We come here regularly as they do proper homemade chips , and pies , the staff are always friendly and the mixed grill is amazing

After not being able to get to our favourite local Pub since December 2019 we finally managed it today Still as fantastic food as ever! All home cooked by Jackie and her team. Never ever disapoints. They have their own excellent Covid system in place which works really well and feels very safe. The Staff were as lovely as ever. We went with our friend and partner who equally loved the food. The build your own chips option is top nosh! If you haven't tried their chips like this or even on your main meal then you simply must. Was good to be back. Proper value for money and you never come away hungry. Simply the best! We will be back very soon.

First time going to our local after a year of covid lockdown. Can't ask for more. They're a fantastic group.

Not been here for a while due to covid. It was a lovely visit. Staff very friendly and on the ball with the covid regulations. Food was lovely. We are returning in three days with my dad and again two days later with daughter and friend.

Really enjoyable evening at the Black Lion. The chips were amazing and the steak and ale pie was one of the very best I've ever had. And all for a great price too. Can't wait to come back!

Stopped for quick lunch but it wasn't as good as the TA rating suggests. Steak pie ok but the fish and chips were soggy and greasy without any flavour whatsoever (even the mushy peas were tasteless). Wish we had gone somewhere else!

This used to be my local prior to Stoke Home games for many years. Left area and having returned it is now fast becoming our local for food. Absolutely lovely home made pub food. The chips still are the "Best" in the area Great value for money. Have eaten here 3 times in past 2 weeks. Can not fault place. Staff are fab and so friendly. Love Landlady she always bin a laugh and handles the "naughty drunk punters" on past Stoke games with ease Lovely to see she still running the place. Just lovely place to eat. Will be back this week

Really really nice meal in a very pleasant pub. Food was beautiful, the gammon was massive and i would even go as far as saying tastier than the one i had at the masons arms. Seems a really friendly place sitting back and listening to the locals. Staff also were very nice would certainly recommend and i will be going back whilst working in the area.

We have been several times over the last 5 months ( since the refurb) and always been very satisfied with the meals and friendliness & welcome from the landlady and landlord. Found the quality of the meals very good for the price we paid. The kitchen closes at 8pm so you need to book a table by 7.30pm at the latest! There is entertainment on alternative Saturday nights ( some acts better than others) but our only criticism would be that the acts set up around 7.30pm but then sit drinking & don’t actually start playing until almost 10pm which is far too late when you’ve finished your meal by 8.30pm. Very often we leave by 1030pm because the acts have a break again until 11pm

good choices on the menu and great value for money,the chips are still homemade which is becoming rarer and rarer in pub dining

Visit black lion on a regular basis with my grandparents for lunch. Barmaid Sharon makes them feel at home and I thank her as she makes them feel welcome, and she goes the extra mile to help with Nan as she is partially sighted.

Not quite sure why this place is loved so much the food looks like it’s been bought frozen from Iceland and heated up. Yeah it’s cheap but the exact same meal would cost £2 in Iceland

The black Lion in Stoke-on-Trent Sehr freundliches Personal. Preisgünstig. Die Burger waren mittel, der Rest spitze. Leckere Pommes, Drinks, Spielplatz draußen und Spielsachen drinnen für Kinder. Günstige Kids Menüs. Darin enthalten sind neben Hauptspeise auch ein „Cup-Drink“ und Dessert. Es wäre toll, wenn es ein Getränk ohne zusätzlichen Zucker oder Süßstoff für Kinder gäbe. Aber ansonsten sehr kinderfreundlich. Alles sauber. Gut als Zwischenstopp geeignet.

Excellent pub food at a very good price. The staff are all very friendly and are great with the kids.

Visited this place a few weeks ago, entered the establishment a tad early, there was a chap (bar tender) and a smaller chap (the chef), having a lot of banter, this banter was going back and forward, all in good fun. the real ales were exceptional, and we tried the food, large portions and we really enjoyed it, we are returning this week, do visit if you are that way.We now refer to this pub as, the angry chef, as you know, all chefs are temperamental! Cheers lads for a great day!

Me and my eldest daughter have been here 5 times always lovely food friendly staff and always clean good value for money and parking too will definitely keep comming back

great staff (Danny is a bully lol) , food i inexpensive and of a relativity good quality. We give 4 not five tars due to the chips were soggy & the id were unruly and screening their a55es off in the garden. We will visit again if passing.

Visited yesterday for pre Stoke City match drinks. Always use this Pub for just that and never failed me. Lovely friendly Stokey atmosphere. Excellent Landlady and Staff and fab service. Not been for a while as was out of the area but now im back it will definitely be my local again. Cheesy chips were always our favourite but these have been upgraded to loaded chips now with a selection of toppings and for £2.75 great value for huge portion. Fab pub so if you haven't tried it before, you need too

Had lunch on 20thFebruary. We had breaded mushrooms with salad and galic mayo. DELICIOUS. Then i had Lasagne and my Sister the Steak and ale pie.With home made chips. Service was excellent. Food was gorgeous. We will be back.

