A great dog friendly pub that offers good food and massive portions. Friendly staff and a real happy local pub that is pleasantly busy but not rowdy or unwelcoming... Ideally located near to the castle and other tourist attractions.

Room we had was ok, small and a little tired but was only for 3 nights and it was comfortable enough. We had one issue with the room and that was sorted out immediately. Full English breakfast was lovely, thick rashers of bacon and fresh mushrooms. We had a Sunday roast with 14 of the family and they managed fine despite another big party arriving for a Christmas dinner. Nice atmosphere in the bar, good beer and friendly service, you can't go wrong staying here.

The Black Lion is very much open and a real gem in the heart of cardigan. I have eaten here twice in the last couple of weeks, the food is all home cooked and delicious. The first visit was unplanned we had lasagne and a burger, the chips were home cooked and the portion size was plentiful. Really tasty!

My daughter treated me with a Sunday Lunch at The Black Lion in Cardigan West Wales, on Sunday 16th June 2019. I had the Roast Beef Dinner. It was the most beautiful meal that I have had in a very long time. Not only was the beef very tender the accompanying vegetables were cooked to perfection. The head chef, Mr Mike Morgan came over to every table to make sure that all was well and for a sweet I took his recommendation and had the most wonderful Apple Crumble that he had cooked. I had Vanilla Ice Cream with it. I need to add, that the waiters went out of their way to make sure that the service was first class. Nothing was too much trouble. I have to say that the people of Cardigan are so lucky to have this wonderful place to eat at and from what I gather under new management, who I might add have been so lucky to obtain such a first class chef in Mike Morgan

We always loved visiting this family friendly pub whenever we visited the area, but then it had closed for about two years. Well what a lovely surprise to find it open with a new family running it and it is unchanged. It has the same oldie worldy, cosy and welcoming atmosphere. A good range of drinks including some local ones at fair prices. We had a Sunday lunch which was very tasty and generous portions, my only negative point was it needed to be served warmer...but it was their first time doing Sunday lunches, so I forgive that! We also went in the week 2 adults 2 children for a meal. The menu does not do any of the meals justice, at first it looks expensive for what it sounds...but what we were served was worth the prices....fresh, homemade, tasty and plentiful dinners. Really enjoyed both visits.

Couldn’t see that many places to eat in the centre of Cardigan, so opted for here. A nice busy pub, good menu. A handfull of locals eating there, so a good sign. I had the fish and chips, which was very nice, and a huge portion. My wife had the Ploughmans platter, which would have easily fed both of us if we had known. Both meals really nicely presented. Friendly, welcoming staff.

My husband and I along with our 2 Border Collies were in Cardigan looking at property for sale and had booked a camp site for the night. The weather got very bad and we didn't fancy putting up a tent in the rain so decided to try the Black Lion Hotel as it will allow dogs. The Landlady greeted us warmly and said they had rooms available at £70 and we opted for breakfast £7 each. The room was adequate for us and the dogs. The only small issue was the toilet seat was broken. We also had our evening meals which we had in the main bar as we had the dogs, this was fine. We were also allowed to feed the dogs while we were in the bar which was great. The meals we ordered were lovely and served with a minimal waiting time. Breakfast was served in the upstairs function room from 8am and after a little wait the landlady arrived and served us. There was a lot of variety from fresh fruit to cereal, croissants, yogurts and traditional cooked. Both myself and my husband went for the cooked breakfast and this was lovely! The Best Cooked Breakfast I have had in a long Time! Complements to the Chef!! When it was time to check out we could not find the Landlady to give the keys back.Perhaps a bell on the bar is needed. The Landlord and Landlady have only been running the Black Lion for 4 months and although it needs a bit of TLC I think its a lovely Pub and would recommend it!

We ate here an hour ago, we went to a couple of other pubs first & they were dirty & uninviting, so we found the Black Lion at first it looked the goods! Friendly, clean & comfortable, the bar girl changed shifts & was replaced with a woman who didn't understand English very well, then we ordered our meals Lasgna & chips £5.95 cold & tasteless, the black lion burger with cheese, bacon egg, onion rings & steak cut chips & some other chips in their own little frying basket that still had a plastic clip lock tag attached as when first purchased. The meal was presented well on a shale serving plate, but the star of the burger should be meat ! WRONG instead of a well seasoned beef mince, I got a cheap sausage mince! Really! For £9.95 I want quality & taste.

