Had food twice here during a visit. On first occasion had a chilli which was excellent, on next visit caesar salad that was very substantial and pleasant. The bottles of wine ordered on each occasion were excellent, whoever chooses the wine knows what they are doing, also not overly expensive. One of the better pubs in Lampeter.

We were so pleased we found The Black Lion after driving for miles to try and find a pub open on our way to a staycation on the coast. We were greeted and served by a lovely waitress who followed all the correct covid procedures and sat us at a a well sanitised suitable table.My husband had a delicious Caesar salad and I opted for the beef burger... not something I usually choose, but I was really hungry and this one was amazing. The drinks were served correctly ( two glasses of a good Sauvignon for me).. not handed to us directly.We finished off with a quality coffee and Eton mess. We stayed at the black lion Hotel for two nights. Myself, my wife and 5 year old son. From the moment we walked in to the moment we left we felt so welcome. Nothing was too much trouble even when really busy. Dee was really good with all of us, especially our son. Breakfast was perfect and evening meal even better. We had only planned to eat there the first night and Try somewhere else for the second but we didn't want to risk trying elsewhere as this place was so good. The chefs are amazing and all staff seem happy to be working there. Seems very well managed. We shall return in the future. (the Martin's, Rugby)

Visited on a miserable Monday just before the heavens opened. Full checks for temperature and details taken. A reasonably busy lunchtime that gradually became busier. Excellent service, food well presented and very good. Half price with the Government scheme. The only downside was walking out into an absolute downpour!

This is divided into three sections: a restaurant, cafe and pub/ bar. Enjoyed a pot of tea while husband had a pint in comfortable chairs in front of the fireplace in cafe/ hotel reception area. This place had 4 counters/ bars in a central position. Ordered at bar and waiter served drinks at table. No selection of teas on offer. Advertised “Drink and cake” offer seemed very good value at £3:75 but did not see what cakes were available . Mid afternoon - so no menus on table. Would have like to see what food was served for possible future visits. All day Menus on blackboards in Restaurant but not in cafe or bar area. Waiter was very polite and a Welsh speaker which is a plus.

Went there for a works lunch. Ordered our food as soon as we got there but it took over 50 minutes to turn up and what a disappointment it was when it did. The curry only had three bits of chicken in it and would not have been enough to feed a child, so it was sent back, only the centre of the burger could be eaten because all of the outside was burnt solid, chicken pieces were unedible and the lasagne well no comment. Their so called 'side salad' consisted of a bit of onion and some scabby lettuce. Nobody came to see if everything was ok not even when we went to pay. no apology for the curry and no alternative offered. Will definately not be returning and will not be recommended.

Fabulous stay at the Black Lion, this place has it all and when working away from home makes you feel so welcome, my room was superb, clean and comfy, the bar served a good range of drinks and the food is fantastic with very generous portions, I am pretty awkward with pub food but couldn’t fault this place. The staff are a real credit to the owners both here and at the Nags Head down the road which I believe is owned by the same guy, if you want a livelier time head down there, best of both worlds, some real laughs had in the Nags head with the locals.Can’t think of a negative at all, I was with a couple of workmates who equally had a great week, keep up the good work guys and you’ll get there and have the perfect place, we will certainly head over if we have the pleasure of Lampeter again

