Veer Dhara One in St Albans

The menu is not your usual standard UK flock wallpaper curry house. It’s up several notches than that. We had a lamb passanda, Kaddish chicken, and a Boti Kebab, all very tasty with the Kaddish especially hot. Flat onion bhajis were crispy, nice mushroom rice but the garlic Nan could have done with more garlic. The only criticism would be the service which was great at first only to be a bit full on after a while as we were asked about 6 times from 4 different waiting staff, interupting our conversations, if the food was ok. It was very good thankyou.

Visited this place last night with a couple of friends and would recommend to anyone. Beautifully fresh-flavoured food, dishes were all of great quality and really good service.

My friend brought me here, hailing it as delicious and tom cruise's favourite. I really wasn't impressed. The menu was pretentious and overpriced. The dishes I ordered were lacking flavour and small. Staff took a long time to attend to us, even though there weren't many customers. Won't be returning.

Giving 5 star rating it's serves typical North Indian food with exact which I have always looked for in Britain. Must try place yum yum 😋

It is so good you have feel bad for the other curry houses in St albans. All round perfect place for a curry. The lunch time menu is well worth checking out aswell.

We came here for the first time after hearing good reviews from some Indian friends. I must say the place is just too good for authentic Indian food. We loved the food and portion size was also perfect. We will definitely recommend this place to all😃

I don't like Indian food. But when my younger sister recommended me to try Indian food here. I changed my mind. It was great. The spice taste was not too much. It tastes just right. The price of the lunch set is not expensive. And papadum is the most delicious I've ever eaten. I intend to come back and try their buffet soon.

Very good food we had the two persons social menu at £29.95 pp which was very good value also the service was very good as just before Christmas the place was full.

-- Great place with very reasonable prices. -- Staff have a smile on the face and won't certainly step over your toes to take orders -- food taste is fantastic for most dishes and very few others which won't tick the box for purists -- Parking is a small problem but in a few hundred feet you've got paid parking. -- felt a tiny bit cramped for space between tables/seats when going in a large group.

I was waiting to take a table, when this person came to me and said u can have this table for one hour, as I suggested you want me to leave within one hour and as I started walking towards table near bar area he came and grabbed my arm and said you ant go that side at this stage I pulled my arm and said don't pull my arm and this is very unprofessional and asked to see head chef dharmendea at this stage he said I am the manager and I was not very happy with his attitude. so wouldn't recommend at all. these people carry status and only interested in that. wouldn't recommend at all to any one.

1st visit to the restaurant. Sunday Buffet with a party of ten. Very friendly service. Nice venue & good atmosphere. Very good selection of meat & vegetarian options & a desert option. Definitely plan to revisit in the future. Added adhoc bonus a young magician wandering around the restaurant demonstrating card tricks, nice touch.

Early dinner with friends... ordered the Chicken Tikka Shashlik which was delicious.

Ordered the King Prawn Gulmohar for £16.90 and it was disgusting. The prawns had been clearly frozen so they had a consistency of mush once cooked, the onion bhaji was like biting into a concrete brick so I was just left with some rice that was edible for the sum of £35. So many better Indian restaurants in town so wouldn't bother with this place. Expensive and awful.

Went for the buffet very disappointing, service was very lazy, nobody asks how your food is, just if you’ve finished. Plus you are charged & additional service charge, for the privilege at a buffet 😂😂😂 Food was not replenished, naan rubbery no flavour, not one redeeming dish. I left the lid on the lamb curry open, because it was all sauce no meat. But it wasn’t busy so they just left it, they only replenished the popadoms. The Onions they can’t be bothered to chop up even. I have had some good food here, but there’s only one chef, an older guy that can cook. Otherwise the food is bland, totally unimpressed I can’t find one positive.

Food is always delicious whether dining in or taking out. The delivery driver was an absolute diamond!

From walking in to leaving. Absolutely no complaints. The food was top notch. Onion Bhajis & cauliflower starters. Very tasty. Chicken Curry was excellent. The best Lamb Rogan Josh around. The lamb was so tender it melted in my mouth. The service was very good & really friendly. The lunchtime menu is fantastic value for money, especially as we are all watching the pennies. Can’t wait to go back.

Terrible experience with this restaurant. The staff were unhelpful, rude and condescending, and failed to acknowledge or rectify our grievances. Two dishes were incorrectly served which is completely unacceptable and was not acknowledged/resolved. The quality of the food was poor, tasteless and not worth the price. This is the first and last time I will order at this restaurant, especially given the safety risk of receiving an incorrect meal coupled with their 3 food hygiene rating.

I went here for my brother's birthday and had the Tom Cruise chicken tikka. I started feeling ill as soon as I got home from the restaurant, I then was very unwell all through the night and until 3 pm the next day. I went to Urgent Care but my condition was deteriorating rapidly so I went to A&E where I was put on a drip. The doctor diagnosed me with food poisoning from this restaurant. I have had to have two days off work. The restaurant offered a discount for the ordeal but I would certainly not go back after this.

Great food and really interesting menu

We enjoyed a delicious takeaway via Deliveroo. Food was piping hot, well presented and very tasty! Veer Dhara included extras (three different sauces and a salad) which was a nice touch. Lovely flavours - the saag aloo was delicious and we highly recommend the assorted vegetarian starter. Thanks Veer Dhara!

Awesome place to visit for pure Indian taste. You can enjoy great food. Make sure you book the table in advance else it will be difficult to get place to sit. Service at peek time can be little problem rather I will say slow. But it is okay not that much. For good food that much some time can be adjusted. Important one parking if you driving down can be challnage as they don't have parking that to on road more then 3 car space. So plan accordingly park near by and walk down. Njoy the great Indian food

Overall was great, but it would be really helpful if for a large order like this (18 items) to label the containers as it took us some time to work out what was what!! Meal and food quality was excellent.

