Mediocre food. Buffet on offer, 3 options, one of which was dry chicken that then ran out, leaving veggie lasagne and prawn noodles. Terrible service, 40 minutes between asking for bill and being able to pay. Save yourself and go elsewhere

I went to join friends (who were staying at the hotel) for dinner. They weren't made aware that the restaurant was closed, but we were reassured the full menu was available in the bar. Service was very, very slow, our waiter got our starter order wrong - after checking it with us three times - and the atmosphere was very uncomfortable. We didn't stay for a main course, we paid up and went somewhere else!

Valentine’s set menu, 4 courses, sounds simple but what I experienced that evening was so unexpected and I wouldn’t want it to end. Welcomed by a lovely Ms Kiss, we were given a glass of sparkling wine and promptly taken to our table. Our waitress Andrea made us feel very well taken care of as well as the Manager Bruno did, praise to all staff that made this evening lovely overall. Cheese and onion soup, as many times I’ve had it in my life, this one took me by surprise, chef found the perfect balance and topped it with rose petals (nice touch for the occasion). Starters were light, full of flavors, well presented, great introduction to what comes next. Main course, the star of the evening, Chalk stream trout in white sauce was a sublime choice where the chef’s skills, heart and passion were felt in every bite. Truffles and chocolate sphere cheesecake served for dessert felt like a “Thank you for coming” note that summarized the evening. It’s a second time spent at Hilton for Valentines and it looks like after last evening it will become a new tradition.

I had lunch here as a course delegate and was very impressed. Gorgeous mini veggie quiche, nice and hot and a good balance of veggies. Meat and fish choices looked good too. Lovely Greek salad. Vegetables were well cooked, asparagus was a nice addition and the new potatoes were very fresh and cooked perfectly. There was a lot of choice of salads and accompaniments, all very fresh. Didn’t have dessert as didn’t have room but there was a good choice, all beautifully presented. Definitely a lovely, well thought out lunch menu rather than just average conference catering which can sometimes be a little bland. Staff were also very polite and welcoming.

With it raining in Cambridge, we decided to stay in town for dinner and were able to get dinner booking at Hilton's Bull & Bass restaurant. The restaurant is on the upper floor and is spacious but has a cosy vibe to it. The staff were welcoming on arrival and we were seated alongside the window with a lovely view on the drizzling Downing Street. The courgette and mint fritters were absolutely delicious. Befitting the weather, we ordered hearty mains - sirloin steak and slow cooked feather blade with a Madeira sauce. The meat was cooked to medium rare perfection. The side order of grilled vegetables was a simple standout - best asparagus I have had all season!! We treated ourselves with dessert and went with the special - raspberry creme brulee and a chocolate mousse with salted caramel ice cream. Great finish to the evening. On a side note, the open kitchen put the chefs on show, and we even had the chef come out to the table which was a nice touch. Would definitely come again.

Situated right in the middle of town next to the side door of John Lerwis department store ( easy to find if you're from out of town. We live close by. OK, it's actually a hotel dining room (City Hilton) but we went in as non-residents for a quick bar meal and we really surprised at how good both the food and the floor service were. We both chose Club Sandwich which was the best we had had for some time. Lots of chicken, fresh fried egg, a decent sized salad with it and great fries. Not a lot of atmosphere here but for an hour it was very spacious and pleasant, good views of the street below with its hustle and bustle. East access up 1 floor from street by escalator and there is an elevator, too. Toilets are spotlessly clean. Great for a tourist to take a break and rest those feet, right in city centre.

The experience was so bad that I felt I had to leave a review straight away. Tonight was my graduation and 6th wedding anniversary and I was celebrating with my husband, parents, sister and 2 very young children. We are actually staying at the hotel and wanted to eat early (6pm) before the children got too tired. We also thought that a Hilton restaurant would be a safe bet. We sat down shortly before 6pm and ordered immediately. 15 minutes later, however, we were informed that the meal 4 of us had ordered (beef brisket) was not available. 40 minutes later (and some reminding) our drinks arrived but our food took a full hour. They had also forgotten my husbands meal and 2 side dishes which arrived after everyone else had finished. When his chicken did arrive it was laughable, 3 deep fried chicken legs! One of the steaks was ordered well done with a creamy sauce but arrived pink with a mustard sauce, my seafood tagliatelle was fine in itself but the beard had not been scrubbed off the mussels and there was a skin on the sauce where it had been kept warm. My little girl’s hotdog was actually 2 normal sausages in a baguette and the fries tasted like oven chips. When my husband spoke to the manager firstly to chase the meal she apologised and explained that they had recently lost a key member of staff. However, later on when all the order was messed up and the food proved substandard we asked for her again to complain. She apologised again and said she would make a goodwill gesture on the bill. Considering the disaster of a meal that, frankly, we hadn’t really eaten much of (my husband didn’t touch his, nor did my little girl) we had expected quite a sizeable concession on the bill. When the bill did arrive it was a measly £40 off £180. Now, there were a few drinks on that bill that we were more than happy to pay for but when we all made it clear to the manager that we thought she was being unreasonable, she became incredibly agitated and defensive, almost insinuating that we had orchestrated the whole thing! I was incredibly insulted and to say that the experience soured what should have been a special day is an understatement. I realise this post has turned into a rant but it was so bad we even thought there might be candid cameras somewhere!

