We ate here before the Lion King with the VIP Ambassador Lounge deal and it was all very good . I had read some of the negative reviews and was a bit wary after booking but it was a really nice experience. The food was fine , we had chicken skewers and soup and burgers and there was no complaints , but the service was excellent . The girls who served us were efficient and very friendly. They took us up to the lounge and again we had friendly service . All made for a great night , well done

Came here before lion king on someone else's suggestion. Everything seemed very average. Nothing exciting at all. Think wetherspoons but triple the price. I had a burger it was ok but the food is not fresh or home cooked it's ping! Kids had pizza (I was expecting great things) but it was just a microwave pizza. Also it's £3.50 For a diet Pepsi which is utterly ridiculous. There was also no vinegar which disappoints me also. Would give less stars but staff were great, very friendly.

Pre theatre venue reasonably priced but it’s only a bargain if enjoyable! In our party , starters : halloumi was fine but not much of it, chicken skewers forgettable. Mains: burgers looked fine like typical pub grub, the fish pie was pretty heavy and bland, bit of spot the seafood scraps going on.... next time I would say just stick to burgers as these are hard to get too wrong. Cocktails are basic, not particularly offensive but for the price could be better. Desserts- couldn’t comment as didn’t have opportunity to order as service too slow between other courses.

This restaurant is part of the Playhouse which makes it the ideal choice for a pre theatre meal. You need to show your show tickets as the restaurant has direct access to the theatre once you have finished your meal. We really enjoyed the experience. Excellent staff, well turned out in black with read accessories, the men looked particularly smart with their red ties. The food was good value for money. We had the three course set menu, which had plenty of choices. We opted for the burgers, they were lovely quality beef and served with sweet potato fries all nicely presented on a wooden board. Good value for money and I loved that we then just walked straight into the theatre, no queuing to get in which was a great bonus on a January evening.

We were attending a show at the Playhouse theatre and read about "The Boards" on the theatre website. After reading Trip Advisor comments- we decided to book as we invariably spend hours wandering round looking for somewhere to eat and then end up being late for the show.As we were actually in the theatre building - we knew this couldn't happen! We booked for 6pm knowing this would give us plenty of time.On arrival we were surprised to discover we were the only people eating there that night (having said that, the theatre was only half full) The staff couldn't have been more pleasant and we were happy with the meal.We opted for the current offer which was 2 main meals and a bottle of wine for £25 and then just paid extra for starters and desserts. Ok - there isn't a huge choice and it's not cordon bleu cooking or silver service, but we thoroughly enjoyed our meal and for for £41 for 2 x 3 course meals and a bottle of wine- really good value. The bonus was that after reading trip advisor we knew that the remainder of the wine could be saved for the interval. We were too full to eat the desserts anyway- so at the interval we returned to our table and waiting for us was our dessert , the (chilled) bottle of wine and 2 clean glasses. Whether they will do this if they are busy I don't know- but we thought that was a fantastic and novel idea! We will certainly eat there again next time we visit the theatre.

