The Black Pepper in Wigan

A party of 17 attended who had various meals. Found service slightly a bit slow but put it down to numbers of clientel. I did not have a starter as nothing was on the menu that I liked the look of. Main was flat iron steak. Was a bit tough. Noticed there was only one toilet for everybody. Not what you can call hygienic.

Great place to eat. The staff are great and the chef is amazing. Celebrated a relatives birthday with 15 other family members. The food was amazing. All three courses were outstanding. This is a bring your own booze place so there was no extortionate drink prices to pay. Would definitely recommend. There is parking on the street free from 6pm.

Found the place by accident and luckily for us they had a table. Food absolutely outstanding top quality produce beautifully presented by lovely staff. We all had a Sunday roast which was 10/10 the desserts look to good to eat 100% for presentation and taste, thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and can’t wait to return SOON Thank you.

Friends had commented on this little gem and as a group decided to give it a go. There were 16 of us and have to say the service and the quality of the food was amazing. The menu was varied and a great change and had some great twists. We all received starters and mains at the same time, no hanging around for a few plates which was fantastic for such a large group. The staff were attentive and not overpowering and the food was sublime. Cant wait to go back

Walked in without reservation on Sunday at 6pm. Given a warm and friendly greeting and they found us a table. Loved the informal feel of a family run restaurant. My partner could only have a starter due to health problem, this was met in a helpful manner and served promptly at our request. Bit of a wait for my choice of Sunday roast but it was worth it as it was excellent quality and I reluctantly could not eat it all. No room for a dessert ☹️. Wine by the glass was good quality French Vouvray and my Chilean pinot noir was equally good. Amusingly, wine bill was £15 more than the food as we both had a second glass. Next time I would order a bottle of either wine just to balance the cost. A nice experience with friendly service and happily recommend a visit

Look don't muck about. Get in here and eat your fill and then come back and eat the other things you couldn't, coz time and fat. Best meal I've had in Wigan hands down. Rice pud and lamb burger was choice!

Staff were very attentive. Not a big menu and not many vegan/vegetarian options unfortunately. However, the staff did offer to make a vegetarian alternative for me from scratch with was delicious and very much appreciated! Very lovely staff. But the prices are a lot different on the online menu

Had starter, main and dessert (never normally do desserts) but all 3 were delicious.

Good Quality food,2 bottles of wine purchased .We leftt forgetting to take half bottle that was remaining.We returned within 10 mins to be informed it had been discarded.£19.00 was paid for that bottle, and to discard so soon??,not allowing the possibility of returning to pick it up. Within a reasonable time.I was annoyed and thought it was out of order

Visited The Black Pepper with my husband for our anniversary and we were not disappointed. The staff are incredible. So cheerful and friendly. And the food is AMAZING. Our meal was absolutely delicious from start to finish. It was our first time here but definitely not our last.

We have eaten at Black Pepper before, but never for Sunday Dinner. This the first, but definitely not the last time! The staff here are so friendly and cheerful and most unusually, we have found, when they ask how your food is, they look at you and listen to what you say. The food was absolutely delicious. There are some imaginative dishes on the menu - my daughter had the panna cotta sweetcorn starter and said it was wonderful. I had the fish patė which was served with a rhubarb jam which was a perfect combination. The brisket that two of us has was beautiful and the leek and potato dish my daughter had was equally wonderful. This is a bring your own bottle establishment but they do not charge corkage. To sum up, we would all three highly recommend this place. Thank you to all for a lovely experience.

Group night out. Food exceptional, and surprised me with the quality. Sadly not licenced to sell alcohol, but allows to bring your own.

Both Google maps and their own website show them to be open today (Thursday) but very clearly closed and deserted. Maybe there is a good reason, but please update your website. I shall not bother trying again

We had a brilliant meal here - we were visitors from Bath and it was the best meal we’ve had in Wigan. Great menu choice and the food was delicious. The staff were really friendly and excellent service.

I have dined a few times at Black pepper ,on every occasion the food, the service the atmosphere has been brilliant,it’s a hidden gem with a brilliant hostess ,and the food never fails to impress in its presentation and flavour,every course is a sheer delight .

