Recently attended the Private Ski Chalet and I'm truly dissapointed about the place. The chalet has no doors at all! It has 6 small heaters and only 4 worked. We were a big group of 24 people and we had to keep our coats and jackets all night! In winter this place is like being outdoors! Unless you go in a ski suit :) The food was ok, I'd give it 3.5/5 stars; however the drinks that were included were awful (apart from the beer), mulled cider was cider with hot water and mulled wine was hot water and a sachet!! I do not recommend this. ---- In reply to owner's response: nowhere in their website it's advertised that the Alpine chalet is outdoor hybrid space

We called in during a recent visit to the town, mainly because it has been voted pub of the year so thought I'd try it out. Walked in to first door and it was so small and couldn't get a table so decided to leave. That's when I saw the area to the rear. They have erected a timber shaley type building, and decked it out like a ski shaley, with log fire, animal skin lap-blankets and lots of decor. The real deal! Could have stayed there all night 🌙

From the moment we stepped into the apres ski lodge we were greeted with an incredible warm welcome, great conversation and recommendations from the team there. Warm, welcoming and sociable atmosphere and really well decorated space for the winter season. Will be back!

What a great place. A building steeped in history, food that was exquisite! I can highly recommend the pork Cheeks with celariac mash and kale, you won't be disappointed. The staff were all very friendly and all round was a great atmosphere. Outside is a lovely covered seating area with rugs to warm your peach on all the benches, heaters and blankets available. We stayed at the William Cecil and was recommended to try the Bull and Swan as the hotels 'sister pub', a chalk board outside modestley claimed that it was the best pub in England. If this is so please save me from the worst. The place looks about 10 years overdue for a redec although the staff were pleasant and hard working. I nearly fell over when I was charged £ 17 .75 for a pint of IPA and a glass of a very average Chardonnay villages. Two points to make .1 To the manager , Are you aware that Dick Turpin was hung for robbing on that scale . 2 You will never see my coin again. Awful.

We stayed at the Bull & Swan for a night as part of a longer trip. This is a fascinating historic building that's well worth a stop in its own right. We stayed in the 'Lyon' room which is definitely 'different' with a roll-top bath in the room! The food was excellent - particularly the game pie. Not the cheapest place but you get what you pay for. Worth checking out the midweek deals on their website.

The food was absolutely dire. Zero flavour, zero seasoning. Starter was soggy, main was nothing like it was described on the menu. Chicken was rock hard. We waited 35 minutes for somebody to come over to sort the bill. When we told them the food was pretty bad the waitress replied “well that’s nothing to do with me” it’s a nice enough pub for drinks but do not spend money eating there.

Excellent! The food was superb. Loved the trio of snacks as a starter - roasted cauliflower, chicken wings and prawns, Bull Burger was well presented and tasty. In our party we also had the artichoke and scotch egg (cooked to perfection) starters. And the lamb shoulder, fish and chips and schnitzel. All were very well cooked and presented. In addition, the staff were excellent, friendly and attentive. It was a pleasure to eat there and we will certainly go again!

