Dear The Boot (Histon) I hope this message finds you well. I am writing to share some feedback from a recent dining experience at The Boot in Histon, which we visited last night for dinner with a friend. Upon arrival, we experienced a delay in being acknowledged while the staff engaged in conversation at the computer. This wasn't the warmest welcome, and after bringing our presence to their attention, we were seated in a quiet restaurant. While our waitress was polite, the service throughout the evening was noticeably slow. Regarding our meal, I ordered the St Austell’s Beef and Ale pie with a side of savoy cabbage with bacon. Unfortunately, the pie contained only a few small pieces of meat held together by a greyish sauce, and both the mash and gravy were lukewarm. The cabbage side was also tepid, and the bacon resembled undercooked lardons rather than the appetizing dish I anticipated. My partner opted for the chalkstream trout, which was overcooked beyond her preference, although she did enjoy it. Our friend had the house burger, which was satisfactory, though the menu-stated cheese wasn’t available. For dessert, my partner ordered a chocolate tart, which she found delightful, yet the experience was marred by having to repeatedly seek out service for our orders and drinks throughout the evening. Additionally, we noticed cleanliness was an issue; our table was not only grubby but the varnish was worn, exposing the wood beneath which can harbours germs. Furthermore, I had to return a set of cutlery due to unappealing black squishy residue. Even fellow diners expressed dissatisfaction with their meals, indicating a broader concern with the standards of food and service currently offered. It is disheartening to witness the decline in quality and service at The Boot, particularly given its association with esteemed establishments Blanc Brasserie. Unless significant improvements are made, I am hesitant to return. Thank you for taking the time to consider this feedback. I hope it will be used constructively to enhance the dining experience for future patrons.

The food was very good, in particular the fish and chips not only it was huge but also very tasty. The tartare sauce was really good with depth of flavour. The rest of our order was also good. Nice stake and burger. The service was very friendly and professional and the atmosphere was very enticing. If I had one criticism, that would be the music. I was waiting for James Brown to pop out from a corner! Maybe a more lounge/chilled music would suit better. Overall a great experience! It was our go to place for years. The food keeps declining over the past couple of years now, food portions halved, prices doubled, Menu looks more like an upscale version of Weatherspoons! Not a gastro pub any more, not the food we used to eat the first 2-3 years, it has become unaffordable for most - £23 for chicken with cheep mash and a carrot sliced in half! Really a shame as it is a gem and it declines consistently, especially since it was sold to another company.

First time here, booked a table for dinner. The food was good, I had the Pork Ribeye, which was very well cooked, although the sauce lacked any body and was very oily. We had two waitresses, one clearly didn’t want to be at work that day, the other was great, friendly and especially good with our kids.

Came for Easter Sunday lunch with the family. Pre-ordered the food and paid a deposit before we arrived. We were seen to our table late, it was squeezed in to fit despite booking weeks ahead, they seemed to be being greedy and overbooking beyond the restaurant space and kitchen could manage. Sat for 30 mins before starters came out, no apologies or acknowledgment of the slow service from the wait staff, food was ok but not spectacular, coffees/teas for those who ordered them came and were finished before the desserts arrived and the sauce on the sticky toffee pudding was bitter and burnt and inedible. I think it’s really gone down hill recently (maybe since it changed ownership) but our last 2 experiences now have been the same which is a real shame.

The food was good but the service was very poor. We waited a very long time for our lunch. Even when we were the last people there, the waitress walked straight past without even looking to see if we needed anything. We had to search for someone to pay. We didnt even try to order coffee because it was getting so late. There was no toilet paper in the ladies and the seat was broken. This restaurant used to be excellent but something seems to have gone wrong.

When I arrived the bar was full of young builder types who were hell bent on drinking as much as they could in their lunch break, not the relaxing environment I was expecting. The barman was of little use. Once in the restaurant, the staff were attentive, although it seemed that all members of staff were taking care of us (the amount of check backs from various members of staff was a bit intrusive). Main course was OK, a bit luke warm, but tasted alright. Dessert was a disaster, over microwaved, Raymond Blanc would have been less than pleased. Once brought to the attention of staff this was dealt with and I was offered another, which I decided not to have. The item was removed from the bill. Would I return? I doubt it. Shame.

Visited for Mothers Day, booked for mid-afternoon. No room in the car park so had to park elsewhere (on the street). Very obvious that the team were stressed as soon as we arrived - lots of confusion and frustration between staff, including some quite harsh chastising of waitresses by more senior staff. Front of house lead especially seemed very stressed and disorganised - we asked for water when we sat down and were brought water but no glasses, and it took another ten minutes for our drink orders to be taken. Once she first came over though, our waitress (Gemma/Jenna?) was very friendly and chatty, and was very relaxed in the face of what I’m sure was a very full on day. Food was nice enough, but got the impression that it had been sat under a heat light for some time. Two of our party had a roast - pastry had gone soggy, roast veg was verging on room temperature, yorkshires had gone dry, cauliflower cheese sauce had gone a bit grainy. Quite disappointing, especially considering the price. Several things in toilet (toilet roll holder, bin) were broken. Pub in general was very noisy, though I appreciate there were a lot more young children in than a typical Sunday given the occasion! Staff were stood in the hallway to bathrooms on their phones. Overall quite disappointing, but the service of our waitress was great.