Ok we’ve booked a restaurant in Wigan and we like good food, is it going to be as good as we hope it is…… Yes! And then some! All 4 of us have been to restaurants in many places/countries and we all enjoyed everything we had tonight 😋 3 courses each, nothing to fault and we will be back again and again and again! Here’s what I had Starter cauliflower cheese croquette with pickled carrot oh yum! Chicken supreme, potato and spinach curry, Thai green curry meatball and coconut and almond roti ….. mmmmhmmmm Passion fruit cheesecake with pistachio ice cream … Wigan sized portion 🤣 and seriously delicious, 3 of us agreed 🤣😋👍🏻 5 out of 5 and seriously highly recommended Just do it 👍🏻😋

Food outstanding service exelent great atmosphere can't wait to go back already booked

The brisket Sunday roast was delicious and very well cooked. Just about managed to do justice to the generous portion of sticky toffee pudding. Very friendly staff gave a warm welcome to all.

After planning to go for a belated Valentines Day meal, me and my partner decided to try somewhere in Wigan town centre in an effort to support independant businesses in our local area. Although we only ordered a main, we was blown away by, what we both agreed on, to be the best Lamb Shank dish we had ever had! The meat was tender and fell off the bone, with the accompanying (root) vegeatables and red wine gravy resulting in this dish being a special one indeed. From a price perspective, I can imagine a few locals moaning but when you're eating food of such stature i'd pay double! The staff was very friendly and I was dissapointed to hear about a string of no shows / last minute cancellations they recently had the displeasure of encountering. Some people just do not understand the struggle of an independant business. 10 / 10, we will be back!

Friendly service food average scott egg starter £10 or over yes we paid it £68 pounds with no alcohol or soft drinks 2 starters and we shared a sweet for a wigan town centre restaurant I wouldn't recommend dry salmon and waitress vaping in kitchen area open view sorry we would not recommend or go again if you can afford it then go but I would say average not worth the money

We were there on Sunday and shared a wild mushroom risotto starter and not had a roast beef dinner. Absolutely delicious food. The risotto was perfectly flavoured and just the right amount of truffle. Three slices of melt in the mouth beef, good gravy and a really good cauliflower cheese were the highlights for me. Lovely glass of Pinot noir, it was delicious. Server was really friendly and the chefs in open kitchen took real care with what they made. Will definitely visit again. Many thanks.

Visited here with three friends after two failed visits not due to the restaurant it was on our part. Greeted by friendly staff in a warm and friendly place. The service was very good but the food was exceptional. So happy we were at last able to dine here - and it will not be the last.

I didn't really know what to expect going here. Never heard of it before, but the reviews lived up to expectations! Really great food put together by a chef with taste and adventure. With it being a smaller restaurant, you can see into the kitchen and see the food being made and feel a part of the magic. I had been told it was BYOB but on arrival this was wrong. They don't have a bar to order from/sit at, but they do have alcohol to serve and welcome BYOB.

The food was excellent, the changing seasonal menu is superb. Can't recommend it enough.

Wow what An absolute find. The food we had was Devine and the service was slick ever though it was Busy. Excellent value for money. To be honest I think they are under changing for the fantastic dishes they serve. Will return next time we are in Wigan.

Lovely food, service and an enjoyable experience.

Really disappointed after reading reviews....starters were lovely, a bit pricey but everywhere is. Ordered 3 flat iron steak meals, 2 medium n 1 medium rare.....1 of the medium steaks were rare (dont know what we have to do to get a steak cooked right) barely seen the pan. To their credit they struck that main off the bill n gave us a complimentary dessert. Which brings us to the other bug bear....ordered 2 chocolate tortes, they were rock hard....didnt want to complain again as we'd got one free but we still payed £98 for 3 ppl n 2 meals were free. Im sorry Black Pepper....wanted so much more but wont be coming back!

We visited The Black Pepper last weekend, the restaurant is small and has a lovely open kitchen. The staff are so friendly and accommodating. The food was excellent! The Hake from the specials board was lovely and I would go back to have it again....

The food including its presentation was excellent. I had almost given up on eating in the town centre before hitting the pubs, but this restored my faith. Don't go for dessert usually but had to try the lime cheesecake with gin jelly and cucumber lolly...

Heard this was worth a visit. Only a small place, but very homely and friendly. Made to feel very welcome. I had pate to start which excellent. Tasty, with toast, and the ratio of toast to pate was aligned. Too often had ten times too...