As a couple we went to the Black Lion to watch the Conspirators a local band. Not only does this pub serve great food this night they put on some fantastic entertainment . There was at least four bar staff serving so getting a drink with no problem. In front of the stage there is a small dance floor where my wife and others Just danced the night away. Can't wait for Saturday the 8th of December where they've got one of the best male singers in Staffordshire performing.

the mix grills are up there with the best even though they arent too expensive,homemade chips too. :)

Been here a few times for lunch. Lovely food , good portions and piping hot . Nice friendly staff as well. My dad who is 85 really enjoys having lunch here.

Finished Bank holiday weekend off,with a tasty mixed grill at the Black Lion,also nice lager.Home cooked food.polite and friendly staff.No more driving arounď looking for somewhere like this.Will use again.

Been here twice this week, as we'd not been for while. Great home cooked food, at a great price. Just noticed the price for Sunday dinner and we will be coming back at weekend.

We popped in to here after an appointment at the nearby Royal Stoke hospital. It's a small pub next to a busy road but it side is a proper homely pub. The place is spotless and there is a range of food on the menu. We had a meal off the 2 for £6.95 menus which give you the choice of starter and main or main and pudding. We also had a meal off the kids menu. Our meal was a decent size with lovely home cooked chips and perfectly cooked eggs. The child's meal was a pizza and happy faces sadly the pizza was microwaved. We all had ice cream for pudding and was served in sundae glasses. Friendly staff who were all genuinely happy and efficient at keeping the place spotless. Will visit here again.

We have visited here on 3 occasions and we couldn't be happier with the food. There pies and roasts are 2nd to none. My partner had a salad and it looked and tasted amazing. Highly recommended.

Drove past this pub quite a few times before we tried it. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Food was good. Ice cream for dessert was lovely.

So I visited the Black lion for the first time, ordered a pint of carling "£3.40 please sir" handed my debit card over "oh there's a extra £1 surcharge under £10"!!! Really! There was a cash point inside but guess what that charges as well.

We use the Black Lion regularly and are never disappointed. The food is excellent and the staff are always warm and welcoming. Highly recommend that give this place a visit.

Called in here today after a hospital appointment, never been in b4 but already looking forward to going back, hubby had homemade pie, and i had the gammon, which was massive, served with fresh pinnapple, and homemade chips, lovery young lady serving on the bar aswell. All in all great place great food

We have never been served a bad meal at this pub it is not the Ritz to look atHowever my eyes are on the food which is tops and good value!We find the staff pleasant service is the best!No one knows how to prepare veg like the Black Lyon it is lovely you cannot say it ismushy and full of water it is indeed Tops!

but this review isn't biased on that basis, as I saw many landlords, landladies and staff pass through and moved away years ago.The current long standing landlord (Keith) and landlady (Jackie) have got it spot on, the pub is the best it's been managed for years, Paul (the chef) has been there a fair few years too.This means it's well run, the food is great and everything is done for the customer. My old man's losing the plot, very forgetful etc, but he knows what he wants for his lunch and where he wants it from - and it's the Black Lion and steak and ale pie every time I visit him - so it's all gone full circle for me, from where I used to spend my misspent youth to where I now, as a 46 year old man, take my Dad out for lunch instead.So years of sentimental value just add to how special this place is - a lot of the pubs in the vicinity have closed now, same as everywhere else, to see this place close would finish off a community IMO - so, please. go and eat there and try it for yourself and know you're in for a treat

the black lion is a great little pub on the main A34. The staff are friendly and the food is very good. I especially like the home cooked chips which seem to difficult to find these days . The prices are excellent and everything is freshly cooked . I rate it as my number one pub to eat in stoke . They also do a great xmas menu again all fresh veg and a great choice We had our works xmas meal there last year and the team now wont go anywhere else!! Jackie and her team go out of their way to make sure a great time is had by all.

We were on our way home from visiting the Stafford Gold Hoard in the Potteries museum when hunger came upon us. On asking we were recommended to the Black Lion which clearly is a "football public house" as there were to set everywhere! It was a very friendly place with a typical pub type choice of food. The local beer was also very good. The portions were extensive.

Called in this pub today for something to eat, went with my dad, sister and niece, customer service was great, staff were pleasant. Food came quickly and it was really nice.

Lovely location. Pub very traditional. Location a bit remote for cars but ideal for canal and river traffic. Ate outside. Nice food. Bar service little bit slow but environment very relaxed. Fully enjoyed.

We stopped here for lunch during a road trip to Blackpool. Random pick and the food was average at best. I had the Burger and my wife the Steak & Ale pie. Burger was dry and the chips soggy and tasted like it was fried in "Old" oil. Nothing to rave about at all.

Great food, good service. Pretty standard pub menu, but the food is of a much higher quality than most branded pubs.

Got there on a Thursday said there would be a wait for food as a big table was in. What a pleasant change to be told this rather than just a wait without any explanation. Food came in a very timely fashion.Mixed grill was perfect even though I changed a few items, my wife had the 2 course menu for £6.95 couldn't fault that either.Staff were pleasant and efficient.Would highly recommend.Definitely value for money.

