The Bonchurch Inn in Isle of Wight

Following a few disappointing meals around the island i was beginning to think my expectations were just too high until I found the Bonchurch Inn. Wow, what an experience!!! The Inn is nestled in a leafy quiet area between Ventnor and Bonchurch, down a cobbled lane. It was like stepping back in time. The staff were so friendly. The food was sensational. I had the fillet steak, thick, tender, juicy. Well seasoned and probably the best steak I've had EVER!!!!!. This came with an impressive Mediterranean salad which was packed with olives, sundried tomatoes, rocket leaves, peppers, tomatoes and of course chunky chips which were homemade. The Bonchurch Inn is going to be my place to go from now on.

Found by chance when looking for somewhere for lunch. Lovely place with a small, but varied menu. Beer on tap. We'll def be back!

Life changing lasagna may not actually be life changing, but it is delicious and very tasty. Cosy and comfortable small pub with great wine selection and it is also dog friendly. In the summer there is a good outside seating area too. Just been there for dinner today and it is still as good as always. I had shin of beef stew which was delicious. Also very filling, I could not eat it all! Lovely family run pub and also completely dog friendly.

Superb food and a really good find. It is nestled between Ventnor and Bonchurch and it is well worth visiting. Their “Life changing Lasagna” was awesome and I cleaned out my plate completely. The house red wine was a perfect pairing. If you get the chance, eat there ! It is dog-friendly too

This place is a hidden gem and definitely worth a visit. This cosy place offers so much character and amazing food. The staff were warm and welcoming and offered great insights into the food and drinks on offer. The food was unbelievable and some of the best we have had. The lasagna was delicious and perfectly cooked and the garlic bread was a proper baguette with rich garlic butter. 10/10 would visit again

Tried to book a table here, called, nobody answered, filled the form on website, nobody called, went there to find out that no booking made. Lady from reception was rude and said that she answered to all enquiries. I didn’t mind mind to pay for a table if 5, considering that a steak cost £30+, same as london city prices. Avoid!

Lovely food, atmosphere and amazing staff, who couldn’t help enough. Life Changing Lasagne is just that but rest of the menu is outstanding too. Most try if you’re in the area - book to avoid disappointment.

Great food , an amazing service.

Just had an amazing dinner at the Bonchurch Inn, it exceeded our expectations. Friendly, helpful bar staff and superb food, what more can you ask for. The life changing lasagne was 10/10, as was the vegan lasagne. Wanted to book for the next evening but sadly fully booked. Will definitely be back when we are next over to the island!

Would like to give it a higher rating as the food was nice & massive portions, but service was incredibly slow (both drinks and food - mains served 2 hours after arriving) and the place had an unusual, uncomfortable atmosphere. To eat we had sweet potato fish cakes / salmon & crab bruschetta (both lovely) then king prawn linguini which was also decent

Went to the Bonchurch Inn a few weeks ago. The food was amazing with big portions which was great for how much it was priced. The staff were very friendly and it was a nice and comfortable place to be. The life changing lasagne was life changing and overall the experience was great!!

Absolutely lovely food and exceptional service. Definitely worth booking, just park in the street and wander in.

We popped in for some food. Had the 'life changing' lasagne, which was very creamy, although possibly not life changing. A nice little pub, tucked away with its own courtyard. Not overly full with many regulars. Three stars as service was slow and had to go to the bar to pay for the meal, otherwise we would have been there all night waiting for the bill.

All I can say is just go a try the inn for yourselves. You won't be disappointed

Didn't stay in the accommodation but the bar and staff were wonderful all round. Nice little sun trap with plenty of seating too.

Great family run pub with excellent Italian food.

We were in the mood for something a bit different to typical pub food, and we knew the setting here, down a charming little lane, was lovely. They were able to fit us in even though we'd neglected to book, and the staff were lovely and attentive. The space was cozy--the courtyard outside was nice, and the two main dining areas had great atmosphere. The food was absolutely amazing. Some of the best we've had on the island. The life changing lasagna was, in fact, delicious. Lusciously rich and creamy. The spaghetti Bolognese was also top notch. And the portions were huge! We had to ask for some of our dinner to be packed for takeaway. We look forward to visiting the next time we're here on holiday.

We went in for some drinks and starters, absolutely loved the place, they have done it beautifully, staff was very warm and welcoming, food was delicious, overall really enjoyed the atmosphere and our time here. Also very dog friendly place. Would love to visit again.

Lovely charming and fantastic food

My partner and I went to the Bonchurch Inn because we were under the impression that it had been turned into an Italian restaurant. So we dressed accordingly. It was a pub. The lasagne was, admittedly, amazing. But it was not the romantic meal out location that we were expecting from Facebook reviews. Our fault, I suppose. The food was excellent. The service was friendly.

We just ate here, did not stay. What a place! Super friendly staff, delicious food (the local crab is amazing, highly recommend the penne) and a good selection of wine. Put it this way, my partner and I had a full delicious meal and enough drink to get pretty merry and it cost us about 70 quid. Pretty good going!

Excellent atmosphere, service and particularly noteworthy was the food, which was incredible! I had the vegetarian calzone which was delicious. We were visiting the IoW and it topped off our fantastic day off with a friendly local meal.

