Went for Sunday lunch today. Historically the food has always been good. Not exceptional but good. Never expected more than that for a local village pub. But today Sunday lunch was to say the least poor. Meat was overdone. Yorkshire puddings hard. Gravy had a skin on and was clearly not fresh and was “beyond” thick. Veg very limited and soggy. I’ll not go on. Not a good experience and so disappointing as it used to be good place to go.

First visit on passing through Firbeck. Lovely pub, friendly staff. Fairly expensive menu and wine, ale was reasonably priced. Not a wide choice on the sandwich and light bites menu. Overall good, would maybe have scored higher without the 'discretionary' 10% service charge automatically added and not knowing how much the bill was until receipted. Also paid prior to meal being served, I like to know what the food and service is like before leaving a tip. Another tip, don't let your customers play about with the open log fire!

Party of 4 we visited on a Monday night, food was good, it was not until we got home and looked at the bill that we were disappointed, why do they put 10% service charge on your bill with out asking you. Let's be honest Alcohol is expensive has it is without paying extra to bring it 4 yards from the bar to table, we had 2 liver and onions 1 hunter's chicken and 1 steak preceeded with 2 starters, 2 pints of cider 2 pints of lager 2 cokes and 1 bitter, cost £160. 64p including service charge.

We went with our friends, there were 4 of us for weekday dinner. 3 had pie, 1 scampi, nothing fancy, 2 drinks each, the bill was £191, we nearly fainted. Turns out there was a £38 bottle of wine on it that we didn't have and an assumed tip for themselves of £17.50. When we challenged it, they were not very nice and actually went to check the bottle bin to see if there was an empty bottle fitting the description? They begrudgingly refunded the bottle of wine after 5 days to a card, with a scowl and a bad attitude but would not discuss their assumed tip. I was always of the understanding that service in the service industry is expected. Exceptional service is rewarded and it certainly wasn't that. A glass of wine was £12.50? Needless to say, 4 customers lost.

Called in at lunchtime on Friday, it was surprisingly quiet, we tried to the Hawkstone lager it was very good, I had Korean chicken stir fry it had some heat to it and was very tasty, hubs had the beef burger, he enjoyed that too. We didn’t notice the 10% service charge until we got home, otherwise we wouldn’t have given a £5 tip, We will definitely return though.

Visited the Black Lion on Saturday and it was very very average - we had a Sunday lunch the week before and although expensive it was really nice … So we thought we would return again however this time we were all extremely disappointed with the food, very bland very poorly presented and poor service…. We paid the service charge last Sunday but this time we didn’t however we did leave a small tip…. We did recommend the Black Lion to our friends and family after our visit last Sunday however after the Visit this Saturday we will not be recommending it which is such a shame….. For the price of the food you should get the quality to go with it and on Saturday we did not.

Me and Hubby have just got home after a lovely meal at the Black Lion, we’ve been wanting to visit for a few months but just never got around to it. For starters we shared the full Camembert, it came with gorgeous crunchy bread and a lovely dip,(can’t remember what the dip was) For mains my hubby had the 10 oz Bacon steak with Chips , fried egg, grilled tomatoes and mushrooms and he ate every item on his plate which is so unusual for him, the steak was an inch thick and he said it just melted in the mouth. I had the Tuscan Salmon and it certainly didn’t disappoint, the selection of fresh vegetables were cooked to perfection the fondant potato made a lovely change from chips or new potatoes and the tomato sauce it came with was delicious, we would go as far to say that it is the nicest meal out we’ve had out in a long time and we will certainly be back. Give the place a try, I’m sure you want be disappointed.

We booked The Black Lion on a whim, thinking we'd have a lazy bank holiday Monday evening out, and are so glad that we did. From the first welcome, we can't fault anything - the team, food and atmosphere were excellent. I had salmon with sun-dried tomatoes. The salmon was still moist, not at all dry, with a light creamy sauce and a proper fondant potato. My other half had pork tenderloin, which came with a cider sauce, homemade potato cake, and baby apples. Both meals were perfectly cooked, very tasty and the portion size more than ample. If you're in a hurry, it's maybe not the place to eat, but that's because everything is freshly prepared and comes out piping hot and well presented. The inn itself is nicely decorated, with unobtrusive music and a nice choice of niche beers. The staff are very friendly and attentive, but without being overpowering. We'll definitely be going back soon.

Over the visits, between us and our companions, we have managed to sample the pies, burgers, cod mornay, venison casserole, and a variety of desserts. Been out for food tonight, was really looking forward to it as heard good things. The starters were average. The mains, we had the chicken burger and the Barnsley chop. The Barnsley chop was extremely salty and all we could taste. With the burger, I took one bite and all that I could smell and taste was cinnamon. I queried why it was so strong in cinnamon as it isn’t mentioned on the menu and was told the chef uses ‘mixed spices’ not sure what spices I would want on a chicken and cheese burger but was certainly not cinnamon. I was offered a new main however at this point we were ready to leave due to the poor service. Not being offered any drinks throughout the meal or having anyone check on our food the whole time we were eating. (I had to go and find someone to ask about the burger) Paid for all meals despite the complaint, will definitely not be returning and for anyone going in the future, don’t bother with the burger.

