The pub looks very tired and run down on both the inside and outside, which is a shame as it’s set in quite a pretty village. It is crying out for some TLC. The staff were friendly but the food was average. I won’t be returning.

I've never seen a toadstool growing out of a bedroom wall before. Upon arrival there were a couple of young men who were really helpful and welcoming and they made us look forward to our stay. Dinner was good and nice dining area. The bedroom however was not good. The handle came off the door, the shower was a trickle. It looked liked lining paper on walls. The bedlinen seemed clean though. It could've been such a nice experience but it needs some love and pride putting into it. I can understand a bit of damp in such an old building but the toadstool felt as though nobody had been in there in a long time.

We booked a day ahead for dinner at this popular pub which we would recommend. Lovely historic pub with low beams, ( some of which apparently dates back to 14th century). Really friendly bar and restaurant area. Great food great service. I had the pie of the day,(steak and ale was pie of the day today), chips peas and gravy and my husband had the rump steak fajita which was great. We each had lager to wash it down which went down a treat on one of the hottest days of the year so far. They apparently have rooms available here which would be a great option for accommodation in the area. Only 8 miles from Oakham showground ( for Global Birdfair), and handy for other sightseeing in the area. There were some outside tables for drinks as well as a spacious and cool dining room.

Sadly the Blue Cow was below expectations. The twin room we booked was a long rather narrow room, so the beds were end-on-end and was situated on the front of the house. The road outside is far from a country lane, as it is direct access to the nearby A1 and gets quite busy from 6 am onwards. Our evening meal seemed to comprise of the previous days leftovers. The locally brewed beer was tip top. The big plus is there is a charging point in the carpark for electric cars.

I stayed at this Inn last summer and was really made to feel welcome and at home. The room was so cosy and clean, with everything you need in it. Nothing was too much trouble for the friendly couple that manage the Inn. Good choice of food, good portion sizes and absolutely delicious food. I'd definitely stay again and highly recommend it.

Have used this inn on occasion as living in the surrounding area so had no concerns when attending a funeral reception there for a dear friend, oh! So disappointed in the spread, brown bread sandwiches tasted stale, white sandwiches were hard and curdling on top, a plate of a sort of cold battered chicken? things?.a plate of cold spring rolls? and 2 plates of cocktail sausage rolls some overcooked and the others undercooked most were used to stoke the open fire when none of the staff were watching, surely management would have been aware of the situation by the amount of food left by the end of the night, certainly won't be having my reception here although I won't be present would not inflict this my friends and family.

Really disappointed that the Blue Cow would not waiver a cancellation despite giving 5 days notice.I called the Blue Cow Inn to advise I was having to cancel a booking with 3 days notice and was told by the owner that it's not their call, it would be down to the booking agent. So, I contacted the booking agent who advised it's the discretion of the Blue Cow Inn and would leave me on hold whilst they contacted them directly. Apparently, the property owner/Blue Cow Inn advised they are entitled to the full cancellation costs and would take what their entitled to despite given 5 days notice.

We embarked on a trip to Scotland for a family wedding and due to other things, didn't leave home until late in the afternoon. By about 7.30 the kids were complaining about being hungry. We saw a sign for The Blue Cow Inn and thought, why not?We pulled into the car park and at first our hearts sank; the garden was full of what looked like rowdy children. When we entered, we discovered it was the local schools leavers do, and actually they were quite well behaved! We were seated and orders taken within minutes, and they even did their very best to cater for our Gluten-Free son. Our hosts were amazing, the food was brilliant and the kids were happy! They were even prepared to let us sleep in our campervan in their car park overnight (in hindsight, we should have!), but due to the timescale, we chose to drive on as far as we could before we had to sleep. The restaurant area was very clean, very well kept, and tidy. The staff were attentive and friendly, and did their best to accommodate us at such short notice. We are planning another trip to Scotland in a few weeks, and I think we will definitely be giving the sunday Carvery at the BCI a try!

Was staying at the Travel lodge up the road, was told to go to this pub as it was the closest pub to the travel lodge.Walked there (wouldn’t advise), when we arrived the pub wasn’t busy, I had a candy Kane gin which was nice. We ordered food and was informed there would be a bit of a wait, the food was good and came quite quickly! Meal for two came to around £35.The taxi cost £20 back to Travel lodge (5 min if less drive) so take own vehicle as there isn’t many taxis around.

