Stopped for lunch here with the family. The fish and chips my wife had was amazing, the kids meal was good too, although we never received the ice cream we paid for. I ordered a burger and to my big disappointment it was 2 beef patties in a mediocre bun, nothing else in it, no sauce, no cheese no onion let alone some tomatoes or pickle or salad. The best part of the meal was the chips on the side. One of the worst burgers I ever had. Luckily the service, the view and generally the atmosphere made up for it.

Volveremos.

When your writing your bucket list of places to eat....put this little gem on it. This small modest restaurant at the foothill of Portland island is a real find. Very sad to say the owner and head chef Luciano is moving on, so be quick or you might miss it!The menu is limited but this means you won't have to sit for hours debating which dish you won't be disappointed in as they were all delicious. My husband and I opted for the 3 dishes for £12 as a starter.....eggs Benedict, smoked mackerel and cuttle fish. We went on to indulge in the scollops main and mixed seafood chowder. At regular intervals Luciano came to our table to make sure we were enjoying our meal. Now where do you get service like that these days? He is totally committed to customer satisfaction and that is a true rarity these days making the whole experience a day to remember.

From start to finish the service was first class, attentive, with great attention to detail. My starter was a chorizo and potato dish, fantastic! For my main I choose the 72hr braised ox cheek, sublime, one of the finest cuts of meat ever to enter my mouth. All washed down with a boussac, a wine that was the perfect accompaniment for my cheeky little number. Our table of 6 was a happy table, fed a watered to perfection. The atmosphere at this restaurant also matching the food experience. I highly recommend you try this establishment.

We visited the restaurant last Friday week for a joint birthday party. We arrived and were shown to our table then a long wait till the waitress came and took our drinks order, although not a difficult order it took three attempts to get it right. The staff then had to be reminded to produce the birthday balloons, which were ordered about two weeks before, when the reservation was made on line, and confirmed by telephone. After another long wait our order was taken. When the food arrived it was superb, with one of our party requesting a non standard meal which he said was very good and the offer of a pasta meal for our Grandson, which was great.

After the third repeat of an old Beatles album and a side of Bob Dylan we felt that we were in a time warp. We had promised ourselves a decent fish dinner while we were in Portland. This came with some reliable recommendations. Unfortunately we were disappointed. The starter 3 small scallops on a shapely mush of pea puree.. My wild salmon proved to be the small tail end piece. The tastes did not really add up and I felt that some of the garnish came out of a jar. I should have complained at the time but we did have a nice waitress and I wimped out.I think they do some themed evenings and they may be fun.

I simply don't understand the negative reviews The Blue Fish has received on Tripadvisor. We were a large party who visited at the weekend for a birthday celebration, and the staff were accommodating & friendly, and the food was simply divine. Everyone agreed that their meal was gorgeous, and there was plenty of "Wow - try this" around the table. I can only assume that the negative reviewers have limited experience of quality cuisine and were expecting some sort of fish and chip cafe. Some people have commented that it is expensive; I wouldn't say it was cheap, but I wouldn't begrudge a penny for such a delightful meal and splendid service. We were all delighted with the whole dining experience and I would heartily recommend.

My wife and I joined a group of 18 friends for a 40th birthday celebration. We paid a £10 deposit per person and all submitted our menu choice to the blue fish 7 days in advance. The setting is very nice within the restaurant, with fairy lights on the ceiling which gives a cosy and magical feel to the place. The waitress told us it was her first shift and was very jolly, friendly and helpful, we could not fault her in any way. My wife and I had a main and desert each missing out the starter, plus a bottle of house white wine. The bill for our meals came to £58, which was reasonable. We were provided with a bread roll and a basic dipping oil and basmatic vinegar whilst waiting for the starters to be brought out. The starters arrived with those who ordered them after one hour. However, we waited two hours for our main to come out, which to be honest was too long. The restaurant was fairly busy but not rammed, and to wait this long was unacceptable. The 70 hour cooked beef arrived at last, it was very nice but Luke warm and served with 5 slices of carrot and a small amount of mash with a sauce. Yes it tasted very nice, but I'm sorry it wasn't worth the wait. The deserts came out another hour on, and although I had ordered a cheese board, was again disappointed with the small portions. The tables were not cleared for at least half an hour after we had finished eating between courses. When I went to pay for our meals, I was told that parties of 8 were expected to pay a 10% extra service charge. I made comment that I was not happy to pay this and was not charged for it, although it was an awkward moment whilst I willed the card machine to hurry up! The couple we were sat next to agreed that the dining experience was not a great one. We won't be going back, but if they sort their timings out and were somewhat more attentive to clearing tables and getting the food out a bit quicker, you could have a lovely evening here.

This restaurant is just a delight and a surprise. The food is fab, the decor quirky, the staff attentive and friendly. What more do you need to hear. The best bit is definitely the food and the house wine very drinkable. I visited with a group of friends whilst on a weekend break on Portland. We booked breakfast there based on on-line reviews. I was very disappointed with the traditional breakfast I received. One slice of bacon, one half size sausage, a fried egg, one medium sized mushroom, half a small grilled tomato, a few baked beans, a small hash brown and a slice of toast costing £7.25 plus a pot of scented tea at £1.75. A much larger breakfast is available a couple of miles away at Wetherspoon's Weymouth for £3.09 with tea at 99p. My recommendation? Better go to Wetherspoon's! Sorry Blue Fish but you must do better than this, it's a very competitive market. Once bitten twice shy! We did not return.

