Milnes Bar in Edinburgh, City of

We popped into The Milnes Bar to use the loo and asked if we could fill up our water bottles. The staff were incredibly accommodating and happy to help, which we really appreciated. It’s always nice to come across a place that’s welcoming, even for a quick stop. Thank you!

Keg lineup is pretty poor and expensive (but hey, that's Rose Street). Could do with at least 1 more lager option. Nice to have some cask on. Service top notch. Requested a specific football match on a Monday night, they had it on and even had commentary on, without having to ask - very rare in my experience of requesting football! All bar staff were friendly which makes the world of difference. For a Monday night it was relatively buzzing.

Great place to have a nice drink. There are plenty of options. Service was great, very attentive. Stayed for food, fully enjoyed the fish, and chips. Was an enjoyable couple of hours with friends.

Definitely an Edinburgh institution. Always worth a visit even when the rugby is not on, but the football was good! The food is straightforward and tasty and very well priced. Atmosphere is great with couples, groups and sports fans all having a good time.

On St Andrews day its warm for time of the year so we sat outside on the terras

I was being interviewed for a major newspaper snd loved telling the reporter the history of The Little Kremlin. The ambience was quiet and the service was superb.

Service was quick even when very busy, tables were clean. Place was warm. Only slight annoyance would be not being able to order on the app.

We enjoyed a relaxing time for a couple of drinks before attending a gig in Edinburgh. We enjoyed the atmosphere there and the staff were very friendly and courteous. If in Edinburgh again, we would visit this bar.

Good price on the wine but service at bar was slow. Bar staff taking long food orders then disappearing to fix issues. Went for a meal and back at 9:30pm to drink and told downstairs was shut. Has to sit at dirty table. Asked staff to clean it and they left it soaking wet.

They don’t serve regular black tea or coffee or any hot non alcoholic drinks. Unusual. Atmosphere is OK.

Nice place for local beer and cider. We recommend the traditional fish and chips.

This place is an absolutely MUST. Had the pulled duck and it was to die for. The bartender kindly recommended me an ale that paired perfectly with my meal. I will definitely be back and would recommend this place to anyone near and far.

He visitado Milnes unas cuantas veces cuando estuve en Edimburgo y nunca he podido encontrar un fallo, pero el sábado realmente se fueron más allá. El pub estaba absolutamente lleno en ambos pisos cuando llegamos, pero el gerente hizo todo lo posible para encontrarnos una pequeña mesa para bebidas y comida y el muchacho y la muchacha detrás de la barra de abajo no podría haber sido más agradable a pesar de ser apresurado de sus pies. Pedimos pescado con patatas fritas y un pastel de carne y nos informaron que sería una espera de 40 minutos, pero la comida llegó en media hora y era muy bueno. Y a pesar de estar tan ocupado, el gerente todavía encontró tiempo para tener una charla con nosotros y me convenció de cambiar de Guinness a Belhaven Black. ¡Es bastante bueno por cierto! Solo demuestra que incluso los pubs de grandes cadenas pueden hacer una gran experiencia personal si emplean a las personas adecuadas y aquellos en Milnes realmente se preocupan y se enorgullecen de lo que hacen.

Quería escribir esta reseña debido al servicio al cliente absolutamente increíble que recibimos hoy. Mi hija y yo estuvimos en Edimburgo visitando las jornadas de puertas abiertas de la Universidad. Anteriormente habíamos comido en Milnes Bar durante una visita de fin de semana, así que reservamos una mesa para una comida antes de nuestro tren de regreso. Soy discapacitado, y estaba realmente luchando caminando así que llamamos temprano para ver si podíamos sentarnos. Era absolutamente doloroso, pero la dirección se inclinó hacia atrás para ayudarnos a encontrar un lugar para sentarnos y luego nos sirvió en nuestra mesa para permitirme descansar mis rodillas gammy - algo que generalmente no se ofrece. Me sentí tan bien cuidado y como si realmente se preocuparan por mí. La comida era absolutamente increíble y a pesar de que se precipitaron de sus pies no esperamos mucho en absoluto. Muchas gracias por todo lo que hiciste para hacerme el día un poco más fácil. Estamos regresando a Edimburgo en diciembre y sin duda volveremos.

