Excellent value for meals offered. Veg could do with a bit longer, a little to firm for us. But overall very good, we will be back...🙂

Visited this lovely restaurant last Thursday evening, whilst on a short holiday in Wales. We had an amazing three-course meal. The food was piping hot and really delicious, the service was friendly and excellent throughout and the atmosphere was really pleasant. It was quite full but there were no delays and everything we had was terrific. Will certainly make a return visit and would definitely recommend it as a terrific place to visit. A lovely location too. Thank you to all the team for a brilliant evening and sincere compliments to the brilliant chef 👏🏻

Loved our stay at the Black Lion, friendly and relaxed atmosphere, immaculate room and good food. Would highly recommend a stay here.

We stayed for 2 nights. One of the best places we have ever been to. We had an evening meal both nights which were both excellent. The bedroom was spacious and the bathroom well equipped with toiletries. Good car parking facilities and very friendly staff. I would definitely recommend. We will be returning.

Went here for a family meal we sat outside because we had 5 children with us. The food was very good service great with pleasent staff. The location is superb by the river the children with ages rangeing from 3 to 13 had loads of space to run about without disturbing other people. I recomend this place highly and will definately be back.

Brought auntie and family friend out to this wonderful establishment for a meal and have to say it's got 10 out of 10 for me,the staff were warm and welcoming and very polite and helpful, the food was served promptly and tasted as good as it looked and good good portions also reasonably priced, I would highly recommend stopping here either for a drink or a meal you won't be disappointed.

For my birthday my partner bought me one of those vouchers-in-box for places to stay around the UK. I wasn’t bowled over and put it to one side for several months. I wanted to go for a trip on the Cambrian line along Cardigan Bay and looked for a place to stay nearly. The Black Lion was the closest to it (not too many options from this voucher thingy). Booking in this way you'd kind of expect something lost in the 1970s that's struggling to get custom...maybe something akin to Fawlty Towers. How wrong I was! The pub was set in a quaint little village by a small babbling river. It was nice, modern, the staff were friendly, the food VERY tasty and reasonably priced. The room was clean, quiet, comfortable and fine with an en suite bathroom. We had a lovely full English the following morning which set us on our way to Anglesey. Throughly recommend staying here, as well as the Cambria Way ale. Thanks to John and his team for a lovely experience.

We're from Colwyn Bay and have been meaning to try the Black Lion for a while. We went today for Sunday dinner and weren't disappointed. Very picturesque location over a stone bridge and the pub is on the left. Very nice inside, clean up to date toilets staff were friendly and efficient. We were surprised it was fairly quiet considering it was the middle of summer holidays and we didn't need to book a table. Food and atmosphere was great will definitely be visiting again.

Absolutely disgusting! Paid almost £7 for a BLT. 1 slice of COLD bacon on cold toast!! Would NOT recommend!

Friendly staff, lovely location, comfortable beds, and in a pub. What's not to like?

We had a 3 night stay. Quiet village hotel/pub about 5 miles from Abergele. Ideal getaway. Lovely welcome upon arrival. The room was a good size, very clean, comfortable with a well-stocked beverage tray. The bathroom was a good size and had lovely toiletries provided. The food was great, very generous portions and wholesome. Good cask ales (said my hubby). Our host, John was very welcoming, friendly and his staff were excellent. We will definitely stay again!! 16/07/2024 our 2nd stay, this time 4 nights. The hotel is still as good as before. John was still our host and all the staff were great. Food is still as good as our previous stay!! Will definitely stay again 😁

Stayed here for 2 nights, the rooms here were excellent, as well as the food available here was of best quality. Was in a great quiet location and all the town's people here also seemed friendly. Lastly, hotel was close enough to all the places we wanted to see such as the Aber falls and to climb snowdown, as well as many more. Thanks again to all the staff and also the boss of the hotel

Great food and service. It's set next to the river. In a beautiful spot. Some carparking outside, but there is a carpark over the road but not sure if you have to pay.

The only good part of going here was the location it was the only beautiful thing but other than that it was awful as the service was rude and i knocked him out and the room was filled with cat doo doo! i was horrified with this place will not be going again.

I've been meaning to go to The Black Lion for such a long time and I wasn't disappointed. Lovely pub and fabulous service, We popped in for lunch and had a lasagne and the steak and ale pie. I would've taken some pictures to show you how delicious it was but I completely forgot and couldn't stop myself delving in. Definitely my new favourite place.