Hello Paul. We have not long left you,at the Bull and swan. We are not generally inclined to leave reviews only when things are exceptionally good or exceptionally bad. I'm afraid in your case it is the latter. We found the room we booked with you (wild horse) initially pleasantly decorated and comfortable, but alas as we investigated the bathroom one of the basins was badly cracked and damaged and in the toilet, a large area of wallpaper was detached and a loose tile rocked as you stood on it. In the bedroom the window over the road, was quite rotten and disintegrating causing the stay to become detached .At £174 per night, along with the incessant traffic noise, we think this is unacceptable! We booked a meal for 7-30pm on sat evening rather last minute and that was much appreciated. However whilst waiting for our food I could not help noticing the accumulation of dirt around the outside seating area.I saw dead leaves in abundance ,a tissue, and a cig butt. Bindweed was growing over a lot of your plant beds and the painted shelves were all very grubby. All of the above are basic maintenance issues ,but you are not addressing them. When our meals arrived, my wife's fish and chips was not even hot. My blue stake was only just rare, and was heavily salted and sliced!!! The salad I ordered arrived late swimming in dressing .We were not prepared to risk a sweet. I have read all of your recent reviews and the bad ones are all of the same tone , so please do not reply, saying you are sorry, because as l have already said somebody in management is not taking responsibility!!!!!!! Our first stay at the Bull and Swan as we normally stay at the partner establishment The William Cecil but they had a couple of weddings last weekend. On the up side: The room was large & very pleasant with lots of good facilities, quiet and comfortable, the staff were lovely, very polite and helpful and the breakfast was very nice indeed. The bar and garden areas were also very pleasant and the evening meal was very good. On the down side: On arrival the cookie jar in our room had one half eaten cookie in it, this was taken to the bar but was not replaced in the room (with fresh cookies) until the last day, the towels weren’t changed in 3 nights and there is no suitable facility to dry them resulting in damp towels by night 3. The breakfast was ample and nice but ad-hock as to what you got in the basket each morning, sometimes missing butter, milk, juice etc which had to be requested. At the end of the stay at check-out they had no record of the full sum pre-payment we had made two months beforehand, luckily I was able to prove the payment on my phone. Small niggles that didn’t really spoil the weekend in a very nice place to stay.

We stayed in the Stag room at this hotel very recently and as soon as we walked in we noticed a smell. By the first morning the strong smell of 'bad eggs' was quite nauseating and I realised that it was due to Hydrogen Sulphide (sewer gas). This is what the experts say: "If you detect a rotten eggs smell in your home, it is likely that you are in the presence of hydrogen sulphide (H₂S). H₂S comes from sewage treatment plants, sewerage systems and wastewater treatment plants. Also known as sewer gas, it is extremely toxic to humans.Exposure to lower concentrations can cause eye irritation, a sore throat and cough, shortness of breath and fluid in the lungs.” This is not great if, like me, you are an asthmatic. I complained on the first morning of the smell but "the message didn't get through to the Manager". When I complained the next day I was told that the maintenace man would sort it (which they did) BUT I would be paid compensation. They knocked £26 off my three night stay (they require full payment when booking in). So no, I do NOT recommend this establishment and I hope my asthma settles down again soon.

Pleasant pub on the main thoroughfare of Stamford. The best feature of this place, other than the rather lovely building itself, are the open and the covered spaces to the rear that are glorious in good weather. A secondary bar serving the outdoor area is helpful. Rather limited beer and cider tap options, and a solid - but not overtly brilliant - Sunday roast - was ok.

Very pleasant staff. We just had drinks and a main meal with friends whilst staying in Stamford. Our 2 friends had pork schnitzel which was very tough with a few new potatoes with a bit of greenery. I had 2 patties in a brioche bun with what was supposed to be a lot of other fillings too. When it came up it was a thin looking burger which tasted very average and a pot of fries. The wife had two cauliflower tacos/wraps. Each taco/wrap was tiny with a couple of tiny cauliflower florets with a spicy flavouring and crispy bits. Not crispy enough to be a taco and just too cooked to fold up properly. Grease poured out when picked up. Gone in a few mouthfuls. Plus a pot of fries. More like a starter. The men had a pint each one of which was quite right. I know my beer and have never left half a pint before. The ladies had a Prosecco and a spritzer and one glass of wine between them. They had the cheek to add a 12 1/2% service charge. It cost £120! There were a lot of empty tables!

So disappointing - had gathered with friends & family for a casual meal and catch up, it was an effort not to let the poor service, food and ambience ruin our evening. Zero atmosphere in the place when you walked in. Service very slow to bring menus, take orders, didn't take down order correctly, food took an age to come and then presentation was completely lacking (huge piece of fish just tossed on top of a pile of fries (the wrong fries), no garnish on any of the dishes, dishes were not hot and lacked flavour...), desert menus only provided after repeated asking, no offer of coffee or another drink(not that we would have stayed any longer) nothing inviting about the place or the meal at all. Have been here a couple of times over the past 3-4 months, each time giving the place the benefit of the doubt that things would improve, but alas no. Will not be back.

