The food is excellent and the service great. Given the quality of the food and atmosphere, it's also excellent value. There are mediocre high street chains that charge more than this.

The food was lovely and the staff were polite and friendly. The bottomless roast potatoes were a bit of a pointless gimmick, as we waited 20 minutes for 5 potatoes at a table of 5 adults and had all finished our meals by then.

We had our first ever large group meal at the end of December - we have often been as a couple to the Boot and always found it to be excellent. We were really pleased the same high standards were maintained for a group booking of 15. Everyone was really impressed by the organisation beforehand, the warm welcome, the great service, the wide range of dishes and the delicious food. It was a very special birthday lunch, many thanks to all at the Boot. Looking back at a previous glowing review I posted 4 years ago, it's great that the Boot has stayed as good as ever! (And that they still do a mean souffle!)

Sterling inside, you could tell that this place exudes a lot of character and a welcoming atmosphere. The bar staff were friendly and they appeared to be friendly towards each other, like it was a happy and cohesive team. There are two entrances: if you're after a quiet drink rather than the more noisy gastropub atmosphere, enter through the unassuming small doored high street entrance. You have easier access to the bar, plus you're next to the snug lounge that's isolated from the braying diners.

I’ve eaten at The Boot quite a few times now and would rate it as decent overall. The food is tasty (and has good seasonal specials), the pub has a nice atmosphere, and they’re good with allergies, which is always a plus. However, there are a few issues worth mentioning. Firstly, the service can be incredibly slow—last week, we waited 30 minutes just to place our first order. Secondly, we’ve had staff put through incorrect orders on multiple occasions, especially when waiters don’t write things down. I’m not sure why this is even a thing—I certainly wouldn’t mind if they took notes to get it right! Finally, while I realise this is becoming more common in the UK, adding a 12% discretionary service charge feels unnecessary, particularly given the service issues mentioned. It also puts customers in the awkward position of having to request its removal if they’re not happy—definitely not ideal. That said, it’s still a decent spot for a meal, but a bit more attention to service would make it much better.

The Boot, an award-winning gastro pub in the heart of the pretty village of Histon, Cambridgeshire, is renowned for serving fresh, seasonal food alongside perfectly poured pints, an expertly curated wine list and a delicious selection of cocktails. The menu champions local, seasonal produce, and we had an excellent evening meal recently, starting with some delicious cocktails and salty Boquerones with bread while we perused the menu. The Cheese Soufflé with Coastal Cheddar sauce was a light, flavourful appetiser, and the French Onion Soup with Gruyère & croutons was a warming bowlful of comfort food at its finest. The Grilled Hot Smoked ChalkStream Trout with beetroot, cauliflower & crème fraîche was prettily presented, and the rich, earthy Celeriac Fondant was served with celeriac remoulade & walnuts. Our main courses included a golden Artichoke & Chestnut Mushroom Pithivier with pickled girolles, braised baby onions, snd grilled leeks in a glossy red wine & port sauce. The fish dishes were outstanding; ChalkStream Trout Fillet in prawn butter & white wine sauce, with prawn potatoes & wilted kale, and Hake Grenobloise with mash, brown butter & capers. And the Free-Range Beef Burger in a sesame brioche bun, with garlic mayonnaise & chips came with a variety of topping choices. The Boot offers a warm welcome, excellent food choices, and throughout January until 8th February, there’s a 50% discount off main courses!

I visited The Boot at Histon with my sister and brother-in-law for a pre-christmas celebration of just being together. We were fortunate enough to be seated in the "Snug" which is a delightful room with the ambience of a gentleman's club with a log burning fire adding additional warmth to the welcome. On entering the premises we were greeted by Alice and James, Alice, I believe is the Maitre D' controlling the team with the panache of a symphony orchestra conductor. James, standing tall, and attentive with a winning smile and easy manner directed us through and introduced us to our waiter for the evening David. Shown to our table and presented with the menu and a couple of suggestions David settled us in our seats and gave us time to study the excellent range of dishes available. David's reccomemdation of the sourdough and dips was inspired and served to us by the happy, smiling Desire who added a near near cabaret class singing accompliment. David's knowledge of the menu and his descriptions led me to select the most succulent pork ribeye ever and I must compliment the chef on the presentation. Dessert was delicious and the stylishly presented meringue and ice cream celebration of Autumnal tastes and flavours rounded off the meal superbly well. We will be back.

