History has disappeared! Visited a few years ago as we loved Band of Brothers, and there was a wealth of history on Easy Company, letters, photographs etc, but this has now been reduced to one small wall. We ordered drinks (man behind bar seemed grumpy at having to pour them!) and a plate of ‘artisanal flatbreads with hummus’ for the price of £7.50. When this was served I nearly fell off the pub bench as there were 5 small pancake looking things, and about a tablespoon of hummus (though it was v tasty). Can’t believe the price for what it was.

Visited Aldbourne as it was used as a location for a Doctor Who serial. Visited the pub for some lunch, but when the staff saw my Doctor Who t-shirt, they referred to the Doctor Who display in the corridor in-between the bar and its facilities. Ordered a light lunch and a drink, and the staff and some of the patrons were friendly and courteous.

We stopped off here on our way home to Wales from Gatwick Airport. Our main reason was to see the village; being Doctor Who fans we wanted to see one of the most celebrated locations in the show's history. Aldbourne became Devils End for the classic serial Daemons starring Jon Pertwee. However on the off-chance, we asked if they could accommodate our party (10 people) which they could and so we sat down to one of the absolute best dining experiences I have ever had. The food was excellent, both in terms of the choices on the menu and the standard of cooking. They also serve a good range of fine ales (including Wadworths 6X - a simply stunning beer). The staff were wonderful, so friendly and welcoming and you really felt as though nothing would be too much trouble for them. Add to that the fact that you're inside a wonderful period building, with a truly authentic country pub feel, located alongside a village green in beautiful surroundings, and you have the complete package for a great all round experience.

Probably the worst coffee and toasties ever. My wife and I tried lunch ordering 2 flat white coffees and two chicken and mozzarella toasties on brown bread. Firstly both coffees were that strong you could virtually stand a spoon up in them. Toasties were hard old stale bread with a small amount of chicken and shredded mozzarella cheese. Anybody who knows mozzarella knows it is wet and cannot be shredded, this cheese was tasteless and not mozzarella. The bread was old and dry, made worst by toasting. The whole lot cost £17, we will not be visiting this pub again.

Proper English country pub, good selection of wines and beers, including well kept ales. Varied menu, far from your basic pub grub, everything we have tried has been excellent. Smiley happy staff, very friendly chef personally comes out of the kitchen to check all is well. Nice comfy ambiance inside and chilled outdoor seating overlooking a very English green. Really like this place, good value, and interesting connections with both Dr Who and The Screaming Eagles. Worth a stop.

Excited to return to one of our favourite pubs for dinner. It had been several years since we’d visited, and this evening was a little special to treat a very good friend. For mains I ordered scampi, chips and peas. First of all when you order scampi you would expect to receive scampi but no I did not. What was on my plate was tasteless prawns in bread crumbs. To top that, there were only eight of them with a plate three quarters covered in pale yellow chips, and a small bowl of peas. That for £17.00 did not go down well. My friend ordered, salmon filet with sweet chilli sauce, rice and Pak Choi. The rice and Pak Choi were stone cold. The salmon was nice. My friend struggled to enjoy her meal and being typically English did not want to complain. I, however and Mediterranean and if the food is no good then I will politly say something. I informed the waitress that the rice and Pak Choi were cold, which she kindly took back to the chef only to return it several minutes later steaming hot with the fish now completely dried out. I informed her that I was not happy to be paying for scampi only to have prawns which were tasteless, hidden in thick breadcrumbs and not been informed that the scampi would be substituted by the chef and not have the decency to inform the customer. My only conclusion is that the chef couldn’t possibly tell the difference between prawns and scampi. No personal came to offer an explanation, let alone apologise. The two waitresses were lovely. Daylight robbery! Will not return or recommend.

The Blue Boar was used by members of Easy Company during WW2 and also has a good selection of photographs and copies of personal letters. This establishment was, apparently, restricted to officers only although ordinary servicemen could use it provided there were no officers present. The pub looks attractive from the outside. However, my wife and I found it lacked character and was slightly chilly even though the weather was warm and sunny outside. I ordered a salmon fillet with Pok Choy and boiled rice. Unfortunately, the rice came without any type of dressing or sauce and the salmon was a quite small piece. When I complained about the presentation, they did provide a small dish of sweet chilly dressing. Disappointing.

