A very lucky find after missing our turn to Salisbury! Such a warm lovely welcome. The friendliest staff. Loved the sausages. Wonderful log fire. Thankyou!

We were staying at the nearby Stonehenge Campsite and walked over for dinner. Warm welcome and super friendly service. We were offered a choice of tables in different areas, which was lovely. We opted for the Halloween Special grill menu which was sensational. Beautifully cooked and great blend of flavours. Children’s meals were equally good quality and delicious. Happy atmosphere, great food and sensational service. Thank you

We met at the Boot as it is situated halfway for family to meet up for lunch. It is perfectly situated in a small village just off the A303 in a small village. On entering the cosy bar you are warmly welcomed by the team and shown to the table, doesn’t matter which one as they are all perfectly positioned, not too many to be on top of each other. The menu is small but is designed for all tastes and no request for a variation to the dish is denied, for instance, hassleback potatoes instead of new potatoes and chunky chips instead of mash etc. The food was absolutely perfect and the care and attention to every table was wonderful, they made you feel you were the only diners in a room of many! A tribute to the wonderful team that work there from the chefs to the staff. Thank you!

This place is a half way spot to meet family. We decided to try it but was unsure due to old reviews from the previous owner. But wow!! was a lovely lunch we had and the new owners were great!. The staff could not be more attentive, we ordered a brisket baguette with fries and beef gravy and it was just fabulous and my sister ordered a Brie and onion tart with fries and salad and she loved it, so much so she wished she could have take a tartlet home and she is super fussy!!! Every mouthful was just gorgeous. The pub is super quirky and old, but warm and lovely to be in and they have a huge tent with heating and benches and looks great. I wish the new owners well with the adventure and thank you to an ex Marco Pierre White chef, your food was brilliant. We will meet you again soon

Absolutely amazing food and the staff were fantastic, welcoming and friendly. Went with a large group 20+, all food came out promptly and at the same time. I had the Scotch Egg starter and have to say, it was something special. So much so other members of the group ordered them to follow their main meal. For my main I had the Cider battered Hake and chips, another triumph, probably the best fish and chips I've ever had. Everyone at the table were complementary on every dish they had. Will definitely be visiting again if in the area.

Warm, friendly welcome from all the staff, relaxing atmosphere, beautiful set up with the addition of the bell tent outside, picture perfect. We booked dinner reservations, and nothing was too much trouble, even when we changed tables. The food was cooked fresh, the fish and chips were the best I've had, the fish was cooked in a locally brewed cider, which in turn made the batter very light and the fish more enjoyable. The pub was just a short walk from where we were staying, although staff are happy to order taxis for those who need one.

How disappointing this Boot Inn Sunday lunch was. Despite phoning and booking on the Thursday before for a 12.00 lunch we arrived to be told there was not a booking and they don't serve lunch until 13.00 but they took a booking for 12.00? There was no room inside to eat so sat in the garden but had to pull 2 tables together as there was 8 of us. we ordered and waited and a lady brought out a plank of wood with roast potatoes and 2 small bowls of cauliflower cheese 4 slices of stuffing and gravy . We asked if this board was for just one of the tables the girl said she would ask for some more to be sent out. The meat cam out already plated and we managed to give every one 2 roast potatoes. The lady came back and said we could not have any more Roast potatoes or Cauliflower cheese as they were busy! So no one had any Suet pudding it just did not come. 4 people had stuffing and 4 people had cauliflower cheese! I don't think that is what you would expect for a Sunday Lunch

We booked for Sunday lunch based on a recommendation but were very disappointed. First impressions after being seated were how dusty the window cills and furniture were. You could write your name in the dust. Of the three starters, one was sold out so we chose the duck pate which was nicely presented and quite tasty, although the bread portion could have been more generous. For mains we chose the Topside of beef, and Roast Pork. When they arrived, the plates were not heated, so the food itself was just about warm. The roast potatoes were served separately on a wooden board and again were not very hot. The beef was served pink and was flavourful but the pork was in fact belly pork and not roast pork as described on the menu. It was also quite tough. We sent both plates back to the kitchen to be reheated and my pork was replaced with another serving of belly pork. This was very fatty but at least the small amount of meat on it was more tender. The vegetables on the plate were the smallest portions I have ever seen on a Sunday roast and the gravey was thin and watery. The Yorkshire puddings were like cardboard and inedible. We discussed the issues with the pork with the waitresses and they agreed the menu description was incorrect and this would be taken up with chef, and they also took the pork off the bill. The staff were very courteous and tried to remedy the situation even offering to change my second serving to something else, but by that time we just wanted to finish up and get out of there, and we won’t be rushing back.

