and a Beef Jus. The accompanying Wines were perfectly matched to food. Rhubarb and Custard Trifle, followed by the House Cheeseboard and further matched Wines and Coffee were all delicious. This is a well run establishment, offering a fine selection of food and beverages, with appropriate portion sizes at sensible prices in a highly conducive setting. Congratulations and thank you to all involved. I know that our members will be returning individually to experience what you have to offer.

I had to write this review as, four days on, I'm still thinking about the lunch I had here. A large hunk of meltingly tender roast pork belly, served with wild garlic and almond pesto, and port jus. Truly outstanding; a very talented chef. Small plates and pub classics available as well as fine dining options. The pub, which is tucked away up a hill near Penshurst has a very nice feel to it - lots of beams, low ceilings and nooks and crannies, decorated in a light and contemporary style. Good beers from Larkins and Three Acre breweries, and an interesting selection of liqueurs flovoured with locally foraged ingredients.

We had a wonderful experience at the Bottle House with 19 friends and family, celebrating a big birthday. The service was slick but not rushed. The food was uniformly delicious - every plate was finished. The setting was fabulous with an area outdoors for drinks before lunch and a separate part of the pub for our party so it felt like a private venue. Prices are up everywhere but in this 'new normal' The Bottle House seemed good value.

When the food comes it is tasty. Unfortunately, the experience was let down by firstly only 1 real ale being on sale and more importantly, the service was painfully slow. It took over 30 minutes for the starters to arrive and that included olives and bread selection for the table. Mains arrived an hour after ordering. Start to finish 2 hours with no time for desert. Staff friendly but why so slow, it wasnt even very busy. Been many times before and it was never like this. It was a 60 mile round trip, which was always worth it in the past.

I had booked the Bottle House as a place for our family to celebrate my mum's 70th Birthday, I had always wanted to visit and was really pleased to find they have a private dining room (at no extra cost) to cater for up to 16 people. I called initially to discuss our various dietary requirements and was pleased to hear this wouldn't be an issue, all they requested was I send over the menu choices a week in advance. The pub is so lovely, full of all the character you'd expect from a 14th century establishment, so cozy and it was full to the brim with Sunday diners. We were escorted up to the private dining room which was delightful and exceeded expectations. Once everyone had arrived, our drinks orders were taken & promptly delivered, Paul, the duty manager on the day came up with my email and took us through all the menu choices just to make sure they had everything correct, plus accommodated a couple of additional guests with no problems at all.Nothing was too much trouble and we were so impressed that all allergies were being catered for no questions asked, not a single "you can't have that" so refreshing. We all had starters, mine was the crispy whitebait, the portion was very generous and really tasty, everyone really enjoyed what they had. The break between courses was perfect, we had time to let our food go down and never felt rushed or forgotten, simply put, the staff were perfect, checking in on us to make sure we were ok and if we needed anything. Our mains were fabulous with most of us choosing the Sunday Roast, I have to say the Belly of Pork was one of the best iv'e had. The meat literally fell apart and had the perfect piece of crackling, potatoes were plentiful and tasty, my only slight gripe would be that we found the cabbage a tad on the bland side, but the carrots were yummy. We also had to ask for more Gravy which they swiftly provided as there wasn't near enough, but that it personal preference. We didn't order pudding as I had made a birthday cake, but Paul helped carry everything up, plates, cutlery etc and left me to sort it which was great. We had coffees and one more round of drinks and finally let the staff go home around 5 hours later - it was just such a fantastic day, totally relaxed and my mum thoroughly enjoyed her birthday, and I got huge brownie points for choice of venue. I can't thank Paul and the staff enough for making the day so stress free and enjoyable, everything was great and we can't wait to return (on a smaller scale) for another meal - highly recommended.