Came here inspired by dr who (Jon Pertwee days) but had a wonderful day out. The village is gorgeous, a real time capsule. Did a lovely walk up to 4 barrows. Well worth the views. Then a look around the very interesting church. The Blue boar is on the village green. A lovely old pub with good seating outside. Quaint pub atmosphere in front room and a restaurant area at the back. Service excellent. Coffee very tasty and the food for lunch was excellent. Homemade not shipped in! Chef even came round to ask if it was ok. It definitely was! And of course Wadworth beer and red wine very tasty. Highly recommended

This typically old and charming low-ceilinged pub overlooking the village green and the nearby church is soooo English. The plain wooden tables and chairs, together with hops hanging from the beams and a large log burner were just the place to order a meal near the fire on a wet day and after a long drive through country lanes full of puddles. The girl barmaid/waitress was very helpful and efficient. The specials and the menu were interesting and very reasonably priced. The food was excellent and traditional. My partner and I did not know this pub and chose it in preference to the other pub in Aldbourne bceause we didn't feel like going to a gastropub. I may never know whether we made the right choice, but we were happy with the food at the Blue Boar. It was home-made and good portions quite reasonably priced. I had boar sausages which were quite generous, though the mash was a bit lumpy - imperfect as you might expect for a not particularly sophisticated pub. But it was a good sized portion served with fresh vegetables cooked just right. My partner had a lasagne which he was happy with. The desserts were traditional (non-nonsense again) such as pear and apple crumble but were weren't hungry enough. The bar at the entrance to the pub, with its roaring fire, is pleasant and popular. The only real downside of this pub was the dining room where we ate. The furnishings looked old-fashioned, rather fusty and musty, and we were almost the only ones even though it was a Saturday night. That said, I expect it's busier in the summer because it's right on the village green. The bar was pleasantly populated with locals. The chef and waiters were very attentive and I was happy with the service. Would go again to try the desserts. But don't expect fine cuisine.

Blue Boar, Aldbourne, WiltshireIt was middle England at its traditional best - seated outside the picturesque Blue Boar pub to one side of the village green. Antiquated houses of various periods lined two other sides, and appeared to be lean into each other. Built on raised foundations on the forth side of the green, St Michaels Church occupied both the physical and (given original purpose) also the moral high ground on the final side of the green. There were probably >40 people doing what people normally do outside pubs – drinking, eating and talking (sometimes noisily) and, that evening, dominated by a couple of dozen mature (push) bike riders from Marlborough – they had ‘Marlborough Vets’ plastered across the back of their riding shirts – bikes leaning against the wall below where we all sat. They were clearly enjoying a beer or three after an evening’s ride. The pub emptied out after they had left – bikes and tail lights wobbling down the road on the way home - it was around 21.00.We sat enjoying the quietness of the village that followed and, with the sun disappearing behind the church and the shadows lengthening across the green, we explored the meal options. There were three of us sharing a table, and we ordered the Blue Boar Burger meal, the smaller of the two steak meals offered (7oz) and salmon. It was typical pub fayre - meals came with chips and vegetables or salad – and presentation and tastes that would satisfy the most challenging of pub food connoisseurs.Whilst we waited for the mains, we shared a starter – breaded brie – cheese that simply melted in your mouth with that additional layer of crunchy bread/seeds. Not, of course, for the faint-hearted calorie-watchers.For drinks we ordered Guinness, lemonade-lager shandy and a bottle of sparkling water, and we also requested a jug of tap water to take with the food for this had been the hottest day of the year – so far – with temperatures hovering around 30degC (which meant much higher in the full glare of the sun); everyone felt dehydrated after a day walking the North Wessex Downs. It had also been humid – it reminded us of Rome – but with a cooler evening, a beer or two on hand, and the meal coming it was a case, quite simply, of an ‘olde worlde’ England to be appreciated. The bar service was prompt – we had our drinks at the bar (and at the table) within minutes of ordering/sitting down. The meals arrived 10 minutes after the drinks. The table was serviced by a competent and friendly woman. The meals came with chips and vegetables or salad – and presentation and tastes that would satisfy the most challenging of pub food connoisseurs. The meals were large and filling. The burger - dry pattie in a dry bun - could have been a little more ‘exciting’ (pickles, fresh/cooked onion, beetroot salad next time?), but it complemented a long shandy and was no less enjoyable. We paid GB£51 for the meal – drinks GB£10 and food GB£41, with the steak meal and salmon meal the most expensive, respectively, at GB£13 & GB£12. We thought it reasonable value at around GB£14/each what with the theatre of the bikies and the social atmosphere of the tables spilling over on to the dark village green. The church tower became a black shadow that loomed into the sky as night fell. A handful of people were still out walking dogs at 22.00 and there was just the one table occupied when we left to head home.Aldbourne has two pubs. We eaten at the other pub a year ago, and had ventured to try the Blue Boar this time round. It’d been a good decision.Peter Steele20June17