After visiting the Black Lion restaurant last night for the first time in over 10 years I will not be rushing back. I was enticed in via the menu from the website but soon found out this didn't correlate with the actual menu! Never mind I opted for the steak instead of the mixed grill which was a little over done. I had to send the peppercorn sauce back as it was cold. Once the sauce had been returned hot it didn't really resemble peppercorn sauce and was far too creamy. Taking a visit to the loo mid course I was astounded to find someone had been sick in an urinal and it was overflowing outside onto the carpet near the kitchen. Extremely unpleasant incident and I reported it to a young man near the bar (who stated he was a member of the Black Lion worforce) who informed me it was a leaking tap and that the Maintenance man had gone home. This was definitely not the case and I attempted to get the mess cleaned up by asking to speak to a Manager and the youbg man hastily left. Fortunately, the polite/attentive staff member, Nim took it upon herself to resolve and before long the Chef/kitchen staff? were making good the situation which had flooded near the kitchen. As the meal drew to its conclusion our desserts arrived- my mum's brownie and ice cream arrived minus the ice cream. Some of the food was Ok (Dad's gammom and mum's fish and chips) but the experience on the whole was one to forget. There were 4 other diners in the restaurant so it wasn't as though they were rushed either. The attention to detail just wasn't there which was a shame. Will not be visiting again.

Our lovely stay was spoilt by the parking ticket received from their FREE car park. Please be aware apparently, although we were not informed, we were only told to enter registration number and length of stay. You need to register your stay each and ever time you go in and out of the car park. We have called the hotel on at least five occasions who promise to liaise with the parking company and phone us back, which they do not. Can only assume they receive commission.

I visited on the 5th October with my son and husband. We were a bit surprised at the prices, £6 for a strter and £12 for a main (pub curry, lasagne and burger). Nevertheless we dont mind paying if the food is worth it. We ordered 2 starters and 3 mains. After approx 30 minutes the waitress arrived with my curry. I told her I hasnt had my starters yet and she asked if I wanted to send it back until after my starters which I did. Next she returned with a waiter with both strarters and all mains saying the chef asked if we would havs it all together. It didnt even all fit on the table together. Despite the food being nice and the waiting staff being efficient,we did not enjoy the meal which had cost £44 and will not be returning despite visiting Lampeter quite often. If you are going to charge £6 for a starter (3 or 4 chicken wings) serve it as a starter. Avoid this place

This place has become the most popular place for food in Lampeter. It was very busy here on a Friday night, but the service was second to none.There is a new very expereienced chef in charge of the kitchen and very competent serving staff. Welsh speaking as well. An excellent Hotel but also a great pub! Nick Wright and his Team have made an excellent job of transforming this wonderful old coaching house into a very acceptable and inexpensive hostelry. The reception was polite and business like, parking was very convenient for a town centre location, newly refurbished rooms were comfortable with everything to hand with the added bonus (most unusual in this day & age) of a bath; can’t beat a soak after a long journey, such joy! Excellent choice of drinks in the bar and the Gower Gold IPA was the cherry on the cake. Menu is very good with a varied choice for most tastes and the next morning, I can only describe as a true Full Welsh Breakfast. A few teething problems to be sorted such as lack of WiFi in the bedrooms which I am certain will be sorted by my next stay and when shortly back in Lampeter, most certainly will not be staying anywhere else.

Stayed here for one night whilst dropping of my daughter to the university it has a free car park at the back, the room was spacious and looked like it had been done up the bed was big and comfortable the room had a big tv with plenty of channels and plenty of tea and coffee. The restaurant was wonderful plenty of choice my wife is a vegetarian and she was thrilled with the choices on offer, food was filling and good value. Breakfast the next day was also excellent with a vegetarian option and unlimited tea and coffee. This may become a regular place for us to stay as cannot fault the staff who are friendly and the cleanliness is first class.

I have lived in Lampeter for 29 years. I have seen many changes to The Black Lion Royal Hotel. The hotel has a lot of history. In recent times I was down heartened by the drop in it’s standards and it’s subsequent closure. However, it has had a fantastic new lease of life. The team that are now working there are raising the standards and bringing life back into the establishment. My family and I ate there yesterday evening and we were all very happy with our meals .There was a wide choice on the menu and everything was presented beautifully. The waiter was helpful, polite, friendly and efficient. The surroundings were clean, neat and freshly decorated. There were several other diners who all appeared to be enjoying their evening too. Bravo to the Black! You have been resurrected!

