The Bothy in Perth & Kinross

I’m embarrassed (for the restaurant) to write this review. But here goes… We booked a table for six people for 2.30pm on Saturday. We were contacted at 1.48pm, telling us that they “had a problem” starting their shift (!) and that they would take us at 3.30pm… So we delayed our lunch for an hour. When we arrived at 3.30pm (to an empty restaurant), the waitress was surprised to see us. We mentioned our text which received a quizzical response from her. She then explained that firstly she had just started her shift, secondly the text hadn’t come from her and thirdly the chef had also just arrived. She said that they would “probably” start serving food after 4pm but that there were plenty of restaurants down the road who would have space for us. So we went to Pacos (down the road) and had a really excellent meal. On the way back up the road, we looked into the window of The Bothy and I was (un)surprised to see a couple of tables of customers with booze but no food. Whilst I am hopeful that we might have been served eventually, had we waited for the chef to get his/her act together, I am not certain that we’d have been served this side of Christmas - we’re currently in August - which is a shame since I can’t wait that long (I’m in charge of trifle this year). But seriously, this was bad communication and terrible customer service. Avoid this restaurant- go to Pacos instead!

The Bothy cancelled our confirmed booking the morning we were due to go, because they weren't going to be open! I had booked hotel rooms specifically near Perth as part of a trip, because we were going to the Bothy. If I wasn't going to the Bothy, I would have stayed elsewhere. This used to be a cracking restaurant. What's happened to it?

Visited The Bothy with family as a special treat and we were left terribly underwhelmed. The female server was very pleasant but that was the only positive. The Grilled Chicken Supreme was quite honestly pathetic and the "dauphinoise potatoes" were certainly not dauphinoise, the chicken piece was minute and the dish was luke warm. The Fish & Chips were ok'ish but the fish was over fried and greasy. As it was a special treat we had a dessert each, the Sticky Toffee pudding again was luke warm, the Lemon Posset came with two pieces of shortbread straight out a packet, and the "Strawberry Gel" which was supposedly drizzled on the Dark Chocolate Mousse was the same you'd get on a Mr Whippy ice cream straight from a squeezy bottle! Both the posset and the chocolate mousse came in drinking glasses more akin to having a coke in and looked like they'd been sitting in the fridge with cling on top for several days. At £19 for the chicken, £18 for Fish & Chips then £7 for each dessert we were left very disappointed. To add insult to injury there was a 10% service charge of over £8 added to our bill! I decided not to query any of this as we didn't want a fuss and it was our first time out after losing a member of our family. Really disappointed and we won't be back which is a real shame.

I visited The Bothy in Perth on Saturday evening at 1830 with 3 friends for dinner. The young girl who served us was very pleasant. She did have a long list of things that were not available on the menu. We ordered our food and didn't have too long to wait, which was good. My sister had ordered fish curry and she said the curry and rice was stone cold. The waitress was very apologetic and took it away to get reheated. The curry came back but when my sister started to eat it she couldn't find any fish in it, it was all just sauce. She didn't want to complain again, so just ate it. I had fish and chips which was very nice, although the peas were cold. When the waitress came back to take the plates she asked if curry was better and we told her, yes it was hotter, but contained no fish. She said she would let the chef know. We were going to order dessert, but going by the standard of main course, we decided not to bother. When the bill came, we were charged full price for the curry. We will certainly not be in a hurry to go back, which is a shame!

Delicious dinner & lovely restaurant. First time & would recommend. Good choice on menu & reasonable priced. Attentive staff but no gap between starter & main course. Otherwise it was delicious. Loved decor & general ambiance!

Went in for lunch today with a friend and had an excellent time. Great service from both David and Abbey. Prompt drinks orders, recommendations from the menu and just overall great friendly chat and atmosphere. Will definitely be back!