Decided over breakfast to pay Berwick St James for a good walk up on the Downs and as it was such a nice day pop into The Boot as we hadn’t been here for some years. There were spare tables in the garden and so popped in. We were greeted with the “Have you booked?” No we replied but we’re happy to sit in the sunshine in your garden. “We can’t do you food as we’re fully booked” May be I am missing something but firstly a “Good afternoon” might have been a better greeting and secondly why on a beautiful sunny Sunday wouldn’t ( a long time coming this year) wouldn’t enough Sunday roast food be prepared to cover the outdoor seating🤔 Not even offered drinks or a snack. Still we had a lovely lunch albeit minus a beer at the Village Farm Shop.

Myself and my partner dined here on Saturday the 20th April and had a stunning meal. We were greeted with a warm welcome from the young girl with brown hair behind the bar who quickly sorted us a table even though we hadn't booked. The pub was bustling with regulars and had a great atmosphere. Once seated food and drinks order was taken swiftly and starters arrived within 10 minutes - camembert and squid which was really yummy- it was good too as there was plenty of bread for dipping. Main courses - pork and beef arrived shortly after and were simply divine, beautifully presented and full of flavour. We finished off our meal with sticky toffee and a cheesecake which did not disappoint. The same girl who greeted us served us throughout the night, and she was so attentive, checking back on each course. Will highly recommend and be coming back to try your sharing platters from the smoke House!! Bought the chef- Richard a pint to say thank you and he popped out to say hello, it was really refreshing speaking to someone who clearly has a passion for what the they do. We didn't have our dog with us, but dogs were welcome too!! We wish you every success!

Good beer, well kept. Limited food choice with only one vegetarian dish. Side vegetables good. Vegetarian dish tasteless. Roast meat dishes OK. Good sized servings. Service poor. Coffees served lukewarm so sent back. Only one coffee choice. Tea choices limited. Mess-up over pudding order and replacement was not as ordered. On a cold very wet day it would have been good to have had the real fire but it was not lit. Old pop music in background, fortunately not very loud. This pub used to be very good. I was suspicious when i could book a Sunday lunch table at short notice (not usually easy in this area) and there were many unoccupied tables.

Walked to The Boot Inn in Berwick St James from the Stonehenge campsite for an evening meal. We had faggots and the pork loin chop in cider and both were hot and very tasty. They came with vegetables including red cabbage, and were perfect for a cold November evening meal. Puddings were cheesecake (great) and sticky date and finger pudding and custard (delicious). Had a meal there recently, plates were cold so the food also got cold very quickly which made it very unpleasant. Food was ordinary but not overly expensive. There was no one in the pub yet you still had to ‘order drinks at the bar’. Which was 3 steps away and went on your bill anyway so it felt a little Fawlty Towers to be honest. Wouldn’t go back.

We have been having a reunion lunch here for several years and therefore it is with regret that our lunch this year was disappointing. The food was good but spoilt by icy cold plates and we were told they did not have the means to heat them (hot water?!). Sticky Toffee pudding and ice-cream were the only alternatives for desert and there were not enough Sticky Toffee puddings left so three ice creams were ordered but only two arrived. The coffee machine was not working so we were unable to have coffee. It was disappointing and we are unlikely to return.

Have been using The Boot at lesdt twice a year with one other pub as lunch stop over on trip from Kent to Devon. Different menu, more basic but large servings. We ordered chiabatta sandwiches and I was beaten half way through served with salad, coleslaw and chips. Nothing wrong with cooking, just to big for me. Would have liked more choice of sandwiches and praps a ploughmans and a soup choice. Biggest problem was the number of flies in the back area which we were told was due to the harvest, no other tables were available. Not nice, would it be possible to put in some fly zappers? Staff were cheery and welcoming.