An original pub, burgers and haggis fritters were delicious.

One of the best meals I ate while on vacation. The service was attentive. We received our promptly. The decore was nice. I ordered the steak and ale pie. The crust was flakey and lots of beautiful layers, just divine, the beef was so tender and flavourful. The gravey was smooth and silky. Magic happens when you take a fork full of steak pie, mashed potatoes and gravy from this establishment. Highly recommend if your reading this to decide where to eat. you will be be disappointed if you give the Steak and Ale pie a try.

Great pub for lunch. Ordered special and other food from the menu as well as beer and drinks. All was excellent. Staff was great and cheers to Jamie for making it so. We appreciate all the attention. Eat outside or inside or downstairs, it's all good.

Very expensive pint of lager & regular diet coke £11

Had lunch today. 3/4 of our meals were delicious. The chicken ciabatta is what let this review down. Very dry and tough chicken. Not much of it and barely any mayonnaise. Cheese toasties were absolutely delicious as were the duck croquettes. Staff were lovely and value for money was good. Would definitely visit again.

Lovely pub. The server had no knowledge of the beers. When asked, he said that he didn't drink, which is fair enough. We wanted to eat but it was a 50 minute wait for food so we left.

A pub on Rose Street. Gets pretty busy but they have a big seating capacity including an underground level.

This bar is on Rose street in Edinburgh. Looks like a small pub with street seating too. Head inside and its a rabbit warren of nooks and crannies with plenty of seating.

Absolutely lovely pub on rose st. Nice, spacious and really friendly staff. Good collection of standards, ales and spirits. Always worth a visit if you are in the Old Town. Highly recommended.

Great pub in a good location for a few pints and some food (not too quiet nor too busy). Excellent staff - warm, friendly, and attentive. I like the macaroni cheese as a side and the coffees are good too - plus the coffee is cheaper than many places nearby. £2 pints of Coors at the moment as well so can’t go wrong!

Everything I'd hope for in a pub.

Hadn't been here in at least 20 years as I have long since moved away from Edinburgh. A Greene King pub through its Belhaven ownership. The cask selection was therefore limited. However they really look after their beer. I admire good cellarship and that was certainly the case here. The barman was an absolute gentleman and engaged really well with me and my daughter. The food was also tip top. Good portions, decent grub and excellent sauces, particularly with the shrimp starter. Won't leave it 20 years next time as I'm a frequent visitor to Edinburgh.

Terrible food just absolutely terrible I was there with family and we ordered reveille boar what we got was 2 almost completely black sausages with mached potatoes in an utterly discussing gravy

This is a shitty chain - the bar man is “not allowed” to let you taste the wine prior to ordering a glass.. I paid £17 for 2 glasses of Picpoul de Pinet that taste more like a cheap Chardonnay.. maybe that’s why they don’t let you taste first..

Found the place by accident and called in for a quick pint out of the rain. The food looked great, although we had just eaten, so didn't get the chance to try for ourselves. Special shout out to barmaid Suzy, who was flying around looking after everyone and never stopped smiling and chatting to the customers. Will be back next time we're in Auld Reekie. Thanks Suzy 😘

Called in without a booking but found a table quickly. Menu was varied plus a specials board. Were told there could be a 35min wait but food came pretty quickly. All food tasty and portions adequate. Staff very good and friendly. A very good visit.

Really tasty food but a bit expensive for a size of meal you get. Has a terrace and it is really big inside.