Eight of us had a fortieth birthday meal at The Boot last night. The food was great. My stone bass was one of the best fish dishes I can remember - moist flesh and lovely crispy skin. We were given free prosecco to start (some sort of promotion), but what made the meal special was the kind attention paid to us by our waitress, the exquisite Lauren. Exquisite in behavioural terms, obvs...but... She picked up that it was Birthday Boy's Big Day, and unbidden brought a special ice cream dessert complete with candle. Value for money excellent. Absolutely tiny portion sizes which was such a disappointment, given the food that we did get was tasty. Had to ask the waiter what was the biggest dessert as we our main course was ridiculously small and came with no veg or potatoes (it was almost £20 for the main, therefore this was extremely disappointing!) Dessert wasn’t much better either, with the thimble size jug of custard with the crumble, which would not look out of place in the Borrowers house !!! All in all a really disappointing experience, which we will not be repeating.

The food was great - but the staff were rude and the service sloppy! What was supposed to be a special occasion (my mother’s birthday) was cut short when one of the waitresses rather rudely demanded that we vacate our table due to another booking. Whilst they do say in the booking conditions that your table is available for 2 hours, we were still within the 2-hour window when this happened. Furthermore, the restaurant had quite a few free tables, so any waiting customers could have been seated elsewhere instead of insisting that we move! And the best they could do was to offer us a “discount” Thank you for ruining my mother’s special day - next time, we will go somewhere where they know how to treat customers properly!! Have been a few times in the past, but not anymore! People don’t go to a restaurant to eat, but to socialise and the least the staff can do is to respect that!

The food was nice, and a pleasant atmosphere. However, the staff were incredibly rude and unprofessional as they abruptly asked us to vacate our table due to another booking. Now, we understand that restaurants can get busy (and they do mention the 2-hour per table in their booking conditions) - but there was no need to be quite so rude about it, especially since we were still within the 2-hour window and there were other free tables (so the group supposedly waiting could easily been seated elsewhere). We had gone for my mother’s birthday, with my parents flying in from abroad especially, so it would have been nice if the staff had shown a little more consideration and professionalism. They did give us a discount by way of an apology, but they are honestly going to lose people’s business if they keep behaving like this. Remember, customer service goes a long way! This was a disappointing end to what was meant to be a family celebration (in future we’ll pick somewhere else that knows how to treat customers properly!)

Friendly welcome on arrival, clean and tidy bistro restaurant. Accessible menu with a wide variety of dietary requirements catered for, and excellent attention to detail regarding allergies. Very professional team, great service. Cheese soufflé starter is a favourite, but lots of fish, vegan and veggie options. I went for the game terrine, which was well seasoned, the spiced rhubarb compote was an excellent accompaniment along with the toasted sourdough. Main courses all looked very good, but we all went for herb custed stuffed lamb roulade as the sides sounded particularly well matched. It's bistro style, so expect decent portions and simple veg garnish, lots of dauphinoise potato on the menu as well, no bad thing. Pistachio soufflé for pudding, very well executed, and great deals in January if you sign up to marketing. One or two alcohoc dronks at lunchtime meant it wasn't super-cheap, but this is only to be expected. This place has consistently good food and service, and held this all year round for several years. Very much strongly recommended.

As soon as we arrived we were told that once we sit down we are on our two hour time limit…fine, if a little rude (though in that two hours we only had time for one course as it was horrendously slow so I think it’s cheeky to put that time limit on customers seeing as it’s not our fault!!). This was just the start. We had to ask to order drinks, ask to order food, it then took an hour to get any food and our plates were not removed for about 20 minutes afterwards. We were not offered more drinks or a dessert menu when our plates were finally cleared. We were so annoyed that we decided to just get the bill (again, had to flag someone over to ask). We got the bill and surprise surprise we had to ask to then pay. The experience was exhausting and the worst we’ve had in a long time.