Visited this pub on a Sunday when there was 6 of us for Sunday lunch. It was £22.95 for 2 courses. I had a Sunday roast with lamb and the chocolate brownie for dessert. The roast was very average, the lamb was sliced wafer thin and not overly tasty. There was 6 of us having a roast main and we got a small to medium sized dish of vegetables to share that went with the mains, so just a taster each. The brownie dessert was OK but I've had better brownies from a Betty crocker packet mix. If I hadn't had a dessert I wouldn't have been full. Also there's a compulsory service charge, which I find extremely cheeky. Not worth the money.

We went here on a whim for our anniversary afternoon tea as we had heard good things about it. As we walked in I was instantly hit with the vibe. And what a vibe it is. Very cottage like and warm. Very farmer esc is the best way I can describe it with beautiful and nostalgic furnishings throughout, pictures of local wildlife and the history of the place really pull you in straight away. We were greeted by a lovely lady called Zoey and she was instantly helpful and you could tell she wanted us to have the best experience. We sat in the cubby area which was a bit more secluded and lovely and warm. The food itself was incredible. I make a point of trying afternoon teas as I love them and I promise this one is brilliant. You get a selection of sandwiches, home made (huge) sausage roll section and pork, chicken pie. Along with this you get a selection of cakes and possibly the nicest scones I've ever eaten. Plenty of tea aswell. Whilst I was there I took a look at the toilets, nothing to special and a bit outdated now but did the trick I couldn't see and wheelchair access but on this occasion I didn't look around the whole place, they may have some around the side but don't quote me there. Parking is attached for punters aswell as some over the road, not loads so be wary of you come at a busier time. Service was brilliant, Zoey truly is a gem, she really put alot of effort into providing the best experience and was happy and bubbly throughout, truly made us feel welcome. Really easy to book aswell on their website and they are active on social media if you have questions The price for the two afternoon teas with tea came to £43 so not too bad for what we got Overall we had the best time here and will be returning/telling people about it 5/5

We visited last night. The staff were knowledgeable, helpful and very friendly. A nice welcoming atmosphere. We had Salad Nicoise which we felt was expensive for what it was. The tuna steak was a little dry. The accompaniments were very sparse. One egg cut in half, two pieces of potato, a bit of gem lettuce and six olives. No presentation. A Salad Nicoise usually has green beans and anchovies on. We had Key Lime Pie for desert which was awful. The tartlets were half filled with runny tasteless custardy type filling. It should be of a mousse like consistency. One of mine was only half full. The icecream was nice. Really disappointing. I don't think we'll risk it again.

I can't believe how rude that the landlord was to reply to a previous comment of 'WE'RE NOT TOBY CAVERY' just because as a customer a comment was made. To tell you the truth I like Toby carvery at least you get more food for the price which is only £11. Also you don't have other party members eating from the same bowl of vegetables for 3 people. Also outrageous that we should be charged a £5 service charge on top of our expensive meal which was not great. Surely you have to let customers aware somewhere on the premise that this is applied to the final bill of 10%.

Pre-booked a table for 2 on Saturday evening & was pleased to see the tables were well spaced apart. The staff were all friendly, polite & accommodating. The menu showed a wide selection for me & a good number of gluten free options for my partner. Both starters were tasty & plentiful. For main, I chose homemade 'Steak & ale pie', which was served with thick cut chips, a bowl of seasonal vegetables and a pot of thick gravy (the pie was full of thick chunks of tender beef)...my partner chose 'Cod loin wrapped in pancetta', which was served on a bed of pea & cheese risotto. Again, both meals were tasty (one of the best pies I've had) & plentiful - I had to leave some of my chips. We were both too full to have dessert...maybe next time, as we will definitely return!

Food was good, but I was a little disappointed that they didn't have any vegan ice cream/cream etc., to accompany deserts. Most places these days seem to cater for food intolerances, so to not have a non dairy option seems a bit strange. It wouldn't hurt to keep some vegan ice cream in the freezer!.

Usually receive the highest customer service at the Walled Garden - never any complaint even at busiest of times - but not today. No queue at the counter which I thought great (most unusual as usually rammed). Three members of staff stood chatting behind counter & carried on, even though knew we were there. When we they eventually finished their conversation, one asked rather abruptly for our order - no pleasantries or anything. Got to end of counter to pay and collect - she got it wrong as I’d asked for takeaway and she made extremely sarcastic comment. Puts you off - nothing wrong with a smile and polite customer service in my opinion!l Unfortunately encountered her again when went to buy takeaway cakes a bit later - friendly service wasn’t in her vocabulary. Would recommend staff go on customer service training - especially the staff member with a slight foreign accent who was doing the serving today.