I think that bartender (older guy with glasses) was either drunk or have some mental problems. I have asked for " white russian" cocktail, he got visibly upset and refused to serve me at all. Without explanation.Not a normal behaviour🤔

Unsavory basement room Unfriendly staff who don't want to work! Menus given at 7:45 p.m. After 20 minutes of waiting, we go to the bar to ask to be served, only to be told that the kitchen closes at 8:00 p.m.!

Don't know what has happened but used to be 5 star from me. Tonight one bar person downstairs who was trying to serve the food and customers drink. Not enough staff. Food is still good as was the beer.

I am an easygoing guy. I love pubs, and never imagined I would even consider writing a negative review of a pub. This place was the worst. Our table ordered a round of drinks. Bartender/manager was kind of rude, but within the range of acceptable behavior. As we ordered the second round, we also tried to order burgers. Kitchen was still open for another hour. Bartender/manager told us there was a 90 minute backup on the food. We said we were okay with waiting. Bartender/manager said no, because the kitchen would close before our food would come up. A full hour before the kitchen was scheduled to close! It’s not just the frustration of not getting served. The guy was positively gleeful to inform us that we wouldn’t get served — like he had made some inspired move to beat me at chess. You don’t want my business, fine. But don’t be a smug jerk about it. There are a ton of great pubs within a couple of blocks of this one. Go somewhere else.

We saw the many good reviews and decided to give Milnes Bar a go. We were not disappointed. Great food for all of us (steak and ale, fish and chips and fish cakes) and a super friendly waiter (Adam or Sir Waiteralot 😂) who had some fun moments with our son. Loved it!

We had just arrived in Edinburgh and were looking for a traditional Scottish fare. A sandwich board outside of Milnes Bar proclaimed they were serving Haggis Fritters as a daily special. Intrigued, we stopped for lunch. The Fritters as a starter, Fish & Chips and Steak & Ale Pie (in puff pastry) with buttered mash, an IPA and a Thistley Cross cider. Everything was very good, but the Haggis Fritters were AMAZING! Two generous portions of haggis were battered and deep fried, then served with a spicy whiskey sauce and a rocket salad on the side. The haggis was seasoned to perfection and almost creamy in texture, while the crust was light and crispy. The entrees were tasty and satisfying, but I would come back to Edinburgh just for the fritters.

A large pub with one entrance on the street and the other in the basement. The atmosphere is friendly, the service pleasant and the daily menu with revisited haggis and beef pie filled the stomachs! The beers are good too.

We were walking around Edinburgh and stumbled across this authentic pub for lunch. I was with 4 people and we all loved the food, atmosphere and ale! I tried their pea and mint soup for the first time and it was so delicious and was served with a generous portion of crusty bread. Lovely lunch!

Used to go here in the 70's after work on Princes street. The publican was Harry from Ian Rankines rebus novels. My sister knw harry then and is his partner now. In the 70's it was the 'Poets' bar, Hugh Mcdiarmid, Norrie Mccaig, Archie Fisher and other men o words (and Royal High english teachers 'hinged oot') Us Royal High Pupils often had the benefit of Nortie and Archie Harry later took over the Oxford Bar where Ian rankine and his protagonist frequented and still do. the question about when i went is redundant, it was the 1970s! Milnes is nothing like it used to be, it is a lot better!!!

Very happy with this discovery: Hearty and good meal, very friendly service and atmosphere + traditional setting of a Pub. A stone's throw from the Airlink 100 bus stop, shuttle to the airport --> very practical.

The food was outstanding a lovely place to eat and drink . The barman matty was so warm and friendly and so welcoming . Would recommend to anyone to visit one of the nicest meals we've had in Edinburgh. Carol and Bob x

We stepped in at noon for a short break and stayed longer than we expected to! The pea & mint soup is very delicious, the garlic bread was okay. The prices and quality of cocktails are quite good. The bartender was very friendly and gave us a good and detailed advice about our choice of whisky, since we didn’t have a clue about that in general. I don’t have a reference but I think 14£ for two small whisky’s isn’t that cheap.
