The Boot in St Albans

Tasty. 6 of us. All had different tacos (all very good). Vegan options given a big tick. Beef shin was off the scale delicious Sides of padron peppers and macha tots are a must.

During the summer I was sat by the clock tower in town waiting for my friends. While I was waiting a somewhat ‘questionable man’ came and started talking to me. I didn’t want to make him upset to I continued speaking to him to keep him happy. There were many people around and I think most of them saw I was very uncomfortable in the situation, and there were many other more normal men around who could have come to my aid but no one did, until, the Land Lady of the Boot came racing out and without hesitation hugged me and pretended to be my friend and started speaking to me as though we had been friends for years ( we had never met before.) she made sure that I was ok and invited me in just to wait until my friends came to meet me. That random act of kindness didn’t take much effort but she saved me from a very uncomfortable situation. I don’t think many people would have gone out of there way to do that (well I know they wouldn’t because no one else did despite there being many people around) but she did and it meant a lot to me. I just wanted to say thank you as I never had a chance to thank her since it happened. But clearly the boot is a place that is run by genuinely lovely, caring and kind people and I would like to say thank you to Mrs Land Lady (I’m sorry I didn’t get your name but you are an amazingly kind and selfless person!)

How incredible is it that the best Mexican food I’ve had in England is in the cutest pub in St Albans! Honestly can’t rate it high enough, you must visit here! Food is insane, atmosphere is so much fun, and the staff are absolute legends 🥹❤️

Stunning - world class tacos and super friendly service

We visited The Boot in St Albans yesterday for a few drinks, following a recommendation from the locals. As soon as you step in, you’re welcomed by its classic, medieval pub atmosphere, and it’s clear this is a favorite spot for locals. Prices are very reasonable, and the crowd spans all ages, adding to the pub’s inviting vibe. Everyone we met was polite and friendly, making us feel right at home. The pub is also conveniently located right in front of the famous Clock Tower, making it easy to find. A great spot to soak in the local charm!

A fantastic pub with the best Tacos I’ve ever eaten! The staff are friendly and cannot help enough, service is prompt. And if you like people watching, then this is the place for you. Make sure you try all the bottles of sauces that are put on the table 😁

Food was amazing! Have been meaning to come here for some time & the Taco’s didn’t disappoint. Massive thank you to Jessie for looking after us. she is amazing!! Will definitely be back

Absolutely fantastic place. Great service, food, atmosphere, potent Margaritas, and all at a very reasonable price. We had a very, very nice time here indeed.

Very very rude bartender. Came over and told us we were rude for holding a bottle of water after we spent loads of money on drinks and food at the pub. So uncalled for and unprofessional. Rude people work here. They look so unhappy with their job, makes me think why do you work somewhere that makes you so unhappy… do NOT recommend

Exciting news. The Boot has a Market Special on the menu at the weekends. Sourced from St Albans market. Today it was a whole mackerel served with chimichuri. Perfect and better than the one I had at Rick Steins pub the last time we were in Padstow. Great menu , great food, great service and great pub . Thankyou

High energy pub in town center!

Nice Pub, service as well, real ales are always changing, and are well keep,right in the middle of the city, see you in there, only thing is why do these pubs , have background music so loud, not just this pub, but many more do this,not everyone wants to talk loud, to be heard in their company.

I had wanted to visit Boot Cantina for ages after finding them through recommendations on Instagram and it did not disappoint! Easily reserved a table via Instagram, staff were lovely when we arrived and service was great despite how busy they were. The only slight downside was the noise, but it was a busy pub on a Saturday lunchtime, so to be expected! The food was absolutely incredible, everything had such unique flavours and everything tasted so fresh. The highlights were definitely the Beef Shin Birria Tacos and the Salsa Macha Tots. We actually think this might be the best Mexican food we have ever eaten - 5 stars!

An amazing meal, we went in without anticipation. The burger was phenomenal, I can't stop thinking about it. Staff were friendly and made visit even better.

As someone who just moved from the Mexican food capital of the states - this is PERFECT MEXICAN FOOD! . Just incredible. Perfect flavor combination of flavors, spice and smoke. I couldn’t recommend this place more. Can’t wait to come back and try again

I’ve been to the Boot several times for a drink but today had food for the first time and OMG how surprised I was!! We’ve ordered a selection of tacos and I could not tell which one was better than the other! Everything was absolutely delicious! Can not wait to have that food again! Thank you chef!

This is a real pub. The beer is excellent, and the atmosphere is brilliant. It's always very busy, whenever I go there, which is what makes it such a great pub. No food served here.

Wow ! Can I start by saying have you ever been somewhere that is just completely perfect ?💕🥰 well for me this place is the boot ! The atmosphere is cozy with complete Harry Potter - a proper old English pub ! But SURPRISE ! They serve the best tacos on earth 🌍 they are incredible and a must try when in St Albans - beats the tacos restaurants Spain and that is a massive statement to make This is by far the best place to eat when in St Albans I will be going back multiple times for more tacos ! Thanks to the chef and congrats on mastering a perfect taco.