This is a perfect pub for a few days away. set in a beautiful little village. With a river running past the pubs car park. One shop that's also the post office for papers ect. A children's play area and some great walks. Our room was big, king-size comfy bed, lots of pillows, tea and coffee by the doz. Kettle of course with a range of milk and biscuits. In the bathroom they was everything you need. Shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, skin softener, tissues, eye pads, cotton buds, air freshener, hair dryer, shaving mirror, heated towel rail, toilet tissue and 6 super soft white towels The food was very good too, from a hearty breakfast to a fabulous fish n chips for tea. Warm friendly always smiling staff. Nothing was too much trouble. We came down for breakfast and were asked if we had a good night's sleep. Is there anything missing from our room. We answered no it was perfect. And it was a Perfect few days. Highly recommend.

We hadn't made a reservation, we'd walked over from a nearby village. At the bar we tried to order food and were told they couldn't take food orders as they had a large table coming in in half an hour. We asked if we could order light things that would be cooked before the table arrived? The girl serving us went to say yes but looked at the grumpy man also serving behind the bar and changed her mind. Apparently there were other tables in the restaurant that were eating? We could order food but there would be an hour's wait. Meanwhile another family ordered chips. We asked if there would be an hour's wait for chips? There wasn't. Which sort of emphasised my point about ordering quick things that wouldn't take long to cook? We asked to order chips and cheese? Grumpy man tells girl serving behind the bar (ignoring us) that they have run out of cheese. Our chips come to our outside table, brought by grumpy man who informed us there were ketchup, vinegar and cutlery by the bar but he can't bring them to us as he has to change a barrel. Finished our chips with one drink each and left. Maybe grumpy man was having a bad day, we're all human. He did seem to want to turn away business though.

Great food great little pub I enjoy coming back here over the weeks I’m by here.

We have visited here a few times with no problem, today however was a different story. We ordered the 3 meat roast and sad to say it was awful. The beef was tough and looked like it had come out of a packet or pre cooked beef. The chicken, well there really wasn't any, maybe 1 mouthful. The Belly pork was lovely but the crackling was soggy. The Yorkshire pudding was so thick and heavy it was like eating a "cake". The gravy was watery and absolutely no flavour whatsoever. The roasties, well I wouldn't call them that. The best part of the meal was the Mozarella mash and the veg. Nobody comes over to ask if everything is OK, I feel that's done deliberately to avoid them dealing with your complaint. We were asked upon paying if we were happy and when we said "sadly not", they said they would let the kitchen know. Won't be returning here for a Sunday lunch which is a shame as it's situated in a beautiful town with lots of scenery.

The pub is lovely and is set in a really beautiful spot. The service was good and the beer too (Madri). BUT… the roast lamb meal which had been recommended to us was very disappointing - the lamb itself was really bland and very tough as was the Yorkshire pudding. 3 of us had the same meal and we all agreed. It’s a fairly long way to go to for a very mediocre meal.

The Black Lion at Llanfair Talhaiarn is in a beautiful village location along side of a pretty river. The staff were all friendly and very helpful. The owner John was very attentive to all customers and nothing was too much trouble for him. The food was all excellent and very well prepared and cooked. I would certainly stay there again.

Went here for a birthday meal with my son and my sister. Also my daughter inlaw and nephew. The meal we had was terrible. 5 of us altogether. We ordered the lamb for main meal it was bad. The Yorkshire pudding was so hard couldn't be eaten. Also the roast potatoes were very very hard. It's a shame coz the pub itself was lovely.needless to say we won't eat there again at weekend. They have a different chef during the week.

Only came here for Sunday Roast, and it did not disappoint! Massive plate of well cooked food.

To say that the surrounding pub and cafe are dog friendly this one isn't, really disappointing and was told we could sit in the shelter outside with the smokers, shelter was leaking due to the rain and didn't provide good coverage at all. Not a great experience for our first visit. May be consider an area where families and their furry friend can eat/drink in the pub like the majority. Location is beautiful as we were staying up the road just a shame we were asked to sit outside due to having the dog after such a long journey.