As a family of 5, camping 10 minutes up the road st the Stonehenge campsite, we arrived in the village at 1400 looking for somewhere to eat. The Boot Inn shone in the distance like a shining beacon, inviting us in to eat and drink. Everything looked good, the beautiful old building with signs outside stating that food was served until 1430; ‘Brilliant we thought, we have half an hour to order food”. We happily entered the pub admiring the lovely furniture and homely setting and arrived at the bar; from this point on it seemed like we had entered a comedy sketch where the objective of the pub staff was to be as impolite and obstructive as possible. The young barman asked if we were here for food and drinks or just drinks. ‘Food and drinks please.’’ Surprisingly, the barman took in a big breath and said; “I’m going to have to check with the chef, its gone past 2pm”. I resisted pointing out that the sign outside food was served until 1430, but luckily the barman begrudgingly said that we could order food. “That’s great”, said the hungry campers as they studied the rather short and bland menus. After only 1 minute of assessing the 8 choices on the menu we had made up our minds. Choices of various ciabatta sandwiches were chosen plus one gammon egg and chips but the happy barman then informed us that there was no ciabatta but we could still have the order but without the bread. We agreed that we would still want this as we were hungry (and there was no other life or facilities within the village). Mr Happy then said that they were also out of gammon. So our family member who had asked for gammon then asked if she could just have a bowl of chips. “No!!’ Was the curt response from the morose barman. “Iis there any chance of a price reduction seeing as the sandwiches we ordered don’t come with bread?” “I’ll have to check with the chef, but I’m not sure” was the response. After ordering our sandwiches (without bread) and drinks, we evacuated the atmosphere-void premises into the garden. Luckily for us, one of the pub staff who had actually had some sort of customer service training, came to our table, and our family member who had asked earlier if she could have had a bowl of chips, chanced her luck and asked again. “That shouldn’t be a problem” she said. We all looked at each other surprised by the answer and happy that at least one person in the pub felt some sort of responsibility for customer service and was trying to make the pub a welcoming place. 15 minutes later, our bread-less sandwiches and hard fought for bowl of chips arrived, delivered happily by the helpful lady. However, as our sandwiches had no bread, we would need to eat the meat, salad and accompanying fries with cutlery. When the lady returned we asked for cutlery which she promptly brought over. The food was at best average and presentation below average; if this was an olympic sport, this pub would not have even got through the national stages, let alone qualified for the Olympics. To say we were dissatisfied is an understatement. I have been to many pubs in my lifetime all over Britain; I’ve been to amazing pubs, poor pubs and pubs that go out of their way to create a welcoming experience. I’ve been to pubs where violence has ensued and been to pubs where police have been called to prevent certain death. But I have never been to a pub where I have instantly taken a complete dislike and never wanted to return again until I arrived at the Boot Inn. Rude, unwelcoming and amazingly still in business with such a crass business acumen.

First time visit to the pub as moved to Shrewton village nearby during lockdown and not had the opportunity to dine out since. Took family and in-laws that we haven't seen for over a year out for dinner having seen all the good reviews and pictures of extensive menus on the internet. When we arrived we asked for menus, expecting to be able to have a starter, main and dessert if required. We were eventually told you have a choice of Roast Beef, pork or lamb; that's it! One meal needed to be gluten free, which was accommodated, but the plate consisted of two small dry/chewy potatoes, and two very thin slices of lamb the size of your palm. Could have been much better. Meanwhile others at our table who ordered the beef had 4 thick slices of beef, roast potatoes, Yorkshire puddings, stuffing and looked 3 times the size. No continuity in the dishes served to our table at all. When we asked for dessert, one waitress told us there was one choice; sticky toffee pudding as Chef has had a busy week and hasn't done anything else! Then another waiter told us there was also ice-cream. Neither of which our Gluten and Lactose intolerant guest could eat despite the website saying they can accommodate. Needless to say, we were all unimpressed and wont bother again which is shame. Every day of the week, and every customer should be treated as important as the next.

When we asked about food, he said he was looking for a decent chef. Well certainly go vack6becayse it us effective,y a good village pub and very welcoming.