Stayed here for two nights to attend a wedding in Lampeter. The hotel has been recently refurbished and they have kept the original style of the old traditional hotel, which is great. The staff are brilliant, very friendly and helpful. The breakfast was amazing and the evening meal was lovely. The bed was very comfortable and parking is free if your staying here, located through the archway behind the hotel. If we are ever in Lampeter again, we wouldn't hesitate in staying at The Black Lion Royal Hotel

This was our first visit to the black lion, we only visited the bar area, staff were very pleasant, and will be back again when in the area to sample the food

Staff were friendly and welcoming on arrival. We were then shown to our room, which had just been refurbished, and it was great. The beds were really comfortable and the room had a nice feeling about it. While the bathroom lacked a towel rack and the shower was too weak to wash properly, the speedy WiFi, large TV with lots of channels and comfortable beds more than made up for it. The breakfasts served downstairs in the pub were phenomenal, the sausages were a hit!

My second visit to the Black Lion and on both occasions the staff have been extremely friendly, welcoming and helpful.However, at dinner I happened to observe one of the cooks/chef's place a slice of raw bacon on to an oven tray and then wipe his hands on his uniform and proceed to Handel the buns for my burger without washing his hands. I did bring this to the attention of a senior member of staff who requested have the buns changed.Second to this, upon entering our room which was clean and well presented, I started to notice that there was a lot of noise coming from what I thought was the room above. After some time of hearing loud voices and what sounded like furniture been moved around I then complained to reception.Soon after I heard people outside of my door asking where room was. Moments after this I realized that the commotion that I could hear was in fact the noise from the bar downstairs. At 22:40 the Duke box started playing music, in our room the music and noise from the bar was quite ridiculous. As I write this it is currently 23:30 and the music, the shouting and games of pool are still going strong!This has prevented me from being able to sleep. I have been awake since 04:30 and have a long journey ahead of me in the morning. When I check into a hotel room for the purpose of sleep I expect to be able to do just that! I understand that the pub has a license until 00:00am but that being said I do not expect to pay good money for a room which is not adequately sound proofed!I am very disappointed and will be seeking a refund!

Everything looks good at the beginning but the problems are evident. We went out for dinner on Saturday night and we left the keys of our room at the reception. The guy who worked there(who apparently was the owner as well) picked up our keys and smiled so we thought everything was alright. We were back at the hotel by 22:30 and there wasn’t literally anyone in the hotel apart from the guests. We tried to call the hotel number and nobody answered even though online there was written it was open until midnight. We tried to knock at the door but obviously we didn’t receive any answer. I tried to go to the back door where the reception of the hotel should have been but we needed a pin we hadn’t been told to come in. After about half an hour waiting outside luckily we met a girl who works as a waitress there(she was walking near the hotel but finding her was a lucky coincidence) and she knew the pin to get in from the back door and so at least we were inside at the warm. The keys by the way were in the bar of the hotel that is alarmed during the night so after other 30 minutes a guy who knew how to turn off the alarm came in order to get our keys. At 23:30 so after a full hour we managed to get inside the room. The room was tidy but the towels had some stains on them and bread they gave us for breakfast was burnt. In the end they gave us back 15£(price of the breakfast) but the owner of the hotel who didn’t tell us the back door pin and picked up our keys before going out for dinner didn’t even show up to say sorry. There was just the same guy who got our keys the night before who did everything he could but he wasn’t the boss. The “excuse” they gave us was that they picked up our keys because they thought we were checking out( doesn’t make sense because the guy who got our keys was the same who accompanied us to the room 30 minutes before) and the pin for the back door was written on a sheet inside the room but if that is the only way to enter in the hotel after 21:30 it should have been explained clearly. So if we had had the keys of our room but not the pin it would have been the same as we wouldn’t have managed to get in the hotel. Conversely if he had known the pin we could have got in the hotel but not in our room because the keys were in a fully alarmed place.I give two stars just because the waitress and the guy who came during the night were very kind and helpful but the organization is just awful. I don’t recommend going to this hotel to anyone and if you have no choice, ASK FOR THE PIN OF THE BACK DOOR AND ALWAYS KEEP THE KEYS OF THE ROOM WITH YOU.