I booked this hotel for 2 nights for my birthday in July 2016. Upon arrival I was advised that I needed to park my car in a disused car park for £3 extra per day. It is not at the back of the hotel. When I manged to get all the cases & dog up the 3 flights of stairs to apparantly a deluxe double bedroom. It was far from deluxe, not big enough for 2 people and a dog no space to put bowls, bedding.I can put up with dated decor but not to be clean I can not especially at £90 per night. Upon inspection there was cut toe nails on the carpet, blood stains on the bedding and the bathroom was not clean. There was also an overpowering smell as you entered the room. I went down stairs to enquire about the room I was advised that this is there deluxe bedroom and that this is all they have. I wanted to speak to the manager but he was nowhere to been seen. However the lady behind the bar (she was very pleasant) sent the cleaner up to the room to clean it. When I went back into the room the smell was disgusting it was from the vacuum cleaner. I did not stay in this hotel I decided to leave and find somewhere else to stay. However all was fully booked so we decided to come home. I have put a complaint into the hotel but heard nothing through the 3rd party. So thanks for a very disappointing weekend!!!

Very embarrassing to see a large party who were there before us have their order forgotten, this made us worry about our order. this large group ended up walking out as the manager was apparently cooking, although she appeared once they left. when our food turned up it was a bit shocking really, Me and my wife ordered rib eye with all the trimmings. we got served rump steak on a coleslaw bed with gravy, wasn't the worst steak but disappointing when expecting rib eye. My brother in law ordered a swordfish steak in balsamic glaze, this was pure white and tasteless and the glaze which appeared to be soya sauce based was on the plate. I felt most sorry for the waitress as they were having to answer to irate customers for poor kitchen service.

Pedimos a la camarera para comprobar dónde estaba nuestra comida. Ella finalmente regresar y dijo chef y supieron de nuestra orden y ni siquiera comenzado todavía!!!! Rooms were small and disappointing really. The quality of a Spanish two star hotel. Rooms at the front are very noisy with traffic through the day and drunken people after dark. The pub will play music(very loudly)till 02.30 on a Sunday morning. Breakfast is between 8 and 9am, but you have to book it the day before. We did not eat on the hotel at all. There is free parking at the rear, if you a are lucky to get one of the 7 spaces. Beware everybody in town parks here as well. We spent long days out exploring the countryside and amazing beaches, and only came back to the hotel to sleep. Probably wouldn't use again, unless it has a make over. I had to endure three night here this week and unfortunately the new owners need to learn a few tricks fast before this place is forced to close down. I was given a family room as the block booking was not clear enough to expect me. The room had 4 single beds which were very old and tired. They were very very soft and creaked with every movement during sleep. The sheets were old and didn't fit correctly. Nobody visited the room during the day to replace towels or clean, however as it was a family room and I had four sets of towels to consume during my stay. My work colleagues advised me not to touch the breakfast as all that was on offer upon arrival in the morning was a plate of English breakfast swimming in oils. Not sure how much the company paid for my room but I would not pay myself over £25 a night for this standard.

We saw them most weeks, had a nod when they first took over, a few years ago and couldn't be bothered speaking from then on. If it hadn't been for the very professional staff we wouldn't have bothered going back for the past ten years.Let's hope that the new owners are going to be professional and actually welcome people into their establishments. One point; keep doing the daily papers it seems so homely. Another point; stop doing the awful 'TV' musi: in fact, any music; unnecessary in an hotel like this.

Just as well we told them not to wait. The room we were in was very cold and we asked for a portable heater to be turned on as it was made even colder when smokers went out the fire door to smoke and left the door openLots of potential but didn't quite come up to what we were hoping for