Visited on a whim whilst strolling around the village. I understand covid restrictions are in place currently, but the fact remains still felt rushed. Entered pub and we hadn't booked but asked it they had a table free, told we only have a hour. That's fine. So we ordered. Had X2 roasts as it was Sunday. Pork was very fatty and vegetables were hard like they had been microwaved quickly. Roast Beef seemed alright. Whole time we were there we knew we only had an hour. But the whole time we were staff constantly starring at us like we weren't meant to be there and very loudly commenting at bar about time restrictions whilst looking at our table. We ate quickly and paid and left within 40 minutes. Never going back. Was very disappointed as seemed like a nice pub on first glance. They didn't seem to be rushing what seemed to be any of the locals in the corner who were drinking and talking.

We went for Sunday lunch having booked a table and explained that I was vegan. I had the nut roast which was served with Yorkshire Pudding which I was suspicious of. When I asked, they apologised and said that it was made with egg. Bowls of veg arrived including cauliflower cheese which they didn’t mention. So there wasn’t much choice for me, to be honest and I was not at all convinced that they knew what a vegan was.I noticed people drinking at the bar ( on stools) when legally they should have been at a table only. In addition, the very young staff didn’t seem to know that all customers have to wear a mask in the restaurant unless they are sitting at their table. The management seems terrible. A disappointing lunch, all in all.

We came here after a wet day in salisbury as we were camping just up the road on arrival we were asked to check in under covid regulations. We were attentively served our drinks and given our menu's My husband had the crab starter and it was amazing. I then had the hake with mint and pea linguini and it was amazing. The food here is what you would expect to pay for in a high end restraunt. Would we visit again. Definitely yes

This is a lovely looking place and we've stopped here many times in the past, it's now under new ownership and sadly it's different. Previously the food was very good for a pub and it was the best place we've found to eat off the A303. Now it's average, not saying the food is awful but if you have stopped here in the past you'd probably be disappointed. Satiniser and covid check in was available, one of the two servers was wearing a mack.

We visited for lunch as a family of 6, booked outside as Covid concerned but as it had no sides and rather blowy decided to sit inside.Service very slow and we couldn’t see how we were going to finish by 3pm the closing time. The lasagna was too salty to eat which we told the lady waitress who said absolutely nothing just cleared the table. Then when our male waiter was talking our desert order of an ice cream and coffee she appeared and said ‘We are closed now’He politely carried on then we felt rushed to go.The lasagna was still on the bill as it was a first get together for the family for nearly a year we didn’t say anything to ruin the day further.

I live locally and, since I didn’t have time to cook, decided to pop over to the Boot to eat. I was tempted by several dishes on the menu but eventually settled on loin fillet medallions with a mushroom sauce. It was absolutely, melt-in-the-mouth delicious. I will definitely be back soon to eat here again.

We all had Sunday roasts. All of the meat was so overcooked and tough. Veg was just boiled and bland, no seasoning or butter. The beer selection is also grim (Kronenberg & Fosters) and the pipes didn’t taste clean. Bad pints. The staff were wearing tracksuit bottoms and all looked very bored. The toilets are outside, as is the baby changing station, so babies can freeze while getting their nappy changed. Also, no anti COVID measures in place at all, no masks, sanitizer or track & trace in place. I actually can’t understand who this dump has a high rating.

We live relatively close to The Boot Inn and have visited many times over the years and have always enjoyed this small friendly village pub. We were keen to try it out again as a new landlord had recently settled in and we had heard that he likes his wines and food. We went last week with some friends and were delighted to find that that the food was excellent. I particularly enjoyed the mussels, which I will certainly order again one day. The wine was superb and the service was friendly and efficient. The atmosphere was warm and relaxed. We enjoyed our meal so much that we decided to take my mother in law there for Sunday lunch a week later. It was a busy day but there were plenty of staff on duty and the food arrived promptly. The lunch was exactly what you would want from a traditional Sunday pub lunch. The portions were nice and generous and the roast was lovely and tender. The lemon meringue pie was ordered again as we enjoyed it from the week before. I have no hesitation in recommending this pub and wish Mike the new landlord all the very best for the future.

I would definitely recommend this excellent friendly village pub to anybody visiting the Stonehenge area. We were really impressed with the standard of food and made several visits while on holiday last week. The tiger prawns, hake and vegetarian Sunday roast were all delicious. Great beer and a welcoming atmosphere. It’s a beautiful pub we really enjoyed our time there.