The start to a perfect evening begins with a trip to ‘The Boards’. Greeted with an enthusiastic smile by a young lady on the door outside. We were very unsure what to do or how to proceed with the VIP ambassador booking we had for the show and pre show dinner. The young lady was very knowledgeable and after she warmly welcomed us, she was happy to fully explain what to expect once inside. We made our way upstairs to the restaurant area and immediately were shown to a nice but rickety and wobbly table for two complete with a tea light candle burning away. The setting was very nice, warm colours with ambient lighting including a stage scaffolding light set up which was really nice and helped set the scene. Our lovely waitress presented us with our Shrek themed menu’s and once we showed our tickets to her, she promised that, after our dinner we could relax in the Ambassador Lounge until curtain up and also advised we could have dessert sent to the lounge during the interval. Too often you go to eat out and find a set menu with over-rated fancy fare which doesn’t meet expectations and leaves a foul taste in your mouth when presented with the bill. No chance of that here. The menu was very simple and uncomplicated which we were very grateful for. It’s not very often we have a night out without the kids but we do like to make the most of it when the opportunity arises. Starters: I had the Broccoli and Stilton Soup, absolutely wonderful and a ample bowlful. Shellie, my wife had the Baked Camembert which she tells me was very good size portion and done perfectly.Main: We both opted for burgers. I had the Princess Fiona burger (Chicken) and Shellie had the Shrek burger (Aberdeen Angus Beef). We tried a taste of each other’s burger and we were VERY impressed. A burger is a simple thing to cook and offer up on a menu so it has to be absolutely perfect in every way to gain any credit. These burgers deserve the utmost respect and highest credit. Cooked to sheer perfection, they were succulent and tender with just the right balance of flavour. Accompanied by a nice salad and fries and for mine sweet potato fries which were a first for me. All done to perfection yet again. Service was well balanced and drinks were quickly provided when ordered. Our waitress kept her earlier promise and personally escorted us to the Ambassador Lounge where we met our lounge hostess Alex. We enjoyed our drinks in the lounge and were introduced to others who had also opted for the VIP package. We sat and enjoyed drinks and nibbles and a friendly chat before curtain up for the first part of the show. During the interval we returned to the Ambassador Lounge and our Champagne and our desserts were awaiting us. My wife enjoyed a very nice, good sized portion of delicious cheesecake where I just had to have the Jelly (Big kid at heart). I can honestly recommend the Boards to anyone looking for a simple yet satisfactory and perfectly cooked meal before seeing a show at the Edinburgh Playhouse. There are plenty of other worthy places close by but at £13.50 for 2 courses or £16.50 for 3 courses, you will find it very hard to beat the Boards. Very clean and friendly place to eat. Great atmosphere and staff who are very knowledgeable. Would we visit again? Can’t wait to visit again on 2nd January when we go to see Priscilla for which we have already booked our table, tickets and lounge passes.2 x Meals (3 Courses)2 x Pints Lager1 x Double Vodka & Tin Irn Bru2 x Vodka with Blackcurrant & LemonadeTotal Bill £60.50Not including Ambassador Lounge Entry or Shrek Tickets

The show itself was ok, theatre was not full, so lacking in atmosphere. However, my review concerns the afternoon tea we had beforehand. It was my friends 60th birthday and it was my treat to have afternoon tea and show. Afternoon tea very disappointing did not live up,to,the description on website at all. There were 4 of us, we got one large pot of tea, with one teabag in it, yes one teabag! The sandwiches were hardly filled with anything, we got asked what we wanted each and we each got our own tiered plate. However, the scones were so small and we got pots of jam each that one could have served us all. There was no atmosphere in the place only one other table occupied, which doesn't surprise me now, as if anybody had been before they wouldn't go again, So disappointing. The only thing is the girl serving us was lovely, but there certainly was no theme to the whole thing. I definitely won't be going again and I am probably going to write to the management. Didn't make a fuss on the day as we were out to enjoy ourselves, but I felt let down on behalf of my friend. At £60 for the tea for the four is us it was not worth it.

There was a limited choice and only one vegetarian option but we knew this already after looking on the website menu. The vegetarian dish was absolutely lovely, filling and possibly one of the best I have ever had! The complimentary bread on the table was delicious and my boyfriend really enjoyed the ravioli. The desserts were also really good and our waitress was very attentive. This is the perfect example of not just going on what others write in reviews as it is about personal taste and you won't know unless you try it for yourself. This place is awful! And I mean the food, the service, the atmosphere - all absolutely dire! Do not venture into this 'eatery'! We ordered Red Pepper and Tomato soup - what came was a plate of what was tinned tomatoes in some kind of juice - followed by a cheese and onion panini - heated I am sure in a microwave as the bread very quickly turned cold and hard! When the almost full bowls of soup were taken away the waitress did not even enquire as to why it was being left and similar with the panini! The cost of this (with two very small and very expensive glasses of wine) was £33.50!!! An absolute disgrace! More people should know that if done with a smile and good laugh - anything is possible.OK we all make mistakes but its how you deal with it that counts-and if dealt with a smile it makes your/their experience easier/better.Table deco was lovely-fresh bread-water all waiting. The food was pallatable-service was good (if dizzy). I can genuinely say they mean well.

We booked a table here for 6pm as show we were waiting to see started at 7.30pm. The table was decorated nicely and near the window so had great views. We had the pre theatre menu 2 courses for £12.95. The mackerel pate starter was good and I chose a vegetarian main of mushroom with artichoke and asparagus in a white sauce enclosed in pastry. This was served with a side salad of "rocket". The main was very tasty. The portions were just enough. Wouldn't be if you were starving. Large bottle of water on the table included in price. Service was very good as bar area next to us was busy but we. didn't have to wait long for anything. Waitress also asked if we wanted a program or to order drinks for the interval. As this restaurant was already in the theatre it took us only 5 minutes to get to our seat and we avoided all the crowds. Would definitely do this again.