We were the first to sit down for lunch, drawn in by the big 'Families Welcome! sign out the front. At first impression, the pub frontage is old and tatty but fresh inside. We ordered two chicken and three beef dinners. Service was quick and friendly, tables clean. Delicious meals with the best vegetables I have ever eaten in a pub....perfectly cooked and abundant, 'Given the size of your family, we thought you'd like to have two dishes of veg..." the waitress said! This little gem isn't ranked so low for nothing folks, let me tell you how bad they are....The building itself is quite nice but unfortunately that's where it ends. We called in for an evening meal on Thursday 31st July. We chose to seat in the restaurant at the rear but I commented on the strong smell of what I thought was Stilton, sadly it wasn't my favourite cheese it was the body odour of the young fair haired waitress! Awful, how her colleagues and boss can't have noticed this is unbelievable. Anyway, being far too polite to say anything and too hungry to try and find somewhere else we 'risked it' and ordered up. I ordered a sirloin steak, I had to remind the waitress to ask me how I would like it cooked though. Then the wait......45 mins later our slightly uptight looking waitress appeared through the kitchen door with what we presumed was our food, oh no, it was food (including my sirloin as I was later to discover) but served up to a couple who had sat down and ordered after us!Never mind we thought, can't be much longer. A few minutes passed and our waitress boldly approached our table to inform us that there we no sirloins left and would I like a T bone?No I bloody we'll would not I politely informed her, too hungry and tired to argue the toss I started to stand up to leave. "Did the chef not know this when we ordered?" My partner innocently enquirer, "no she's been busy!" came the indignant reply. Ok, we'll we're off then I announced and we walked out of the pub.We were stood just outside considering our options and cursing our luck for picking a duff venue when a young lad in a pair of cut off denim jeans came bowling out of the front door and shouted "have you paid for your food?" Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear I said and felt compelled to inform this little boy that in fact we had not had any food and relayed the story of this disaster. He was speechless and retreated with his tail between his legs (I think it was a tail) back inside eyeing us angrily but without any bottle or professionalism to challenge what we'd said or apologise to us. End of tale. The moral of this story is try and look on trip advisor before you eat anywhere, certainly never eat at this dreadful little dump.I look forward, almost more than I look forward to Christmas to reading any reply from the owners/manager of the Black Lion.

I had a beef roast dinner which consisted of large slices of beef on a pile of fluffy mashed potato, with boiled and roast potatoes and a huge Yorkshire pudding also on the plate. My husband had pork with the same amount of potatoes. Then up came another dish with four vegetables - carrots, leeks in a cheese sauce, mashed swede and peas, and a gravy boat of rich, thick gravy. The food was hot and delicious. The only word of warning - don't eat any breakfast as the meal is huge! Pity we were at the end of our holiday as we would definitely have eaten there again - and will certainly do so next time we are in the area.

We arrived in the Black Lion after a quest for something to eat and somewhere to rest our feet before we checked in at our hotel. We ordered food from here and at first I was extremely taken aback at having not much more that £1 change from a £20 note! We had ordered a beef and onion baguette, a brie, bacon and cranberry Panini and extra chips and 2 glasses of coke. Food took a while arriving, and whilst we were waiting my husband and I had the opportunity to read through the papers provided. When the food arrived it was beautifully presented, well cooked and tasty. I was very happy with my purchase. You receive a lot of food for your money and the quality of the ingredients shines through your meal. We ate at around 12pm when there were few customers in the pub and were surprised when the staff allowed a dog (and owners of course) to sit quietly in the corner. This didn't bother us as a couple, but I can see how it would some so be aware of this. The hygiene levels of the pub are squeaky clean though, it is immaculate inside and very well looked after and loved by the locals. I would heartily recommend looking at the specials board if you can't decide what to eat - paid off for us.

Usually my husband and I just have coffee here and read the papers as we really like the pub , shame it always seems quiet, but it suits us.Im very fussy about coffee as I am allergic to caffeine, but they do very good strong always hot coffee here, including a good decaff americano.Today we had lunch , and the presentation of the food had a real wow factor, both meals served on black slate trays. My steak and ale pie was really excellent, tasty, plenty of meat, lovely crispy flaky pastry top.Hubbys cottage pie equally good , beautiful presentation of onion curls on top of the mash. Only criticisim was that my mash was near enough fridge cold on the bottom as the mash is served on the slate which cant be warmed. But we will eat here again-the staff , especially the young man who I think is the manager, are really friendly and eager to please.A really nice pub with good quality food.

We went as a family for Sunday lunch recently and were disappointed. The veg was cool and of the cheapest variety and some of the swede mash had large, 'al dente' lumps. it would have been pointless mentioning it to the staff because they couldn't have done anything about it. The gravy and the cheese sauce were from a packet and the portions of meat were, I thought, mean; I also had a large piece of gristle. Chef didn't appear too enthusiastic. I think a review of chef procedures is needed to keep the food hot because we certainly weren't late. Bar staff were good. The Yorkshire puddings just weren't cooked and were no more than stiff batter.