Took my parents out for lunch today,my mum's birthday. They aren't the biggest of eaters which can be a problem as so many pubs serve enormous, off putting plates of food.Mum had soup of the day (butternut squash) with a decent portion of fresh bread and butter, dad had the small plate macaroni cheese which did slightly defeat him but he made room for honeycomb ice cream and I had a lovely, fresh ploughmans with thick sliced ham and cheddar and some decently pokey pickles. I had a wonderful lunch in the garden of Bottle House Inn this week with my elderly parents for whom this was the first meal out since before the first lockdown in March 2020. We were pleased to note that all staff were wearing masks or visors and stood well back when taking orders and that the tables were well spaced for social distancing and there was sanitiser available at the entrance and staff were clearly following the guidelines making customers feel at ease. This was an excellent place to take people who were going for their very first meal after lockdown and understandably a bit nervous about the whole thing. The food was lovely too - there were several options for me as a vegetarian and my parents loved the steal & ale pie. So, it's a lovely pub with nice staff. We booked a table for lunch at 1430 since this was the earliest. They informed us that there were delays but we didn't get any food on our table until after 4pm. This isn't why I'm giving the bad review. The reason is that the food was pretty much disgusting.T he whole roast chicken looked good but was severely overcooked and dry. The pork was overcooked. The potatoes were so overcooked it was practically impossible to cut them and the tasted bad. The gravy is cheap packet stuff. We were with friends so, as in typical British style I didn't make a fuss and my friend said the food was nice (God knows why). I've given an extra star because my daughter liked her pizza.

It was the first time back since lockdown and left feeling very disappointed. We were given a table in the bar area and as we were near the door it was very cold. I asked if we could close the door but was told they could not do that due to Covid guidance which I accept. However, I noticed empty tables for two in other areas and were not offered to move. They were nowhere as busy as I remembered they used to be. Tables still vacant when we left. A couple of the staff also patted dogs and did not wash their hands.Food was OK but Summer pudding disappointing as rather dry and lacked fruit juice. Surprised pub was fairly quiet compared with others we've been to in local vicinity and after our meal it was clear standards have really slipped which is a great pity. Staff pleasant enough and service ok but the quality of some of the food very questionable. The seafood platter was particularly disappointing- the mackerel was very good but the rest absolutely shocking. Small, rubbery prawns, dry nasty mussels and completely anaemic calamari- apart from mackerel everything else clearly frozen and overcooked. Nobody checked how food was halfway through and when our plates finally cleared and we were asked what we thought of meal (as most fish platter not edible it remained untouched) the waiter just responded with oh well we will have to try harder! Definitely the case but we will not return to find out...

Courtesy of Mr Sunak we enjoyed a cut-price and really delicious meal at the Bottle House on one of the hottest days of the year. We arrived to realise that many others had had the same idea, and frankly we were expecting a long wait for service - but no, our order was taken quite quickly, our drinks (beautifully cold) arrived promptly and so did the food. Which we couldn't fault - huge fish and chips with home-made tartare sauce, a perfectly cooked medium-rare steak which was slightly charred outside and succulent within, and a very good chicken, leek and ham pie. We didn't have room for pudding, but the chocolate brownie looked amazing! All this enjoyed in the peaceful setting of the Bottle House beer garden. I take my hat off to the staff - it was so hot, they must have been exhausted, but they managed to be both efficient and good-humoured. Can thoroughly recommend the whole experience.

My wife and I had dinner at the Bottle House last night, the food and service was second to none. I had the mixed fish platter and my wife had the ploughman’s, we shall definitely return.

Visited for an evening meal soon after the pub reopened. Served up a thai curry which had hairs in it. Was told this was fibres from the lemongrass....well, yes, they were there too but I did look long and hard before deciding to complain. No great way to treat a customer with the implication being that I did not understand what I was being served. Took their time to react and the Chef did not bother to come to the table to sort the situation. Not what you would expect, especially in the current Covid climate. Other food was fine, but service was slow and our evening out was wrecked. Too slow to try to rectify and too late for any alternative to be worthwhile. They kindly did not charge us for the rejected meal.

Wow, what a find. The perfect country pub. Genial hosts, beautiful location and fabulous food. We were driving around the area when we came across the excellent little bottle signs on the edge of the lanes around Penshurst. The bottle house was everything you wanted it to be for a lovely relaxed afternoon lunch. We had the pie, which was steak and ale. Probably one of the best pies I have ever had and the burger, which was also great. Thank you, we will definitely be back.