This place has gone down hill had the worst service I have ever had in a restaurant in my life. To start it off we went early as it was my dads birthday and had a concert booked after so booked for 5.30 it wasn’t busy took ages to get even drinks ordered which when they came were popped on the table the bottle of wine was not checked it was the correct one or even poured for us. While seated at least three tables got up and got their own drinks from the bar while a young male waiter walked about not doing very much. The young waitress that did take our order after 40 mins in the place was lovely and running around looking like she was about to have a melt down I felt very sorry for her, our meal took ages to arrive and when it did the whipped goats cheese was not whipped at all but by that point we didn’t even complain. The mains then took ages to come out, we did say to the manager about was there a issue tonight and he just said I’ve spoke to the chefs twice to hurry up no sorry or can I chase that up that the meal was coming. The food was nice but due to the service I will be reluctant to return. While there we seen half of tables being served dinner and the others waiting 30 minutes more for there meals and at least three tables left without even ordering while we were in. It was very poorly ran and the customer service was very much not there which is a shame as I have had some very nice meals and drinks here before.

Short staffed. One person serving for 40 people nice friendly girl . Two people working behind bar , we were down stairs we had to go upstairs to the restaurant to get drinks, no one collected any glasses Water glasses on our table, no water No soup spoons on table, got soup spoons for dessert food soup ok , chicken like rubber , potato stogie people we’re finish there food and still waiting on risotto. Manger rude apparently short staffed up stairs was empty, no wonder over all awful

The service was excellent. Rachel and Brooke were very friendly and helpful. They knew the menu very well. If you had any questions they did their best to answer them. The food was superb. We both went for the Sunday roasts. I had the beef and my hubby had the pork. Both were cooked to perfection. It was so tasty that both plates were cleared. The portion size was spot on.

Place looks lovely but waited 20 minutes to get our drinks and then an hour later and our food still hadn’t arrived so we had to leave due to other commitments. I asked when the food would be ready 40 mins in and was told they had limited chefs. That should have been communicated at the start or it would’ve been prudent for someone to come over and advise us of this. We didn’t have to pay for drinks so that was something at least. I would recommend to communicate to your customers if there will be a delay instead of letting them wait for an hour.

Food and service was very good and prices reasonable. Made welcome by David and Brooke and put extremely at ease with their pleasant manner and attentive service

Used to like The Bothy but not any more. Still a great location but minimal staff, no atmosphere, poor menu and a rude waiter. We just left and won't be going back.

Valentine's meal let down. We arrived early for our booking and there was one other table in the restaurant. The waiter advised that this was not an issue at all and gave us the choice of two tables and asked if we wanted the valentine's menu or the normal one, we said that we would have a look at both. We were only brought the normal menu. We waited 20 mins for a drinks order to be taken 20 minutes after that the manager I assume came and advised us they had no basil for the pineapple mojito. So i asked if it would be possible to use mint instead. The manager screwed up he's face and said no that won't work. So we had the mojito with no mint or basil that tasted sour and horrendous (off lime juice) on a side note I was a cocktail bartender for 10 years so i know this was the case the mojito was served in a coupe glass with a couple of bits of ice . The beer I ordered was okay however. The food was below average, the burger came partly warm however the chips were good though! My partner had the Cesar salad which was bland but edible. We then ordered another round of drinks. Another sour cocktail and a beer came to the table but the waitress couldn't put them on the table as it was full of empty glasses and plates . Once the plates and glasses were cleared we then got our drinks. We then had a look at the dessert menu. Chose our desserts to be told they only had chocolate or strawberry ice-cream so we couldn't have the sundae. After another 40mins we asked the manager to check on the desserts as we had been waiting a while and had a film booked in 15 mins.to leave the manager said he would go check and we had said if they were going to be longer that 5 more minutes we would leave them as we would miss our film. We then had the two desserts brought to the table that had obviously been sitting on the pass under a heat lamp and the ice cream had melted all over the plate and the winter berry dessert was a handful of musli with a crushed meringue and a warm raspberry on top. We then asked for the bill straight away with the card machine and paid. I said to the manager as we were paying that the berry dessert was very dry and not good but we would still pay as we just needed to go to our film. The manager then told us that that's how it's meant to be and that's the way the chef designed the menu while laughing. Really not the best way to deal with a customer complaint. Over all a shame as we had heard good things about the place however I don't think we will be rising back anytime soon. £70 in total for 2 mains, 2 poor desserts and 4 drinks ( that was with a 20% discount from booking a film at the cinema). Poor food, Poor drinks and poor customer service.