This is the second time we have stayed in Berwick St. James and both times we had dinner at The Boot. The first time, the food was excellent. We were a little unsure about what we would find this year as we knew the Pub was in different hands. The food was truly excellent, 3 of us ate there and all had different dishes, all three were superb. Not a crumb left on the plates. The food is imaginative, good quality ingredients sourced locally. The owner is a Chef, and a damn good one at that. I would recommend booking a table as the Pub is small inside. We had a light lunch too while we were there and this was exceptionally also. My partner and I are serious foodies, the Boot and the new owner did us proud. It’s a long way from Sheffield to Berwick St. James, but it’s worth the drive. We stayed at The Mill House on the High Street and there was nothing better than not having to drive to The Boot, the walk was so nice through this sleepy place. We will be back again next year and will be booking into The Boot for sure.

Disappointingly pub: new ownership/management but not for the better, - service limp & slow too.Food not even average, tasteless obviously the chef hasn't learnt about seasoning let alone dressing a salad, food arrived only warm & bland. Dessert was definitely not made in the kitchen, rather just assembled from shop bought items. As a new start, the Help Out To Eat Out would have been a nice gesture towards customers & to build business, but told the bureaucracy was too much so basically couldn't be bothered, just more arrogance from the unsavoury publican. Not surprisingly the restaurant was more or less empty, the standard & service we have been accustomed to at The Boot with Giles & Cathy, is now sadly lacking....Furthermore couldn't see any evidence or awareness of Covid 19 precautions. Unless there is some dramatic improvement, not one to recommend - rather, it is now one to avoid....

I ate here for lunch two days in a row because it was so good! The menu is composed of around 10 classic style pub meals including the exceptional smoked haddock risotto, which is one of the best rice-based dishes I've ever eaten. There are a good selection of cheap drinks and a spacious beer garden with a marquee. The landlord is very friendly and chatty and everything was very pleasant. I'll definitely be back!

My friend and I went on a little adventure and were lucky enough to stumble upon the Boot Inn. We are both vegetarians and find that the rural pubs don't seem to cater too well for veggies but we were delighted to see that this place did. The food was all delicious and home made, reading a comment on here about being pre prepared.... Clearly don't know anything! The land lord and staff were all sooo lovely and accommodating. We ate in the garden surrounded by beautiful flowers and a warm atmosphere.Thank you to the owners, we will be back :)

Under new ownership and with a new landlord, it’s all change at this popular stop just off the A303. The good news is that the pub is now a free house - Doombar on tap - with wider welcome variety. The wine choice is better quality too. The new landlord is enthusiastic and welcoming, particularly after a long period of Covid closure - has redecorated and set up a marquee in the garden to align with C19 safety policy. So far so encouraging. Sadly what has really changed is the food. No longer “freshly” prepared- now microwave and fryer finished - the previous good, imaginative pub grub has left town. You could not ask which butcher the meat comes from because it all looks a long, long way from the farm. Too many things on the menu and too much of it looks to have come from preprepared catering packs, including microwaved veg and potatoes, over-cooked meat and watery gravy. On balance, if you want a drink, it’s worth stopping for; if you want good quality food, keep going on the A303. Hopefully the new landlord will sort all this out - and it’s early days - but the Boot deserves better.

This has been a consistently excellent pub and I was saddened to hear that the Landlady and her Chef husband are moving on after 12 years of amazing service to the local community. I fear that this will be another excellent pub lost after Wadworth sold the pub to another company who have imposed a significant increase in the rent, making the business untenable.

We chose The Boot Inn because it was the perfect half way mark to meet with friends for lunch and the reviews were good. We could not have been happier! As soon as we arrived we were made to feel very welcome. The food was absolutely amazing. Wonderful flavours, lots of local produce and beautifully presented. The only very sad thing we discovered is the current owners, Cathy & Giles, are leaving in April. We shall definitely make sure we visit again.