"Found" this little pub situated on the green in the off-the-beat village of Aldbourne. It was a lovely, sunny evening & it had been a long day so, this place seemed just perfect.I ordered drinks from the friendly bar (manager Phil???), took a few menus & sat outside. It was there that I realised, this pub had been the fictional pub, "The Cloven Hoof" in the 1971, Dr Who story, "The Daemons". As a bit of an anorak, I was excited & delighted to have recognised the place!Food was ordered & all was good in the world.Things were so good that, on the following evening, the last of our Wiltshire holiday, we returned to the pub. We needn't have bothered...It was another sunny evening, just after 5pm on a Thursday, but the pub doors were locked shut. Asking a passing local, we discovered the place didn't open until 5:30. Undaunted, we took a stroll around the village & the nearby church. At 5:30 precisely, I sat outside the door anticipating my well-deserved pint. Another would-be drinker stood & waited with me. At about 5:40, a different barman (the owner, Michael?) could be heard struggling with the locks. Eventually, he managed to open the doors & we were in. I was first at the bar & expected, therefore, to be served first. Wrong! "Michael" (?) was pouring my fellow drinker, a regular, his pint first. This is a bit of an insult in the village I come from (London) & that was compounded by the landlord's comment about how he thought I wouldn't know what I'd want & how that would just waste his time! If my missus hadn't gone to use the "facilities", I would have walked out. Instead, at last, I ordered our drinks. I then asked about dinner but was told, very rudely, that the kitchen didn't open until 6:30 & there was a private party coming in who were taking over the restaurant anyway.I downed my pint & we made our way around the corner to a FAR better pub, The Crown where ALL the staff seemed happy to see us.Lesson learnt!

We found the Pub quite by chance, what a wonderful old fashioned Inn with origional features and non of that tacky stuff so beloved of the chainsthe staff were lovely, the clientele friendly and the food was superb and freshly cookedit quite made our dayit was made all the more interesting as the pub doubled for the Cloven Hoof in an episode of Dr Who

Miserable, unwelcoming landlord. Overpriced drinks, rubbish beer choice and undrinkable wine. No surprise then that it was virtually empty on a Friday evening. Awful atmosphere, so we left and went to a much better pub nearby. (And all those photos, by the way, are from before the present landlord took over the place!)

Beautiful village, and I'm sure they are overwhelmed in the summer. We had lunch on a saturday in January, so pretty much had the dining room to ourselves. Service was very friendly, and the food was tasty. Only minor issue was that it was a little cold and draughty, so bring a warm jumper - probably just one of those things for a building so old and pretty.

The Blue Boar is an extremely attractive pub on the green at Aldbourne. I had arranged to meet a friend for a quick lunch. Menu looked good but as we were very short on time we ordered sandwiches. There were a couple of tables already booked when we arrived. Given that it was only sandwiches they took such a long time and we had thought that we would have to either leave or if they did arrive take them back to our respective offices in a doggy bag. They arrived finally. Huge thick crusts but otherwise good. If you are in a hurry then probably not the best place!

I'm sure many people are going to mention Dr Who when reviewing this pretty little pub. It's a locals pub and foods fine and the village green makes it an idyllic spot in summer or a sunny day .. The Cloven Hoof in Dr Who and the Deamons with John Pertwee back in the 1970's, its picturesque and good for lunch with elderly and young alike.