STUMBLED ON THE BOTHY BY CHANCE LOOKING FOR A SNACK LUNCH BEFORE THE CINEMA WE WERE MADE VERY WELCOME BY DAVID WHO INFORMED US OF DEALS AVAILABLE WE LIKED THE AMBIENCE AND FOUND THE MENU VARIED AND REASONABLY PRICED WHAT WE CHOSE WAS TASTY AND WELL PRESENTED

Christmas Day Lunch - Unmitigated Disaster. We booked and paid about £70 a head for Chrismas Day lunch months ago thinking it would be a special family treat. How wrong could we be. Booked for about 20 people for 3.30pm in the private downstairs room....

Terrible experience , never to be repeated , asked for the Xmas lunch menu , when ordering informed all 4 ppl at the table had to order off the same menu, there was nothing on the menu or in the restaurant visible with that information. Very slow service, water on table given but had to ask for glasses. Soup obviously heated up in the microwave in bowl and wasn't thoroughly heated through. Burger was obviously pre heated , and fish was tasteless with soggy batter. Chips were hot, the only plus. The worst part of the dining experience was getting slapped with a 10% service charge with no notification , only aware after bill was issued. Sooo disappointed none of our party will be returning.

Visited here as part of company xmas lunch. We had pre ordered our meals. We sat down at 3pm. We ordered drinks on arrival and 3 ish and this was the last time we were asked if we wanted any more drinks. At 335 we received our starters after a long wait. The main courses came. The plates were cold. the food could be described as look warm with the turkey and trimmings. The brussels sprouts were extremely overcooked at some point and cold. The feather blade had been pre cooked and appears to be pre heated. All in all the service was very poor. Hospitality businesses are looking for support at a difficult time in the economy and this business has sadly failed to deliver therfore i will not be back.

Very poor, not a busy place, 4, maybe 5 tables occupied should have raised alarm bells the week before Christmas. Ordered drinks, but no lime cordial for soda water and lime, ordered food, 3 Cullen skink, tasted great but not hot enough, ordered burger but told no meat courses available except sausages, asked about a christmas lunch but told only available if ordered in advance...Wow, a week before Christmas!!! On paying bill staff did not honour menu offer of 2 menu items for £20 stating that this was not on offer during December. I accept that as that is a busy time of year, but why did menu still have offer on it and why were we not informed (verbally or on an amended menu) that the offer was not available before we ordered. Staff obviously under pressure and embarrassed to tell us they had a busy time that affected their supplies. Very poor management that appears not to be able to manage appropriate staffing levels or be able to cope by ordering food/drinks to support busy times and what was on the menu. And at christmas time, only able to order christmas food in advance. We certainly will not be back and would not recommend this restaurant

This restaurant was so disappointing when we went, there was a lack of atmosphere in the place as it was only about half full. Which was surprising as it was the week before Christmas ! It cerainly looked on arrival as if there was a lack of staff as well, which borne out, by having been sitting for nearly an hour & a half, we had only been served our starter. We complained, paid for the drinks, but not the starters & left. Will not be back again

Booked for Xmas lunch. Restaurant wasn't at all busy but we waited a really long time for starters and had been sat down an hour and a half before the main arrived. No apologies and were never asked if we wanted more drinks in the 3 in hours it took to wait around for our food. The soup was lukewarm, cauliflower steak tiny and unpleasant tasting and although the deserts were fine, that appeared to be because they were out of the freezer. Really poor service and mediocre food served lukewarm at best. With Tabou, Deans, Paco's and all the lovely rural restaurants, I'm not sure how the Bothy is managing.

6 of us went to the Cocktail master class with Thomas. He was knowledgeable and lots of fun and he helped make the night great special. The venue was warm and friendly and the drinks great. Cosmopolitan, French Martini and Prosecco, great value for money too!