Sorry to buck the trend of other who have put a review on line, but my experience of this restaurant was absolutly shocking. Besides offering quite a limited choice of over priced food. The whole experience was dreadfull. The place itself resembles a shack and the seating inside, with loose fitting boards placed over a complete mis-match of tables did certainaly not create a great dining experience. The staff 'just about served you', with finished plates left for at least five minutes after everyone had eaten. The food itself was predomately 'swimming' in oil and would be one of the last places left on earth I would want to eat at.

We have eaten here a number of times and always been impressed with the food and the interesting flavoursome dishes available. Much of the seafood is sourced from the fish suppliers practically next door to the restaurant. The style of the Blue Fish is unique and looks magical in the winter with fairy lights adorning the ceiling and bouncing light off the window panes. Plenty of outside seating to enjoy the sunshine in the summer. It is a family-run restaurant with friendly service. Children are well catered for with their own menu options to appeal to kids, using fresh and healthy ingredients to please the parents! This week, we tried the mid-week Mussel Night. I last visited this restaurant in August 2009 and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. And I was happy to write a glowing review on here and recommended it to my friends. So it is with sadness I have to report that my visit last Saturday night was far from satisfactory. My party of 4 had a reservation for 8.30pm and we turned up on the dot and were seated immediately. Then followed a wait of 15-20 minutes before we were offered menus along with apologies for the delay. The restaurant was busy but not full...but we were in no particular rush so were unconcerned. However, two of out starters were served without some of the ingredients - in my own case no serrano with my asparagus. A second bottle of wine I found to be frozen only after I had poured a couple of glasses from it. When I complained the waitress made a comment to the effect that I must have noticed before pouring, which I genuinely didn't. My partners home made ice cream with her dessert was a melted mush. At that point I decided to have a conversation with the woman at the front desk, and she promptly asked the chef/proprieter to speak to me. I told him about all the points above and also told him that I thought that the service did not do justice to the food which remains very good. To be fair he listened to me and apologised, agreeing that serving the frozen wine as unacceptable, and explaining that the dessert could not have been served quickly enough, hence the melted ice cream. He brought a fresh helping to our table, which was appreciated, but it was diappointing to be served something so obviously sub standard in the first place.I didn't receive an itemised bill at the end of the meal, but I was told that they did not charge for two of the starters, the frozen wine and the spoiled dessert, and the final sum seemed to reflect that.I think that was fair all things considered, and credit to the restaurant for that. The lady on the front desk apologised again and admitted that the restaurant '' had had an off night ''. I agreed and made the observation that things go wrong and mistakes get made in all walks of life - at that point - it happens. I also told her and the chef/owner that I would be happy to return in future. However, when I got outside the restaurant, my partner and my daughter - who had left while I was waiting for the bill - told me that both the woman on the fromt desk and one of the waitresses had been extremely rude to them as they left. That is totally unacceptable, and of course there is no question of me ever returning.I take no pleasure in submitting this review because I had such a good time there before, and the food really is of a high standard. But when you charging up to £12 for a starter and £19 for a main and £7.50 for desserts, then it is reasonable to expect a far better level of service than we received...and as for the rudeness to my family, completely unwarrented and inexcusable.I hope the owners learn from my experience, I know that they are better than this.

A lovely evening meal on Friday. Menu eclectic as usual; we had a fish curry ( excellent, full of flavour, an exotic taste of the sea) and the rose veal 72 hour braised brisket ( melt in the mouth, comfort food at its best!) . Desserts were tasty and well made. Atmosphere is welcoming and buzzy; staff helpful and polite. We love it here, Breakfasts are also a real treat too. Youngest daughter loves the burger nights. You won't find better at these reasonable prices anywhere nearby!

Mixed review: A warm and friendly welcome, clean and tidy. Day one: breakfast was lovely, all appeared freshly cooked so it took a little longer, the food was nice and of great value. Feel like there was a whole can of beans for the 'beans on toast' and it was piping hot. The pot of tea was plentiful The 'coffee' milkshake was more like warm milk, not the best. Day two: ordered the thick shake this time - meant to be with ice cream and so thought that would make it cooler and tastier - wrong, it was the same as the previous visit with cream and sprinkles - not the best (if you want a nice thick iced coffee, visit the White Stones cafe). The food took a bit longer again as it was Sunday and busy. The mushroom on toast was cold but we were on a time crunch, so we couldn't send it back. The taste was nice, just cold and the black pudding was a bit on the rubbery side. Everyone else enjoyed theirs.

We stopped by Portland as tourists from the USA. We got a scone, slice of cake, and two coffees, and they were some of the best we’ve had in Europe! The staff were friendly and helpful too.

A great experience once again. 5th time at The Avenue and it never fails to deliver first class food and service. The students are a credit to the college. Their enthusiasm and attention to detail make the experience a real pleasure. We thoughally enjoyed the lunch and experience as usual and can't wait to return in the very near future.
