This is a wonderful, charming, independent pub. Renata and the bar staff are so friendly and welcoming. Her food is excellent and different, drawing on her Hungarian/Austrian heritage. The chicken kiev schnitzels are amazing, so generous and garlicy. I also had the best ever burger here, with partly pulled meat. I love coming to this place.

We have been coming to this pub for a few years, the welcome is always like being part of the family. The food is interesting as the owners are Hungarian and often add a little twist to old favourites. The new dark beer is a interesting. There is often a sugar free dessert. The pub is dog friendly and regular dogs may learn a little Hungarian!

We had a lovely lunch in this cosy pub with friendly outstanding service. Will be back soon for more homemade proper continental style strudel! Great quiet spot with fireplace on a cold January day near public footpaths- and it’s a dog friendly pub too!

The food was fantastic with a really good selection of great dishes. If you are into your real ale then Dad had their own Black Horse stout which was excellent. The owner and bar staff were super friendly and accommodating. The dog loved lying in front of the fire and was spoiled with gravy bones. Could not recommend this pub enough.

After reading the reviews I was very disappointed, so unless they have changed their chef we were not amazed. Frozen roast potatoes and frozen yorkshire puddings !!! Three tiny potatoes ! Such a shame as the atmosphere, hospitality excellent . Please Please get rid of the frozen potatoes Roast your own !!! and Yorkshires not hard. Other than that we would have given an excellent . Strudel was lovely

A great pub. Nice and cozy with a small Menu but amazing food. My farther and I both had the Hungarian veal which was delicious. We arrived late and it was not a problem at all. Service amazing.

This is a hidden gem. We have been coming for about a year, it never disappoints. The food is freshly made and there are dishes you won't see in any other pub of my knowledge. Seasonal Hungarian dishes are the speciality, always well cooked. There are the usual pub favourites as well. Renata and her team are always happy and helpful.

The staff they now have excellent.Great place to be. Staff make you feel welcome and cannot do enough for you. Love their hot tomato soup. We eat their,the whole family , also I drop in for a coffee when shopping .My family are witherspoons fans. Staff are all polite which makes a big difference.

We came here for lunch after looking at the reviews on TripAdvisor. The food was really good, lots of options and even a few things that weren’t on the menu, made available for fussy people in our party. Good portions, hot, freshly prepared food and the staff couldn’t do enough to please. Definitely recommend and will be back.

This is a gem of a pub that simply should be tried. Home made freshly made food that is delicious. Welcoming and friendly staff and a warm homely atmosphere. Just a few minutes from South Mimms Services which begs the question why wasn't it busier? Anyway keep it a secret so I can get a table when next in the area in January!

We went for dinner last night and it was wonderful. Such a great choice of challenging food. All fresh and locally sourced. Lavender and lime cheese with fig salad was amazing. Pork and Apple Burger lovely and my husband thoroughly enjoyed the beef. Oreo cheese cake was out of this world as was the Eton Mess. Thank you. Perfect way to come out of lockdown. Great jazz in the background. What more could you want?.

Superb food . A great evening .Went with the “Specials Board” and we were advised that the portions were generous and that we would not be able to manage all three courses. The land lady Renata , then talked us through all the dishes. The hardest thing then was then trying to pick which one. Went with the schnitzel. Possibly one of the best meals that we have ever had. And the dessert , I was told by my wife ,was the best ever. Not sweet toothed , I went for another beer , so I was happy too.Comforted by the Covid processes in place ,so a great evening with perhaps a few calories too.

As a family of 6 adults and twin babies, we went for a late Sunday afternoon lunch, Honestly we could not fault the staff (were very welcoming and helpful) we all agreed the food was excellent and good value for money. For us we will defiantly return 10/10.

Me and my other half had lunch here on Saturday after a long rainy dog walk. I ordered the Cod with sautéed veggies which was delicious, hot and seasoned fantastically - the BF had the Chicken Kiev Schnitzel with Israeli salad, his portion was very generous, the chicken was cooked to perfection and the salad & rice which accompanied it was fresh and tasty. We shared an Oreo cheesecake for desert which was perfect. Service was fantastic and quick. Prices are reasonable considering the portion sizes. Fantastic lunch as usual. Very highly recommended village pub.

We had dinner in this pub tonight without any expectations, but we were really pleasantly surprised. What a lovely place with real fresh food. Amazing size escalope- some hungarian style- I can not remember the name-. Lovely service, great value.

Lovely, different menu- lots of continental style specials- all freshly cooked. Nice place, friendly service. Really large portions, at least the escalopes for sure! We had few special request regarding diet needs, and they catered without any issues to our needs. Super friendly and welcoming place.

The Black Horse is a great pub that serves delicious food. This is a free house and a real country pub, from the moment you enter you have a warm greeting from the staff. The food is all cooked on the premises and the chef had a good touch with flavour and a generous hand with portions! As well as the regular menu there is usually a specials board. The desserts are good and if it’s available I can recommend the plum tart. At the moment is open on Friday, Saturday and Sunday so phone to book your table. Give it a try, I’m sure you won’t be disappointed.

