Only dropped in for a coffee and a chat, lovely staff good atmosphere and would highly recommend

Celebrated my 70th with my wife. A fabulous dining experience. Great food and service. My Monkfish was delicious! A special evening for us both. Returned on 30th August for our Wedding anniversary dinner, which we both enjoyed very much.

As always, the food was excellent. We can highly recommend the Boathouse for Lunch or Dinner the setting is delightful.

We had a lovely evening here. The service, good and atmosphere were excellent soI hope I will visit again soon. Would definitely recommend if you are in the area.

The food was nice and the girl taking our order was pleasant, I found the guy to be somewhat indifferent.

I would like to highlight the most important thing in this place, it is service. Now, those days it is such an important for both side as a business to be recommended. I have met with very high quality customer service in "The Boathouse Amberley". Besides, wonderful atmosphere, good food. Highly recommend. Wow! Can’t believe we haven’t been here before! Best food experience we’ve had for a very long time. Stunning decor and location. Very welcoming staff. All engaging and friendly. Delightful menu. We had clams and stuffed courgettes flowers for our starters. Excellent portion sizes, full of flavour and perfectly cooked. For mains we had lobster spaghetti and their special Tuscany pizza. Spaghetti was very tasty with loads of sauce. Pizza was lovely a crispy. For dessert we shared their frangipane which was amazing. Everything is so fresh and light. Can’t wait to come again with friends and family.

We went for a hike with the family and had a table booked for lunch. Food was good, but service was awful. They made us feel unwelcome and as if we didn't belong there. I guess it has to do with us being dressed for a hike. Be it as it may, poor hospitality, spoiled the good food.

We came to the festival. It was brilliant. The weather was hit and miss but it didn’t affect the fun had. People of all ages were having a great time dancing. The music was great and the food was lovely. I enjoyed it, my parents enjoyed it and my nieces and nephews enjoyed it. All generations. Will be back next time. Well done to all the staff for making it happen

Fab venue by the river. Great pizza. Long wait for service and waitress forgot our water while serving others. One more staff member and it'll be very good.

Great mediterranean/British fusion food. We sat outside on a wonderful summer's day with views on the river Arun and the South Downs. Moderately pricey but well worth it

We had a lovely lunch on Sunday at the Boathouse. Seriously impressive menu, lovely room and terrace and great loos. We though the food was grown up, unfussy and delicious. Will look forward to coming back.

Popped in for lunch after walking part of Southdowns way. Lovely food and service they managed to provide a gluten free option for my sister and do allow dogs so ticked all our boxes.

To the chap below, it’s not a Builders Cafe. Been here many a time and the staff are more than accommodating but they have a menu like any other restaurant and a sausage bap isn’t on it

A friend and I were walking the South Downs and thought we would pop in the Boathouse for a sausage sandwich and cup of tea. We were the only ones in there at first opening in the morning. We asked for the sandwich and was told promptly, "we can't do that, but can offer you a full English or Eggs Benidict." We couldn't believe how un flexible they were. We would suggest they review their customer service. If it was busy or people queuing, we could understand, but that was not the case. Needless to say, we walked out on an empty stomach.

Lovely evening here, great atmosphere in a beautiful setting. Wonderful to watch the sun go down but I imagine it’s a great view any weather! Delicious pizzas and tap beer. Puddings were excellent too! Staff attentive and kind. Thank you!

My partner had been telling me about the Boathouse for ages, and we decided to visit here a couple of weeks back! The interior has been done beautifully and just feels right. The view of the river with the sunset was amazing. The staff were very friendly and courteous. Now, to the real point of the review.. the food. We had a starter to share, pork shoulder croquettes that had the most wonderful taste. For main, we shared the monk fish tail and also got a pizza as we had heard so much about the pizza. Both were incredible. Neither of us had ever tried monk fish tail but were shocked at just how amazingly tender and tasty this was. Overall it was an excellent experience with great food in a beautiful restaurant with excellent staff! Highly recommend!

Wow! What a find. We were walking the South Downs Way and staying in Houghton. Booked this and had the best meal on our trip with amazing service in a lovely location. We would make the detour to come here again. Fabulous. Thank you!

My husband and I stopped here for lunch and were delighted with the atmosphere and very friendly reception. The monk fish tails I had were delicious and cooked to perfection. My husband thoroughly enjoyed the wood fired pizza. We will go back next time we are in the area.

Found this place by accident, there is no signs on the building from the car park so we thought it was a farm building, wonderful food, service was OKa little slow, prices were on the upper range for lunch but the quality was superb. Highly recommended

What an absolute delight to find a place that understands interior design and top quality food. We visited a while back over a busy sunny weekend and couldn’t get in so returned yesterday with friends for a delightful long lunch. From start to finish it was amazing and the food couldn’t have been fresher! All cooked to perfection with generous portions, non of the crazy tasting menu stuff that drives me crazy! The menu changes monthly I believe. I had the monkfish tail for mains and it didn’t disappoint, absolutely delicious, perfectly cooked and beautifully presented. All tables have been set out well and considered. We all had a lovely view of the river and then moved to the sofa area for our coffees after. I wish I had taken some pictures but we were all too busy enjoying ourselves so I’ve shared some form their website. I really recommend the house white wine (organic and available by the glass) went perfectly with the monkfish. We will definitely return, would love to see it at night also as the lighting has been set out to make for a gorgeous glowing restaurant. Cant fault this place at all. Book it you won’t regret it.

Empty restaurant, owner could see there were kids, and regardless of how many provisions we had, or protective gear we had on, some shelter and the ability to buy a few drinks from them would have been nice. Not just say "it's a private pontoon." Service one star. Atmosphere one star. Can't rate the food because we didn't have any.