Very friendly staff had a plough mans and a coffee, coffee came with a home made little gingerbread man which was delicious. The ploughman's was with a warm crusty roll, welsh cheeses, home cooked ham and pickles and salad, was lovely and very large couldn't eat it all. Would definitely go back. Such a shame a lovely pub like this with a fire wasn't very busy.

Now under new management, the level of service and standard of food has greatly increased. I would highly recommend visiting the Black Lion Hotel for their Sunday Carvery and to stay in their quality and historic hotel

We booked a few nights in the black lion as a long weekend away. Had a great rooom which looked like it had been recently re-decorated. The variety of foods for breakfast were good and there was something to suit everyone. Service was excellent. As we were satisfied with the food and service we had a bar meal every night which was quick and easy. The bar menu was full of different meals that would most definately suit anyone, including childrens meals. Quality of food was superb. Very happy with everything at the black lion and i will definately be returning here in the future.

We were a party of 6 and some of the Food quality was acceptable but our ploughmans lunch was very disappointing compared to the menu description that sounded delicious. The service was also poor, the waitress seemed more content chatting to the barman that checking if customers were happy, We received our extra orders when we had almost finished our meal and only when I had asked for them. I could understand if things were busy but it was virtually empty (perhaps that should have been a warning sign). Wouldn't rush back!

Lovely welcoming pub. Popped in for a quick bite to eat at lunchtime. Pub was quite busy which is always a good sign with a quite a few people eating. I had chilli and rice, and my fiance had chicken salad. Both were very good and hit the spot. Good honest pub-grub would be the best way to describe it. Would certainly eat there again.

During a recent visit to Cardigan to celebrate our friend's birthday, we decided to have a lunchtime meal at the Black Lion Hotel. We thought we would taste the traditional Welsh Cawl which was on the menu.We were so disappointed - it was served in very small dessert bowls, consisted of mostly swede and carrots (only about 3 pieces of swede and carrot fitted in the bowls) - very few potatoes (I had 1 piece) and no trace of lamb! It was cold and not appetising at all - definitely not the usual flavour of Welsh Cawl. It was eventually accompanied with chunks of cheese and pieces of bread, but by the time they were served, the Cawl was ice cold.We do not usually complain, but due to the cost and standard of the dish we were so disappointed. We have eaten at the Hotel in the past and enjoyed our meals.Staff did apologise, took back our meals and served again in bigger soup bowls. Unfortunately, this time it was even colder, although we did spot tiny pieces of meat hiding under the veg.It was such a shame as some of friends had not visited the Hotel before.

Ate with 2 others.Service was excellent by a waitress called Jennifer. After recommendations, we had starters of Welsh Rarebit, Whitebait and garlic mushrooms. All were deliciously freshly made and tasted superb. The quality of ingredients really showed.Mains were lamb shanks and welsh pork f*ggots (can't use the whole word as Trip Advisor thinks that it is swearing). Again, were delicious!Would recommend and eat there again.

We booked a table on easter sunday with the family. The food was very tasty, including the starters, mains and puddings. There was a variety of different and starters and puddings. Also, the carvery was great as there was a large choice of veg and 2 different choices of meat. The whole family enjoyed the experience. The restaurant upstaires has been re-newed and is very clean. I would've liked to see more people having carvery as there wasn't many other people there. Other than that the experience was very good. Will definately be returning in the future.

we had read on tripadviser. Unfortunately this has gone down enormously over the years. It used to be such a lovely, historic place. We stayed elsewhere but visited for a drink - the smell on entering was awful - a bit like drains when you're abroad! We asked for 2 vodka and tonics; no sign of ice and when asked they said they didn't have any. We said that we wouldn't have the drinks then and lo and behold ice appeared. We stayed for one drink - we were the only 2 in there - the hotel is now up for sale. Someone could do something with this place and restore it to what it used to be. A terrible shame.

Surprisingly for a Friday so close to Christmas, the pub was empty. We had booked for a party of 17 and were catered for in a function room on the first floor. Nothing was pre ordered and we all ordered individually from the menu. The staff deserve praise for the way in which they promptly dealt with every request with humour, smiles and very good service. The food, although basic, was hot and very edible and definitely enjoyed by everyone in the party. An excellent experience.

This is a bit of a dive. The cups were dirty and they really could do with more staff. The food is all nuked and of poor quality.Considering Dylan Thomas used to lunch here the place could be a gold mine. The market caffe is better than this and faster. Just a tad too dirty for me. My friends normally stick to the fry up as it is fairly safe. All I can say is yuk yuk and more yuk.

