Always a good choice, you never wait more than 5-7 minutes to get served at the bar. Food is good and plenty of beers on tap. Was a bit disappointed that the 'lamb chops' special consisted of one singular lamb chop for £25 but it still tasted great. Would have made a lovely starter. The ambiance is chilled and make sure you book a table outdoors if the weather is good and you want to be outside 👍.

Our experience was extremely disappointing. To begin with, there was an error in the billing for one of our meals and drinks. Furthermore, we were dismayed to overhear Kelly, a member of the staff, engaging in gossip about our table. Additionally, when I inquired about the vegan status of the Tofu sandwich, Mitch responded in a condescending and sarcastic manner, stating, "Obviously, PB stands for plant-based, so yes, it's vegan." The demeanour of both Kelly and Mitch was consistently rude. I would strongly advise against visiting this establishment.

Great little pub by the canel! Dog friendly and great atmosphere. Staff at the bar need a little more friendly service, felt as if I just wanted to order and get out to my table as soon as possible. May of been a bad day for that person so I still will return!

Very dog friendly pub which made decent coffee from an espresso machine... The staff, clearly dog lovers themselves, couldn't resist giving our two dogs some well-deserved treats and ear scratches, instantly putting them at ease. We settled into a comfortable spot near a window, enjoying the views of the Grand Union Canal, which we had just been walking along. While it was still a bit early for lunch, we had a look at the menu, which had a decent number of tasty looking meals and snacks. The combination of friendly service, decent coffee, and the canal backdrop made this pub a perfect pit stop for both us and our dogs. Clean and tidy toilets too.

Very poor food. Clueless service Cheap kind of fried food. Would not go again and definitely not recommending for food.

Beautiful looking pub and not overly expensive food. £6 a pint of Cruzcampo but it was very nice and ice cold.

Beautiful pub with lovely helpful and friendly staff, reasonably priced but the cherry on top was the nappy station. As a group that had young children this was a small detail that really made our time here fantastic. I'd highly recommend it for a casual drink or dinner.

Very nice canal side pub in Berkhampstead, with lots of outside space to take in the canal boats chugging by, although we visited on the coldest day so choise to eat inside where it was warm and cosy. Food was nice if a tad pricey, although the drinks weren't too expensive. Would go again.

This is our go to pub in berkhamsted. As it's a fullers pub you can be guaranteed good service and nice atmosphere.

27/10/23: Hemel Hempstead Weekend: visiting friends John & Hazel for the weekend, myself Lynette & Bryan enjoyed a lovely relaxed pint here. We'd travelled to Berkhamsted for the afternoon. The weather was cold and crisp outside but the pub was warm and welcoming. Good service, good selection of craft ale.

tables are sticky and untidy. i dont trust the hygiene rate here

Just stopped for a drink, no food was ordered. Was very quiet in there for a Thursday but the weather could have had a bearing on it. Nice place to go.

Went here with some friends on a friday night. Very lively and a great atmosphere.

A great pub right by the canal in Berkhamsted which is very dog friendly and has plenty of outdoor seating to cater for that need. Had a great chicken burger and would certainly come back again.

Had a lovely lunch just sitting by the canal the food was superb and the service was great as well. I had a lovely BLT in a ciabatta with triple cooked chips, the wife had brie in a ciabatta and chips. All done to perfection.

Parking terrible. Very limited choice of food, particularly for vegetarians.

Popped in for an ESB or two. What’s more to like??? Nice terrace overlooking the canal, good stop off if on a walk or just somewhere to have a civilised 5 minutes to yourself.

Good menu options, bit low on vegan offers. Service was prompt, food tasty and well presented. Very dog friendly and great location right next to canal.

My haddock sandwich on chapata was nice. Maybe a bit oily. My partners cheese on white was tasteless. No butter and dry bread and mild cheese. Riverside lovely. Bar girl could smile!

Sandwiches, cheesy chips and drinks all good! However we were disappointed that we were not informed about the mid week promotion and got overcharged as such! my daughter noticed a sign advertising the deal after we had paid and told the bar staff who refunded the difference! Had she not have seen the sign we would have been charged too much!

Second visit. Such an amazing canal-side setting. Very chilled environment with excellent food and wonderful staff.