I'm afraid this restaurant does not do the Hilton chain justice! (It's part of the hotel). We visited on a Friday evening, the restaurant was very quiet which puzzled us slightly as the hotel was busy and we anticipated a problem getting a table. No problem though! We were two of about a dozen diners seated. The menu wasn't extensive, and we hoped that the small selection was made up for in the quality of the food! Sadly not! My wife started with the Beef Carpaccio which she described as 'cured meats out of a packet' - pretty tasteless. I started with the Mac + Cheese (+roasted garlic+chorizo+crayfish tails). The latter three ingredients were conspicuous by their absence. The mac and cheese was dry and tasteless. I left most of it! Again, out of a pack and into a microwave we suspected. We had both opted for the 'B&B Signature Burger'. When you're paying £15.50 for a burger it has to be good - sadly this was not! Again pretty tasteless with a very strange 'soup bowl' full of chipotle mayonnaise (each!!) and worst of all OVEN chips! The Shropshire blue cheese and chorizo (thinly sliced and out of a packet!) that was supposed to be inside the burger were virtually non existent. We both left a god deal of the burger and most of the tasteless oven chips, oh and 2 huge bowls of chipotle mayonnaise of course! Weird! Our waitress was very friendly but the food was so slow. The 'open plan' kitchen on full view to diners didn't help - just one chap on his own putting the dishes together. Certainly NOT a chef - more a 'food assembly operative'! Needless to say, we weren't charged for one starter nor either burger. Sadly we were charged £36 for a very mediocre bottle of wine! I shan't be eating here again in a hurry. A shame as the Hilton hotel itself was actually very good!

I have been to the bar/cafe here at the Hilton before, and decided to go for “afternoon tea” with a friend to celebrate a big birthday. I am saddened to say the food was well below par. The sandwiches were soggy, the chocolate on the eclair was melting/running off and the service, although polite etc. was quite frankly less than I would expect from an establishment of this standard. Very disappointed this time. ☹️

Having been to this restaurant four or five times across six months on business trips (budget provided by my company hence why I kept coming), I’ve eaten here enough to make some supported observations. Each time, the food has been incredibly slow to come (upwards of 40 minutes) and this includes when we were one of three tables - this is obviously a pattern of poor management. When the restaurant is as much as half full, the entire staff become manic. I’ll paint a picture of this week’s experiences: tonight every waiter was rushing around like a headless chicken and the maitre d’/manager (goatee bloke) looked like he was about to run away from the restaurant with nerves. Yesterday, when there were only a few tables, our food was taking a while so we asked about the status of our food and overheard the chefs saying to the waiter “I’M NOT A MACHINE!”. Please, for the sake of your overworked chefs and waiting staff, hire some more kitchen workers.

We visited the Book Room Restaurant for dinner on a Sunday evening during the August bank holiday weekend. We were staying at the hotel for a few nights, and so decided to dine here on our last night.I'd say the restaurant was about a third full, but this didn't stop the experience from being rather chaotic. The main problem was that everything took far too long. Drinks, starters, mains, etc. Everything took forever, despite only a few people dining at the time! The staff were all very nice (and apologetic), but it couldn't help alleviate the feeling of them not knowing what was going on. Our main waiter, whilst extremely pleasant, had a very low standard of English, which resulted in a certain amount of confusion as well. The food was passable. My starter of duck egg was ok, despite the egg itself looking as though it had been cooked in the same mould as McDonald's uses for their egg McMuffins! The braised beef main course was dry and lukewarm, but flavoursome. We didn't have dessert, but shared a rather strange bottle of Malbec. It was sweet and light - definitely not what I expect from a Malbec. Not very nice. The total bill was about £70. Frankly, this was way too expensive for the standard of food we received.Whilst not being unpleasant per se, I'm afraid I can't recommend the Book Room restaurant. There are simply too many better places to eat in Cambridge. I'd strongly encourage the hotel to give their restaurant an overhaul.

