I highly recommend this take away , the food and service quality was truly exceptional.

I was really impressed by the service and food as well fresh cook.

When they first started up, service was not very good. BUT over time they have improved 10 fold. So service and food excellent.

Placed our order online, nice easy process, got to the shop and they straight away got it ready. Shop was very busy, which is always a good sign. Lovely tasty food, friendly staff and clean shop

My wife just gone up to get fish and chips and when got back was awful,I could pick the large chips up as one clump ,re heated definitely and like cardboard,fish was terrible...by most the worst fish and chips I've had ... avoid

£4.10 for a “large” portion of chips. Hardly any chips in a cardboard box. Dry and sorry looking chips. What’s wrong with paper wrappings? Why so few chips given the high cost?

Used to order online - but let down twice in a row. No longer use these. It's a shame as they used to be so good and looked after their customers. Sadly this is no longer the case. Very disappointing. Skippers has made this place even worse. I relented and tried to order from them again last night - order placed for a 6pm collection. Food not ready - waited more than 30-minutes at the shop. Staff need training and a system needs to be put in place to cook food and have it ready for collection instead of waiting for customers who have already paid to arrive and then wait for their food to be got ready. The food is good the service is simply awful.

(When it was the Dolphin)Lovely food however I will not be returning, after ordering online and a 30 minute round trip once again got home to find items missing from my order this is the 4th time in roughly my last 8 to10 visits. Previously I have not bothered going back on 2 occasions however when you order fish and chips and you dont get any fish I had to drive back. When I explained the staff acted like I was making it up but gave me the 2 items I was missing and said I have put fresh chips in there as well for you, which I would have expected as the chips I origanal got where now nearly an hour old. During this time not once did anyone offer an apology for messing up my order and causing me to drive back and forth for an hour.

If you need your fish and chips gluten free, from Monday to Thursday, this is the place. Just had THE BEST GF haddock and chips. Batter on fish really light and crispy, all freshly cooked, and more GF chips than you could shake a stick at!!! Lovely guys and young girl running the show. Will definitely be back. Real post parent's evening treat 👍

Dont order from them between them and just eat they cant get there act together they take the order then cancel the order 10 mins later then when you go back on the website they tell customers there not taking anymore orders . Your be waiting for your fish and chip that dont exist !! Twice this has happened.

I haven't been to the blue dolphin for 2 years or more as I had a run of 3 visits and after returning hone to eat there was something missed from the order, I gave it another go this week and was served by the young lads who were more interested in their mates that called in for chips, we got our order in good time drove 20 minutes home and guess what, a portion of chips were missing from the order, my wife rang to tell them, only to be told to come back for the chips but she explained its a 40 minute round trip and the rest of the meal would be ruined the young lad laughed at over the phone and said oh well we'll give you some chips next time you come in. Don't think I'll bother again as the food we did get wasn't that good anyway

Avoid- not what it used to be. Came here yesterday for food for a family of four. Two children's meals, two medium cod and a large chips. Initial experience seems good as you get to place your order quickly and get given a number so you can move out of the way. That said, I wasn't asked whether I wanted salt and vinegar and then wasn't ask when my order was being made up and subsequently left without salt and vinegar on my chips. The kids meals (one was chicken nuggets and one was cod bites) were fine and the kids likes them. The drinks are no longer fruit shoots like with the previous management but a budget fruit cup. Again the kids liked so not too worried. The two portions of codes were wrapped together. Neither were particularly crisps but when trying to separate them to plate them up, you could not help but remove the batter from one as they were stuck together. The chips were pretty could, nothing like what you'd expect in a fish and chip shop. All in all the food for adults I thought was diabolical- the worst fish and chips in Newbury and both the worst fish and chips and worst takeaway I have had for some considerable time. Serving was four teenagers. One polite articular lad largely taking orders and processing payments. Then three other teenagers sorting orders. None of these people had a hair net. One girl stood around largely staring in to space, and a young blonde lad seemed to have an itchy scalp, and then go and sort your chips. Massive improvement needed. If you want a fish and chips I'd recommend the one opposite the king Charles tavern down in town, but not this place.

The service and food quality has dramatically dropped since the shop changed hands. The award winning service and food is no longer there with dry chips, long waits and very little to no organisation or leadership.

What on earth has happened. This place used to be the best chip shop in Newbury. NEVER AGAIN. 8pm and you can’t order anything other than what’s cooked off even though they are “open” until 9pm. Apparently fryers are turned off and too busy cleaning. The staff member laughed in my face when I said you don’t close for 45mins. Young girl, hair down, jewellery on. No hair nets on anyone. Food wasn’t even warm, let alone hot. Clearly just cooked off and left to sit there. Pretty sure there is a danger zone with hot holding and their food falls well below it. Only customer in there and they still got the order completely wrong. Waste of money and will definitely NOT be returning. AVOID at all times!

Some of the chips were hard. My curry sauce was missing, even though I asked if it was in there. Have tried phoning them but of course , no answer.

Apart from marks fish & chip van up towards Hermitage. The dolphin is the best in newbury for us. We try to go once a week and have always enjoyed their food.

I'm new to Newbury, and BD has cemented itself as a staple for my family and I. Old school excellence served well, what more can you ask for. big portions, properly cooked, salted and vinegared (on request), with add-ons in waiting, I can't commend the food enough. Young staffers, are pointed and professional, perhaps could be a bit more chatty, but nonetheless, the best fish and chipper around.

