Stopped for lunch after a walk from Cambridge centre. Really warm welcome and catered for two fussy children - all left full and happy. Ate in the garden and all had baguettes and salads, children enjoyed the different fruit juices and we enjoyed trying a cider and beer. looking forward to a return visit already

Thought it time I wrote a 5 star review as I have been visiting The Blue Ball for a few years now having discovered it due to working occasionally in Cambridge. I usually visit solo after work and sometimes bring friends and family. The staff are always welcoming, the food consistently high quality and the ambience just right. I can't fault it and it has become my favourite pub-possibly of all time. I am also very impressed that all reviews are responded to. Thank you for your hospitality. Rachel

Have lived in Cambridge since 87 and I’m ashamed to say that today’s visit was my first, but it’s not going to be the last. What a great traditional pub this is, proper pub atmosphere very welcoming staff and reasonable prices. The menu is good old proper pub grub none of this overpriced fancy gastro stuff. The pub is very dog friendly and will now be my watering hole each time I visit Granchester. See you again soon and keep doing what you’re doing so well.

Walking back from a circular walk along the river at Grantchester, we were happy to see an advert taking us to a pub in the village. We didn’t find that one as the first one we came to looked sunny and pretty and just waiting for us to go and have a well earned drink after 8000 steps! The Blue Ball has such a welcoming couple that we stayed for two drinks and a pie! It’s worth remembering for main food as everybody who was exiting after Sunday lunch sounded very complementary about it! A sunny garden at the back looked inviting too. My partner was pleased with the beer that he hadn’t had before, and my soda and lime actually had a decent splash of lime in it for a change.

We came to this free house for Sunday lunch. Pretty much faultless. A charming beer garden, with some covered seating. Real ales on tap (they change, but when we were there it was mostly Adnams, alongside a Norfolk guest). The short menu of dishes, with locally-sourced ingredients, was clearly home-cooked and made a such a change from the identikit menus most chain pubs are offering. We didn’t sit inside but it’s a cosy, traditional interior. Clearly popular with locals, families, cyclists and walkers. Will definitely be back, and will walk there next time.

We really enjoyed a meal at this gem of a pub. The style of the bar, the friendliness (and helpfulness) of the staff, the delicious food and excellent beer. I didn't like this pub. It was full of drunk locals who were loud and seemed to think the pub was there for their sole benefit. OK - It was coronation day, but they didn't look like royalists to me. The beer wasn't that great either. Sorry. I know a lot of people like this place, but when I commented my thoughts to someone the other night, they concurred.

Such a warm, friendly and comfortable buzz of a pub. Good range of food - home made, delicious and very reasonably priced, and great range of drinks. Just back after a lovely relaxed evening with a few friends. I must also add that I left a favourite old scarf behind .. when I first phoned to check they couldn't find it, but remarkably - in the midst of a very busy evening there - they took time to call back about 10 minutes later when it was found. Very impressive level of personal service - thank you.

Rooms filthy and the food cold and bland. When the dish was sent back and asked to be reheated we were told no. I understand the challenges hospitality are facing at the moment around staffing and deliveries however there is no excuse for rudeness. The response in regards to the dirty shower, my partner was told that the showers weren't being cleaned daily as they had a shortage of housekeepers. Shocking considering the current covid situation. Over priced rooms and substandard food. Do not recomend!

Had a perfect lunch here.Came in this very attractive pub to a warm friendly greeting. Sat down at a table with lit candle and fresh flowers, and a view over field. A fire glowed in the hearth but was atmospherically warming but not too hot. Soulful music played quietly in the background at just the right level. We ate wonderful sausage and bean casserole then bread and butter pudding - both absolutely delicious but the portion sizes were just right so we weren’t too full. Food was very reasonably priced. Had great beer and French rose. Service was fab.Could not find fault with anything. Left saying, very randomly, that even the fussy Goldilocks would find everything to be just right here. This is a gem of a pub hidden away in the village of Grantchester. Very pretty outside space, with a traditional old world inn feel inside. The food however is just not what we expected for the price. The choice is limited, and not that interesting. Unfortunately my friends chicken dish was bland, the potatoes undercooked, with a side serving of green beans for colour. My dish was also disappointing. Being both experienced cooks, (I was a secret diner for sometime), we agreed we would not go there again. It was off to the Orchard for a scone and a cup of tea for us as we still felt hungry. I am sorry if this review upsets the owners but just being honest. However for a cosy drink and a lovely atmosphere its a great pub.

We have just spent two nights at the "Blue Ball Inn", Grantchester. We have never experienced hospitality quite like it. From the moment we arrived on Thursday afternoon we were treated like old friends, with a smile and a ready quip of banter. The pub bars are charmingly yesteryear, perfectly suiting the mood and atmosphere of the village; quiet, laid back and convivial almost hiding the the industry in the background which makes the Blue Ball a real winner. We enjoyed two great evening meals in the bar, with food so very obviously prepared and cooked on the premises, nothing pre-cooked or packaged here. The same can be said for the two breakfasts that we enjoyed during our stay. Everything served with friendly politeness. The drinks also showed care and quality. The two cask conditioned ales that I tried were clearly well kept and were most enjoyable. The bed room was clean, and well stocked with everything you might need. There was a good choice of hot drinks, available with teas includingEnglish Breakfast, Earl Grey, Japanese Green leaf and mint Teas, also fresh coffee and Hot chocolate. We also had a generous supply of fresh milk to accompany. We cannot praise the wonderful little pub-hotel-bistro too highly, and cannot wait for the opportunity to visit again.