Supper at the Bottle House last night...outdoors so a bit chilly but the food was great. Shared a sea food platter , then pork belly for me and a small fish and skinny chips for my wife.A warm welcome from mine host and friendly efficient staff. Not as busy as we had expected, so come on everyone, support this excellent pub/restaurant!

Have just had a great take away from the bottle house for Father’s Day. What can I say but thank you guys it was as good as if we had sat in the restaurant. The pork belly was cooked to perfection, the greens were succulent and the mash tasty and we even had a pot of gravy each. This was then followed by the best summer pudding and chocolate brownie, each with its own pot of cream and accompaniments. My dad was so pleased with the free Larkins given as it was Father’s Day. Thank you and look forward to ordering again. Michelle

We tried The Bottle House takeaway menu during "lockdown". What a great idea. We ordered online and gave a date and time for pickup. The Bottle House phoned us back to confirm the order and make payment by card. On the date, we arrived at the pub and within minutes, we received our food - piping hot and well insulated. When we got home, we were delighted with the quantity and quality of our starters and Sunday Roast. Well done The Bottle House.

Visited for a family meal with our children. Felt like they couldn’t even chat beyond a whisper, let alone stand up etc. They had colouring provided, but was very much a case of ‘to be seen and not heard’.Bottom line - if you do not want children in your pub, don’t have them!By all accounts, beyond getting up once, they were very well behaved. It also appeared that other tables were visited by the manager in a positive way, except us.Felt extremely uncomfortable, could not wait to leave, and would not revisit if you paid me.Very happy to take our money of course!I would like to add that the food was very good.

We hadn’t been to the BH for almost two years, and decided to have a light lunch here. I don’t if the management has changed in the past two years, but from the warmth of the greeting and being offered a choice of tables, it felt a lot better than how we vaguely remembered it.My wife had a Ploughman’s and I had the crispy beef salad with ginger and sweet chilli sauce. I thought the crispy beef had superb depth of flavour and texture combination. The Ploughman’s is offered with a many combinations of which cheddar and chicken parfait were selected with warm ciabatta; all good with a variety for salad leaves, pickle etc.A big shout out goes to the incredibly jolly lady that served us. She was exceptionally engaging without being over powering, and that is a rare thing these days.I think we will return well within the next two years.

There were four of us and we had booked a table, but it wasn't necessary as the place was pretty much empty with only one other table in use. The service was good and we enjoyed our selection of food and wine. I had the venison which was delicious. The place is really welcoming and deserves a bigger clientele, perhaps weekends are busier.

Been here a few times and overall it's not bad, but feel the roast could be better. Potatoes were not crispy, Yorkshire pudding was a little chewy and the gravy glutinous. Meat was good as was the other veg. Just little things, but need improvement.

Good traditional pub. Service wasn’t great this time. (Came on Sunday 23rd for lunch) Waited for ages to be spoken to when we walked in despite about 4 staff running around. We were the only people there, just standing by the bar. Would have helped to be acknowledged. Sat down, eventually, wrong drinks order taken, and I am sure my pork shoulder was actually beef. The sauce was great though. Will go back but they need to be a bit more organised on service.

Visited on a blustery Saturday evening on the off chance for dinner. Although pretty busy, we were warmly welcomed and seated.Good selection of beers and wine fairly priced. Service was fast but not pushy. The lamb shoulder rendang melted off the bone and rice and salad spicey and fresh, the venison pie was also top notch and felt homemade. Great food, service and atmosphere in a unpretentious setting. Other pubs in Penshurst could learn a lot. We will definitely be back soon to try the roast!

Unfortunately didn’t step up to the plate. Two of us dined here for a light lunch. Having ordered two sandwiches the basic order was messed up resulting in one being started from scratch killing the relaxed country atmosphere we hoped for.

We'd booked a table at the Bottle House to have a family get together and meal. The pub (as always) is charming and exudes character and Christmas spirit.

Went there on a late Sunday afternoon for a roast dinner but was bitterly disappointed as it come up half warm/ half cold, especially the Yorkshire pud and vegetables.

Visited for Sunday lunch, the menu is quite substantive for such a meal with a choice available for everyone’s taste, the food is very well prepared and the lamb I had melted in ones mouth; portion size is certainly one of the best I have come across.