I have just had the most amazing cottage pie with vegetables! The plentiful braised steak just melted in your mouth. The beef gravy was so tasty over the vast amount of vegetables. My friend had 8oz rump steak which melted in your mouth, accompanied with onion rings, tomato, mushrooms chips and peas for £11.95. The landlord was so attentive and although it wasn't overly busy, the atmosphere was very relaxed. Nothing was too much trouble and pet friendly too.

We used to use Travelodge and Little Chef at South Witham but wanted a dinner and not just coffee or a diner across the busy A1. We followed the sign from the A1 northbound to the Blue Cow Inn and a roaring fire and friendly welcome from the locals in the bar greeted us. The restaurant is also signed from the southbound carriageway and just a short way into the village. The menu offers good value meals that were generous and delicious. Generous portions and lovely hot food. The staff are very friendly and made time to stop and chat. Different beers and two A4 pages on the menu of different gins offered. We will use this for dinner whenever staying at the Travelodge and will also consider staying at the Blue Cow Inn as it is so close to the A1

... heading north, we were looking for a light lunch but didn’t fancy the usual service area. Just as we entered Lincolnshire we saw brown tourist signs to The Blue Cow. It was only 1km from the A1 and worth the short detour. Very quiet for a lunchtime; we received a friendly welcome and delicious sandwiches were prepared freshly for us. The decor is tired but the ambience is definitely an improvement on the usual A road services.

My wife and I travel a lot between London and Yorkshire and always travel on the A1. The Little Chef that we used before is now a Global Coffee shop, which I hate. So on our last trip we followed the sign for The Blue Cow Inn and arrived at a super little pub with new owners. It was lunchtime so we had lunch, which was very nice indeed and excellent value for money. They did not have any real ale and the manager explained that they had recently taken over and were not quite ready yet for the real ale, hopefully on our next trip.

We booked a Groupon voucher for two steak meals and a bottle of wine at this pub. On arrival we were greeted warmly by the owner, who also cooked our food as the chef was not in that day. Finally called into the Blue Cow last week. Been passing the place for years and not had the chance to get inside. The Blue Cow is located in the middle of South Witham village and is a lovely old building, retaining many of it's original features and quirks. There is a large car park to the rear. The Blue Cow also has a brewery on site - I didn't try any of the ales as I was driving unfortunately - and I would imagine this would be a real opportunity to draw more customers in (not sure if they do brewery tours?).

Must get lots of business from signs on the motorway. It is a few miles drive away but you get there eventually. A really refreshing contrast to motorway services. A cozy old pub with an open wood fire that would have been absolutely great if it had not been hogged by a group of senior ladies. The fish & chips was obligingly substituted for fish & salad (with mushy peas) for my calorie conscious companion. I went for the “pie” which was tasty enough but I just have problem with describing a lid of separately baked flaky pastry that is deposited on top of a stew as a “pie”. Either offer pie or stew but not this insult to the concept of a “pie”. The cafe latte was provided on the house. A very decent and much appreciated gesture after the first one was prepared with milk that had gone off. The food is OK. The reason why I see the place as very good is the uniqueness & the general ambiance.

Dog friendly pub, not too far away from where we live, so decided to try it. We were in the bar which has a lot of character, beamed ceilings, and a lovely roaring fire, with a settee in front of it. There is also a pool table, and a game machine, but that didn't bother me...I liked the busyness of it, and the locals were very smiling and welcoming. We felt as if we had been going there for years...so thanks to any locals who read this. From the family with babies, playing pool (the family not the babies) to the older locals having a chat around the table near the fire. Service was friendly, the carvery was excellent and reasonably priced, we both had pork which was tender, and a good selection of veg and potatoes, and gravy, which was all top notch. We enjoyed it all, and we shall visit again. It is informal in the bar, provided you don't mind that, go for it with your dogs. If you don't have dogs, the restaurant seemed very pleasant.

Our first visit just for cake and coffee - the ambience is nice and the coffee is ok, but there was no acknowledgement from staff, service was slow and definitely wasn’t “with a smile”, and the toasted tea cake was so toasted that it was hard and crisp throughout. Oh dear. Was it a case of being understaffed, although it wasn’t particularly busy at the time, or was it lack of training . . we’ll never know.