My grandchildren reached the ages of 11 and 10 last week. One lives in Bristol the other down the road in Milford on Sea. A good halfway house? Well, the Boot turned out to be very good indeed. A proper village pub, well off the A36. I had booked a table for the seven of us for Sunday. Delightful ladies greeted us and we were safely seated in a comfy room a few steps from the bar area. I happily settled in with a very nice pint of lunchtime bitter. The day's menu was excellent. Four starters, four mains and four puds. On the back a ploughmans, three specials and a childrens menu which neither of my grandchildren went for. The starters were very good indeed. Not at all what one would expect. We did not have the soup but thoroughly enjoyed the salad of sprout tops, salsify and crispy ham hock. The soused mackerel and watercress. The lovely cheddar and cherry tomato tartlet and, from the specials menu, the parsnip fritters and bluecheese walnut dip.The specials had a turkey escallop wrapped in ham and sage but I had had my fill of turkey over Christmas and settled for the very nice rosemary and garlic slow cooked leg of lamb. Delilah loved her perfectly cooked rump of local treacle cured beef. these were both served with a mass of roast potatoes, carrots and broccoli. Far too much for this old man! The others thoroughly en joyed a very good fish pie and peas. A single scoop of their home made ice creams was spot on. When I had booked i asked if they were able to do a birthday cake. No but please bring your own. The lovely girls took them from us when we arrived and brought them out with the lit candles after the ices. The children loved their birthday Sunday lunch, as did their parents and grandparents. A warm welcome from both staff and locals. A proper village pub!

We were staying at the nearby Stonehenge campsite for the winter solstice and walked into Berwick St. James (took us about 30 minutes with a small child who kept wanting to look at fungi on the way...) and found The Boot Inn. It wasn't quite open and we were about to leave when the landlord spotted us and opened up.If escaping from a damp December into a comfortable haven of a roaring log fire, real ales on pump and a very friendly Wiltshire welcome is your thing then definitely pay a visit. Family run and family friendly, my daughter happily played with the landlord and landlady's children as we cosied ourselves for an hour or so before getting the bus into Salisbury.Word of warning - it got busy very quickly. There were a few tables reserved for diners so, if that's your plan, I'd book ahead, as by 12.30 the place was full (Saturday lunchtime). We didn't try the food but I can't fault the warm service and the general ambience of the place. So nice to see a family run pub doing so well.

Very occasionally I come across a place that is just so perfect and fabulous that I consider not telling anyone else about it. The Boot Inn is one of those places. Welcoming people of all ages and dogs of all sizes this small pub offers roaring fires, friendly efficient service and a really interesting but unpretentious menu, much of which is locally sourced and some of which is smoked by the landlord/chef himself. We went for lunch and shared a smoked mixed meat, game, fish and cheese platter (£17) between three, which was quite enough with a pint(!) of chips and we stayed far longer than intended because we felt so cosy and welcome. We even had complementary dogs treats with the bill. I would go back in a heartbeat. Booking recommended.

Met my brother for a catch up before Christmas having found this place on the internet and booked the last available table for 2. There was a warm welcome on arrival and a tasty Christmas beer. Food was all homemade, hot (apart of course from my jaffa cake and strawberry ice cream) and delicious. Courses were served in a very timely fashion and the attentive approach of the landlord and staff was just right. We were made to feel very much at home. I don't generally write reviews, but this was an excellent pre-Christmas treat. Can't recommend it strongly enough.

After a long day we walked along the river path from our B&B; for a relaxing meal here. There is a full bar, beers and wines. We started with a shared smoked plate with 3 cheeses, 3 chutneys, crackers, watercress and 6 different smoked meats! That could have been dinner. But then we shared the steak and duck leg both with veggies and potatoes. Now really full we couldn't pass up the toffee pudding with HOMEMADE Belgium spice ice cream.... to die for all that with a bottle of good Rioja. We left completely satisfied and waddled back to our room. The food was all delicious and prepared lovingly do not miss this place !!

We found this place from a recommendation in a book featuring great restaurants and cafes just off the main UK trunk roads - The Extra Mile. The alternative nature of the outlets featured was amply demonstrated by The Boot. There was a wide choice of food on the menu from main courses to lunchtime snacks. we sampled a cheese ploughman's, a smoked mackerel ploughman's and Wiltshire ham, duck Egg and skin on fries (definitely a cut above your usual ham, egg and chips!) Really good chutneys, pickles, chopped walnuts and salad accompaniments and freshly baked (still warm) bread. Cosy pub with friendly staff and served pretty quickly. Local sourcing is clearly important to the proprietors. Good range of beer as well. A range of a la carte dishes would well warrant a return visit. Perfect stop-off for a journey from Devon to home in Essex. Would highly recommend.