In very good estate, somewhat cramped tables so ware the ambient noise. Ambitious extensive mixed style menu, reasonable "specials", house wine good value, wines on offer over-priced at £40 a bottle. A pleasant occasion 7/10 rather than 4/5

Have been several times over the years and has always been good . Visited today , it was really quiet ... I had prawn sandwich , tasteless prawns, tasteless Marie rose, thin sliced white bread . Husbands lamb curry was dry & uninspiring . Service was completely lacking . Pub & toilets were very clean, but we won’t be coming back

Came here for dinner with my husband on a Saturday night in August- despite restaurant not being busy, we were sat at a cramped table so close to another couple we felt we were intruding. Windowsill and shelving next to our table was filthy, covered in dust and clearly hadn't been cleaned for a while.

It was too hot to sit in the garden so our rowdy group of 12 came inside for lunch. Lovely old building, kept well and kept clean. Very relaxed, friendly service. Took a little longer than we’d have hoped to bring the meals out (considering it was very quiet) but the food was good, nicely presented, tasty and generous. There was no vegetarian option on the children’s menu, but they were able to adapt the choices for one of our party with no fuss. Fair prices- I’d certainly go back.

Normally a place I’d visit with family and somewhere I’d always had a great time. Tonight however (Friday night) I was greeted with two of the worst female staff I’d ever come across! Rude, miserable and disengaged. Incredibly disappointing, not interested in helping with allergies ( a member of our party was gluten free) and generally acting as if they didn’t want to be there.

We had a leaflet through the door so decided to try out this place, Found out that my brother and some friends had been here years ago and enjoyed it. They are open long hours so a late Sunday lunch was perfect for us. Two starters, two mains and two puds plus a bottle of wine came to less than £70. Plenty of choice, freshly made, a great place we shall return to in the future.

Costa Café is a gem! From the moment we walked in, we were welcomed by the friendly staff, especially the one with the amazing tattoos, Nina--they were so warm and attentive. The atmosphere felt relaxed and inviting, with locals chatting and even offering great suggestions on places to visit and things to do in the area. The coffee was perfectly brewed, and the treats were delicious, making it the ideal spot to relax and recharge. Highly recommend stopping by for a cozy, welcoming vibe and top-notch coffee!

Add coffees before we went around the house and there were plenty of tables both inside and outside. Having visited the house we then went back for some lunch and had a variety of items from the menu. All items were very tasty and well presented. The staff on the counters were fine. They could’ve been a bit more efficient doing hot drinks when there was a big queue, else food and service was really good.

I had a couple of hours to kill while on business in Sevenoaks, and fancied an all day breakfast. I googled and found this little place off the beaten track (didn't want to pay for parking!). Really tasty full English breakfast and a good cup of coffee, and ever so great value at £8.00. Maybe not the greatest venue, but definitely worth it for the food.

I’ve been going to this cafe on and off for 10 years. I have to say my experience has gone downhill since Covid. My recent visit has been very disappointing . I ordered a Spinach and Mushroom Quiche with salads. First of all, the Quiche was still frozen in the middle. Secondly, I didn’t even have time to argue because my daughter has been stung by a wasp. Totally understood this is normal in warm weather but the Cafe’s reaction has been shocking. I went to the counter to ask for some ice. It took at least 5 mins for the waiter to get it despite I can see a bag of ice lying on the table with 1 waitress standing next to it chatting to another lady. I asked can someone just give me the ice as my daughter is crying in pain. I was told someone has gone to get first aid and they can’t “just give me the ice”. After another 5 mins, the first aid has finally showed up. After asking what happened, his words are: oh…..I’m afraid there is not much I can do. I said can you grab me some ice please? It is at that point we finally got the ice!!! I washed my daughter’s wound with some soapy water after a quick google on what to do. I’m not a fully qualified first aid by no means. The cafe has an outside sitting area and wasp sting would be very common. Pleas train your staff on what to do or get some wasps trap like Polhill did. Very disappointing and I would have to end my visit after 10 years. Service standard has gone down too. Most of them look like they don’t want to work there and have a terrible attitude.