Some of the best Italian food we've ever eaten. A unique and unmissible experience. Locatedin an historic inn, the restaurant at the Bonchurch Inn serves a short menu that is excellent in every way - true, authentic Italian flavours. The inn itself is a bit of a time warp - in a good way. No corporate decor, no fashionable menu choices - just great ingredients, expert cooking and fine flavours. Try it.

We've been coming to the Isle of Wight in January for a number of years now but had never got round to eating at the Bonchurch Inn. So glad we did so this year. The food was wonderful and the staff very friendly and welcoming. Definitely one too return to.

Went on New Year's Day for lunch, and the staff were so welcoming. I chose the mac & cheese with parma ham and it was the best I have ever tasted! My husband chose the lasagne which was equally as good. Well done Bonchurch Inn!

Wonderful building set in an old cobbled courtyard. The menu and food is thoughtful and inventive though also has pub favourites too. Dog friendly.

Lovely food by people who care. Just the place to stop for refreshment once youve climbed the two sets of steps and fed the ducks on the pond. Bonchurch is a special place.

Delicious food and friendly staff

This is a friendly, slightly eccentric, pub in Bonchurch specialising in Italian-themed food. The service was good and the ambience was really satisfying. We both had the Life-Changing Lasagne and, two days on, we are still awaiting the promised transformation. It was delicious, mind you.

Delicious family meal. Service first class. Adults and children enjoyed the meal in rustic surroundings.

Service is a joke, and food is bang average preprepared freezer food. Imagine turning up for an 8pm reservation, taking over an hour to get your main, and then being told the kitchen is closed so we can't have desert. The staff just decided it was time for them to start drinking and were just sat about drinking wine. Somehow disgruntled when we asked for the bill, it was bizarre.

Only stopped off for a couple of drinks but the staff were very friendly and the pub itself had plenty of atmosphere and good outside eating spaces. We will return.....p.s. very popular for food, so if you want to eat you are advised to book ahead!

A magical place for a pint or glass of wine after a day at the beach or a long walk. Also a cosy dining experience, with some seriously lovely lasagne on offer.

Nice old fashioned pub tucked away in Bonchurch. With beer from the barrel. Friendly staff. Good food. We had homemade crab fish cakes and scampi. Crab fish cakes was the best meal this week at a reasonable price. No room for dessert although they did seem a little expensive. Well worth a visit.

Hidden gem. Lovely food...but don't come if you're in a hurry. Sit, relax. Enjoy your drinks and the setting. Chat to the staff (if they're not too busy! and other patrons, especially the locals. Food will arrive when it's ready...and it's worth the wait! Will absolutely visit again.

A lovely old character pub, the Courtyard is like being abroad in a taverna, great food and pleasant hosts.

We ate here tonight with a 6pm booking. What friendly service and fresh, delicious food. Our kids were treated with such kindness, and the food was amazing. Husband had crab cakes to start then beef special. I had spinach cannelloni with the freshest spinach I've ever had inside, and delicious home made cheese and tomato sauce. Such a local gem.

Can highly recommend the pasta dish at this family run Italian restaurant /pub. Good atmosphere and attentive staff.

Came back for their signature macaroni cheese. Never had anything like it. Always busy and booking in advance is recommended. Drinks are never flat and staff are extremely friendly. Not much parking normally, you need to park on the street and fairly easy to find. Walk down the drive way and it's on the left. Great views to the mountain.

A quirky little pub up a heart-attack inducing hill. I had the macaroni cheese carbonara which was out of this world. A lovely warming and filling dish. Great staff too, very friendly.

Superb Italian food, friendly staff couldn't do enough. Has a unique ambiance of it's own. A couple of things to note. It gets very busy always make a reservation and there is only limited street parking.

Staff helpful , and tasty food , small inside lay out with a nice terrace with additional seating. Quirky & the four dishes we tried , all hit the mark, at a reasonable price.

We stopped off for a pint and loved the pub. Have yet to try the food which has been highly recommended, will come again to try it for ourselves.

We booked a table here in advance of our stay on the island after careful consideration of the menu ensuring it suited the needs of our family - including a vegetarian, and other dietary needs. On arrival we found it difficult to park close by as there is no car park and the surrounding roads are mainly double yellow lines. We were greeted in a friendly manner and shown to our table, where we ordered some drinks. We were then told of various items not available from what was already a fairly limited menu. One of these unavailable items was veggie lasagne with the alternative given to us as meat lasagne (not much use to the vegetarians in our party). We were really struggling to select what to eat from the depleted menu. When our drinks were brought, the water was unclear, the soft fizzy drinks were flat and the beer was warm, flat and sour tasting. We decided at this point to leave without eating and to go elsewhere. Following leaving this review on a different review site, I have been contacted by the manager/ owner of the establishment, asking if he could talk through my review. I agreed to do so - they have a right to know why we were unhappy with a view to ensuring this doesn't happen again to future customers. What then followed was paramount to bullying. I have been shouted at, talked over and ridiculed for my thoughts, to a point where I refused to continue the conversation. I will not be bullied into removing a review of what are my genuine experiences. Prior to this evenings phone call, I was surprised to be one of only a few negative reviews. I'm now starting to understand why!

Fantastic all round! Great food and hospitality. We went there both nights of our 2-night stay in Ventnor and it was the absolute highlight. So friendly and welcoming and just the best food! I've never seen such a huge tiramisu for dessert - amazing!! Thank you so much!