Great place with mix of different eating areas and bar etc. My only negative commitment is management really need to get the front of the building painted. The distressed outside is off putting and lets the whole experience down. Wherever I take clients there I avoid going around the front of the building. The other eatery just a few places up the road looks far more attractive and cared for in terms of curb appeal. Come on people, Get the paint brushes out!

I'm generally sceptical of pubs that bill themselves as a "gastro-pub" because either it means everything costs a fiver more than it should or the "gastro" label is applied because they serve Stokes ketchup instead of random-brand.... but in the case of The Boot, the label is apt. The prices are similar to what you would pay in other pubs but the food is more akin to a fine restaurant's fare. I had a delicious steak&ale pie, nice pastry, chock full of meat, with creamy mashed potato and perfectly-cooked green beans. My family members were equally happy with their choices -- all looked and tasted excellent. Moderate portions of excellent quality all round. Interesting menu -- more creativity than you would expect in a pub. I'll be back to try the venison and pheasant sausages -- unfortunately not available on the day. And next time we'll stay for pudding!

Starting with the things that I liked. Firstly the building itself which was gorgeous. Secondly the staff who were friendly and helpful. Thirdly the quality of the meat (we had the Sunday toast) was superb and it was expertly cooked. However what let the place down was my starter (cheese soufflé) which was overcooked and tasteless, the roast potatoes which were soggy and were not crispy in the slightest and the thin, insipid gravy. The roast veg were a little oily for my personal taste and the cabbage had too much pepper added. The Yorkshire pudding and cauliflower cheese were perfectly adequate. The place was extremely busy, so I would like to return perhaps on a day which is not so frantic.

I recommended The Boot to my friend for her mother’s 90th birthday. Yesterday the food was reasonably good and the waiter exceptional. However, we had to wait a really long time for our Bloody Mary,s and the starters had already arrived. Eventually, I went to the bar and ordered a bottle of white wine as Jenny whose birthday it was had not had a drink for atleast 40 min. Today, we went for a roast which was delicious but warm. I asked to talk to the Manager about the drinks situation the day before and she explained a refund had been offered. The same situation regarding the bloody Mary’s had happened once before and no sherry was available today. In mid conversation, she cut me short and said she had to rush off. I said I had not finished and reluctantly she half listened. I was annoyed that we had been kept waiting for our drinks the day before and if a cocktail was not available, to say so. Her attitude was patronising & unsympathetic not caring we had been let down. I will not be making any future recommendations as I feel disappointed by how we/I was treated. You have a lack of staff, lack of drinks and rude managers. The previous American manager was superb. I suggest you listen to your customers as you are not doing yourself any favours!!!

Always enjoyed going to the boot for their roast dinner but was very disappointed today. When we first arrived we were sat in the conservatory which was very warm due to the sun beaming in. We were then served by a friendly waiter who took our drinks order. After about 15 minutes of waiting another waiter walking past said ' do you know what you want?' Which was quite shocking due to the 'fine dining' description the boot perceives and from the previous experience I have had by welcoming and friendly service. We then ordered our food and our food soon arrived after. Our food was presented nicely however the waiter that had taken our order had forgotten to put down comments to which we asked for so our food then had to be returned, due to not wanting the beef red. We also asked for extra gravy which we then had to wait 5 minutes for and the Jug which we recieved was very small and only was enough for 2 people, we were a group of 4. We then asked for another gravy Jug which we waited a long period of time for and one of the chefs ended up bringing it too our table. This meant by the time we could eat our food it was basically cold and only being heated by the gravy. The food was okay, but wasn't very flavourful or seasoned and for the money the overall experience I won't be returning any time soon. We then ordered puddings and fortunately they were delicious and thoroughly enjoyed across the table. A couple of us ordered coffees to which we then had to try and catch a servers attention as they didn't come with sugar or a teaspoon. However after waiting 5 minutes our coffees were luke warm and we decided to get up and serve ourselves. When it came to paying, it is very rare that I won't pay for service however the 10% service charge came to £20 and after basically serving ourselves we asked for it to be taken off. When asking for a new recipe, the waiter left the table politely however when going to the till to change the cost he was obviously disappointed and spoke to the other waiter about it and we then all recieved a glad from that waiter. I would like to point out we left a £5 tip due to having one lovely service from a young blonde boy who served out food and to the chefs.

