The Boathouse in North Devon

The Baked Camembert starter was excellent. My wife had never had John Dory before so tried that but she wont be trying it again Cooking was fine but there really is nothing on a John Dory! All head and bone. I had the Christmas Pie which was OK but wouldn't have it again. My Chocolate Tart desert was excellent but my wife's Creme Brule was pretty average..not set firm enough and very thin caramelized topping. Ice cream on both deserts was excellent.

Great location, upstairs reserved for party of 20, super mince tarts, great service, staff very helpful. We will be back.

Booked for an early Xmas dinner with visiting famiy Can not speak highly enough of the meal and service, The turkey was cooked to perfection and the scallops for a starter were superb. Excellent,excellent,excellent.

The food was great and the view across the estuary to Appledore was lovely. Simon, our server, was very attentive and helpful and also made sure our two dogs were well looked after following our beach walk

Absolutely incredible roast at the Boathouse this evening. The turkey was to die for (according to my children) & the pork belly was mouthwatering. They definitely did not skimp on the portion size either! Staff were all so lovely too! Compliments to the chef, a very happy and full stomach ready for a nap! Will definitely be returning

We went on Sunday and had two of the catches of the day - both well cooked and presented. The service was friendly and could have been a little more efficient....We only got our cutlery and napkins after the food had been brought to the table. However, the place has a good atmosphere and we enjoyed our evening. We'd go again the next time we visit.

The boathouse is situated in a fabulous location in Instow with beautiful views across Instow beach to Appledore, with boats bobbing about on the water and people walking the beach. A great location for a sunset view too. The boathouse menu doesn’t often change unfortunately and is pretty standard fare which if you’re a regular becomes a bit repetitive. The food is good though, although not outstanding that you’d shout about it, just average and a tad on the high side price wise ….but you are paying for the location. Unfortunately there had been a change of management and some new staff when we visited this time and timings were a little awry. Not just us other tables around us too. But the waitress was very apologetic of the situation and you couldn’t fault the service she gave and was clearly trying to make up for it. We will be back as it’s within walking distance and the location is fab. I hope staffing is all resolved soon and maybe some new items added to the menu in between the staple ones to change it up a little.

Amazing Beechview. Great food and drink. We had muscles and crab flatbread and white wine spritzer and side of roasted beetroot salad. Dogs made to feel very welcome. Can’t fault it.

We came for a roast and it was lovely. The portions were perfect and the side dishes were genuinely sized and perfect for sharing. Highly recommend. Staff were very attentive and made sure we were comfortable and satisfied throughout.

Great late Sunday lunch. One of our favourite places to come when we visit North Devon. Staff always really friendly and the food is delicious.

The booking on line was quick and efficient. We had a warm welcome to this lovely restaurant right on the beach front. We took our dog and the staff made a fuss of her , Making us feel relaxed and comfortable. The food was delicious- especially the fresh fish - lemon sole. There was plenty of choice and the service was excellent!

We have visited the Boathouse many times but despite its fabulous location it always disappoints. Our booked table was not available when we arrived. Over an hours wait for food, unhappy looking staff and very poor service, tiny portion of French Fries with my main course. Quite expensive limited menu. Could be fantastic but it never is.... Adequate just!

Very enjoyable evening with excellent food and service from the staff. We were a family of 4 and all of our meals were very good from steaks to lobsters. Definitely will return on our next visit to the area

We come on holiday every year and always as a treat make sure we book in a nice meal at this place as it has fantastic views on the terrace. The food was nice nothing to complain of. Staff weren’t very chatty and had to ask for a few things twice. At the end of what is a very expensive meal for 6 meal with wine and drinks we asked for the bill. We were told a tip of 12.5 % had been added to our bill as we were a table of 6 ( two were children). The waitress explained we could have it taken off if we didn’t want to pay it. When we said please could it be taken off we were told yes but can I ask why. Shocked by being questioned we asked why and was told well we have to ask its feedback. Feeling very awkward we explained it was a lot on top of what is an expensive meal anyway and she just said ok and grumpily went off to change it. We felt like we had been accused of being cheap and so embarrassed by the whole experience.

We met up with friends and wanted them to see the views of the estuary and appledore. The lady that served us was very attentive. The food was good and what we wanted. Really enjoyed it.

Delicious meal with nice welcome and good service. Pleasant ambience. Helpful staff. One of us had mussels and the other had crab linguine. Just yummy. Always a favourite place for us by the sea to eat.

This was a birthday celebration so we booked a table for 6.30pm through the website and were informed that we could only have the table until 8pm. We arrive promptly on a Monday evening to a near empty restaurant and we’re shown to our table. At 7pm I had to do to the staff who were talking at the bar to ask if they could take our order! When we finished our main course and plates were taken we were then left until eventually one of the staff came and asked if we wanted any more drinks, we were not offer a desert menu. We had intended to finish with cocktails but couldn’t be bothered to wait for them to saunter back to the bar and make them at their convenience so we paid and went instead to the Instow Arms next door. Okay food, bit overpriced, shocking service, such a shame because it could be a lovely place to go. POOR MANAGEMENT

This is a special place. Right on the beach front at Instow. Relaxed vibe with great views, great service and excellent food. We went on a miserable wet, windy day and emerged three hours later totally buzzing! That’s how a long lunch should be. We ordered 4 starters of Maldon Oysters, Whitebait and Crab, Scallops and Atlantic Prawns to share. Brilliant quality.

Amazing food, loved the Moules Mariniere and the restaurant is in a beautiful setting with lovely views. The only disappointment is the service is slow and every time we wanted something we had to get up and find somebody to ask. Nobody checks in to see if you want more drinks. The staff are very friendly but for some reason, despite the restaurant being very quiet, we just couldn't get any attention. A real shame as otherwise this would be a complete 5 star rating.

Very good in every respect. Varied and tasty menu, cheerful ambience good selection of drinks and efficient staff. Our favourite!

Wonderful meal! Nothing at all to complain about. Scallops (starter) and homity pie (main course) were particularly delicious. Blackcurrant trifle very fresh and tangy. Altogether one of the best meals we’ve had in the UK. Hope to return soon!

Overall - go elsewhere. Very inviting place, nicely done. Was chilly which we raised, no-one responded to this. Accompaniments to the main were very small (mean I'd say), which we raised and didn't get a response (we were polite), nor any gesture on the bill. Fish was delicious and a decent size. Children's meal was smaller than usual (none left for dad!). Service was variable, from friendly to cool. There's better alternatives in town, that are cheaper, just as tasty, and more generous portions.

We ate early 6pm as we are 4 adults a 6 year old and a toddler. Unfortunately the toddler had a meltdown - my daughter removed him but rather than us all have to leave they staff were super helpful, offering distractions and toys. They were very patient and understanding. The food was good to excellent. Oysters delicious and pasta perfect. The burger was also delicious. Only 4 rather than 5 as a rating because it was very expensive particularly wines. Husbands portion (venison sausages) was small.