I reiterate everything said by Jonathan Hedger above as I too was in the group that wanted to come to the empty garden for a drink and maybe food as respite and safety from the stormy weather. We had kids with us and yet despite this, we were turned away even though the place was empty which meant we did a 20km paddle without proper food. I see the owner/respondent blames it on untrained staff but the person who turned us away seems to very much resemble the owner/respondent so little confused by response above. Sad to see such ill spirited attitude at a hospitality venue. Paddlers and kayakers - if doing this stretch of river, do not rely on being able to stop at this place for a break and it’s only spot for about 20km.

We stayed at an Airbnb in Amberley and The Boathouse was literally next door. How lucky were we? This place is amazing! After a day of hiking and enjoying nature we were ready for some great food and this place exceeded our expectations! Service was warm and friendly, the restaurant was beautifully decorated as well. My husband's starter of burrata with strawberries and basil looked amazing but I wasn't getting a look in. He had the ravioli for mains and I had monkfish, which was absolutely gorgeous. A bottle of rose went down a treat as well. It was a full house but not overly noisy. If back in the area I would definitely make it a point to eat here again.

I am sure the food is delicious, but when we were caught in a torrential downpour whilst paddle boarding on the river Arun we (a group of 8 including children) found the only place we could get safely onto land was by The Boathouse. Despite seeing that we had children with us and were cold, wet and in a state of distress, the manager came out and told us we were not allowed to land there and had to re-enter the water which we were forced to do given we had no other option. Had it been a gloriously sunny day with diners on the terrace, I could understand why he wouldn't want a dishevelled bunch of paddlers ruining the vista. But in this case the restaurant was empty and we were genuinely simply seeking the safety of dry land whilst the thunderstorm passed. I hate to ruin your good reviews, but I do not think turning away people in distress is ever acceptable.

We are writing this review not based on the food but about the attitude of a member of staff. We were visiting friends in the area and decided to eat at The Boathouse. We went in to book a table for the evening and whilst we were booking, we can only presume it was the owner, a blonde woman who was giving us such dirty looks like something on the bottom of her shoe that we later decided to cancel. Maybe the woman in question should focus on not treating people with such disrespectful looks and judging people and focus on customer service I am sure the food is great here, but to eat in an establishment where staff look down upon you is not for us

I stumbled upon this restaurant accidentally when enjoying a motorbike trip , and it made my weekend . Every course was heaven to my taste buds - wonderfully fresh flavours and many layers to each mouthful - the service was very friendly and I was made welcome with a table at the bar when there were no other free tables (and I was on my own anyway) - oh and Jasper makes a mean Virgin Mojito! 😊

Wonderful lunch, great food and great service. We stumbled across the Boathouse a couple of weeks ago and came back to try the restaurant on Sunday. The food was first class and the staff were friendly and welcoming. This will be our new go to restaurant. We’ll be back in a weeks time to dine with the parents one evening. A huge plus for us was that we could take our well behaved little dog with us and enjoy a lovely walk afterwards. A huge thanks to Jasper and his team

Used to be a favourite for my family back in the day but then closed and now revived and renewed by fabulous people who know about really good food and wine. A perfect place for that special meal together. Gorgeous interior but we chose one of the outside tables looking out to the Downs. Simply magical. We’ll definitely be back

Beautifully decorated restaurant, with outdoor seating overlooking the Arun. We had a range of courses over lunch, the clam starter was absolutely delicious. The monkfish, lamb and steak cooked excellently. Nice wine list too. Great restaurant and we will be going back!

What a happy accident today, had no idea it was open. Had lunch at The Boathouse, great menu, lovely friendly atmosphere, super location. The tiramisu is devine! We shall return.

Every single dish was delicious. Eg. Ricotta popping out of a courgette flower. Attention to detail was amazing. A must visit. Thanks for the warm welcome with 2 kids and a dog.

The most delightful place with very tasty, authentic Italian food, made on the premises. Run by a wonderful, experienced husband (chef) and wife (front of house) team, who have recently renovated and reopened the Boat House with an enthusiastic backer. A very attractive interior and exterior setting on the river. You will need to book. When they get time, they should provide somewhere to hang coats etc. As the weather becomes cold and wet everybody turns up fully clad and there is no room at the tables to store outer clothing. I am sure they will get the web site working soon, in the meantime, telephone to secure a booking and you will really enjoy it!

Stunning location right in the riverbank by the bridge. We visited in the evening and it still looked great all lit up at night. The boathouse has a great interior and feels like you’ve left the quite village into a lively restaurant you’d find in town. Food was great and could tell was freshly made and the pizza oven on show is a nice touch too. Would definitely go back.

Had the most lovely evening here on the recent opening night. The atmosphere is fabulous, the decor is beautiful and the food is utterly delicious. A brilliant new addition to our local area and we can’t wait to go back!

Just had lunch at The Boathouse and really enjoyed it. The place is still being refurbished, but the 'pop up' kitchen served great food... I'm looking forward to the place opening up fully.. if you like unpretentious, fresh Italian food, I would recommend it to all.

Words fail me, this is a quite exceptional sensorial and gastronomic experience. Jasper and his hugely experienced and charming team deliver big on flavour and small scale innovation. If this achingly beautifully set pop-up is just the amuse-bouche to the proper restaurant opening in October then West Sussex… get ready to hear about the next prospective Michelin guide entry! Lovely terrace, riverside downland sun-trap…. what a discovery. Can’t wait for the full menu.

First visit, had a lunchtime pizza and beer. Just fantastic. The pizza cooked in a wood fired oven was full of flavour, fantastically presented. Sat outside on the balcony in the sun.