I've visited the boot on a number of occasions in the past. My most recent visit tells me one thing, this pub has seriously gone downhill. The place is clearly understaffed with the staff rushing around like there's no tomorrow. Funnily I was actually ignored for over 10mins at the bar while patrons who arrived later on were served before me. I had a good chuckle to myself as this something I've never experienced in a Cambridge pub. Finally the food, I ordered my go to favourite the sticky toffee pudding it was........Abysmal. The quality of the pudding has significantly declined, they dont even serve ice cream with it anymore. Just some sort of whipped cream. Dear Boot it was good knowing you but you're not the same anymore, time to move on!

I have been to The Boot a few times now, and I have never been disappointed. Whether I go with one friend or seven friends, the standard has never dropped. I took my friend there today for his first time and he was really impressed. From the moment we arrived( without a reservation), we were greeted by a gentleman at the desk, and then shown our table/menus by Amanda. The young person who served us was brilliant as was everyone we came across. One gentleman (possibly one of the chefs) came through the restaurant singing away. He was so happy looking that I suggested we do a duet. It’s a pity I didn’t get other names, but it wouldn’t have mattered as everyone appeared to be enjoying their work. Imagine a quaint English pub with a country side feel on a lazy day. Inside is very snug in the bar area, while the dining area has a more upmarket dining air feel about it. Outside, while you enjoy the sun setting and the tiniest of breeze on a warm day, there are further more tables to choose from. The menu has some great choices. Both of us (couple) went for the pie 🥧 dish with fries and broad beans. The pie was, like the pub, quaint in size, however well cooked to perfection and with the gravy, was a beautiful meal. We had just one dessert which was a chocolate and orange mouse. By itself the mouse was so tasty on the pallete. I don't feel it needed the icecream or the crunch topping, however a nice choice none the less. The hot chocolate with cream and marshmallows was nice. We were well looked after, and for customer service, this was a joy to visit as an outsider to the area. Great job.

There's parking at the front and to the rear making it easy access to absolutely wonderful food, service and great outdoor space for lil'ones and bigger lil'ones. The souffle (spelting test) was unbelievably good. Many home cooks will feel jealous! Oh, ice cream....had to have more...poor waist line! After, huge steak pretending to be a Sunday roast beef!

It was a full house Thursday, and there was a lack of staff. I can find all the staff were quite exhausted. The food quality was not as good as my previous visits.

Not only was the food excellent, the menu options were some of the best I've seen. A very refreshing change from the regular pub and restaurant foods.

We loved our meal at the Boot in Histon. The menu all looked lovely and the meal we had was delicious. I highly recommend the pork roulade and the chocolate mousse!! We were brilliantly looked after by Desire - his service and good humour made our evening even more fun!

Nice place, food is excellent but I think being charged £14 for a pint of IPA and a shandy is a bit steep!

Flying visit today for lunch, Lovely food and great drinks. Best part without doubt was the fantastic staff, Desire was fab and Adam found a way to get our bottle of bubbles home without it going flat! Set lunch menu was great value for money!

Have been a semi regular here for a few years. They have a good, frequently updated menu of fairly priced dishes served in a friendly and informal setting. The staff always give a warm welcome and are professional. There is parking on site but there is a local off-road car park a very short distance away.

The pub was very busy due to the warm weather but the food was still great, with only a slightly slower than normal service.

Great place. Lovely building. The staff and food were excellent. The service was fast and food arrived quickly despite it being fairly busy. Would definitely recommend it.

Fantastic venue, great food, staff really knowledgeable and friendly, only issue was not enough staff 2 hours to get main meal.

The food was very nice, however, the speed of service and attentiveness of the staff was abysmal: it took over an hour from when we were seated until our food arrived, as well as taking over ten minutes to bring us some drinks. If you can't get food to tables in under thirty minutes, you need to let people know, as this was a work lunch booking which had been made in advance, and the delays made colleagues late for afternoon meetings.

Always good food, beer and friendly service. Lovely open fire. We would visit more often if they served food a bit earlier as my toddler has an early bedtime and feeding her after 6 is pushing our luck a bit

Amateur. Scones on display for sale “already sold”. “I haven’t put them out on a plate yet, no, we haven’t got anymore”. Bye. Can’t rate the food as I did not get any.

Stopped for lunch while visiting the nearby Duxford museum. Portions were generous, would recommend