We thought it was odd as the Turkey didn’t come with any. We ordered 2 bowls for the table. When they arrived, there were 3 mini pigs in blankets in a ramekin (definitely not a bowl full). I checked and they said it was correct and smirked at us. The manager was made aware I had queried it but didn’t once come over to us to ask if everything was ok. The sprouts were very hard and it was a shame for a nice restaurant to not have roast potatoes with the Turkey. I have had three dinners in recent months with work colleagues and friends at The Boot. The restaurant itself is homely and well decorated which makes it a lovely venue for dinner. However we have increasingly found that the menu is very over-priced for what are often very small portions of fairly average food. Our most recent visit was for our company Christmas meal which was both expensive and underwhelming. Considering the high cost, the mediocre turkey main was low in both quality and quantity. Service was also chaotic and at times rude, especially from a quite angry restaurant manager. This was compounded by the non arrival of mince pies and coffee at the end of the meal and a final bill which over charged us. Overall a very disappointing experience. We wont be returning which is a shame as the The Boot could be so much better in the right hands.

We had booked a works meal and emailed ahead of time to request 2 out of 6 required items from the main menu and not the Christmas menu. On arrival we were told this wasn't possible and yes they had received email but chose not to respond. After emphasising that the vegetarian option really was not suitable it was agreed to allow a main menu option. We did find the service very poor and the waitress came across very abrupt on any requests. We then received our mince pies, may I suggest it is added to the menu that these are mini...very mini! We then received the bill and on checking we had been charged for the said mince pies which were included in the menu. We did highlight this error and the charge was removed. Overall my experience was very disappointing which is a shame as my expectations were high.

Fabulous lunch, absolutely delicious food. We will definitely go again. This was a virgin experience voucher meal, so we are glad we found this restaurant for the future.

We visited in a Saturday - 4.30pm sitting as a family of 6. We’ve been coming to the boot for many years and it’s always been perfect. I am assuming it’s because of the change of management but tonight was so disappointing. Food good but...

The food was incredible. Very high quality. The staff were lovely and very helpful. It's quite expensive, but we'll worth the money. I will certainly be visiting again.

I was left disappointed with the Beef sunday roast. For £20 I expect something superior and whilst the bottomless element sounds good it essentially means you are given a small portion to begin with and need to ask for more when ready. The beef was delicious though, the place itself is nicely decorated and the staff are friendly enough.

The food was very good but I felt on the pricey side for a pub, albeit a nice pub. I'd probably only consider dining again if there was a deal on offer. I had 3 courses and a drink for just under £60....it was the...

Excellent restaurant. (I think it calls itself a brasserie). Remarkably good food -- probably the best steak and ale pie I have eaten for a long time. Sensible young staff who know their job. Pleasant ambience. We loved it.

Fabulous food & excellent service. We were greeted warmly by friendly & attentive staff. We had perfectly cooked tender steak, delicious stone bass & melt in the mouth ribeye pork followed by delicious desserts & a large cheeseboard. It was a little pricey (£188 for...

Oh dear, what a shame nothing like the quality and service provided by the previous owner. Hartwood Inns seem to have lowered the offering, jacked up the prices and reduced the service level. Meals now no longer include veg which has to be ordered as a 'side' meaning a meagre Pie, chips & green beans costs an eyewatering £21.99 and is served on a flaking piece of wood to Boot! Pun intended. Drinks specifically ask to be without ice were delivered with ice and the juvenile waiting staff seemed phased at even basic requests, such as can I have a plate for my pie. The menu is now fancily described pub grub, no longer tasty cuisine, not one of our 6 person party had anything good to say about our wholly unsatisfactory lunch experience. We left after the main foregoing what would probably have been a rip off dessert where a plate was an extra. Such a shame that Hartwood Inns don't realise they can only trade on a previous owners good reputation for a short time. None of our party will be returning anytime soon ....

Party of 6 for lunch, in what used to be one of our favourite restaurants. Service could only be considered as bizarre, three members of staff came (all at the same time!) to take drinks orders and were specifically asked not to put ice in...

Another excellent meal in the company of our 2 cousins who were impressed by the food and service. The fillet steak was perfectly cooked and very tender. The other main courses of Applewood smoked pork ribeye and Herb-crusted lamb roulade were also very good. As...

One of the best fine dines in ever visited. Staff are nice and service time is quick. We trued the vegetarian options and they were mind bogglingly delicious . Do try their dips with sourdough. Ambience is warm and beautifully done.

Excellent meal. Restaurant busy, so slow service but staff attentive, friendly with vibrant atmosphere. This is the best pub/restaurant in Histon and a real gem where a good meal is guaranteed. My partner and I really enjoyed his Birthday treat dinner.

The food was delicious but they seem to have split dishes so that instead of having a plateful of food, you have to order anything beyond the main ingredients as sides, making it quite a pricey lunch. I took the roasted aubergine (£15 ish) which was beautifully tasty ... but it was literally half an aubergine, about ten small (1.5cm) cubes of pumpkin and some daubs of various sauces. Unfortunately we didn't have time to order more sides so I left hungry. Last time I'd visited I couldn't finish everything. I wouldn't rush back.