The Blue Boar is a traditional country pub on the village green in Aldbourne near Swindon. We drive out there every now and again for Sunday lunch and have never been disappointed. The Sunday roast is nicely presented and served with a beautifully cooked selection of vegetables.Home made starters and deserts are also on the menu. You will need to be hungry if you want all three courses. It's very good value compared with other lunches in the North Wiltshire area and the quality is excellent. We were last there in late January and it was quieter than usual, but I would always recommend booking, especially in the summer, when the tables outside in the sun on the village green are packed. The beer is good too, so get someone else to drive if you can.

We had lunch here to celebrate a birthday. The pub was just about empty - a bit of a post Christmas lul. It was a bit chilly but the Christmas decorations cheered us up. The food was home made and pleasant enough but nothing really special. The service was friendly though.

I think the Landlord's long standing joke is that he is expecting a large party of customers, as he mentioned this despite seven of us sitting at the only occupied table. The food was good. However the restaurant area was chilly. Probably a nice place to visit in warmer climes.

Dropped in for a quick drink and found a mini beer festival. Nine beers on a stand in barrels and many Xmas ales. Very good indeed!

Six people for Sunday lunch, including two in their late 80s and one veggie. Excellent food, friendly service, good value, lovely old building, lots of character, unhurried servie (and I mean that in a good way - we weren't rushed & could take our time), in the best traditions of the English country pub. Absolutely nothing at all to dislike, and lots to like.

After a 6 mile walk we were made most welcome at The Blue Boar Inn. The food, beer & service was great. An added bonus was the attractiveness of the outside. The hanging baskets & floral presentation was second to none. Well done to all the staff, we look forward to returning to experience the roaring log fires.Thanks.Tucker

Great service, very fresh food, reasonable prices and plenty of time. I would have given 5 stars if there had been a little more choice for vegetarians, but otherwise perfect. It sits right by the village green so we could go outside for group photos.

Dropped in to the Blue Boar during the Aldbourne carnival for a drink. Busiest night of the year and packed. Thoughtfully they had beer outside. Four ales on and quite good although I am not a Wadworth fan.

Not many English Pubs left, they all seem to have turned into eateries vs a place to have a pint - this was one with a great bar menu - roast pork baguette followed by a superb banoffee pie - and even still it reminded a pub with great food as opposed to a restaurant that serves a pint - love to return one day !

We decided to call in here for a meal as the outside decor, flowers and the building seemed warm, friendly and inviting. How wrong this proved. On entering what appeared to be a very empty pub, we were told that a large party was expected and the dining room full.We stated that we had been looking for somewhere to eat and expected to be asked to eat in the bar ( which we were quite prepared to do), but to our astonishment were told there was no room so we left. Not a pleasant attitude.

We previously visited The Calley Arms for a Sunday roast but left disappointed and still hungry so decided to visit this pub. The roast was amazing - so tasty and definitely a must for another few visits. The location was wonderful set in a gorgeous village overlooking the green and the staff were very friendly and accommodating. I really would recommend this marvellous find!

Needed somewhere to eat whilst visiting this picturesque village with my sister. This traditional village pub sits off the village green with views over picture postcard cottages and the impressive church, which is well worth a visit for its unusual Elizabethan statuary. There is ample outside seating shaded from the sun as well as tables in the bar and restaurant. We sat outside and enjoyed our lunch of goats cheese salad and whitebait washed down with local Wadworth ales. Families played games provided by the pub. The village is full of history with excellent facilities, why not rest a while at The Blue Boar.

I was looking after my one year old granddaughter whilst the rest of the family attended a wedding in the church across the village green.I was very unsure where we would eat in Aldbourne but the landlord was happy for us to come in and turn his lounge into a nursery for an hour.I had steak and kidney pie and they did scrambled eggs on toast for my granddaughter, simple fare maybe but just what was needed.Never been to The Blue Boar before and may not be in that area again but those who are lucky enough to call in regularly are very fortunate.

Very friendly at the bar. We ordered lunch and despite the pub being not busy we waited in excess of 45mins for lunch!! People arrived after us and we're served before us leading us to believe they had forgotten out order. We asked and were fobbed off with its coming but still a wait. My advise eat before you come. The food was average!