First time in the boot and it's a lovely old pub staff are really polite and friendly and helpful didn't have food so I didn't put star it came up from Peckham london to do some shopping and next time I come to st Albans I'LL DEFINITELY BE GOING TO THE BOOT AGAIN

Popped in for a quick drink. We didn't eat so can't comment on food. The staff were friendly and helpful and we loved the atmosphere in this old pub.

Best Mexican food I've ever eaten - and that includes in Mexico. You have to try the confit duck tacos!

Over 5 pounds a pint of beer. Visited for historical reasons. Go to Wetherspoons it's half the price .

Walked in. Saw rats running about. Left straight away. Poor Hygiene. If you like rats please come here.

Massively understaffed for late night drinks impossible to get served. Missed revenue opportunities for sure. Nice to see it busy but a shame on the business front

An old English pub in the centre of town. To be honest, I've never been there outside of Pub in the Park. When I get there, the atmosphere is great as the place is absolutely packed out and conversations floe pretty easily. At the same time, the bar is packed and can take a long time to get served. I enjoy it but might not be what everyone else is looking for

Embracing the St Albans middle class dream 😉 ...

This is a lovely old historic pub on the St Albans Highstreet. The building dates to around 1420 and serves some quality Taqueria Mexican fare. There is a good selection of Craft Beer and Real Ale, that was tasty and in good condition. Highly recommended for a visit when in St Albans.

A great pub in a prime location, and sitting out on the street in the sun is the perfect spot to watch the busy world go by. It feels like there’s a lot of history to the building and the atmosphere inside is nice too, but I have to say it is an expensive pub for drinks. Otherwise, great place!

Good selection of beer, always a great buzzing atmosphere. Taco Tuesdays are great and taste authentic. My only negative comment is that I find the staff can be unfriendly at times.

I was charged £16.40 for a pint of cask ale and a large glass of Sauvingnon Blanc (Chile). The same pair of drinks costs £9.81 at the Green King pub in my local town in the same county. Decided not to stay to eat.

This is where the Hairy Bikers stopped by, and so should I. Great location near the shops or bus stops for a freshen up to quench your thirst (and hunger - if hungry) There's seating outside so you can admire the Clock Tower if you want to reach the top on open days, or better still, come on down after climbing those steps to the Clock Tower. Definitely worth a stop by with friends and family too

Good atmosphere, didn’t eat but food looked good. Sadly a few dogs yapping, not the dogs fault but the owners hence only 4 stars. Would go again

Not bad at all. We went there for a beer dinner (good selection, including several cask ales on pumps). The Mexican menu looks a bit dodgy at first glance in a place so distinctly British, but it tastes actually very, very good. The only thing is that tacos alone is a small meal, while ordering tater tots as a side dish is suddenly too much :)

Nipped in for a late evening pint and meet discuss the work plan for the next day, the pub was very lively with chatter and we couldn't hear ourselves! But I guess that is actually a good thing as it is a pub and not a conference room 😂. Beer was very nice, I had a lovely IPA. Nice place 👍

This in town historic pub could easily be overlooked but for the friendly bar staff and always friendly patrons. Could do with an extra ladies toilets though. Worth seeing at Xmas as the stsff always make a lovely festive effort which gives the pub a cosy feel.

In "downtown" or CBD, the place to go. Watch out for the low ceiling if you're tall - beers taste the same though.

What a great little pub! Very old, historical and quaint. Friendly staff and lots of craft style beer. We only popped in here for drinks, so havent tried the food. Great central location in the heart of the St Alban's main area, near the market.

Stunning tacos, far better than you have any right to expect from a pub. They seem pretty authentic (perhaps with the chili level toned down a bit) they're using great ingredients, the right queso, the corn tortillas, using nice heritage tomatoes etc. When you see tacos for £12 on a menu there's always the fear that you're gonna get two tiny little things and have to order 2 or 3 portions to stave off hunger. No such problem here you get 3 very generous tacos which in the case of the beef shin birria are packed with meat and delicious melted cheese and also fried so very filling. They come with rich beefy consomme to dip them in. Quesadilla also great, a simple dish but one of the best I've had in the UK. The pub itself is nice too, very old historic pub with low ceilings and oak beams etc (one of many in st albans admittedly), decent beer selection, is somewhere locals drink and not just a tourist spot. Not necessarily where I'd expect to find tacos but really commend them for taking a risk on something other than mediocre burgers etc.

Tucked on the corner by the clock tower. This historic and low ceilinged pub had an authentic and welcoming feel. The central compact bar. The staff were efficient, a good choice of excellent Ales well kept and presented. Food was a variety of small plates which we shared they were all well prepared and excellent. These did come up separately over 10-15 minutes which worked fine for us but could be a problem if ordering individual plates. Definitely worth a visit I will be back.

A great example of character and ambience in the centre of a medieval city. Great beers, lovely staff and fair pricing. A must visit.