We visited today (bank holiday Monday) as we visited a couple of times before Christmas and it was excellent - unfortunately the same cannot be said now. The minute you walk in it smells damp and the place was empty, no people drinking or eating, no log burners and no music. We sat down after eventually finding a member of staff - slow service - food average / no music (even after asking for some music) because there was absolutely no atmosphere and in all honesty the whole experience was depressing. One poor lad looking after us and a few people who arrived in after us / absolutely no enthusiasm - personality and looked like he didn’t want to be there. We finished eating and quickly paid the bill as quiet honestly we had enough and wanted to get out - only didn’t we realise after paying there was a service charge added to the bill. By this point I honestly couldn’t be bothered to ask the lad to take it off as by this point we had enough. How you can add a service charge automatically for such distinctively average service is beyond me. Very sad such a buzzing place before Christmas had gone so dramatically down hill. Toilets a mess and the ladies exactly the same after my wife commented after visiting after lunch. Eating out should be a pleasure but it would have been more pleasurable eating bread instead of feeding the ducks. What a shame but what a shambles.

It is a lovely old-fashioned traditional pub with a cosy atmosphere and good vibes. The staff are very welcoming, friendly, and attentive. The food was lovely, but it had it's faults unfortunately. The prawn cocktail was delicious, but there was lots of water at the bottom of the cocktail glass. The chicken liver parfait was tasty, but the presentation was not very appealing at all. The roast rib of beef with trimmings was really good, and the cauliflower cheese is a nice addition. The puddings were lovely, Rhubarb crumble and Sticky toffey pudding. VERY disappointing - I'm sorry to say I really wouldn't recommend eating here. First impression when walking through the door was a very unpleasant smell coming from the loos. Not enough staff - one guy doing everything - bar, serving etc. We all wanted the burger to be told they only had one left (shocking for 7pm). The food was VERY bland, the fish greasy and the vegetable curry was like slop served with a dried out chapatti. One of the worst meals we've had. Unfortunately my daughter didn't feel well so we left and paid the bill quickly (that was a mistake as on reflection see that we were also charged a 12.5% service fee which all things considered is totally out of order). NOT impressed at all - extremely overpriced unappetising food. The Bull and Swan has really gone downhill. We haven't been for a few years but it used to be SO good. Certainly won't be coming again which is a shame as the idea of the Ski Chalet seems tempting (maybe that's what they have been concentrating on?) DO NOT RECOMMEND

This place has a nice vibe and the staff are friendly. The menu has a reasonable variety, offering something for most tastes . The room was reasonably furnished band but for some difficulties, would have warranted a higher rating. The towels were fairly old and one was badly stained, the bathroom radiator didn’t work, the extractor fan stayed on permanently and there were really loud gurgling noises from the plumbing whenever anyone used the bathroom in the room next door! The remote control for the tv was missing and on calling ‘reception’ it turned out that the staff are up the road at the sister hotel and no-one was on hand to come and resolve the problem. The suggestion was to go and ask the bar staff, which would have been ok had it not involved getting dressed again and venturing across the courtyard in the rain! Not so great for a 4* hotel. I’d visit for the pub and the food again but probably stay somewhere else. With a little more effort, this place could be a strong contender for the bustling visitor trade in Stamford.

Sunday night dinner followed by a great stay and a really good breakfast. My wife and I decided to book a night away at the Bull and Swan just as a quick get away to recharge. We weren’t disappointed, the room was lovely and warm, well decorated and surprisingly quiet given it looked out on to the main road. The provided teas and coffees etc. in the room were exceptionally good and proper milk in a small fridge, the fresh home baked biscuits were a really nice touch and were rather good. Dinner was great, I particularly liked my squash hummus with pickled veg and both our Pork and Beef dishes were rather good, the rice pudding and sticky toffee pudding were also great and all washed down with a rather nice primitivo and a couple of nice coffees. After a good nights sleep we went down to a great breakfast. Some nice continental style bits, fruit and yogurt with granola and compote followed by the very tasty and well cooked Bull English and more good tea and coffee. All in all very happy and looking forward to a return visit.