Was there before Lion King , was impressed by location and layout , menu very limited and small portions not very well presented , staff were first class and efficient bu the price of there wine was a bit of a rip of I do not mind paying for good wine but I would say they were over the top others drinks were not bad , do not think I would be back.

We went for an evening meal at 6pm prior to a concert in the Playhouse at 7.30pm. So it definitely is convenient and means you can relax over your meal & drinks, knowing you have direct access into the theatre itself. However, food menu was limited, and although attractively presented, it would be difficult to rate this above an average. Overall, convenient if you are going to the theatre, but if you are not, then I am sure there are better places to eat, with wider menu choices and tastier food.

My friend and I came here prior to see a show in the Playhouse. The website made the place look quite nice, inviting and vibrant. Quite a different story in reality.A big hall, sparsely decorated, no atmosphere and expensive drinks. The list of cocktails was extensive and plenty to choose from but our 2 cocktails arrived in tall tumblers, just like I'd poured a can of juice into them with a stackful of ice for good measure. They tasted fine however but zero marks for presentation. The only good thing is the toilets are quiet unlike the rest of the playhouse and the backstairs gets you quickly to your seat without having to go outside again. There's far better places to try in Edinburgh. I won't be rushing back.

I struggled whether our visit to the Boards restaurant warranted a poor and it just slipped by with an average, but "fair" would be more appropriate. The restaurant itself was non-descript and I struggled to see where they spent money on the refurb. Service was mediocre (and they were not very busy as we were there for lunch). The menu okay but the food was very boring and plain. It didn't taste horrible, but it didn't taste great for sure!More annoyingly (and not sure if this goes to the management of the Playhouse itself or Boards if they're not the same) - we were there to see Dirty Dancing and the toilets stopped running/flushing. I advised the staff and they just shrugged it off that it happens all the time when there is a lot of use... surely they expected a lot of use of ladies' room when showing Dirty Dancing??? Very disappointing. The theatre itself was beautiful.

We arrived at 5.50pm and were seated quickly, the waitress asked if we wanted drinks and we ordered a bottle of rośe. All was going good we thought, the starters arrived and were very nice. As soon as we were finished the starter our main was put in front of us. My pasta was so bland even putting quite a bit of salt on it didn't give it any flavour . The starter and main were given with-in 20 minuets. We felt very rushed so when the waitress came to take our dessert order we said can we have about 15 minutes please, 30 min later I got her attention to place our order. It took another 15 minutes for them to arrive ( both were very disappointing ). The food was poor to average, expensive considering we were eating in a bar, poor lighting and generally disappointing. Do yourself a favour and go to Giulianos across the road it's much better

This was our first visit and after looking at the website we were really looking forward to it. We were welcomed at the door and asked if we had booked and our name ticked off on a list. We were directed up two flights of stairs and told to let the bar person know we'd arrived, which we did and he asked our name and then told us to speak to the waitress who was on her own attending to a number of tables. We were kept standing for at least 3 minutes before the waitress had time to ask our name and then take us to our table. Having to get through 3 people before being seated is a bit excessive! We were given menus but the lighting was really poor and we had real problems trying to read them. We we mentioned this to the waitress she agreed and said she had to stand under a light to be able to read them. She did say I've already told them they need to get the lighting sorted out in here. The place was also really cold and I had to speak to two different people before the heating was turned on. After 30 minutes is was still cold and again I had to asked for it to be turned up, eating a meal with my coat on (I wasn't the only person in the bar to keep my coat on) is not good. I did let the staff know that they really need to have the place heated before cutomers arrive. The food was actually good, no complaints there. The prices were a bit on the high side for was is essentially a bar meal. The price of the drinks is excessive. When I went up to the bar to pay my bill I had to wait until the staff had finished their chat before I was given attention, only to be told that they don't accept Clydesdale Bank cards, they don't work on their machine! Never come across that one before. All in all not one of the best dining out experiences I've had, it's a shame for the kitchen staff as they appear to be the one part of the business that have got their act together, but they are not getting the backing of the front of house staff.