Our first visit and we were very pleased. The pub seems to have been recently taken over and the outside was in process of refurbishment. The staff ere friendly and service was fast and efficient. The menu was a good size with specials on a board on the wall. Not fine dining but the usual staples plus some good extras. Food was excellent and portions were large. A very good choice.

I recently ate at the Black Lion for the first time, meeting my daughter for a quick lunch. We were greeted by a really pleasant waitress/bartender (Nim?) who prepared a table in the window for us whilst we ordered drinks.The décor seems fairly new but its a small place and fairly typical of the local pubs.The special was a rib-eye steak for £12.50. The meal itself was a good size and quality, the steak done exactly as I'd asked. Finished off with a de-caff tea (finally somewhere that caters for de-caff!) I was genuinely full for the rest of the afternoon.Service was quick and the food piping hot.The waitress checked on us and made sure we had everything we need. When we paid she had a laugh with us, a rare thing these days, making the whole visit a really pleasant one.The food is good but the staff really make this place. I'd recommend a visit.

Decor etc. much improved and improvement occurring but still a way to go it feels. Very friendly service but the one lady working was busy and as such it took a long time for order to be taken and no offer of dessert etc. Food an average price and standard, side salad tiny and no promised ‘slaw’ on any dish. Sadly frozen/reheat food as revealed when unable to accommodate requests. Promising place and looks likely to improve as new orders finish it off but for now, it was average. Fine, would go again but not rushing to.

The Black Lion has been reopened in Lampeter now for a couple of months and proves to be very popular. Under new management. It’s one of the busiest places in town.We really enjoyed our food. There was Rib eye steak on the specials menu for £12.50. Excellent. Quick service as well.They have just introduced pay and display in the car park. However, they refund the charges if you spend £3.00 there fair play.

In May 2019 I was here for a family meal on a Sunday. We had a lovely carvery and appreciated the generous portions of meat and veg. The staff were all very friendly and the vegetarian option (lasagne) was nice.

Approaching The Royal Black Lion one could be forgiven for walking past. A tired looking exterior with no effort taken to plant up the outside. However once inside the hotel is light modern and airy, with a smart casual dining area. We chose to stay and dine and were rewarded with a fine meal. The menu had a reasonable amount of options, allowing something for even the most picky diner. The food was well cooked and the staff pleasant and courteous. I would eat here again. But visitors to Lampeter need to be able to see past the façade.

Customer service at its finest, a lovely relaxing stay and great breakfast, ample parking and lovely deep bath. Definitely coming back here.

After a long period of decline, this pub closed down, but was re-opened late in 2018. Refurbishment is taking place in stages, with the bar and eating areas now having benefited from updating and redecoration. They contrast sharply with the outside appearance of the hotel, which is further down the list of work to be done. The atmosphere is friendly and relaxed with comfortable armchairs as well as the usual pub furnishings. The food is traditional pub fare of good quality at very reasonable prices. The range of drinks is reasonable with a good selection of real ales as well as wines and branded beers. Service is efficient. The town-centre location right next to the main bus stops is very convenient for those passing through the town, whether for a quick cuppa or something more substantial.

Popped in for a quick bite to eat, we had our dog with us and were able to sit outside. Wow the food was excellent, great price and fresh ingredients. Very tasty food and great service.

This pub recently reopened and has painted and tarted up the place but the food is even worse than it was before!

After years and years of inconsistency it looks like this place is finally closing down. Sorry to see the place go as it's always been a great place to get a cheap dinner.

breakfast was satisfactory but the clean washing the vacuum cleaner around the restaurant half - heartedly did not help, especially when she threw it down and stalked off when asked to stop whilst people were still eating. Breakfast was being served for at least another halbf hour.