Very enjoyable sharing platter, Greek style with a variety of dips, sun dried tomatoes, olives, plenty of pitta bread. Ample for two ladies. Lovely attentive service.

Very nice pub, with beautiful area outside with a view on canal I bit expensive but sometimes I suppose you can treat yourself, we liked everything, friendly atmosphere and barmen who served us was excellent They have got nice outdoors heaters, dogs friendly, if nice day it always packed which is always a good sign. I highly recommend the Boat, It takes a lot to impress me, it’s obviously well managed, the staff are friendly and helpful and attentive the food was fantastic and the attention to detail. It was very clean very reasonable prices. Also has a lovely view of the boats going passed, I went for lunch, but I will return for dinner at some point. Thank you to the Boat for such a memorable experience keep up the great work.

Beautiful location and atmosphere. There is also a seating area behind the parking which is really beautiful and will shield us from the rain. The location is perfect really! :) Saw lot of people chatting away and playing board games. Dogs are welcome!

Awesome pub, great outside space, cannot be faulted....

Had a wonderful meal with friends this weekend just gone. We shared nachos to start and then I had the burger which was delicious. Finished with coffees and then a walk around the pub and little streets. The staff are very friendly and attentive and the food arrived in very good time. The only thing to mention is that the kitchen closes at 8.30pm so don’t forget to get your desert order in before then. Highly recommended.

Great location, good staff but fish and chips for £18 would hopefully have not had mushy fish, half-crispy batter and oven-type chips. Minted hard peas are no substitute for traditional mushy peas, but all this is personal preference. Hopefully, I was just unlucky.

A nice place to go and have an lunch time meal by berkhamsted port,Staff really nice and helpful, food very good and plenty full, brought to your table good and hot !! The one drawback is there is not a lot of parking and only one disabled bay ! Not there Fault just the way ! A small yard ! Part from that a good place with good staff and a good chef !! Had to drop a star for the parking sorry !!

Walked here mostly along the canal from Aldbury. Found the Boat rather disappointing. Beers all good (Fullers) and location on the canal great. But the food was uninspiring and expensive for what it was. We have been here before but it’s gone downhill I think.

Food rubbish. Must have run out of the dishes we ordered but they managed to scrape something on a plate. Was not impressed at all. I Would rather they told me to choose some other dish than to present us with a substandard meal. Very poor standards. Will not eat there again. It was a joke.

Visited for the first time for Sunday lunch with family. We didn’t know that you have to order at the bar which makes it a nightmare when you are a big table with kids. Twice we had to order more stuff which meant one of us had to go back and stay in the queue for ages to order the extras which meant their food went cold. Not a good system at all. Then half of the table got their food and the other half waited another half an hour and watched the rest eat their food. It turned into a very stressful Sunday lunch so never doing that again!!. It’s a lovely location but we will only come back for drinks as food order is too much hassle. The Bruschetta for starter was just awful - the worst and most tasteless pointless bruschetta I’ve ever had. What a waste of money. But the fish and chips and the roast dinner and steak meals were all good. Kids garlic bread was good too. The coconut icecream was lovely.

Cool place, with seats outside overlooking the river. You can watch boats come through the lock. Food was nice and service was fast. There's parking too which is handy. For the seats outside they had blankets available and over head heaters in case it's really cold out. Would come here again, we had a nice time.

This is a beautiful pub, right on the canal. The food is excellent with a fabulous menu to choose from. Staff are very friendly and professional. As we had our dog with us, they could not have been more accomodating. Water and treats were given. We had a wonderful time with no hesitation in recommending this beautiful venue. We look forward to returning soon. Continued success with all that you do.

Amazing pub with a beautiful terrace/garden that looks out onto the canal. They serve delicious roasts - the pork crackling was crispy and light! A massive shoutout to the sticky toffee pudding which was extremely tasty, which was served a scoop of salted caramel ice cream which balanced the sweetness of the pudding!

We have been to the Boat for lunch 5 times it is on a lovely party of the canal near two locks. It is a very pleasant place to eat particularly in good weather where you can eat outside watching barges go by. The staff are very pleasant and efficient. A nice place for a pub lunch.