The ambience is so beautiful, I was feeling like I am at India. Staff behaviour is just amazing, all of them are amazing, I was served by Mr Ajay Sen, he is very humble and polite ,carrying a smiley face always ,approachable . Food quality is also very nice and taste is definitely great. Overall experience is good .

Butter chicken and the garlic nan are very nice. The famous lobster curry is nice but we do feel that lobster can easily be substituted with other seafood like prawns. The dish doesn’t bring out the lobster unfortunately. Having said that, the dish still worths a try. Servers are very attentive and polite.

June 2023: Underwhelming A trip back to St Albans and therefore we were really looking forward to a curry at Veer Dhara One. Sad to say, we were very disappointed with the food this time. Maybe the chef we had last time was off, maybe it was because we turned up at 10.20, and we were met with a greeting of "We're closing at 11pm", I'm not sure but neither of these should have made a difference, we were still customers. I had a lamb pasanda which was so yellow in colour it almost was green. The taste was pretty bland, I've had significantly better from supermarkets ☹️. The other 3 mains my group had weren't much better, and this is the same group of friends who I went with last time. After our frosty welcome, and speed ordering (fair enough), the waiters didn't get any happier with, or friendlier towards, us. It was obvious they wanted us to leave, despite other customers still eating. The atmosphere, like last time, was lacking. Just 2 or 3 other tables were in use when we arrived. My previous 5 star review has therefore been amended, The only reason it's getting 2 stars is because it was so good on the previous occasions. If my score were just based on last night then it would be 1* overall and also for each aspect. More importantly though, I'm not sure I want to return to see if it improves, I'm certainly not going to make it my restaurant of choice next time we are in the city. I'll be interested to see if they respond to this review too. August 2022: AMAZING FOOD 😀 I've been to the Veer Dhara One twice now with different groups of friends. All of them said it's the best Indian restaurant in the city and I completely agree, the food is stunning and totally worth the little bit extra. The service is friendly but not imposing or distracting. I hope this review encourages you to book a table. My only slight negative is that it has lacked a little atmosphere on both occasions as it's been nowhere near full. I know I'd also complain if it was too full so I guess I'm being a bit of a Goldilocks. Certainly it was lovely being able to converse without shouting to one another.

I can't believe I've not reviewed Veer Dhara before😬, but St Albans is the ( lads weekend which has been a thing for 35+ years ) we're all pushing late middle age now , but we're all men so we NEVER grow up we just get older. 🤪. Since Tom Cruise ate at Veer Dhara, they have capitalised on the fame and even have a selection of Tom's choices. The restaurant relocated and grew in covers. Good luck to them. However, this restaurant was brilliant before Tom and continues to be the best end to a perfect night out in one of the most historic and beautiful towns/cities, etc, in England. I used to live in England, and for me, it's York , St Albans, and Canterbury, then Rochester . All ridiculously expensive, but if you want the history, you gotta take a kick in the wallet or go to Disney for fibreglass castles and tourist TOSH. TBH, I think Tom just made a restaurant that's always been Epic, known to a wider audience and I just can't get s keema Nan where I live now, so its worth the flights/ car journey.

Terrible food. Small portions. Over priced. Bad service and manners. They will bring the bill even before you are finished with the food. Their platter size is 2 times overpriced compared to similar other restaurants and the platter size is small; even worse half of the platter is filled with some generic salad. If this is not bad enough, they will add 10% service charge to your final bill. Being an Indian myself, I can tell you this restaurant is not worth going for Indian food. Ordered a takeaway which was terrible. Lamb chops were like dog scraps. Poppadoms tasted stale. Peshwari naan was dried out. All tasted a bit old.

Authentic and quality tasting food

We drive over from Hitchin just to eat here. The food is excellent, authentic and each dish tastes different, freshly cooked and full of flavour. Amazing dhal, and the prawn tawa is perfect!

Bad service, bad attitude From manager. Asked for a dish with no chilli, seemed to be an issue but managed it a previous visit. Miraculously managed to make the dish again.

Used to be a 4 star but gone downhill in service and attitude will never go back a shame because I liked this place problem is the staff were unacceptably rude . If you want to be treated with mutual respect, go elsewhere Also to find out it has 2 star hygiene confirms this

Food tasted like curry. Service was quite slow but it was quite busy. They have toilets in the corner that made me feel a bit weird.

It used to be a good restaurant. I ordered from them many times. It was usually ok, but their food quality could be more consistent, so it was excellent but now not very nice, and also their hygiene rating used to be 5, but now it is just 2.

We went on a Sunday. It is a buffet lunch. Good selection. I'm not sure if they change the choices every week. Very busy, though. If you use a wheelchair it is the side entrance. The only issue is that you are entering the kitchen, and it is not easy to enter the building.

Great Indian restaurant and probably the best I have visited! Food was excellent with loads of vegetarian options, service was friendly and the atmosphere was great. I feel the menu is a bit more creative than other Indian restaurants I have been to. Paneer tawar masala and the chilli and aubergine curry were exceptional. I cannot fault a thing. We visited on a Sunday but chose to have the menu options rather than the buffet but the buffet did look great too. We will definitely be making the trip from Hertford when we want to eat Indian food now.

It would have been nicer not to have so many tables in the restaurant as not much room to move around. But could not fault anything else. Thanks for making my mother laws meal special.