Giving this place a 5 star primarily for the dessert, but also for the potential as it’s great to see a place like this in Wigan. The starter of pigeon was cooked well and the pear, fig and Gorgonzola went well with it. The salmon risotto was a little under seasoned and the egg was a bit watery. Salt and pepper comes in little packets - prefer it to be in grinders which most places have reverted to now. The venison main was cooked well, with gorgeous Parmesan mash. The flat iron steak was beautifully cooked, and the fries were crisp and fresh - this too was a little under seasoned, and the pepper sauce was unfortunately a bit unpleasant. The desserts were to die for though! Service was great, staff were lovely. Would recommend trying this place.

My first visit, and safe to say, it won't be my last. A cracking town centre eatery. My girlfriend and I had the Sunday roast, which came with a choice of either chicken, or beef brisket. I had the chicken, and it was superb, lovely and tender. My girlfriend had the beef, and it was cooked to melt in the mouth perfection. Both the starter and dessert were of the same high quality, and added to the relaxed atmosphere, and this was a superb treat for me, and the perfect pick me up, after a period of illness. Keep up the good work.

This restaurant is a personal favourite of ours. The service is friendly and prompt and the food is amazing. It’s bring your own beer with no corkage fee so no more having to drink fizzy lager (my preference, but you can bring your own fizzy lager if you want to🍻) Andy is a wizard in the kitchen and his menu is really imaginative with so many flavours. High quality ingredients make distinctive, well balanced flavours. The courses are a little more expensive than other places, but the quality is far far higher. The bring your beer policy makes the overall cost the same as inferior restaurants, but with a much better experience. Becky is so welcoming its like coming home to your family but with way better food. Give it a go, it’s No1 for a reason

This was our 1st time at this little restaurant with a party celebrating a friends milestone birthday and have to say it was great. Food and service were spot on and I will definitely go again. Outstanding in every way!!!! Amazing food, interesting and tasty menu. Only issue you would have would be choosing. I could have had all of the starters, mains and desserts! Beautiful local bistro, now my go to place in Wigan. Superb!

The food is nice and the atmosphere is very friendly, however the menu is tiny so the choice is very limited. Steaks were cooked beautifully and appetisers were lovely, but the chips tasted like they were made of very old potatoes and were the only downside of our meal.

Just had takeaway from The Black Pepper and it was delicious. I honestly can’t fault any of the dishes. We struggled to choose between the dishes because they all sounded very tasty but went for 4 main dishes and spicy fries to share between us. The portions were really big for Tapas dishes so we were quite full after sharing 2 but managed to eat it all because it was just so good, we couldn’t stop! Looking forward to getting out of lockdown to be able to go and eat in when we can. Delicious!

Our favourite restaurant in the Wigan area. We have dined-in many times and also used their new take away menu. Dining indoors is lovely, small and friendly. The food is by any standards, excellent. My Wife and I are looking forward to the doors of the Black Pepper being opened once again. So far, we have only tried the Sunday dinner using their takeaway service. It was hot, freshly prepared and once plated up at home, every bit as good as what we have come to expect from the Black Pepper. I wholly recommend anyone try this small, family run restaurant.

Our favourite restaurant for miles around. Due to covid we are unable to dine in but we had the takeaway tapas last night and the food is every bit as good as we remembered. We had 7 dishes, every one tasty, followed by a cracking brownie. Give it a try and ensure it survives lockdown.

Now I enjoyed my Saturday evening meal it was superb quality and one of the best in Wigan. So why only 3 stars? Well firstly front of house is non existent. The young lad all be it very polite looks lost at times. No explanation of a wine menu or prices or taste sample. They really need to watch Fred Sirieix from first dates programme and learn some tips. If they refine on these touches it will be a wow restaurant.

We came here again for Sunday before the second lockdown . Beautiful tasty food , homemade beef brisket dinner, with lovely winter vegetables was amazing as always,. We had the blueberry panna cotta with winter fruits for dessert with was so tasty . This is an hidden gem, in library street and big value for money. All the food is homemade and fresh. The owners are a family run buisness and very polite and friendly. I always feel welcome here and the food is always a 10/10. Once we get out off lockdown number two ends , we will be back . We'd had this place recommended to us by a few mates so decided to try it out and we will definitely be continuing those recommendations. Excellent and friendly service, delicious food and probably the best roast I've had in Wigan. Definitely check this place out!