Poor choice of ale even though the waitress was welcoming and very helpful. I was on a business trip so the importance was simplicity, decent food and drink, quiet atmosphere and decent internet connection! Chose the mega-gammon which was good but why is it that caterers insist on trying to force canned pineapple on us with a grilled meat meal? 2 fried eggs, chips and mushy peas made the meal! Sad part was there was no French mustard to complement the meat. The waiting time for meal was surprisingly fast given other reviewer comments even though this was a Monday - from point of order at 1pm to food service at 1.16pm with a piping hot and decently cooked meal. A nice quiet pub with a constant background sound track that although easy on the ears did begin to grate after a period of time. Toilets were immaculately clean and smelt pleasantly fresh. Rather typical for a Robinson pub but it is such a great shame that whoever wrote their advertising was in a dream world when they claimed "don't forget the great range of ales on tap"!

Only giving it 3 stars because of a couple of reason . My plate was great but my friend said his was not the best . But the main reason was the service was very slow . Waited almost an hour to get our main course.

Would not recommend this pud at all. We booked for a special family meal to celebrate a joint birthday and anniversary. We let the waitress know that one of our family members is allergic to cheese .After waiting an hour and a half for our meals they finally brought them out informing us that the one my mum got was definitely the one with no cheese..After a few mouthfuls she realised it had it in .After telling the bar staff this the waitress came out and apologised, they couldnt even be bothered to send a manager. Very little regard or concern for food allergies or the seriousness of them at all and simply refunded that one meal . The rest of the meals were just as inedible. Watery gravy,rock hard dry pre cooked roast potatoes and the rest was tasteless. Didn't bother with desserts after the poor attitude and mammoth wait over the mains. Needless to say.wont be wasting our time or money there again.

This is a wonderful place to stay the owner cannot do enough to make your stay pleasurable.His. Team are very friendly and pay attention to detail x The food is well presented and delicious The beds are very comfortable and very spacious. We shall return again soon,

Excellent food and excellent service

Clean, tidy, friendly service but was sadly lacking in choices of beer for a Robinsons pub......Doom Bar or.......Doom Bar. Shame you can't see the river from the seats in the car park/beer garden.

Surprisingly well laid out, tables actually large enough to be comfy, and really good food. I would eat here again.

You have to wait for food but good things come to those who wait. Be patient! We are there nearly every week and have had different meals off the menu and have never been disappointed. The food is always worth waiting for and is immense 👌🏻

My husband and I Visited here for an evening meal with daughter, son in law and grandson, well what a let down. Ordered drinks, some not available and also ordered food. After waiting ages then having to ask how much longer as toddler was hungry, food eventually turned up. Husband and I both had the steak and ale pie, which should only have a pastry lid, well where do I start, if there were 3 pieces of small steak awash with gravy in pastry vase and top, absolutely disgusting as each meal was £14.95, so not worth the money. Son in law had lamb dinner, it was just about hot enough to eat but he ate it as was soooo hungry. Daughter had burger, asked for no salad but would have coleslaw, no coleslaw on plate. Didn’t get chance to ask for it as her meal was thrust in front of her and waitress rushed off. Not one person came over to ask if everything was alright during our meal, we were finally asked after when the plate were removed but just got told we’ll tell the kitchen!!!!! We asked for menus for desserts, these never materialised, so we decided to pay up and leave. Husband again complained about lack of meat in steak and ale pie but we were still charged in full. Absolutely disgusting, we won’t be back. This used to be a fabulous pub with superb food, but it’s not anymore, avoid it if you want quality and also if you are short on time.

One of our favourite places to stop and have a meal or a drink since moving to the area. Menu is not as verified as it could be but in the current climate what can you do. Food is good, staff are great, good prices.

Wonderful if you're looking for a quiet out of the way pub/restaurant. Friendly staff and marvelous hosts. If there is a drawback, and I don't consider it one, it is quite remote and your mobile probably won't work without connecting to the WiFi.

Really enjoyable visit from start to finish. My wife and our two kids popped in for some food after a day out. The location is very picturesque, and the place itself was great. The staff were super friendly and food was delicious.

2 hrs for the main course hair on the plate the cheese was on after them not putting it on kids cheese burgers manager didn't seem bothered Worst experience ever Avoid at all costs

Popped here on route to mid Wales one evening and decided on fish and chips, the food was amazing and the service and staff were also amazing....