Took ages to take our drinks order (15 minutes). Ordered prawn cocktails. Room temperature prawn cocktail, ( by prawns think farmfoods frozen shrimps) salad accompaniment had been there since Moses was a lad. Sent it back. The manager came over full of hell ' a very popular dish, no complaints before, prepared fresh every time' I know a dried oot cucumber when I see one. Not surprised it half empty on what should have been a busy night.Will not be back.

Gave the Bothy a second go and unfortunately this wasn’t great. The advertised rib eye steak and jazz deal was more like a thin frying steak, we did wonder why my partner wasn’t asked how he’d like his steak cooked! The chicken dish was barely warm and lacked the flavours described on the menu. Service from 3 waitresses and one was lovely. Cocktails were good and the piano player in the background also very good… made it a nice atmosphere. Sorry Bothy but we won’t be back

Eaten in the Bothy several times over the last decade. Understand its not long re-opened post lockdown. Lovely place inside. Decor rustic and relaxed. However the food never that brilliant and this time no different. Its average. Never been to a restaurant with such loud music blaring. We asked for it to be turned down. Service bit all over the place at times. Its a good restaurant but not the top for cuisine in Perth - thats Tabou!

We ‘hired the whole of the Bothy’ for Sunday Lunch for 80 people. That’s a big statement and a big ask of any restaurant. The Bothy were superb. The food was delicious, hot and lots of it. The staff cared that we had the best experience possible and nothing was too much. A first class effort from beginning to end. Thank you so much …and your rapidly becoming a Perth institution and ‘go to place’ for Sunday lunches. Big 5*

Well, how do I start? We booked in here for a pre theatre dinner. In fact, they are publicised as a "sister" establishment to the theatre. I had booked on line for 6pm. It said quite clearly that if you are more than 15 minutes late, your table is forfeited. We had driven over 2 hours to get there and arrived at 6.07pm. Sat Navs! However, by time we were attended to at the door, it was past 6.15pm. Yes we were 7 minutes late! The manager said, he would see what he could do to find us a table! Having driven over 2 hours, I needed the loo. I am disabled and walk with a stick. I was then told that the disabled toilet was out of order. I had asked in my booking for an accessible table, but no one thouĝht to let me know, there was no access to a disabled loo. I then had to climb down and up a steep flight of stairs with my able bodied companion assisting me. All a real effort! We did get a table reasonably quickly, but it was all downhill from there. We waited 20 minutes for our drinks. When we placed our food order, we told the waitress, that we were going to the theatre around the corner at 7.30pm. Then we waited and waited! My husband went and spoke to the manager and said we were going to the theatre. We waited and waited! Our meal eventually came at 7.02 pm! Almost an hour after we had arrived! I have never eaten a meal so quickly! If we had enough time, it was in fact quite tasty, but we were so stressed by this time, we just wolfed it down. I asked for the bill as soon as the food arrived. Even that was not straightforward! Their website says that if you show your theatre ticket, there is a 20% reduction. I showed the waitress the tickets, but she did not know how to do it, so off she went to find out. This was the only redeeming feature of the whole evening, a reduced bill. There was no leisurely pudding or coffee. We left and got into our theatre seats just as the act had started. To say we were disappointed would be an understatement. I was livid! As a disabled person, I do not often go out, so had been looking forward to the evening. Only this morning, I realised that I had ordered a garden salad which never came. Just as well, as I would not have had time to eat it. A restaurant who advertises themselves as a sister establishment to a theatre should have better systems in place to deal efficiently with theatre patrons! All in all, an awful experience! By the way the theatre was brilliant!

Beautiful decor and setting in Perth City Centre, however would rate food and service average. Not an unpleasant meal just average. Service lacking to get orders correct and then I was reminded when paying there was a small 10 percent charge for service.

Not the best service. Sat for 20 minutes before a drinks order taken. No starter but waited another 35 minutes on the food. Paying the bill, wasn’t asked how everything had gone. Can’t recommend.