The service was so bad it got funny. None of the 4 servers had hair nets, the one who served me didn't give me a number and when I asked if I should have one 5 minutes later she had no clue that she had just served me or what I wanted, the till broke and when someone asked if they could order food, one of the servers literally waved it in the air and said no, the till is f**king broken, one girl went to get a drink from the chiller which I assumed was for a customers order but then she stood there and drank it, another one spent 5 minutes playing with her hair, and the list of things went on and on. The food, not surprisingly was pretty poor when we got it home, although we were surprised to see that we actually had the food we asked for. Surfice to say, we are not going back. Never seen service like it in my life.

Ordered on the shop's website, which was straightforward. The food was ready at the requested time and was hot and tasty.

Good portions fish tasty, chips cooked correctly sift on the inside and not to crispy on the out side. Need to serve onion vinegar to give food a little more flavour. All in all not a to bad Chippy

Great fish and chips ,probably the best in Newbury,well it was !!!! went in tonight (Friday 14th) and 4 young people behind counter who seemed to be happier laughing and joking than serving customers. Ordered Med chips ,fish cake and 2 un battered sausages, got home chips soggy and 2 battered sausages which we tried but terrible that's why we like un battered..sorry but gone down hill

Arrived just before 8:30pm for chips, fish cake, battered sausage and curry sauce. It looked like it was closing and the food was in the warmer. However, the curry sauce was nearly finished so only one was available. The guy at the back suddenly decided he could get two pots out of what was left. And I had to pay the £1.80 cost. When we got home we discovered the curry sauce pots were only two thirds full, the chips were luke warm as was the fish cake and sausage! I do hope we don’t get an upset stomach from this purchase. Very disappointing, won’t be returning.

A good fish and chip shop, chips were lovely, battered sausage was a little hard, think it had been sat around for a while but pea fritter was very tasty if a tad on the small side. Would definitely visit again.

Disappointing. Burger had bo relish or salad just a plain bun with the burger. Some items were wrong, no choice of drinks, only coke. No salt and vinegar on the chips and the sausage had bone in it.

Always used this chip shop. But I don’t know if they have been taken over but tonight’s meal was a disaster. The chips were over cooked, cod bites were a piece of fish cut into three, the gravy was so thick you could stand a spoon in it and the staff were so very slow but they had time to check in on social media while my food was getting cold on the top. Not going back again.

Asked for vegi burger and I get a patty between 2 buns no sauce no salad. Feels like someone needs to learn how to make burgers. Wish I could rate them under 1 stars.

SWEARING INFRONT OF CUSTOMERS, when another customer said to them "not very professional swearing in front of customers" was replied with a giggling smirking "oh sorry" from the member of staff. Luke warm food and wasn't asked whether I would like salt and vinegar on my food either. Very disappointed, won't be using again.

This chip shop has gone down hill. Previous owners had a lovely chip shop, gorgeous food and decent portions. Now it's the total opposite, tried it twice but not nice at all. Fish thin and tasteless, chips soggy, nothing nice about this place anymore.

Called into the blue dolphin yesterday. Apart from the cost of £3.10 for medium sized portion of chips. There were no trays available so what little vinegar thay put on was soaked up by the paper and if you wanted sauce it was 30p per sachet. We found the chips to be extremely dry. Frankly the worst quality we have come across. Would not recommend this chipshop at all.

It seems to be under new management. Service was polite but it seem expensive at £19 for two cod, one portion of chips and a couple of portions of mushy peas. I could forgive that however it had been nice. Unfortunately what was always a good takeaway meal from here is now awful. Our cod was think and overcooked and not fresh - at a guess it was from frozen. The chips were stale and not fresh. Sadly we won’t be coming back.

Perfect F&C! Brilliant service from the team!

I have not used The Blue Dolphin for some time, so Friday 30th Sep 2022 I thought I would go back. I ordered Haddock and medium chips on-line, arrived at collection time and the order was just being finished, so all good so far. However, when I got home I was very disappointed with what I had paid for. The Haddock whilst tasty, was really much smaller than my local chippy (this one slightly more expensive), the batter was not light and crispy as I have remembered it being in the past, but I can only describe as soggy. The chip portion of medium was a great deal smaller than the small portion I usually order from my local chippy and cost more. The chips were not well cooked, and again, not as I remember them being in the past, when they had a crispier finish yet light and fluffy inside. I was very disappointed with the quality and quantity I had paid for. I am afraid The Blue Dolphin cannot say that, that is the largest haddock they can get, when my local chippy is nearly twice the size, and cooked well. The chip portion size is down to the server. I had hoped to use The Blue Dolphin more, but this experience has clearly shown that the standards I remember have dropped, so will not be going back any time soon. However, I alway like to give a food provider a chance to recover a poor situation, and some point later this year might give them a second chance, but not for some months.

1st time customer thought I would visit upon reading brilliant reviews only to find really small portions especially when I ordered large chips food not being done in order something tells me those were paid reviews cause I certainly will not be ordering from there again

One of the better chippies in Newbury.

Fantastic fish and chip shop. Food is always cooked well and good quality and staff are friendly and helpful. They have an online ordering system so you can pre-order and pay when you arrive to collect your order or just order and pay at the counter as usual. The parking around the area is horrible (no fault of the businesses on site) but there are plenty of side streets for a quick stop whilst you pick up chippies.

Called in Friday night after dropping in Basingstoke . What fantastic portion of Fish and chips tasty fish great batter well cooked crisp chips . Large fish chosen (also medium and small fish ) it cost £8.60 but with a couple of slices of bread for a chip butties it would feed 2. Very clean friendly staff with quite a varied menu if you are passing please call in you will not be disappointed

Good sized portions of senior's fish and chips.

After our first experience which was hot, fresh and a generous portion. We were happy to order again. Well, what a disappointment, cold, very small full of grease cod. Really not nice, to the point the dogs had most of it. Still hungry😡😡😡