Walking into this pub is like stepping into centuries of history. It has not been changed with lots of interesting features including 'ringing the bull' a very old pub game.

Honest, stylish proper pub. Impressed that the new owners have 'nailed it' within a short time. The food is superb and imaginative. Quiche - perfect, Vegetable Tagine ditto. No chips with ketchup sachets! Bravo

Chose this pub for Sunday lunch after reading the great reviews and have to agree with them all. Loved the building, the atmosphere, the warm welcome for dogs (and owners!) and the food. 4 of us had the beef stew with brown bread and it was delicious. This was followed by apple crumble and coffee. All at very reasonable prices. Enjoyed a perfect Sunday afternoon with family. We will be back next time we’re in Cambridge.

We have visited here in the past for just a lunchtime beer and sandwich when it has been quite quiet. This time we went for Sunday lunch with friends. I had confit duck with gratin dauphinoise and red cabbage- delicious and very reasonable price of £10. This pub has managed to retain the atmosphere of a pub while still serving good food. There was a log fire going and informal arrangement- none of this ridiculous ' wait to be seated' malarkey. You do not feel out of place just having a quiet pint at the bar or having a meal. You cannot pre-book a table here which also helps the nice informal atmosphere. Good garden at the back and tables in front where we noticed food was being eaten as well. All in all very good- we will be back.

We chose this pub as it's an independent and I'm glad we did. Our hosts were super friendly and helpful. The food was delicious. I had mac and cheese and my husband had the beef stew. Definitely worth a visit.

Six of us stayed at the Blue Ball over the weekend and had a wonderful time. The B&B; rooms are beautiful and the breakfasts fabulous. It was a nice change to stay in what is essentially a traditional village pub. There was always a warming fire in the grate in the main bar, which is where breakfast was served. We also dined there on Friday evening. The menu was not large but the food was freshly cooked and excellent. I recommend the very tasty Chicken Balti. Originally we found this pub by accident and decided to return for a weekend break. The position couldn’t be better if walking beside the river to Cambridge is your thing. Toby is very knowledgable about Cambridge and recommended a nice place for lunch on the Saturday. There is also a selection of alternative restaurants/watering holes in the village. The weather wasn’t great but I can’t fault the accommodation, food or hospitality found at the Blue Ball.

My wife and I stayed there a week ago for two nights. We enjoyed our stay, food was great, everyone was friendly and ready to help with local things to do. We did the walk to Cambridge along the canal , plus the walk to the village and Tea room. We traveled here directly from Heathrow by train, and it was a great way to decompress from our jet lag.

Needed a B&B; for a night on a business visit to Cambridge, searched the internet to find a local Inn... and was delighted to find the Blue Ball Inn just a few minutes drive from the centre of Cambridge. It exceeded expectations - excellent ales, good hearty food, delightful bedroom, superb breakfast and very welcoming and friendly staff. Will certainly stay again, and have already recommended to friends and colleagues.

Stayed here for one night last week. We were greeted very warmly and shown to our room which was at the rear of the pub. Beautifully furnished and spotlessly clean with quality toiletries.

We had a three night stay here early in August and were very happy with our choice. The room was spotlessly clean and very comfortable. Even though it was situated at the back, with a window opening onto the beer garden, the noise stopped at 10:30 or so. The breakfasts were really good with plenty of choice. We ate here on two evenings and really enjoyed the food, beer and gin. The food is unpretentious, plentiful, tasty and good value.

We came here with our son following years admissions to Anglia Ruskin University for an evening meal with him, the meal was excellent the staff are attentive the food was very very good and there was an excellent selection of beers available, it is a little pricey but in my opinion it was well worth the money due to the quality of the food and the delightfulness of the surroundings and the friendly staff.

We were greatly impressed by the welcome we recieved in this pub. It had a warm and genuine feel, quick service, excellent food and tremendous value for money. We sat in the garden for a drink before going inside for our food. From the window we could see a footpath leading to Granchester Meadows and after eating we strolled over to the river.

Visited for lunch and WOW!! Decided on the omelette and it was the nicest one I have ever had. Cooked to perfection and full of my chosen fillings. Asked for a glass of water and it came in a lovely decorated bottle straight from the fridge - lovely touch!!

Booked a Sunday lunch for 2. Good service and the food was excellent. The only observation was that I could have done with a little more meat but that didn’t spoil the meal at all. Loads of vegetables and cooked perfectly, not too hard and not too soft. All washed down with a splendid pint. It’s not the cheapest but it’s not the most expensive and I’d say you get good value for the cost. Very much recommend a visit.