We wanted a glass of pinot noir and none was available. Failing that a glass of Provence rose, a favourite summer drink everywhere this year. None available. We ordered two steaks and vegetables. We had to pay extra for the SAUCE. First time we have ever had to do that in a restaurant. We had a longish wait despite 2 chefs on duty and our meals were obviously sitting waiting to be given out for a while. We realised we hadn't been given our vegetables and had to ask for them...yes they were sitting up there too. Two waiting staff who couldn't have been very busy!! We won't be back for an evening meal. However, breakfast is very good. If I were the GM I would sort out that restaurant! We were staying at the Cambridge City Hotel and therefore decided to eat in the restaurant. On the first night, the service was rather chaotic. There were a number of dishes unavailable. Customers were being advised that the food might take 40 minutes or more (due to lots of room service requests?). Initially I was told that would be unable to use a certain food discount card because it had not been preauthorised (the restaurant had always accepted it in the past. The waiter tried to communicate with the duty manager to authorise the use of the card, but was unable to do so and so eventually very sensibly took the decision to accept the card. A number of other diners gave up and didn't bother staying to eat. However, the food we were served was really good - no complaints at all about the quality. To avoid any possible repeat performance the following evening, we booked for the following evening. Unfortunately, at 16.00 the following day we were telephoned by the hotel reception to be told that the restaurant was closed that evening due to 'issues in the kitchen'.We have always been really impressed with the restaurant on our previous visits and so this episode was really disappointing. We hope for better things next time we visit.

Stayed at the City Hotel Cambridge recently for a University interview (not mine!.......) and decided to eat at the hotel restaurant for ease. First signs were promising. I had pate which was first class, the other two had scallops which they enjoyed. For my main I had sirloin which was requested as medium and arrived medium rare. Yes, I know - send it back to get it put under the grill for a bit longer. But........why should I delay my fellow diners from starting their meal? Over cooked on the outside, undercooked inside, maybe the Cook has not quite got the technique correct yet. The other two had chicken and duck which, I'm told, was not too good. After my main I decided not to have a pudding but the other two had sorbet. One of them had a spoonful and left the rest. The staff were pleasant but I had to ask for my glass of red half an hour after it had been ordered. On the plus side, the hotel itself is very good. All of the staff seem to understand that keep the customers happy and they will return. Well done to them.

I actually had a meal in the bar as that's where the staff wanted to point me. I must say the steak and ale pie I had was absolutely delicious, the chunky chips some of the nicest I've had. On a minor side the service did seem a little slow on the desert front and the main course even though they seemed mainly empty. I reckon this might be due to being cooked to order, I did hear they were using local ingredients, but I'm sure to try the main restaurant as the bar food defiantly shows they are improving and becoming a very nice place to eat.

When we were shown to our table we were asked if we would like bread and olives 'whilst we were waiting' - it seemed to indicate a long wait. The menu looked short on choices. Since we are habitual Friday fish eaters, we both opted for scallops to start, with Sea Bass as mains.Any reservations we had felt disappeared with the first mouthful. The scallops were served on a base of coulis of celeriac, a perfect accompaniment. The sea bass was steamed and accompanied by pak choi and rice in a Thai recipe which melted in the month with spices which mixed deliciously on the palate. We were so impressed that we returned for a further dinner on Sunday evening. This time I had potato and leek soup, followed by breast of chicken on mashed potato, My wife settled fo duck pate and sirloin steak. Again there were few fellow diners, again our meal was cooked to perfection the ingredients perfectly blended to provide an unusually enjoyable eating experience. The cooks were not afraid to blend ingredients imaginatively. The pate was served with brioche - my wife had not experienced this combination before, but pronounced it a great success. A three flavour sorbet, completed another delicious meal.On leaving, we expressed surprise that the restaurant had been so quiet, to be told that the bar had been very busy with their menu well patronised. It seemed odd that the bulk of the evening's clientele had opted for fast food in a bar environment at prices not that much lower than the restaurant's, which are comparable to the Cambridge average, And where were the locals? It is true that people who are not staying in a hotel rarely eat there, but we cannot understand why the word has not got around locally just how good the food here is. Certainly a vigorous promotion campaign is indicated - this restaurant deserves, even demands, a much larger and regular clientele.