Had a meal here January 2023. I asked for a slice of lemon or orange in my drink- didn’t get it. Waited 1 hour and 20 minutes for my main meal. ( didn’t order any starter). When it finally arrived, the sea bass was slimy and served skin side up with raw prawns. The French potatoes were Just horrible ( basically a sliced potato with some watery cream) and not golden and delicious as it should be. All this served with a salad! Totally inappropriate, should have been fresh seasonal vegetables or French beans. No one asked if everything was alright. Limited menu for fish or vegetarian options, but if you like pies ( mostly meat options) then there’s about five pies on menu!. Very disappointing overall. :(

Extremely disappointing. Went to celebrate a birthday and also an upcoming deployment so was a very special meal, that was until we ordered. It is also a Bar/Hotel but doesn't serve Fanta/Sprite/Coke only juices and sugar-free Pepsi or lemonade, what bar/restaurant doesn't serve normal soft drinks? Starters arrived and they were fine, but the floor staff forgot to collect our plates, despite only two other tables with customers on them. I'm assuming the man from another table who went behind the bar and then took our plates was a manager, but he got up from his own meal to remove our plates such was the delay. One ordered the Roast Beef dinner with gravy on the side, not on the plate, but it arrived covered in gravy. Miserable portion Another ordered the Fish & Chips, mushy peas, fish he said was really nice, but less than a handful of chips, when he asked for more they arrived after he had finished eating his food so no use to him. The food was served on a paper tissue on top of the plate so as he ate his fish and chips he was eating the paper too. Miserable portions Finally, the last plate was the so-called Mega Gammon which was not mega in any way at all, it had 8 chips on the plate and although some mash was asked for when ordering the spoonful that came with it was literally a spoonful. Asked for more mash which arrived but was lukewarm if even that it was bordering on cool We didn't order deserts as the choice was basic and the price was £6.95 per desert considering the portions for the main meals were just not worth it. Including a drink each, it came to £77.00 which was the worst money ever spent. SO disappointed as we are locals, had heard it was great for food, but sadly that's not the case. From reading other reviews it seems this is the norm for service and choice which is sad, considering it had once a great reputation. Will never return or recommend it to anybody, how could we?

We booked a table for our anniversary meal for 7:30 pm We arrived 10 minutes early and were seated immediately Our order was placed and we had our drinks quite quickly but!... It took 40 mins for the starter to come which was nice to be fair ( goats cheese ) We then sat there waiting for our main no one came to say there was a delay we waited until 8.35 then we went to the bar to ask how much longer the lady behind the bar said won’t be long now so we waited !! By this time the couple behind us complained about how slow the service was and the food was cold when it eventually arrived Now the restaurant was quite busy when we arrived but by now most of them had left and we where still waiting for our mains !!!! 8.55 pm (1.35 minutes later ) we got up paid for our drink and starters and left !!! Absolutely ridiculous/ awful service not as if it was packed no excuse for poor service too many other places to eat We where hoping for a nice country pub to celebrate our anniversary Needless to say we will not be recommending or returning!!!!😡😡😡

If you want a lovely peaceful place to stay in the lovely Welsh hills near the coast this could be the place for you.Your hosts John and Sandra go out of the way to make your stay memorable for all the right reasons with excellent food and the bedrooms are beautiful with everything you need for a comfortable stay.We will definitely stay here again in the future.

We didn't stay here, but there isn't anywhere to leave a riew on the restaurant 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️,which has been excellent this year Untill now !!!! I think they have changed there chef, as the food wasn't as good as has it has been , the service was slow ,no mats on the table's for drinks ,drinks order wasn't taken for a good 20 minutes, and food a further 20 minutes, which was very disappointing when it arrived ,the portion size has been greatly reduced and the presentation was amateurish, unfortunately we won't be rushing back, it had been our favourite place to eat recently, but not now !!!!

We came here for a pit stop and then back again for a meal. Really nice straightforward unpretentious yet delicious food. The beef chilli was actually really beefy, cooked the proper way with diced steak (rather than mince). My partner has a really nice tagine and the kids meals were done properly, really nice butchers sausages and chicken nuggets from proper chicken breast. The ice cream was also delicious. Most importantly the service and allergy awareness was really really good. The staff were really friendly and helpful. thank you and see you again soon