Visited the Black Lion at lunch time only to find it virtually empty. The woman at the bar said we could not have a hot chocolate as her machine had not warmed up!. Looked at the menu but soon became obvious we were not welcome as looked as if the staff were having their meals at the back. Regular visitor to Cardigan but will not be visiting the Black Lion again.

What a let down this place is . The staff were friendly, the food was poor obviously microwaved no taste at all. The owner of the hotel was there so I confronted him with my issue, the expression he gave was like go somewhere else then . Obviously doesn't know how to run a business or have any customer service skills. Not impressed

A solid local once again, with a revamped eating area. Good local beers and always a ready supply of pork scratchings. It could be utterly sensational, with some of the rooms waiting to be rediscovered, but as it is, I am not complaining.

Unfortunately can't rate the food or drink as when we walked in on a nice sunny day to get a drink and a spot of lunch we were ignored by the lady behind the bar. I sat down at the bar and she still ignored us. After a while I discussed this with my husband and we deceided to leave and go elsewhere. Having read all these other reviews thats probably why it was empty.Really unprofessional for the bar staff to be discussing other members of staff and manangement on the phone infront of potential customers. I said to her to carry on her conversation and we will go elsewhere and she never even looked in our direction.

the meal was an absolute tragedy and could be cooked better by a chimpanze!! We had never seen dark brown chips before and even our five year old son (who could eat chips every day for every meal)commented that he could not eat such depolarble chips. The lasagne was unedible due to the fact that it was rock solid and could have been put to better use at the shot put competition in the Olympics!! We have never once complained about a meal before but we were so disappointed.

Myself and my family visited for the first time today for lunch. The welcome was very warm and friendly, the price of drinks were very good and a lovely lunchtime menu (cooked fresh). I have to say that everything about the place was very impressive, including the way that the landlady dealt with 2 extremely rude women who moaned about the wait for the wait for their ice cream. I cannot speak highly enough of the experience and it was only tarnished by these 2 idiots with champagne taste and beer money who obviously attend various venues trying to obtain something for nothing. Highly recommendedThank you

The rooms were average, the breakfast was average, the price was average but the staff were cracking. Opened up early for breakfast the morning after and the night before they found us a pub that served real ale for the rest of our party then cooked for us before we went there. They really did look after us.Watch out for the absolute bonkers plumbing.

We arrived at 12 o'clock on Sunday and was shown upstairs to the restaurant. We were the only people there but it had only just opened for lunch. The waitress who served us was very polite and made us feel welcome. We both had pawn cocktail to start which came with a very fresh tasting salad and bread on the side. We then moved onto the cravery where we had the choice of roast beef and turkey both cooked perfectly. A large range of veg where also available. All tasted great. For dessert I had the starwberry cheese cake and my wife had chocolate sponge cake with custard both tasted great. Would defiantly go again if in the area. The 3 course cravery was £12.95 which was the average price for the town

I think I will start with the worst. A mega burger! Stale roll, 2 burger's like leather and a slice of cheese plonked on the top. !!! PLEASE!!! What is your cook!!!BLIND!!! Meal number 2 mashed potatoes and pie!!NOT!! Locally produced and!!NOT!! Home cooked as you advertised. The pie tasted quite nice that probably because it was not cooked on the premises, mashed potatoes had no taste whats so ever and presentation was nil. Meal number 3 was cowl this was passable as far as taste and presentation goes but it must have been a vegetarian dish as I saw no meat in the bowl. The bread roll was given to her husband who could not eat his mega burger. Meal number 4 Beef straganoff, the easy cook rice was ok! but the sauce was hardly there! What more can I add, only that we will not be going BACK!!!!

They were understaffed for a holiday weekend. Other than that the service was good, though wait times to order were long. I took away a full star because we came to watch the formula 1 grand prix, which they advertised on sign outside. We were enjoying the race with a couple of local people we met, then the staff turned the race off 2/3 of the way through. Switched over to a football game in the middle of the race. That was quite disappointing.

The Hafod is such a special place! The location is majestic and the rooms are full of character and comfort. With wonderful, welcoming staff and excellent food, this hotel is the perfect place to relax and enjoy the surroundings. With Devil's Bridge at the doorstep, it was lovely to be able to wake up early to complete the waterfall hike before it got busy. Stay for the Sunday roast!