It is located at the Cambridge City Hotel (used to be The Crowne Plaza), and has good dishes, and lovely service.

We recently celebrated our son's graduation at the Bloomsbury Restaurant in the Cambridge City Hotel - the staff were excellent (thanks Mikel and Sofia!) and the food absolutely delicious. It seemed a shame that the restaurant wasn't busier - with the high standard of service and food it deserves to be fully booked every night and I highly recommend a visit to any visitor to Cambridge.

Having been here before, we knew what to expect. The food was very good. . and freshly prepared. The service was excellent. Why was it so quiet on a Saturday night? The price was average for Cambridge.

Really good food. Staff were very attentive. Reasonable cost when using a well known discount card. Only downside was the beer. No real ale - but the house red wine was reasonable.

The restaurant is on the first floor and it is open plan. The staff were polite and quick, however our lamb was not the best of dishes ... meat not good quality and the juice around it was quite "soupy", so thin that we asked for spoons to get it as the vegetables were of child portions (no potatoes). In the end we ordered bread to mop it up. Just as well we used tastecard for discount, otherwise we would have been very disappointed. Next time, if i will eat there again, i may try the steak, looked better when next door table ordered theirs...(grass greener on the other side?...)

We had a bad experience here in October but wanted to give it a second chance following a takeover and promised improvements. Food was excellent, steak recommended, staff polite, helpful and above all smiling. You can still use the gourmet society card here on certain days with up to 50% off so it makes it really good value then. I will be back. Thank you to Trisha and her team. A job well done.

For a hotel of this standard the food and value in this restaurant are poor. There is a sign near the restaurant that states that the food is inspired by Borough Market [famous London food market]. That is so completely not true and almost insulting - the market has beautiful fresh food. The smoked trout and smoked salmon that we had for our starter were not fresh or of good quality. They were of such poor quality that we decided not have a main course we felt a bit unwell.

We stayed at the Crown Plaza hotel. Our family of 3 had a three course pre-theater dinner at the Bloomsbury restaurant. The food was good, and plentiful, a very good value deal. Our waitress, Katrina was very attentive to our needs. The Chef came out to check on us. The dessert, Trifle and Trinity cream were excellent.

The restaurant is in the centre of Cambridge on the first floor of the Crowne Plaze Hotel.Have had lunch here many times in the past and have no complaints with both the food or the service. There is usually plenty of staff on hand.Beware of going in the bar first though. Prices are high even by Cambridge standard and service can be a little slow.

Bad experience. Many items on the menu were not available at all. The service was unjustifiably slow (only 3 tables busy). what I had was so "flat" that I cannot even seriously review..

I have stayed at Crowne Plaza Cambrdge or the past 8 years, and have seen the improvement year on year. I particularly enjoy breakfast at Bloomsbury's. The selection is solid British - eggs, sausages, mushroom, baked beans etc. I have always gone for a ham and mushroom omelette, and would like to commend Chef Simon Smith. He does an excellent omelette, taking care to fry the ham and mushroom till aromatic before folding them in the egg. He has a professional attitude and a sunny smile, which cheers up a bleak English winter morning!I would also like to highly commend Waitress Fiona Simm who has a sunny disposition and is her natural self in making sure guests are comfortably sitted, and served well, without fail every morning.Bloomsbury's is fortunate to have staff who are strongly service-oriented. WELL DONE AND KEEP IT UP!

The staff is very pleasant and warmly welcome all guests. All of them are really gorgeous, in particular the middle age lady with the eye glasses and two pagers, and the young lady with red hair (sorry that we did not get their names).Prices are very reasonable for a four stars hotel's restaurant.

We atayed at the Crowne Plaza over the Christmas holidays to attend services at King's College. We had one breakfast (by choice) and one dinner (by need) in this restaurant. The breakfast was extremely overpriced for the items available. The dinner on Christmas Day was a disaster. It took almost 3 hours to complete because of service problems, menu limitations, and what appeared to be poor planning on the part of management. The food was prettily presented but that was about it. If you stay at this hotel, go out and eat elsewhere--like Jamie's Italian, which is nearby.

Awful meal accompanied by Flat pint, Bolognese ragu was slightly undercooked pasta combined with greyish mince, utterly bland, like black and white English cuisine from about 1974. Pint of Lager dead flat on arrival. I’d avoid eating here if you can. Massive dissapointment, I think under new ownership since I ate here last a year or so ago.

Muy pocos clientes comer y el ambiente es muy tenue. La comida está bien preparada y el servicio es rápido, pero con tan pocos diners no sorprendente.
