Had a lovely all-day brekkie here for £8. Everything was beautifully cooked and tasted great and you get a large plateful of food! However, the other customers, and there were only a few, were from the swamp. One group were continually swearing with F this and F that. The other group were taking the piss (and getting it wrong) out of other customers, including me. If you can stomach that, the food is Great! I would say this place is NOT family friendly One star knocked off for the awful atmosphere!

Visited teatime Saturday and we were the only ones in the pub. The Titanic Plum Porter was undrinkable for five of us and had to be replaced with Old Speckled Hen which wasn't very good either. The food is all African traditional food and the chef is a lovely African lady and her daughter, however, the fact that there is no 'normal' British food to choose at all is rather a drawback. I had the fish dish and the fish itself was lovely but I wasn't keen on the yam chips. The meat on the other plates was very lacking in any quantity and wasn't cooked very well. Uninspiring. The choice of accompaniment was yam chips or rice. Yam chips are awful... tasteless, pale but hard. There was a small portion of chilli dip and tomato dip on the plate (which isn't most people's taste) The food is cheap, but that won't draw me back to the pub I'm afraid. In summary, there isn't enough demand for beer so it goes off. The food is too niche and there's no 'normal' pub grub. It's a shame because the African girls are enthusiastic, as is the landlord, but you need to have a rethink of your strategy, I feel

We attended a retirement party for a colleague of ours. We had all pre-ordered food. We paid £45 for two courses. Initially, we were served a tiny portion of soup, we initially thought it was tomato, but on tasting it, it was (i think) a very over seasoned red pepper & overpowering chilli. It was served with bread and very cheap margerine, we really didn't enjoy it. Next, we were served steak & chips. Some of us had peas, some of us didn't 3 of us got onion rings, one of us didn't (i wasn't bothered because they were deep fried into oblivion - hard and crunchy) There was a tiny little side salad, which we were charged £3 for & a tiny little portion of mushrooms. The steak was okay, but quite fatty. The service was really bad with over an hour and a half between the first of us being served our main course and the last. We were sat at two seperate tables, so half our party had their backs to each other, a square shaped table with everybody facing each other would have been much better. We won't be eating there again, I'm afraid. If the landlord took on to much, he should have informed us & cancelled, or at least given us a discount on the night for the poor food and poor service. We had to eat when we got home as we were hungry. The poor girl running up & downstairs all night was the star of the show, an absolute credit who looked after us all!

We attended a funeral wake and took careful steps to ensure that 2 people were only served gluten free food as both had Coeliac disease and there were other gf dietary members also. We had been assured by the chef and bar staff that the cake was definitely gluten free. One family member was seriously ill after eating the cake. We later learned that it contained wheat which was written clearly in bold on the packaging, which we only learned at a later date. The staff have treated the situation badly and don't apoear to understand the serious consequences for allergy sufferers. The cake was vegan but not gf. Beware allergy sufferers eating at this establishment. It was an upsetting time after attending a funeral and then compounded by an allergic reaction to the food.

Marvellous! The wife and I took a friend for Sunday lunch to the Duke William earlier today. We'd booked a nice table by the window in the dining room upstairs and it was all laid out beautifully with plenty of elbow room all round. Everything from the booking to the drinks and food service were excellent. Nothing was too much trouble - they even gave me a free pint of beer when the one I'd ordered wasn't available. The food was plentiful and delicious, with a particular call out to the steak 'n' kidney pudding and the roast beef which were gorgeous. I'd go again in a heartbeat.

Me and my Hubby were invited here last Saturday. There are limited parking bays in St. John's Square. We were fortunate enough to find a space. It only cost £1 because it was after 3 p.m. (free for disabled blue badge holders). The machine wasn't accepting coins so I had to pay by bank card. This 3-storey building is situated in Burslem Town Centre on the north-west corner of St. John's Square and Newcastle Street. I really liked the mock Tudor black & white frontage of this Grade 2 listed public house which was re-built in 1929. The interior had dark wooden panels and a traditional bar counter. We had drinks in the bar downstairs (they only accept bank card payments over £5) and a tasty meal in the function room upstairs. All the staff were hard-working, coping remarkably well in the extreme temperature due to the one-off heatwave. I recommend this Potteries Pub.

In a way I want to rate this higher (3 or 4) but I just struggle to do so as so many small things just not right. So whilst downstairs was full of local football fans the upstairs was a peaceful oasis. Nicely laid out, but... not so sure about a flashing Xmas tree display light. A little out of keeping with the rest of the decor. But ok, Can live with that. Menu had promise, interesting and diverse. Order a Steak Pie, but... the food came swimming in gravy (and I love gravy) but,,,, put it in a jug!! ... but ....sadly not great gravy, too salty and tasted too much of something out of a packet to the point it overpowered the main dish . Veg on the side good, but... water boiled (not steamed) so soggy and tasteless (aka school dinners); so why bother?? Big portions, my main ( a pie) was great as were the other mains - bit let done by the little things. Next time I'm in town I'll try somewhere else

I'm vegetarian and was pleasantly surprised at the quality of the roast dinner - everything was cooked beautifully, especially the veggies. The vegetarian gravy I asked for was a good flavour - not the gloopy stuff I often get. Yes I was surprised to see Quorn mince with a roast dinner but it was prepared really well. Staff were friendly and helpful. The only thing you need to be aware of (and this is whether you're vegetarian or not!) is the presence of stringent street parking restrictions. A lot of the spaces are permit only - including the car park 'round the back of the pub - and it is very zealously monitored. It IS possible to park, but just be careful.