Pleasant staff and nice setting. However we were overcharged on the wine which is expensive anyway. I did query this to be told it was the correct price but it was different to that on the web site. We also ordered a hot smoked salmon salad but it wasn’t hot and I don’t think it was actually smoked. No one came to check how our meal was and the salad was perfectly edible so saw no reason to make too much of a fuss. Don’t think we will be returning however - I realise that costs have gone up recently but £13.30 for a large glass of Sauvignon blanc is extortionate

Great places to visit and does what a pub should do and that is to serve well kept beer. The staff were extremely helpful and friendly. 4 of us came for lunch. Real burgers were great but I'm afraid the fake one did not meet expectations. Why do you have to season the chips? Can't we decide how high to raise our own blood pressure? Finally 2 Eton messes cream over whipped and only half a strawberry and a very small piece of meringue. I will be back.

We went with our enchanting grandson Charlie (seven months), his parents and our Labrador. We were all made to feel welcome from the moment we arrived. The food was great too - we all had different mains. The roast beef in particular was excellent - lots of perfectly cooked lean meat plus al dente vegetables. A small slip up with the delivery of the meals was quickly and apologetically corrected. All this plus an excellent canal side location on a day of glorious sunshine. What more could you ask for? Thanks to all the friendly and cheerful staff.

Don’t usually review but the service was so bad I had to. Came here for a quick bite. Ordered 2 starters but they got the order wrong. As they had already made the the food they asked if we wanted it anyway and they would bring the correct food out. Over an hour later they still hadn’t and we went back up twice to enquire. Eventually we were fed up and asked for a refund which they refused and only offered to bring the right order out if we waited some more. Ridiculously poor service and will not be returning. Only went here as the rising sun pub was busy, now I know why

Absolutely loved this pub . The staff are so helpful and willing to that extra mile . The food was delicious and well presented . The triple cooked chips were the best I have tasted 😋 . Inside the pub is warm and friendly . The walk.along the canal was so peaceful . We will most definitely visit this pud again . Superb .

Fantastic roast , chicken perfectly cooked , home made Yorkshire, stuffing seasoned with thyme, gravy also made from real stock , veg perfectly cooked . I’m very fussy Highly recommend

We eat out for Sunday lunches regularly. Random pubs, random places in Herts. The Boat has surpassed them all. The food was unbelievable. I would have been happy to get that in a Michelin starred venue. The service was fast, and friendly too. I feel like going back and re-reviewing my older reviews now that this has set a new standard. Catalin - the chef - is an artist. No I don't know anyone there before anyone thinks I am doing someone a favour. This place is exceptional. Go, enjoy, and have an amazing meal. (dog friendly too, with a calm canal location).

Great afternoon at the Boat watching the 6 nations. Good food and beer. Very well looked after by an excellent team.

I'd give it 4.5 stars if I could (4 doesn't seem entirely fair) as they'd run out of my first choice of lunch (I can't remember what it was but we were quite late sitting down) but the welcome was warm and effusive and everyone enjoyed their meals (chicken pie, fish and chips and a salt beef sandwich). Good value for the area as well.

Lovely roast with a group of friends and thier baby. Quite last minute plans, but the team at The Boat made us feel welcomed, valued and genuinely came across happy we had chosen The Boat. Would advise calling to book on a Sunday. Good food, well looked after beer, friendly staff. Thumbs up.

Great Service and Lunch on a Monday!

We have been to the Boat a few times now for a Sunday Roast and every time the service and the food (especially the roast beef) has been wonderful. Definitely our favourite place to visit and would definitely recommend! We would also like to mention Matt who is always so friendly, welcoming and helpful when we visit!

We went to The Boat on Friday for our Christmas party. At Only £20 we didn’t expect much of the buffet. How wrong we were! Amazing food (especially the mini steak pies), attentive service and great atmosphere. Highly recommend this gem of a pub.

Nice outside area and beautiful pub located next to the bridge on the canal. Fantastic in summer and cosy in winter. I always find this pub a little weird when it comes to atmosphere. Sometimes it’s great and sometimes it feels really flat. The food is inconsistent and make sure you look up when the kitchen is open. A nice place for afternoon and evening drinks.

This restaurant has a lovely location, next to the canal which you can walk along. The staff were welcoming, friendly and completely in control of every situation. The meals came at the same time delivered with a friendly smile. Food was presented to perfection and tasty. There were 7 of us and not one complaint. Would highly recommend this place and look forward to returning. Many thanks for making our difficult day remembering a loved one, a comfortable one.