Local style pub athough friendly and welcoming with a nice range of wholesome food at good prices. Visted after a stressful trip to hospital and felt relaxed, welcome and well fed.

We've eaten (and drunk) here for many years and always had a decent meal for a very reasonable price.The staff are friendly and you can nearly always get a table in a corner with lots of privacy.They even serve real chips!For a very good, reasonably priced meal you can't beat it.

Been a few times for lunch always lovely food and the chips are real! Very friendly. It does cater for football, so don't go if there is a match on, unless that's what you want!

Me and the Mrs tried this place on a whim as we saw the board outside advertising food. Unsure as to how it would be we decided to give it a go anyway. We were greeted by a very friendly lady behind the bar who gave us the menu and said we could sit wherever we wanted. The choice on the menu is varied, from curries to burgers, salads to grill items. I went for the mixed grill and added the peppercorn sauce as an add on. My lady had the same. When the food was bought out, the plate was akin to a flying saucer and the food portions overly generous. Each meat item was cooked perfectly, and my steak was cooked medium (as requested). The homemade chips are the best chips I have ever had in a pub, and the sausage is easily the nicest one I have had in a long time. There is a choice of salad or veg on the mixed grill, which was a nice touch as other places don't offer that. The pub itself is very clean, tasteful decor, and has a 'homely' feel to it. There is a separate bar area, but we didn't visit that part, and a wide selection of drinks that you would expect a pub to have. They also cater for children as there are kids meals available. Since The Plough in Endon shut, we have tried to find a place that offers food to such a good quality. We have definitely found that in The Black Lion and I'd even go as far as to say that the food here is better than the food that was served in The Plough. The prices are very reasonable. The mixed grill cost £10.95 and the peppercorn sauce an extra £2.00. Readers of this review may think that eleven quid is a bit steep for a mixed grill, but until you see what they bring out, it becomes a real bargain. Prices of drinks vary depending on what your tipple is, but they are typical of any pub in the area, for instance a pint of Carling was £3.00. It would be nice to see some guest ales on, as the pub doesn't really gave a real ale selection. The only bitter on offer (as far as I could see) was John Smiths. We really enjoyed dining here, and have found a hidden gem. This definitely will not be our last visit. Well done to all the staff at the pub, it's a real credit to you. A***

I ate here tonight with a friend and we had the Christmas Special at £16.95. The whole meal was excellent. It was freshly prepared and was cooked beautifully. The waiter was lovely and the service brilliant and the bar staff very helpful. We met the chef who was also lovely. The best meal I have had in a long time. Would definitely recommend it.

I tried here twice this week, once on Monday with my mum which was nice, lasagne and chips, home cooked, which were really nice, and my mum had steak and ale pie which again was nice. We booked for myself and my boyfriend to go this evening (Saturday) we had late and potato skins to start which for the money was ok for £3.95 you don't expect homemade starters. My boyfriend then had the mixed grill which he said was alright, it did look good and there was a plateful. I had the Cajun chicken salad, which was ok, lacked in presentation though and needed a little something extra on the salad for me, you know like grated carrot or raddish etc that kind of thing but again for the money you can't grumble. Couple of the young staff do need a bit more customer service training if I'm honest but at the end of the day it is a pub so all in all not bad. Not rushing to go back but definitely will use it again.

was a pleasant eating area and food ordered looked fab. generous portion sizes and good tasting piping hot food will defiantly return (oh and proper homemade chips!)

this pub is a nice local pub, with nice friendly staff. The meals are great value for money and the Sunday roast is delicious. All in all a very nice place

If uve any problems with either food or drink, they are rude and treat you you with no dignity, also been for lots of nights out in there, and the landlord is very indecent with paying customers and always intoxicated...

We order the Ribeye dinner with mash and veggies, beer battered cod with mash and veggies with 2 beers. Basically the food lacked flavor.

we stopped at the pub having passed by on several occasions previously it's not the brightest place in the world as you enter but it had a good feel and atmosphere. We ordered drinks at the bar and asked what the procedure was on the food front. A very helpful young lady pointed us to some menus and asked us where we would like to sit. She told us once we had decided what we wanted to come back to the bar to place our order.On perusal of the menu I have to say there was plenty of choice from steaks to burgers fish & chips to lasagne. There was also a choice of starters and deserts and on certain meals there were special offers two courses for £7.99 three courses for £9.99. There was also a child's menu. You could also have toasties, baked potatoes, salads or sandwiches. We ordered a ham salad and a steak & mushroom baguette with a side order of chips, the food arrived in good time and was obviously freshly cooked ( not the salad) lol. The chips were proper home cooked chips not frozen and I have to say all the food was well cooked/prepared and very fresh and very enjoyable. All in all a more than adequate lunch at a very reasonable price and the Abbot Ale was superb!!

This is our third visit to the Black Lion in 18 months and I am already looking forward to our next one.Always greeted by friendly, helpful staff. For our meals we both had the mixed grill which cost £10.95 but was definitely worth it! All of the ingredients were fresh, tasty, served hot and cooked to perfection.Good work.