Been here often and the food is great with excellent table service especially from Jackie. Bar staff cater for various beers which gives a good selection

Visited tonight very friendly staff, the owner came and spoke to us a very nice lady she read the special board to us I had liver and onions my mates had schnitzel when the cane I ordered a schnitzel on the side good portions of quality food. Can not recommend highly enough

Decided to eat here for lunch. Wow! What a great first experience. I had the fish served with Greek salad and sweet potato fries, Claire had a pulled pork burger with chips and salad! Eton mess for dessert, wow Good size portions and the food was super fresh. Staff are friendly and nothing was too much for them. We highly recommend this place, many thanks for a job well done. We visited the Black Horse on Sunday evening. The garden was really pleasant and comfortable. The food was absolute great! Simple menu, Real fresh food. We had the Fish and chips special and a Plum desert. Hidden away from the main road, it is a lovely find! We will be back and recommend this place.

We had a lovely Fish & Sweet potato chips on greek salad meal last weekend. The garden is quite lovely and comfortable. They have sanitisers all around the building and antibacterial wipes on all tables. All in all we had a lovely meal. Worth to visit!

Chanced upon this bar. Locals were so friendly, the history of the bar is amazing. Had a wonderful evening there.

After a long day travelling on Bank Holiday Monday, myself and my wife were looking forward to a nice meal, based on the reviews we had read online. The signs on the main road indicated that the pub was serving food. However, we were told that they were not serving food due to the Bank Holiday. No mention of this on their own website. Disappointed...

Today my husband and I met friends for lunch, we chanced this pub as location wise it’s between us, on arrival to be honest we were a little concerned, looked a tad neglected OH how wrong were we, yes it’s true the outside could do with a little tlc but inside very pleasantly surprised, perfect home cooked locally produced food, service was spot on, would not hesitate to return and highly recommend, 5 stars definitely ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

One of a nice little traditional pubs left in the area. Nice home cooked food, good variety. The place is pet friendly and has a large back garden area, which is ideal with a dog. There is a lovely walk area around the woods and it is nice to stop for a lunch and few drinks.Good value for money!

As a party of three we chose The Blackhorse Pub as being just about half way between Gravesend and Milton Keynes and convenient to the M25 and to all three of us. It was easy to find and very welcoming, we all had lunch which was excellent, typical honest pub fare, generous portions, promptly delivered. We stayed some hours and on leaving we were thanked for our trade. A good unpretentious pub that suited us well, would use again.

Had a lovely meal here whilst visiting the area. Plenty of 'specials' to choose from as well as the main menu. Would definitely recommend this place for food.

Popped in here after the potters bar charity dog show . Trip advisor said dog friendly and indeed they were . Very nice old pub with very friendly staff . Would quite happily return here when in the area .

This pub is a traditional English pub within a Mile of South Mimms services situated at Junction 23 of M25 & Junction 1 of A1M,Stopped for lunch I ordered traditional fish & chips with mushy peas and chips my colleague ordered the steak pie. the pie was home made and was well filed but was disappointing with the "traditional fish & chips" as instead of a normal fried fish is came with two pieces of fish 3 inch square and normal petite poise peas

A warm and homely atmosphere with a real fire and a real Christmas tree. We all thoroughly enjoyed our lovely festive dinner... and my mum was highly impressed with the real napkins and napkin rings!

Always nice to visit nice bar staff. Keep busy cleaning and attend to topping up beers.Menu could have a vamp as rather repetitive over the last year's be nice to have platters as changes as other pubs. Spelling mistake on "Restaurant" Hope to pop in again soon.

I celebrated my big birthday here with a family meal in the garden, followed by drinks and music late into the evening. The menu was agreed with the staff who couldn't have been more accommodating. They laid out tables in the garden and provided a sumptuous Mediterranean type feast which was enjoyed by all.We had vegans in our group and some very fussy eaters and all were happy. And it was great value for money. This is a very welcoming pub at all times but they excelled themselves on this occasion.

We were recommended to visit for one of our weekly jollys to country pubs. Glad we were as not a place we would have found otherwise . As my mum, aged 89, said, it's a proper pub, old fashioned, roaring log fire, horse brasses and old beams. I'm sure it's as good in the summer with a large garden to sit out in. The service was friendly and quick and the food delicious. What a gem to find. My parents are elderly and not always easy to please, but they both loved it here. Also no blaring loud music, pleasant background music. Thank you.

We visited this pub en-route to Boreham Wood, the landlady made it a welcoming bar!A few pre-ordered food by phoning ahead and it was all ready in minutes of our arrival and they said it was really good.The green king ales were not to my palate so I moved on elsewhere. nice friendly bar that is in need of a facelift.
